Love is the ultimate, Ken answered, when I asked him if it was a conscious choice singing love songs. By the way, that is also the name of one of his many albums - Love Is the Ultimate. To answer the question how does it feel to be one the greatest pioneers in the reggae industry, Mr. Boothe offered, It is a blessing, and finally I am able to pick the fruit off the tree. Yes the tree is ripe, it is ripe fully. As to the evolution of reggae music, Ken believes, it is not there a hundred percent. Eighty percent are trying and the other twenty percent are negativities. He wisely pointed out, Many of us were not born with gold spoon in our mouths. Most of grew up in poor community. Mr. Boothe has high regards for the DJs. Ken spoke about teaching music schools. He thinks educators should make music a priority in schools. Unfortunately, time was an essence. He had to get back to the studio where he was preparing a tribute for the late

legend Bob Marley. With the promise of a mano-a mano, (in this case man to woman), when he gets to New York we said our goodbyes and thank you-s. Yes we havent heard and seen the last of the man. l know, many of you are waiting to hear the The Train Is Coming Down Baby and scores of hit songs after hit songs. Hey, this is an event, the Linkage Third Annual Award Show, you dont want to miss. Most importantly, you dont want to miss a once in a lifetime experience and you definitely dont want to miss the internationally acclaimed reggae artist, Ken Boothe. You know what to do. The event inspired schools and communities nationwide to organize local celebrations, establish history clubs and host performances and lectures. In the decades that followed, mayors of cities across the country began issuing yearly proclamations recognizing Negro History Week. 2. Harriet Tubman Harriet was born into slavery and found a means of escape with the help of her abolitionist neighbors. In 1849, she fled her slave life in Maryland and found respite in Philadelphia. There she formulated a plan to liberate the rest of her family by way of the Underground Railroad, a system that involved moving slaves from one safe house to another under rigid secrecy. Later, she worked as a nurse during the Civil War and was a proponent of both womens suffrage and the abolitionist movement. 3. Health At Sunrise Quick Tip

CASSAVA (Manihot Esculenta)
Common Names: Sweet Cassava, Bitter Cassava, Manioc, Tapioca, Yucca. There are two types of cassava, the bitter and the sweet. Both are widely used. Cassava is a root that contains significant amounts of Calcium, Phosphorus, Vitamin C, and is very rich in starch. The Cassava Leaves are a rich source of Protein. Cassava Leaves, when steamed, can be eaten as a vegetable, like spinach. Cassava can be soft-boiled and served along with vegetables to replace the common boiled white potatoes. Traditionally it is used in soups and stews for nourishment, or deep fried (after boiling or steaming) and used as one would do fried potatoes; makes a great mid-morning and afternoon snack for children. Cassava Meal or Flour is used to make dumplings and to enrich soups and gravies. Tapioca is made from dried powdered Cassava (Manioc) Root; and is a starchy flavorless powder which is commonly used as the base to make puddings and cakes; coconut pudding, rice pudding, bread pudding, tapioca vanilla pudding. Cassava Meal and/ or Tapioca is added to make gazada cakes, sweet cassava cakes, holiday rum cake, and other traditional sweet delectables. The medicinal benefits and uses are endless. Cassava Meal, (from Cassava Root, also known as Yucca Root), is a basic staple in the Caribbean, South America and Africa. Cassava Meal is used in the same way as cornmeal, and is the worlds best fiber. It is nutritious and heals at the same time. It acts as a mop or broom, cleaning and sweeping out the stomach, intestines, and colon areas. It absorbs fats, acids and other poisons before they enter the bloodstream and sweeps them out, thereby controlling blood cholesterol levels, preventing heart disease, constipation and retards the growth of cancer in the stomach and intestines. In Africa, where Cassava Meal is used daily, heart disease, stomach and intestinal

cancers are rare to non-existent. Cassava Meal can be taken by sprinkling two teaspoons in one cup of water; sweeten with honey or brown sugar, like they do in Africa. Drink daily, especially in the morning after brushing the teeth. Taper portions according to age, size and weight. The freshly cut Cassava can be applied to snakebites, boils and external ulcers to promote healing. It can be grated and applied as a poultice for eczema and abscesses as well. The starch of the Cassava, known as tapioca and in Argentina, it is mixed into a paste and applied warm to the breast of nursing mothers to relieve inflammations, hardness and caked breast. The fresh Cassava Leaves, applied to the head, will relieve headaches. Putting the leaves in a babys bed, between the sheep and mattress, will ensure a restful sleep. Peace and Blessings. JO Jamaica. CAGED dancehall Deejay Vybz Kartel, was again remanded in custody when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrates Court on February 1st, to answer to a charge of perverting the course of justice. His co-accused Vanessa Gaza Slim Saddler and Andrew Henry, also known as Pim Pim had their bails extended. All three were ordered to return to court on May 8. The court was told that the police could not account for Henrys passport and as a result he could not take up his bail which was offered to him on January 16. A condition of bail was that Henry hand over his travel documents to the police. Senior Magistrate Judith Pusey then re-

