Wekiva Elementary School 1450 East Wekiva Trail Longwood, Florida 32779 Phone: 746-3150 Fax: 746-3163 February 2012 Principal: Marjorie Adamczyk Assistant Principal: Michelle Baker Principals Message Mid-year assessments have been completed and teachers are analyzing the data to check on students needs. Many teachers will be adjusting their instruction or intervention classes to help students be more successful on weak skill areas. In the intermediate grades, they will be looking at skills that will be tested on the FCAT. Our teachers are making efforts to contact parents to share their concerns with weak skill areas. During my conversations with the students, I stress every day to read 20 minutes every night. Wekiva has a motivation reading program called Accelerated Reader, AR Program. Students take a test to find their independent reading level. Books in the media center are leveled and teachers help students check out a book at their reading level. Teachers also have classroom incentives. In an effort to get more students excited about AR reading, I am going to announce on the Koala News Network top point winners. Parents can assist me with this initiative by making sure students have their library books in their backpacks and setting aside reading time every night. The more a student reads, the higher their vocabulary. Students with high level of vocabulary can easily take the Reading FCAT or any reading assessment with success. Speaking of FCAT, here are the dates. ________________________ FCAT Writes 2/28-29 FCAT Reading and Math 4/16-20 FCAT Science 4/24-25_______ Dividends, Lake Brantley Peer Counselors, and Tutorial Teachers are all assisting students to Beat the FCAT! Seminole County Sheriff Office Carls Safe Crossing Campaign Did You Know Bicycle safety has become a big topic around our offices. Children are taught how to ride a bicycle but never taught safety while riding their bikes. Many times students are involved in near misses because they dont stop and think prior to entering the roadway. Reassuring that the students know these safety tips and making sure they use a bicycle helmet is detrimental in keeping them safe. Besides, its the law that all students up to age 16 wear a bicycle helmet each and every time they get ready to ride. Please help support us on this very important issue. The funds we raise this year are even more necessary due to cut-backs in our school funding during these tight economic times. Parents are invited to come out and walk during their childs PE time. More detailed information will be sent home soon. If your business can donate prizes and/or gift certificates for our student prize drawing, please contact Mrs. Cook at 407-746-3151.
