S CHECKLIST
TIPS Proof-read your paper for spelling mistakes and typos Check the grammar and punctuation of the paper carefully If there are paragraphs that seem to be too long, or which seem to deal with two very different ideas, separate them into smaller paragraphs If there are paragraphs which seem to short, join the short paragraph with another nearby paragraph or move it to another part of the paper Look at your transitional words and phrases to make sure there is coherence and cohesion (remember you need to help the reader understand the connections and distinctions between one paragraph/section and the next) Check pronouns referents to make sure there is clarity and singular/plural consistency (people-they, it-its, etc.) Eliminate unnecessary or obscure words Vary your sentence length and structure Maintain consistent use of verb tense and appropriate verbs Cite accurately and consistently your sources, using APA Make sure you paraphrase and summarize material (remember you are not supposed to simply copy what others say) Use a sufficient variety of sources (authors, articles, books, theories, etc.) Check that ALL your quotations are necessary and well written WRITING QUESTIONNAIRE Paragraph structure 1. Does each paragraph have a single central topic, stated or implied? 2. Is each paragraph well developed? (Have you provided enough reasons, examples, facts, definitions, etc., to support the topic sentence?) 3. Is each paragraph unified? (Do all sentences clearly relate to one topic?) 4. Is each paragraph coherent? (Does each sentence relate to the ones before and after it in a logical way? Are there appropriate transitions?) Mechanics (Grammar, Punctuation, Style, Format, Diction) 1. The paper shows great effort and commitment. The paper addresses the purpose of the assignment. The paper certainly follows instructions regarding length, number of sources, etc. Sentences structure is refined, creative, and varied. Format follows appropriate guidelines (APA) very well. The length and structure of sentences is very good. Facility with language is apparent. Usage is mostly correct and language is appropriate. Punctuation, spelling, capitalization, etc., are correct. The paper is logically organized. Paragraphs are coherent, well developed, and unified around clear topics. Transitions are logical, signaled by connecting language.

GOOD (4)
Response to the assignment is focused and coherent. The paper addresses the purpose of the assignment adequately. The paper follows instructions regarding length, number of sources, format, etc. Sentences are generally clear and complete in structure. Format follows appropriate guidelines (APA) adequately. The length and structure of sentences is adequate. Usage is regularly correct and language is appropriate. Punctuation, spelling, capitalization, etc., are appropriate. The paper is generally focused, with adequate sections. Paragraphs are coherent, adequately developed, and unified around concise topics. Transitions are logical, signaled by connecting language.

SATISFACTORY (3)
Contents and/or topics may show lack of care. The paper does not follow instructions/standards in all regards. The paper may be too short or long; it may not incorporate enough sources, etc. Intermittent grammar errors appear (e.g. fragments, subject/verb agreement) Little variety or sophistication in the length and structure of sentences. Writing is occasionally wordy and unclear. Other errors appear (in usage and word choice, spelling, capitalization, punctuation) Organization is not always logical or appropriate. Coherence and unity are not always successful. Ideas and topics are unfocused and partially developed. The paper occasionally skips around without adequate transitions. Knowledge of subject is acceptable but not deep. Ideas and concepts are supported acceptably with reasons, quotes, etc. Information sources are elementary or used without much elaboration.
