FROM THE PASTORS DESK

Dear Parish Family, Peace and all good! Our readings this weekend clearly anticipate the beginning of Lent, which starts this Wednesday. February 22. In the first reading from the prophet Isaiah (chapter 43), we hear the voice of the Lords compassion and willingness to forgive us our wrongs: It is I who wipe out your offensesYour sins I remember no more. Lord, heal my soul, for I have sinned against You, pleads the psalmist in the responsory (Psalm 42). Child, your sins are forgiven, Jesus says in response to the paralytic (and to us) in todays Gospel account from Mark (2:1-12). In all of this, we hear the clear voice of a compassionate God who understands our weakness and welcomes us home to His love, His forgiveness, and His care. We need not live in fear of an avenging or vindictive deity. God is not out to punish us! On the contrary, in the first reading for Ash Wednesday from the prophet Joel (2:12-18), the Lord almost appears to plead with us, offering us every opportunity to return to His friendship and peace: Even now, return to me with your whole heart, begins the passage. In the Gospel from Mark, we are calledat Jesus direction and commandto undertake works of prayer, fasting, and almsgivingboth individually and as a communitybefore the Lord. These actions are in no way meant to attempt to repay or appease God for His forgiveness. God cannot be bribed or otherwise manipulated. Rather, these works represent on our part both the expression of our gratitude and our desire and resolve to commit ourselves to changing our ways. We do what we can on our part to bridge the distance our sin has created in order get closer to Goda loving and generous God-- who is already closer to us than our very breath. Lent is a solemn time, but is a season of joyful preparation, not a period of collective grief or mourning. Neither is it intended to be a thinly-disguised selfimprovement project (lose weight, give up candy/ smoking/ alcoholfor a bit). Rather, Lent is a soul improvement project meant to deepen our faith and at the same time heighten our awareness of our relationship with and participation in Gods live and love as Gods people. Our actions and commitments are meant to help us to redirect our attention, focus, and energy toward God and toward the real needs of our struggling brothers and sisters.

In that light, the salient question is not: What are you giving up for Lent?, but rather What do you want for Easter? What do we long for most deeply in our hearts if not to be in a better, deeper, more satisfying relationship with God and with others? In Lent, we are called to commit ourselves to getting out of the dead-end of self-centeredness and selfabsorption to enter more fully into a stronger, more confident and loving relationship with God, with our brothers and sisters, and with our true selves. This holy season gives us the opportunity to discover the answers to our spiritual search by living the questions. Let us pray for ourselves and for each other throughout this beautiful and challenging time. God bless,

ONE MISSION AT THE MISSION. A Letter from Fr. Chuck and Fr. David
Dear Parish Family, Peace and all good! Over the past two years, we have been working to create and promote greater unity here at Mission San Luis Rey. Our vision is that there be ONE MISSION AT THE MISSION: a welcoming and evangelizing presence of Jesus Christ in the North County. In order to realize our goal, we are considering the possibilities of uniting the Mission and Parish into a single organization. As a result of the recent Chapter meeting of the Franciscan Friars, the following changes will be put into place: Father Chuck Talley, ofm, Pastor, is being transferred. He will be leaving the Parish, effective May 15, to become pastor at Old Mission Santa Barbara and to assume the position of Secretary of Formation for the Province of St. Barbara. Father David Gaa, ofm, will remain Executive Director of Old Mission San Luis Rey and will assume additional responsibilities as Pastor of Mission San Luis Rey Parish after an interim period. Mr. Allen Hartman will be retiring as Business Manager of the Parish, effective March 31. Ms. Kathleen Flanagan has been hired as Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Old Mission San Luis Rey. In time, she will be contracted for administrative services at the Parish as well. Ms. Patricia Julian will be joining the staff of the Retreat Center, along with Brother Chris Best who has already arrived. Fr. Adrian Peelo and Fr. Luis Guzman will continue as associate Pastors at the Parish. We hope to have an additional friar assigned to the Parish. The Franciscan Friars will initiate a feasibility study to consider the ramifications (legal, ecclesiastical, financial, etc.) of uniting the Mission and Parish into a single entity. (At present, they are administered separately). We hope to complete the first phase of this study by Fall, 2012. We realize these are big and important decisions. But, we believe and trust that in the long run they will benefit our one mission at the Mission. We will continue to communicate with you on a regular basis. And we will most certainly do our best to welcome the newest members of our community even as we say goodbye to those who have served us so well. God bless, Fr. Charles Talley, ofm Pastor, MSLRP Fr. David Gaa, ofm Exec. Dir., OMSLR

Fr. Chuck PS: Many thanks for your tremendous generosity in supporting our parish school, Old Mission Montessori School, through our annual special collection during Catholic Schools Week.

