SES Tutoring Daily Lesson Plans

Information: A lesson plan is a Tutors detailed description of instruction for an individual lesson. As we have a limited number of hours with each student and our goals are very explicitly set forth at the beginning of the program, this lesson plan will most likely be very similar from lesson to lesson. Lessons plans must be prepared by each Tutor prior to beginning the Tutoring session. The things upon which the SES lesson plan is based The subject(s) of the lesson Reading, Math, Reading and Math The overall goals of the Tutoring program The number of lessons The amount of time in each lesson a list of required materials

Elements of a Lesson Plan

Establish communication. Ensure that student is comfortable and focused Review. The Tutor goes over previously taught skills and vocabulary. This is normally noted on the Student Log pages. Instructional component. The Tutor must lay out the sequence of events which will take place as the lesson is delivered. It includes use of ASAP Study Guides, MathLine books, Repairing Phonics and Reading etc. as well as the instructional inputwhat the teacher plans to do and say, and guided practicean opportunity for students to try new skills or express new ideas with the modeling and guidance of the teacher. Practice. With a small group, students may practice independently or be paired with another student for practice while the Tutor supervises or provides one-on-one to a student in the group. This practice component must be structured and planned ahead of time. Summary. The Tutor wraps up the discussion and for the students to pose unanswered questions. This is also a time for the Tutor to ask students what they learned that day and get their feedback on the lesson. This is an excellent time to ask the students for success stories either orally or in writing which can be shared with parents and the Program Director. Evaluation. Often lessons have an evaluative component where the Tutor checks for mastery of the instructed skills or concepts. In our Tutoring program this includes getting G scores on the McCallCrabbs Test Lessons in Reading, the Level Tests in Repairing Phonics and Reading, Skills Reviews at the beginning and end of Language Arts Math Study Guides and student-specific evaluations that Tutors propose as part of helping each student reach their goals. This evaluation must be planned and is very important for the monthly Student Progress Report which includes a write-up of the measurable progress on the Students goal which is based on the Sunshine State Standards.
