Highlights

On a month-on-month seasonally adjusted (m-o-m SA) basis, non-oil domestic


exports (NODX) decreased by 3.6 per cent in April 2011, following the previous
months 3.0 per cent decline.

On a year-on-year (y-o-y) basis, NODX contracted by 1.8 per cent in April 2011,
compared to the 9.9 per cent increase in the previous month, due to electronic
NODX.

On a m-o-m SA basis, non-oil re-exports (NORX) declined by 0.7 per cent in April
2011, following the 2.2 per cent decline in the previous month.

On a y-o-y basis, NORX contracted by 2.0 per cent in April 2011, in contrast to the
2.5 per cent increase in the previous month, due to electronic NORX.

Definitions for certain product categories have been revised for reports containing data from July 2010
onwards. The revised definitions follow international guidelines.

(a) Performance of Key Trade Components

Total Trade
4.

On a m-o-m SA basis, total trade contracted by 4.2 per cent in April 2011, compared

to the 9.1 per cent increase in the previous month. Total exports declined by 2.2 per cent in
April 2011, in contrast to a 2.2 per cent increase in the previous month. Total imports
contracted by 6.4 per cent in April 2011, compared to an 18 per cent expansion in the
previous month.

On a y-o-y basis, total trade rose by 4.8 per cent in April 2011, following the 15 per

cent increase in the previous month. Total exports grew by 5.0 per cent in April 2011,
following the 13 per cent expansion in the previous month. Total imports increased by 4.5
per cent in April 2011, following the 17 per cent rise in the preceding month.

NORI is a coincident indicator for NODX.

On a y-o-y basis, NODX declined by 1.8 per cent in April 2011, following the 9.9 per

cent growth in the previous month, due to a decline in electronic domestic exports.

Electronic products. On a y-o-y basis, electronic NODX contracted by 10 per cent

in April 2011, after the 14 per cent decline in the previous month. The decrease in electronic
domestic exports was largely due to disk drives, parts of ICs and parts of PCs.

Non-electronic products. On a y-o-y basis, non-electronic NODX expanded by 2.8

per cent in April 2011, following the 24 per cent increase in the previous month. The rise in
non-electronic NODX was led by pharmaceuticals, specialised machinery and plastic plates
& sheets.

On a m-o-m SA basis, oil domestic exports declined by 3.2 per cent in April 2011,

following a rise of 9.5 per cent in the previous month. On a y-o-y basis, oil domestic exports
expanded by 24 per cent in April 2011, after the preceding months 44 per cent increase.
The y-o-y growth of oil domestic exports was mainly due to sales to India (+251 per cent),
China (+86 per cent) and Panama (+51 per cent). In volume terms, oil domestic exports
decreased by 3.8 per cent in April 2011, compared to the 10 per cent expansion in the
previous month.

Non-oil Re-exports (NORX)

On a m-o-m SA basis, non-oil re-exports (NORX) decreased by 0.7 per cent in April

2011, after the 2.2 per cent contraction in the previous month, due to a decline in electronic
NORX.

On a y-o-y basis, electronic NORX decreased by 6.2 per cent in April 2011,

compared to the 0.2 per cent rise in the previous month. The contraction in electronic NORX
was due to ICs (-5.8 per cent), diodes & transistors (-28 per cent) and parts of ICs (-35 per
cent).

On a y-o-y basis, non-electronic NORX increased by 2.8 per cent in April 2011, after

the 5.3 per cent rise in the previous month. The expansion in non-electronic NORX was due
to petrochemicals (+33 per cent), electrical circuit apparatus (+35 per cent) and
pharmaceuticals (+56 per cent).

NORX to all of the top 10 NORX markets, except Indonesia, the US, the EU 27 and

Hong Kong, decreased in April 2011. The top three contributors to the NORX contraction in
April 2011 were Malaysia (-9.1 per cent), China (-6.7 per cent) and Japan (-12 per cent).

EU 27 NODX to the EU 27 expanded by 14 per cent in April 2011, following the 3.1

per cent rise in the previous month, because of both electronic and non-electronic NODX.
Electronic NODX to the EU 27 grew by 14 per cent in April 2011, following the 17 per cent
increase in the preceding month, due to ICs (+59 per cent), diodes & transistors (+402 per
cent) and PCs (+8,976 per cent). Non-electronic NODX to the EU 27 grew by 13 per cent in
April 2011, in contrast to the 2.9 per cent decline in the preceding month, due to
pharmaceuticals (+21 per cent), specialised machinery (+195 per cent) and pumps for
liquids (+771 per cent).

China NODX to China expanded by 3.7 per cent in April 2011, following the 9.6

per cent rise in the previous month, because of non-electronic NODX. Electronic NODX to
China contracted by 24 per cent in April 2011, following the 22 per cent decline in the
preceding month, due to ICs (-19 per cent), parts of PCs (-42 per cent) and disk drives (-56
per cent). Non-electronic NODX to China grew by 17 per cent in April 2011, following the 26
per cent increase in the preceding month, due to specialised machinery (+175 per cent), disk
media products (+58 per cent) and heating & cooling equipment (+165 per cent).