versed the condition to allow Henry to take up the $200,000 bail offer. The prosecution is contending that Henry contracted Saddler to make a report to the police that she had been robbed by Clive Lizard Williams. Williams murder was, in fact, committed before the date of the alleged robbery and the prosecution is contending that the report was made in order to give the impression that Williams was not dead. Williams was allegedly beaten to death in Havendale, St Andrew in August 16 last year over the disappearance of two firearms. The crown is also contending that Vybz Kartel participated in the beating.

ST. Voice in the Wind is aired on Wednesday afternoons, 4 pm on Linkage Radio. It is with great anticipation that I look forward to sharing the word of God with our audience. Friends in Radioland, keep listening, viewing live on Ustream and calling in with those prayer requests and testimonies. The first month of the new year has gone by quickly. The busyness of everyday life, work, family, friends and social engagements of all kinds seem to demand so much of our time. At times it seems 24 hours are not enough to meet the flurry of activities we attend to. At times we try to analyze what was accomplished by all the busyness and find we dont have much to show for it. Regardless of how we use our 24 hours each day, we all need to prioritize and the only choice for the first on our list GOD! The word of God teaches that we should put God first and then we will be successful. We all desire success and spend much of our time working toward goals of achievement to suit the worlds perception of what success is. Let us turn from our ways and try the Gods way. Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Joshua 1:8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. The Word of God states that we can have good success opposite of good success would be bad success. Now some would ask, How can success be bad? Success according to Nanny, or Granny Nanny as she was affectionately called, was a brilliant military strategist. She was equally adept at being a shrewd military tactician and the spiritual leader of the Windward Maroons, providing the group with military and religious stability. She unified the Maroon alliance and directed an effective resistance movement against the British. As the leader of the main group of the Windward Maroons, her military genius was unparalleled. Maroon strategies included the use of camouflage, using bush wrapped around their bodies to blend in with the environment. In addition, Asante retentions were utilized in developing communications systems based on the cadences of drums and aben-

world standard sometimes destroys lives or comes with much grief. Well, success is not just embodied in our financial wealth but also in our entire well being. God does want to bless people but He also has expectations for His people! Proverbs10:22 The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it. Ecclesiastes 5:7 For in the multitude of dreams and many words there are also divers vanities: but fear thou God. Deuteronomy 8:18 But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day. Are we ready to be honest with ourselves? Are we ready for success Gods way? Are we then willing to do as He has commanded? Are we hindering our own success by our disobedience? Are we limiting the success of Gods kingdom? Are we willing to repent? Will we surrender our ways so He can cause us to be successful? And are we willing to give Him His due honor when we are successful? God bless You All Missionary Monteque

gs (horns), which were unintelligible to the enemy. Also, the adherence to their spiritual beliefs presumably involved and invoked supernatural forces. Bolstered by tales of their ferocity, this provided an element of psychological warfare, which struck terror in the hearts of others. Nanny, in particular, was believed to be an obeah woman who used her powers to exercise considerable control over her followers. In addition to being a brilliant military strategist and fearless leader, Nanny played an important role psychologically by not only instilling confidence and courage in her followers but preserving loyalty by administering oaths of secrecy. She struck terror in the hearts of the whites to the extent that news of her death was joyously received as a slave, Cuffee, was handsomely rewarded when he declared that he had killed her. This allegation was entirely false as Nanny outlived the First Maroon War, and subsequently received 500 acres of land from the British for herself and her people. In 1977, she was proclaimed a Jamaican National Hero, being the only woman thus honored. Samuel Sharp or Daddy Sharpe as he was affectionately called saw the injustices of slavery and was appalled by it. Born in 1780, Sam Sharpe was the slave of an English lawyer. Sharpe is considered one of the forerunners to the labor movement as he fought for the rights of fellow workers. He devised a plan of passive resistance in order to force the hands of the planters. Sharpe and his congregation decided that as of Christmas day, 1831, they would

cease to work as slaves. The Christmas Rebellion, as it was known as, started in St James, Jamaica and spread across the entire island. Estate Great Houses were burnt, crops destroyed and a number of whites were killed. The retribution that followed, was swift, up to 500 slaves were executed after trial. Sam Sharpe named as the instigator, was eventually captured and hung at the Parade in Montego Bay, now renamed Sam Sharpe Square. The Christmas Rebellion of 1831, was a key event in the fight for the abolishment of slavery. On August 1, 1938 the Apprenticeship System ended. Full freedom was granted to the slaves. Sam Sharpe was declared a National Hero in 1975. He appears on the $50 note.

