Course Information
Course Description
This graduate-level course covers primary subjects and fundamental principles for the design of new bridges and the evaluation of existing bridges in accordance with current AASHTO specifications. The general procedures of bridge design and bridge evaluation will be discussed respectively, and the corresponding AASHTO code requirements will be explained through examples. In addition, modern technologies for condition assessment and monitoring of existing bridges will be introduced. No text book will be required. Necessary course materials will be provided through handouts. (This expanded course description differs from the printed 2011-2012 Engineering for Professionals Academic Catalog .)

Course Goal
The goal of this course is to prepare students for the ability to design new bridges and evaluate existing bridges in accordance with the latest specifications of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO).

Course Objectives
By the end of the course, students should be able to: 1. Grasp general knowledge and basic principles of bridge engineering. 2. Understand responsibilities, work, and products of bridge engineers. 3. Perform conventional analysis and design of new highway bridges per AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications. 4. Perform conventional load rating and fatigue evaluation of existing highway bridges per AASHTO Manual for Bridge Evaluation.

When This Course is T picall Offered

This course is typically offered every other year in the fall semester. Current sequence is Fall 2011, Fall 2013, and so on.
