No hst of figures could give a clearer idea of the size of the ill-starred Titanic than the above photographic diagram, which shows the vessel as she would have appeared if transplanted to Tratfalgar-square. Her bows almost touch the steps of the church of

St., Martin'=-in-the-Fields,; while her stern is seen penetrating through some buildings [ to the doors of the offices of the White Star Line in Cockspur-strect. It will be noticed that it is 175ft. to the tops of the funnels. This is only 10ft. lower than the spire of St.

From comic to tragic, all along the scale, the extraordinary, th<; "impossible," the unreal quality in the life outside books rivals ?\nd outruns the carefully prepared surprises within them. Taky a year's news, haphazard, from any year and see. Suppose a girl without remnrkable attractions were the heroine of a book- Imagine it in what Mr. Anstey called a "highly stimulating cover" with frontispiece in ciaide, colours. The heroine is unattractive. Yet by a ceitain self-confidence the. author asks ue lo assume she deceives clever men into lendiui; her money, keeps crfulitors away, jilots and plans foi' a life of lomfori on nolliini-!: a ye;:ir, iinally give;; it mil ihat she ha;i (Usn]]pcare.d-- -dead i)ei-l-);i,p-i i'- with fdl bei' liabiiiiiL'S. Mr, Bonar Law Declares Ulster Will Prove a Rock.

FLIES FROM TO F R A N C E .

MAJOKITY 9L
For t h e first reading: of t h e H o m e Rule Bill Agratnst 360 260

Government majority 94 Amid great Ministerial and Nationalist enthusiasm the Home Rule Bill vvas read a first time in the tlouse of Commons last night. The demonstration was renewed when the Prima Minister, a moment later. Bill in hand, marched to the Bar to ''bring i n " tlie n^eaittre. Ministerialists, Labour men, ami Nationalists sprang to their feet and wildly waved i\ats, handkerchiefs and papers luitil Mr. Asquith had stepped up the tloor and formally presented the Bill iU the table. The demonstration ionned a fitting climax to the closing speeches. Mr. iJonar Law whipped his supporters up to the almost enthusiasm, and when he sat down Mr. F . E. .Smith del!glited]y_ patted hini on the back, and several Unionists bebind him leant forward and temJereci their congratulations. Mr. Law, who was received with loud Opposition cheers, repudiated the idea that the granting of Home Rule would relieve the congestion of business in the British Pailiament, Every matter of disagreement between the Irish Pariiaineii; c.--"' the House of Commons would be fought out agaic iu the British Parliament. Criticising the financial proposals, Mr. Law remarked that the Prime Minister had said that " w e ouglit to cut our losses," but \ve are asked to gamble on the chance -of god government in Ireland. Instead of cutting our losses tlie result of this arrangement, if theref was not good government in Ireland, would be that we should be throwing the money advanced for land purchase into the sea. REVIVAL OF SMUGGLING. " Every time the subject of Home Rule has been brought forward there h.as been a great fall in all Irish securities," Mr. Law proceeded. He quite admitted thai since tliis Bill had been intfodnced the fall had not jjone any farther, but that was because people did not believe the Bu. was going to [lass. (Opposition cheers.) He pointed out that the granting of Home Rule would harm Irish industries, l>ut there was one industry whii h was going to flourish in Ireland namely, smuggling. Every ship that left L,nglaud for Ireland would have to be examined, arid every parcel that came through the post wouM have to be opened. That vvas the proposal of a free trade fiovernment. Nine-tentlis of the Pr-otestants in Ireland were cor.vinceil that under an Irish Parliament tiiey would suffer religious disabilities. CB!M IN NAME OF LIBEBTY. They could not put anything in the Bill which would protect tlu" Protestants. The Opposition of Ulster made the granting of Home Rule impossible, and he could not iindersland on what grounds the Governnumt couhT justify this Bill, or that they could pretend that tltey were'going to force the people of fJlster to submit to a Government which they detested and abhorred. (Opposition cheers.) The Government were proposing to commit this crime, and to commit it in the name of liberty. The people of Ulster were ready to lay down their lives in what thry l:)e!ieved to be the cause of justice and liberty. How were the Government to overcome such resistance? Could the Prime .Vljnister give an order to shoot down men vyhose only crime vvas that they declined to be driven out of the comiuunitv and the privileges of the union. (Opposition (dieers.) This was the rock on which this Bill v.yuld inevitably suffer shipwreck. GOVERNMENT INSUtT. Ill the earlier part of the debate during the evening. Mr. Walter I-ong, in a forceful speech, declared that the .Bill had l>een brought in behind the backs of the people without giving them an opportunity of knowing anything of the means by which the Government intend to effect this immense change in the Constitution. " H o w many supporters of the Government," he cuttingly demanded, " really believe that the better government oi Ireland is going to be secured by the introduction of Hcune R u l e ? " " T h e Bill will perhai>s propitiate tliose who have put themselves against the British Ciovernment and British rule, and have poured contempt upon everything which represents the British Empire. " For the purpose of bringing about this peace and goodwill among men the Government have not hesitated to trample upon and insult those who have asked for nothing more than Englishmen asked for themselvesthose who have ever been loyal to the Crown and the Flag! " No soft words uttered at the last moment," Mr. Long concluded, "will control us. No threats will disturb us. We believe the path of duly lies clear before u s . " "T, P.\s" HELir.fOUS ARGUMENT. With waving arms Mr. T. P. C^Connor etiiphasised his arguments in favour of the Bill. "AH this charge of religious persecution," he cried, " i s one of the emptiest and the meanest and one of the most lying of calumnies. " T h e Unionist members for Ulster were inn against the rest of Ireland. They were against the whole of the Empire, and the whole oi the vvorld. There was not a single measure of toleration which they had not strenuously opposed."

Tlie governor of the |>risnn communicated tlte decisicm to Seddim, who received the news with suppressed eiuolion. A final inlervu-vv with his wife or other rchUives will be [lUowed.