Wilmot Perkins is dead

VETERAN journalist Wilmot Motty Perkins died peacefully at his home in Jamaica on Friday February 10th. Perkins, who had been ailing for a short while, hosted his own talk show Perkins On Line since April 2002. Regarded as one of Jamaicas most incisive journalists, Perkins started his career in journalism as a reporter at The Gleaner. He started his radio career hosting Whats your Grouse on RJR in 1960. A few years later he took a short break from the

Contributor he Jamaica music landscape has changed dramatically for the better or for the worse; only time will tell. With the advent of computer, the music landscape has revolutionised with more emphasis being place on beats. Songs are adjudged to be bad based on the rhythm that it is on. Less emphasis is placed on lyrical content. The beat is the driving force behind a song. Forgive me for being mature but whilst we have to cater for the young market there has to be BALANCE. Here is a question Which comes first, the chicken or the eggs? Each one teaches one. I am saying this to say that newness is good but with proper guidance it can be BETTER. Our music is our GOLD and we need to preserve it; for our children and grandchildren. We need timeless music. We have too many flavours of the month or the season. It is therefore the duty of the power houses that introduce the music over the air waves to be aware that children are listening. Some children dont have proper guidance and are influenced greatly by music. Music can be addictive and persuasive. It has been proven that children learn faster when lesson is put to music. We need to be SINCERE in our handling of music. With power comes responsibility. I am appealing to all players in the industry; singers, DJs, musicians, producers, disc jocks, broadcasters, journalists let us try and outdo the other music genres in 2012. It was at secondary school where Waynes thoughtfulness and philosophical nature led to the acquisition of the nickname Wonder; young Wayne sang at school, at home, at church and for his friends and wherever he sang, he was encouraged to pursue his craft professionally. The first producer Wayne recorded for was the legendary creator of dub, the late King Tubby. Wayne voiced three original songs for Tubby, but the one that caught the publics attention was his cover version of British heartthrob Rick Astleys Never Gonna Give You Up. Wayne linked up with producer Lloyd Dennis voicing the hit Its Over Now on the popular Cover Me rhythm (titled after the hit by Ninja Man and Tinga Stewart) for Dennis Pickout label. That was actually the first song that starts to play, like I could go to the dance and look forward to hearing it, Wayne recalls, so my inspira-

Bonafide Love proved to be a huge success as well, remaining a heavily requested tune even today. Wayne and Dave Kelly continued their successful musical relationship when Kelly founded his own Madhouse and Xtra Large labels. Wayne recorded many hits for Madhouse spanning the mid to late 90s, including Joyride, Bashment Gal, and Keep Them Coming. Wayne introduced an extra dimension with Let Your Conscience Set You Free recorded in combination with his alter ego, deejay Surprize. I have a lot of tracks on the road like Wayne Wonder featuring Surprize. Really, Im the deejay as well as the singer, that is the surprise. My creative juices get crazy on me so I apply them in different ways. Wayne launched his own record label Singso in 2000 and has released singles by several artists. In 2002, Wayne earned the first #1 hit of his career pledging a lifetime of devotion on the sweetly romantic hit No Letting Go. Steve Lenky Marsden, the multitalented musician and producer, whose hypnotic Diwali rhythm track supports Waynes sweet serenading on No Letting Go is one of the featured producers on the album, along with heavy hitters Tony Kelly and Sly Dunbar. Wayne wrote or co-wrote all of the songs on No Holding Back and the album featured the same superlative vocal and songwriting stan-

Wonders career exploded globally in 2003 when his album No Holding Back and the single No Letting Go were released on the major label, Atlantic Records. The smooth single dominated Urban and Pop radio (reaching #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 Pop chart) in America and the album, No Holding Back received a Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album, a MOBO Award in the UK, three BMI Urban awards, and a live performance on NBC Televisions Saturday Night Live. The follow-up single and video Bounce Along reached #12 on the UK pop charts. His inspired version of Hold Me Now (originally recorded by the Thompson Twins) appeared on the 2004s successful 50 First Dates (starring Adam Sandler / Drew Barrymore) movie soundtrack and was produced by No Doubts Tony Kanal with a video directed by Gil Green for Madonnas Maverick Records label. Wayne also anchored the hit track Anything Goes (w/ CNN: Capone & N.O.R.E and Lexxus) for the Def Jamaica compilation which received a Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album. I just want to do good songs, Wayne concludes. Im keeping the mainstream recognition in mind but adding my creative flow to it because I want people to know that Wayne Wonder is not limited.

