Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani The Organising Committee of the 12th Arab Games, Doha 2011, has worked hard to produce a range of dedicated and informative publications full of details about all of the key activities associated with the Games as well as useful historical and current information for visitors. We hope that these publications provide useful information for participants and spectators from all parts of the world, who do us the honour of attending the Arab Games competitions. Through these you will easily be able to track competition results and find any other Games information. It is worth mentioning that there are publications for the general public as well as other specific publications for groups of participants such as athletes, technicians, referees and people working in specific fields. The team has worked hard to produce these guides. They have dedicated their skills and professional knowledge to produce publications that are accurate, easy to understand and of a high quality. We hope that we have succeeded in serving both our valuable guests to the State of Qatar and the people living in our country. We are optimistic that these Games will remain in the memories of all those who have been involved with their organisation and those who have attended these competitions as spectators and participants. We also hope, besides being a huge success, that this 12th edition of the Arab Games, Doha 2011, will encourage ongoing leaps forward in the quality and level of competition for the Arab athletes, so that theycan strengthen their position in international competitions, world championships, multisport events and in particular the Olympic Games. Welcome to Doha, the Capital of Sport. We want to wish good luck to all the teams and athletes and we hope that you enjoy your stay. We look forward to welcoming you again in the future for many events to come.

WELCoME MESSagE, ExECUtiVE DirECtor, 12th arab gaMES, Doha 2011

Khalid Hamad Al Mohannadi The Arab Games Organising Committee (AGOC) is enthusiastically preparing for the greatest Arab sporting event to date. Since I commenced my responsibilities as Executive Director, I have always been fully confident in our ability to plan for and implement this very important event. At AGOC, we abide by three principles: Teamwork Commitment Visionary thinking We are one team and are working together to accomplish our goal of ensuring that the Arab Games are remembered as an absolute success and that a positive legacy endures for the future of Qatar. AGOCs vision was inspired by His Highness the Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and His Highness the Heir Apparent, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. We are unifying our efforts and co-ordinating with other governmental and non-governmental organisations to enhance Qatars achievements on the global stage, and correctly position Qatar as a mustsee destination, as well as a major organiser of mega international sporting events. An event of the size and importance of the Arab Games could only be documented by a set of publications which would enable those who attend the event easily to follow its competitions and various activities. At the same time, the publications reflect the achievements of Qatari youth, whether those who are taking part in organising the event, or those who raise high the flag of Qatar by winning medals and achieving outstanding performances. Through organising this event, in addition to the sporting side, our aim is also to promote our traditions and heritage, as well as to confirm our organising abilities and skills and our readiness to meet the challenges of hosting future important events. The Games will remain in the memories of all of those who have been involved with them and those who have attended its competitions.

OFFICIAL NAME State of Qatar CAPITAL CITY Doha MAIN TOWNS Al Wakra, Al Rayyan, Al Khor, Dukhan, Mesaieed, Ras Laffan Industrial City, Al Shamal, Umm Salal NATIONAL DAY 18 December Qatar is one of the most dynamic economies in the Middle East. It has undergone remarkable economic and social development over the last 20 years. With an attractive business environment and a progressive national leadership, the country continues to be one of the fastest growing economies of the region. Having hosted numerous sporting events for over two decades, Qatar has become a major leader of sporting organisation and has helped accelerate the evolution of grassroots athlete development in Asia and the region. Since hosting the Asian Games in 2006, Doha has hosted major sporting events and has consistently invested in expanding its national athlete development program, which is supported by the global sports training expertise of the Aspire Academy for Sports Excellence. With an economic growth rate of 16% forecast for 2010 [this is old now remove or put in growth forecast for 2011], Qatar has a stable economic situation. The newly formed partnership between Qatar Exchange and the NYSEs Euronext 20% [please check this thought it was a 25% share] share ($200 million) represents the largest investment in a foreign exchange. [insert line space before next paragraph] Home to the third-largest natural gas reserves in the world, in 1997 the country became the biggest LNG producer in the world providing 31 million tons. In 2010, the total production will reach 77 million tons. Qatar is constructing the largest European LNG terminal in Wales and the first floating terminal in the world, located in Italy. Qatar is managing its resources, using oil and gas revenues to implement comprehensive reforms that are helping to transform Qatars economy from one that depends largely on oil and gas exports to a diversified economy that depends on knowledge and focuses on hightech industrial activities and services.

