PROJECT OUTLINE _________________________________________________________________________ Project title: Program: Course: Faculty responsible: Due date: Group Research Presentation & Project Associate Degree Semester 4 Rooms Division Management No 403 Francisco De Luna Fernandez See calendar document

Project Overview: This is a comprehensive project that brings together research and team working skills. Each group will be given a topic (via email) from the 4th semester course and after two weeks of research will present the outcome to the class. A research project will also be submitted a week after the presentation. Overall Aim: This assessment is designed to allow students to research a Rooms Division Management concept that will be part of the course content and core topic of Revenue Management. It will also encourage students to put the topic into an industry context, link this to real industry examples and thus use this research data to provide critical solutions to a problem or scenario. LEARNING OUTCOMES: 1. Demonstrate an understanding of theories, models and techniques used in industry that relate to the managerial environment to ensure maximum revenue trapping and optimum cash flow. 2. Consider the hospitality consumer in relation to psychological models, contract law, perception, needs expectation, the service encounter, loyalty development and satisfaction evaluation. 3. Relate the importance of the guest to overall hotel performance. Assessment Tasks: 1. To explain the Rooms Division Management concept(s). 2. To discuss up to date Industry examples related to the concept(s). 3. To critically propose recommendations for best industry practice in relation to a set problem or scenario. 4. To recommend a solution or idea to maximize revenue trapping. 5. To develop a research culture and produce fully referenced work. B.Miller 2009-2

Groups will be chosen by students and will have ideally an equal number of members (to be organized in the first week of class). Using the Bulle library resources and the Internet, the groups should research and synthesize the main points of the topic that will be allocated to them 2 weeks prior to the presentation. The research question will be in two parts 1) the presentation topic and 2) written paper. See example below. Each member will have to research, present the topic and be part of the overall process. An individual evaluation will be credited to each student in the presentation and a group grade will be given for the 4th semester integrated project written paper. Sample Research Topic: 1. EVALUATING SERVICE DELIVERY & CUSTOMER SATISFACTION Presentation Topic: It has been emphasized that if organizations are to survive they must be competent to provide the product features required by customers at the threshold level. Parasuraman, Zeithmal and Berry have developed five dimensions of service quality perception. How do we know when a customer is really happy? Would these methods of evaluation differ in new openings and that of established hotel properties? Paper Topic: Service is in the eye of the beholder. Relate this statement to service delivery and customer satisfaction at a single hotel. How can the hotel protect itself from customer dissatisfaction and thus increasing their market share? How can they make sure they reach their mission and how can they retain clients? Please include arguments where applicable. Presentation Details: Please see the separate calendar for dates corresponding with your group number. Each group will have one session (50 minutes) to present and discuss. Word Length of Written Paper: Between 2500 and 3000 words. Please identify the actual number of words at the beginning of the paper.

More detailed requirements can be found overleaf.

The Research Presentation Presentation Organization & Methodology: Each student should speak for at least ten minutes to share the group results with the class. Each student should produce a minimum of five slides during each section. All 3rd party data must be referenced this is after all your research. He/she should apply the speaking rules that were learned over previous semesters (also see attached marking scheme page 1). Each individual in the group must answer at least one of the pre-prepared questions given by the rest of the class. Marks will be given for a critical approach to the answers and the use of any evidence used to support the answer. A hard copy of the PowerPoint Slides should also be produced and given to the rest of the class. Articles can be copied and collated in order for your interested classmates, so they may have a copy if they so wish. Short videos from current affairs programs may also be used. Group Prepared Questions: All students that are not taking part of the presentation MUST produce at least 2 original questions per group. There may not be time to cover them all, but you are likely to need to prepare more than two. This is vital to the quality of the discussion and you will receive a question-related grade at the end of the semester. You must hand-in a copy of your questions to the tutor at the beginning of the session indicating both your group number and members.