FR. ADRIANS CORNER

Im back in my corner once again after a short absence. Lent is on the horizon so make sure you look at our Ash Wednesday schedule. There are Reconciliation Services planned for March and we will have visiting priests as well as our own friars to hear confessions. Come to confession during Lent its good for the soul. In Lent we do penance as a Church and prepare to celebrate the Lords Resurrection from the dead at Easter. The Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) is a wonderful way to enter into the spirit of the Lenten Season and to renew your faith. Our next Discernment Group Meeting is on Wednesday 29th of February at the Mission beginning at 7:00 p.m. and finishing at 9:00 p.m. Men over 21 are invited to come and share in conversation about faith and its impact on our life decisions. For further information call me at the Parish Office. St. Patricks Day falls on a Saturday this year. We celebrated in style last year at the Mission and this year we will do so again at the Serra Center during the 5:00 p.m. Mass on March 17th. There is a Pot Luck Dinner afterwards in the Parish Dining Room so bring something with you appetizer, entre or dessert drop it off at the Dining Room before Mass and pick up your platter or dish after dinner. If youd like to lend a hand with set-up, decorating, clean-up call Jim or Dyane Manning whose number is below 760-. 760-7243319 If you would like to serve as a Eucharistic Minister in the Parish, either on Sundays, Weekdays or to the Sick and Housebound, let us know. PARISH NEWS & HAPPENINGS

WHAT IS A SMALL CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY IN OUR PARISH?
Small Christian Communities, commonly called SCCs, are small groups of Christians who come together regularly to pray, share their human experiences, and share their faith with one another. The group reads scripture together and seeks ways to understand what God might be saying to them so they can respond to Gods presence in their lives and in the world. If you have ever been part of an RCIA group, or other small faith-based group you will know that this experience is like the early Church. Jesus said, Where two or three are gathered, there am I in their midst. (Matthew 18:19). Each community has its own Pastoral Facilitators who meet with the Core Team once a month for spiritual growth / guidance and training. Material presented at these Facilitators meetings are shared with the individual communities who meet weekly or twice a month in each others homes. We invite you to consider joining an SCC. We are making a difference in the lives of those who participate in them and in our Parish community. All cultures are welcomed to join or start a group (8 to 12 people). Find out more Eileen Costa, SCC Coordinator, at (760) 231-9930; Bartolo Mndez at (760) 945-3701; Tavale Tavale at (760) 295-4088. Be a part of bringing the presence of Christs love into your and our Community.

SCHOOL NOTES:
Another CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK has come and gone, but the theme FAITH, EDUCATION and SERVICE continues day after day, year after year! Did you know that our parish, Mission San Luis Rey, is the home of the only Catholic Montessori School within the Diocese of San Diego? We offer the unique Montessori approach within the framework of a quality catholic education. Our Mission is to be Model Stewards of God's gifts: His gift of faith, family, community and self; His gift of intelligence, a true appreciation of knowledge and the joy of learning; His gift of creation, a reverence and respect for all God has created. Our students are active participants within their education, a catholic journey for children from all backgrounds. Your parish school, Old Mission Montessori, is definitely a very special place and I feel very confident in communicating that sentiment having been part of this parish school for over 30 years! WE are genuinely blessed to be part of Mission San Luis Rey Parish and doubly blessed with the families within our parish community including those attending OMMS for their steadfast support of our mission and for their unexpected generosity! On behalf of the children, parents, faculty and staff, we would like to extend a special message expressing our deepest gratitude to our entire community for their faithful support, generosity and ardent dedication to Catholic Education! We hope to continue with our focus for many years to come, delighting in the fact that we can share our appreciation and joy of learning within our catholic community with everyone we meet! Thank you and May God continue to richly bless you and your family. ~ Wanda S. King ~

Del Escritorio del Prroco

Querida Familia Parroquial,
