Definition
Atrial septal defect is characterized by a defect (Syphilis/ Psora) in the interatrial septum allowing pulmonary venous return from the left atrium to pass directly to the right atrium. Depending on the size of the defect, size of the shunt, and associated anomalies, this can result in a spectrum of disease from no significant cardiac sequelae to right-sided volume overload (Psora/ Sycosis), pulmonary arterial hypertension (Psora/ Sycosis), and even atrial arrhythmias (Psora).

Causes and risk factors

y y y

Rubella infections during pregnancy, seems to increase the likelihood of the child developing a heart condition, including an ASD (Psora/ Syphilis) Drug and alcohol use during pregnancy can also increase the chances of congenital heart defects in children and lead to an ASD (Causa Occasionalis/ Psora) Genetic predisposition for heart defects and other types of birth defects (Syphilis)

Symptoms
While larger septal defects will be easier to notice in a child at a young age, smaller ones may not present any symptoms until middle age is reached, and in some cases even later.
y y y y y y y y

Regular respiratory infections during childhood (Psora/ Syphilis) Poor appetite during childhood (Psora/ Syphilis) Stunted growth as an infant (Psora/ Syphilis) Bluish tint to the skin (Psora/ Syphilis) Fatigue (Psora) Swelling in the abdomen, feet, or legs (Psora/ Sycosis) A heart murmur (Psora/ Syphilis/ Sycosis) Trouble breathing (Psora/ Sycosis)

y y

Heart palpitations (Psora) Difficulty breathing after exercise (Psora/ Sycosis/ Syphilis)

Diagnosis
y y y y y y y y

By Auscultation to listen to the heart can uncover unusual sounds, especially a whooshing sound. A murmur could also be present. MRI of the heart A chest X-Ray Echocardiogram ECG Transesophageal echocardiography Patients over the age of thirty five may undergo a coronary angiography Cardiac catheterization

Chest PA Xray showing prominent aortic notch, pulmonary artery and pulmonary congestion due to PAH, Open view of ASD, large hole in septum and ECG changes in ASD

Treatment
Surgery is the best option for the treatment of this condition, although those who have a very small hole or present no symptoms may not require surgery in the least.

Prognosis
Small defects left untreated could cause no problems whatsoever, while leaving other defects untreated could cause significant problems later in life and result in shortened life spans.

Complications
y y y y

Pulmonary hypertension (Sycosis/ Psora) Irregular heartbeats (Psora) Heart failure (Syphilis/ Sycosis) The chance of a stroke is increased significantly, and blood clots can easily pass through the opening in the heart and move to the brain, causing death (Psora/ Sycosis)