REMEMBER THIS IS A PROJECT BASED ON RESEARCH AND PLAGERISM WILL BE DEALT WITH ACCORDINGLY. NB: See marking sheet attached. Statement of Authorship (GIHE Template): I confirm that this work is my own. Additionally, I confirm that no part of this coursework, except where clearly quoted and referenced, has been copied from material belonging to any other person e.g. from a book, handout, another student. I am aware that it is a breach of GIHE regulations to copy the work of another without clear acknowledgement and that attempting to do so renders me liable to disciplinary procedures. To this effect, I have uploaded my work onto Turnitin and have ensured that I have made any relevant corrections to my work prior to submission. Followed by a list of signatures. Turnitin Statement (GIHE Policy): You are allowed to upload as many drafts as you feel necessary before the final due date, as long as you leave a 24 hour gap between each upload. It is your responsibility to check your own Originality Report and to ensure that you have removed any possible elements of plagiarism or bad practice (please refer to your Referencing Manual on how to reference correctly) You must not upload your report onto another persons account. If not, your paper may not be assessed, leading to a zero. The final piece of work must be uploaded in enough time for the system to accept it before the due time and date. The system sometimes takes longer than normal to accept reports (from 30 min up to few hours) You are required to submit both a soft copy of your report onto Turnitin and a hard copy to Reception (or other designated location stated on the Project Outline), otherwise the work will not be accepted and you may receive zero for your work. The hard copy will be graded and your soft report on Turnitin will be used for reference only. Referencing will be checked on the hard copy as Turnitin only checks similarities. Should you have difficulty using the system, you must contact your lecturer immediately (leaving this until the last minute is unacceptable). It is YOUR responsibility to upload your own reports and last minute IT issues will not be considered as mitigation.

Other Requirements: Please hand in using a plastic or lever folder do not bind or use plastic sleeves. If you do not reference - you will either receive a reduced grade due to bad practice or as a worse case scenario be given a zero due to plagiarism (see handbook guidelines).

In case you need CRS Bibliography (books, articles, newspapers) Personal Sources Answers to Questions Contact Library & Internet (ProQuest & Emerald, etc) (secondary research) Work Experience, Colleagues, Family & Friends (primary research) Miss Miller

Assessment Criteria & Weighting: Your team work and quality of the communications within the group will be important. Individual Presentation Report (Group Grade) Question/Discussion Input 40% 50% 10%

The question and discussion 10% is at the discretion of the tutor. If she feels students are not working then you will be given a zero. Concerning a student complaint, the student not working may be asked by the tutor to work solo. Do not let this happen to you. Assessment /Grading Sheets will be given you in week 1, usually with this paper. This task will be 50% of the RDM (403) course grade 25% group written report and 25% individual presentation grade. Please ensure that you approach your instructor with any questions or problems you might have with either the task or the group work, well before the deadline of the presentation. It is, however, preferable to resolve any problems with your group before approaching your teacher. No grades will be given back to students until all presentation are seen and written reports marked. Grades may also be part of the quality control program and therefore be reviewed by the Exam Board Committee before release. So patience is a virtue. IMPORTANT: The minimum criteria are important for a student to obtain the lowest pass grade of 5.5. Please see handbook grading sheets for further details.

Poor group attendance and cooperation (basically not doing any work) can result in a student being removed from the assessment should a student action result in exclusion further action can also be taken by the academic office (e.g. not being allowed to sit the final exam paper). Attendance and participation is mandatory. Failure to attend or participate will result in a mark of 0 (zero). Students are responsible for bringing a copy of the medical certificate to the instructor within 1 day of the absence in order to be excused for the poor attendance. This must also go through the academic procedure as stated in your student handbook. During every presentation the rest of the class will be reviewed and poor performance by individuals (e.g. not joining in, poor attendance, asking poor/irrelevant questions, etc) will be noted. If no improvement is shown than the individual may also receive a 0 (zero). The tutor is willing to meet with the group before the presentation. However this session is only available once, so please make sure you make the most of it. As an end note, the tutor will not tell you what to say, write or check PowerPoint presentation content, as this is part of the assessment.