25

Despite the global financial challenges, Qatars real estate growth shows little sign of slowing down as most projects in both the public and the private sector are going ahead as planned. The new real estate and urban developments revive heritage and embrace modernity: the redevelopment of the centre of Doha will involve the construction of 750,000 m of mixed-use space that combines ancient culture with modern technology. The Pearl--Qatar, a multi-billion dollar 4 million mreclaimed island, by 2013 will provide upscale housing and amenities for more than 41,000 people, creating 32 km of new coastline. It is the first urban development in Qatar to allow international freehold ownership. Another new district, Lusail, will accommodate 200,000 people on over 35 km. It will include an Entertainment district and Energy city. The country is constantly adapting its infrastructures to meet new challenges: plans are underway to build a metro rail network to complement the transport infrastructure covering over 140 km when completed in 5 years time. Qatar is also on track to open its new airport with capacity for 24 million passengers and cargo of 1.4 million tons a year. This corresponds to the demand for additional international passengers capacity and will allow Doha to service two A380-800 super jumbos at the same time and 48,000 m of cargo terminals. The Qatar--Bahrain Bridge, also called the Friendship Bridge is planned to be 40 km long and will become the longest bridge in the world.

DoS aND DoNtS

plEaSE DO
Use greetings and formalities as they are particularly important when dealing with local people. It is considered impolite to start any conversation or request without saying Good Morning or Good Afternoon. Dress modestly in Qatar, which is a Muslim country with conservative dress codes. Loose trousers are acceptable for women, but avoid shorts and short skirts, strappy low-cut tops, see-through and transparent clothes. Hail Mowasalat turquoise taxis, which are safe, clean and metered. The majority of drivers speak English. When ordering a taxi by phone do so well in advance as delays can occur. Bargaining with shopkeepers is the norm in the souqs, so let go of your inhibitions and allow yourself some extra time for a good barter. Always counter the original offer with a lower price than you expect to pay and work slowly upwards to what you wish to spend. Watch out for separate counters and sections for women in banks and utilities. Enjoy Qatar at night as it is one of the safest places in the world and during the hot summer and Ramadan you will see people around town well into the early morning. Drink plenty of water in addition to other beverages. Use a high-factor sun block on all exposed skin (even in the winter sun), including the tops of your feet if wearing sandals. Children and fairskinned people also need a hat or cap.

31

Remember the air-conditioning, which can chill you to bone at the restaurants, cinemas and malls. Take along a light jacket or sweater as a precaution.

plEaSE DONT
Look or stare at people closely no matter how fascinating their dress! This general courtesy is particularly important in a society where modesty of dress and behaviour is mandatory. Ask an Arab lady for information or directions if you are a man. Respect the fact that some Arabic ladies are very private people in public places. They will be more than willing to help other females and if you are a family let your wife do the talking! Be offended if your handshake is refused by a Muslim. Handshakes are most often refused to members of the opposite sex. It is not meant personally, but simply a religious prohibition applicable to Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Take a photograph without permission of either people (including the police or armed forces) or sensitive sites. Arab women and many older people strongly object to being photographed. Be annoyed if your guest/contact is late just remember time is more elastic in Qatar. Use your left hand for eating with your fingers. Following Muslims conventions, the right hand is considered more propitious and the left hand is reserved for personal hygiene. Sit with the soles of your shoes or feet pointing to your Qatari hosts. It is considered insulting. Equally, dont sit with your back to other guests. Drink too much that your behaviour is affected in public. Alcohol in Qatar is a strictly regulated concession and there is zero tolerance for drink-driving or rowdy behaviour. Go barefoot in the sea where stonefish (which look like stones) lie along the shoreline. Although rare, the poisonous defense mechanism causes excruciating pain and needs a hospital visit. Also be on the lookout for jellyfish.