US NODX to the US contracted by 5.0 per cent in April 2011, in contrast to the 3.7

per cent rise in the previous month, because of electronic NODX. Electronic NODX to the
US decreased by 12 per cent in April 2011, following the 25 per cent decline in the preceding
month, due to disk drives (-67 per cent), parts of ICs (-24 per cent) and ICs (-2.5 per cent).
Non-electronic NODX to the US grew by 0.4 per cent in April 2011, following the 49 per cent
increase in the preceding month, due to pharmaceuticals (+456 per cent), plastic plates &
sheets (+6,037 per cent) and measuring instruments (+61 per cent).

Hong Kong NODX to Hong Kong contracted by 19 per cent in April 2011, following

the 20 per cent decrease in the previous month, because of both electronic and nonelectronic NODX. Electronic NODX to Hong Kong declined by 23 per cent in April 2011,
following the 25 per cent decrease in the preceding month, due to parts of ICs (-49 per cent),
ICs (-19 per cent) and parts of PCs (-26 per cent). Non-electronic NODX to Hong Kong
contracted by 11 per cent in April 2011, following the 11 per cent decline in the preceding
month, due to electrical machinery (-46 per cent), aircraft parts (-55 per cent) and nonmonetary gold (-74 per cent).

Malaysia NODX to Malaysia contracted by 5.1 per cent in April 2011, following the

0.5 per cent decline in the previous month, because of electronic NODX. Electronic NODX to
Malaysia decreased by 20 per cent in April 2011, following the 4.5 per cent decline in the
preceding month, due to office machines (-94 per cent), parts of PCs (-29 per cent) and
consumer electronics (-66 per cent). Non-electronic NODX to Malaysia grew by 7.6 per cent
in April 2011, following the 2.1 per cent increase in the preceding month, due to glassware,
food preparations (+82 per cent) and glass (+100 per cent).

Indonesia NODX to Indonesia contracted by 4.7 per cent in April 2011, following

the 12 per cent decrease in the previous month, because of both electronic and nonelectronic NODX. Electronic NODX to Indonesia declined by 13 per cent in April 2011,
following the 28 per cent contraction in the preceding month, due to PCs (-77 per cent), parts
of PCs (-19 per cent) and capacitors (-65 per cent). Non-electronic NODX to Indonesia
decreased by 2.9 per cent in April 2011, following the 7.8 per cent decline in the preceding
month, due to household goods (-96 per cent), electrical circuit apparatus (-49 per cent) and
motorcycles (-82 per cent).

Japan NODX to Japan expanded by 3.9 per cent in April 2011, in contrast to the

7.0 per cent contraction in the previous month, because of non-electronic NODX. Electronic

NODX to Japan decreased by 17 per cent in April 2011, following the 28 per cent decline in
the preceding month, due to parts of ICs (-55 per cent), ICs (-13 per cent) and disk drives (32 per cent). Non-electronic NODX to Japan grew by 17 per cent in April 2011, following the
4.1 per cent increase in the preceding month, due to pharmaceuticals (+34 per cent),
medical apparatus (+205 per cent) and measuring instruments (+82 per cent).

Remaining top markets 4 NODX to Taiwan and Thailand increased, while NODX

to South Korea contracted in April 2011.

NODX to Taiwan expanded by 8.8 per cent in April 2011, following the 3.2

per cent rise in the previous month, because of both electronic and non-electronic
NODX. Electronic NODX to Taiwan grew by 4.3 per cent in April 2011, in contrast to
the 14 per cent decline in the preceding month, due to ICs (+13 per cent), parts of
PCs (+70 per cent) and disk drives (+146 per cent). Non-electronic NODX to Taiwan
expanded by 14 per cent in April 2011, following the 33 per cent increase in the
preceding month, due to specialised machinery (+43 per cent), aircraft parts (+358
per cent) and glass (+6,172 per cent).

NODX to South Korea contracted by 13 per cent in April 2011, following the

0.9 per cent decline in the previous month, because of both electronic and nonelectronic NODX. Electronic NODX to South Korea decreased by 12 per cent in April
2011, following the 19 per cent decline in the preceding month, due to ICs (-19 per
cent), parts of ICs (-45 per cent) and diodes & transistors (-41 per cent). Nonelectronic NODX to South Korea contracted by 13 per cent in April 2011, in contrast
to the 10 per cent increase in the preceding month, due to structural parts (-100 per
cent), petrochemicals (-74 per cent) and other specialty chemicals (-26 per cent).

NODX to Thailand expanded by 3.3 per cent in April 2011, in contrast to the

2.7 per cent contraction in the previous month, because of non-electronic NODX.
Electronic NODX to Thailand decreased by 2.3 per cent in April 2011, following the
13 per cent decline in the preceding month, due to parts of PCs (-36 per cent), disk
drives (-65 per cent) and consumer electronics (-43 per cent). Non-electronic NODX
to Thailand grew by 5.3 per cent in April 2011, following the 1.0 per cent increase in
the preceding month, due to civil engineering equipment parts (+273 per cent),
electrical circuit apparatus (+61 per cent) and jewellery (+6,661 per cent).

Emerging markets 5 NODX to emerging markets decreased by 14 per cent in April

2011, following the 95 per cent expansion in the previous month. The decline in NODX to the
emerging markets was due mainly to Latin America and South Asia.