New York-based reggae artist Leighton is turning heads and creating a stir with the release of his latest single, Life, a 2012 remake of an old pop favorite from the 1980s. Life is an adaptation of a haunting and hypnotic love song that was a number one smash single on both sides of the Atlantic. It was written by the Bee Gees for Barbara Streisands Grammy winning album Guilty. Leighton brought the song back to life with his lush, velvety vocals skillfully guided by the direction of producer Nikimo Palache and ably assisted by veteran reggae recorder Ed Robinson. With Great Respect And Love Ask Mother...

And with all my heart, I welcome you to another day to challenge yourself to grow spiritually, mentally and physically. Get off your comfortzone-couch! Ask Mother The question is: How can I stop the heavy bleeding during menses? and the bleeding in between when the cycle is not supposed to come? If the issue of blood is your long-standing issue, please call me for indebt guidance as everyones situation is different and extensive details cannot be totally covered in one article. The most common symptoms: changing sanitary pad on an hourly basis, using double sanitary protection, bleeding in between periods, scanty or irregular menstrual cycle, large blood clots and mucus, and severe cramping in lower abdomen before and during menstrual period can leave one self-conscious and emotionally frustrated. There are so many causes to consider regarding the issue of blood since one must make immediate, permanent, oftentimes radical, lifestyle and dietary changes. Medicinal side effects, steroids, blood thinners, anti-inflammatories and anticoagulants may significantly contribute to heavy menstrual periods. Other contributing factors include: fibroids, cysts, polyps, endometriosis, lack of ovulation (the ovaries failing to produce and release eggs), pelvic inflammatory disease, blocked tubes, scar tissue, hormone regulators (aka birth control medication), using a intrauterine device (IUD birth control), miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy. Thyroid problems, liver congestion, anorexia, re-

cent weight loss or weight gain, over-exercising or lack of. Overuse of laxatives, purgatives, incorrect fasting, iron deficiency anemia, occupational and personal stress, harboring deep-rooted subconscious psychological-emotional disturbances (miscarriage, barrenness, rape, incense, abortion), just to name a few more. Some more causes: consumption of animal products, not limited to dairy, all animal meats, especially from the pig, ox, cow, chicken; scavengers like shrimp, lobster, catfish; fast food consumption (animals raised on steroids, inorganic food, organs and eroded body parts), alcohol, sugar, salt, not enough water (or too much). Yes, genetics and age have a role in this; however, changing lifestyle and diet will greatly modify and eliminate the issue of blood. Natural remedies offer women alternatives in obtaining a normal monthly cycle and overall well-being. Modify and gradually eliminate the causes. Yarrow, nettle/or alfalfa, damiana, shepherds purse (1/2-ounce each to make 2-quarts); prepare and sip one tea cup early am and late pm during cycle to treat heavy menstrual bleeding and provide iron and minerals needed during the cycle. Vitex berries, damiana and red raspberry leaf (1/2-ounce each to make 2-quarts); prepare and sip 1-cup prior to bed, will greatly assist young daughters with moderate hormonal imbalance. balances. Pelvic/abdominal massages: combine any of these with extra virgin olive oil or almond oil and add a pinch of cayenne: lavender, jasmine, sandalwood, sage or rose oil(s). Prior to bed: after deep, abdominal-thrust breathing (30 seconds), massage the pelvic/womb and relax; this penetrates through the muscles to restore and rejuvenate down into micro-cosmic subliminal cellular levels. Therapeutic Touch (Reiki), Taiji Chuan, Meditation, hatha yoga are for physical, spiritual restoration and maintenance. These are just a few of the many natural remedies for women with the issue of blood. May you continue to allow The Most High God to grace and guide your journey. Blessings & Love, Rev. Senior GRA official skips country amidst $4M bribery probe

A senior official of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) has reportedly resigned amidst investigations into the unauthorized release of a container and the demand of bribes. GRA officials yesterday confirmed that Ray Sukhnandan, Senior Manager of Internal Affairs and Intelligence, an arm of the GRA, reportedly handed in his resignation, via his brother. It is believed that he fled the country after a complaint was made that several officers of the department demanded a $4M bribe from a businessman for the release of the container. The container was said to contain general merchandise. Kaieteur News understands that the businessman may have taped the officers asking for monies, in return

for the release of the container. Four other officers from the Internal Affairs Department, including one stationed at a city wharf, are also said to be involved and under probe. It was explained that under GRA systems, containers entering the country are randomly checked and assessed. In cases of businesses that may have questionable declaration history, these containers are flagged. A GRA official said that officers may have attempted to bypass this flagging by promising to release the container for a fee.

You cannot turn on the TV or read a newspaper without seeing an advertisement from a law firm specializing in bankruptcy. There are so many people filing for bankruptcy that the cost has come down significantly...well almost. These ads indicate that you can start your bankruptcy for as little as $600 in some cases. What they do not tell you up front is that is just the beginning of what it will cost you. Once you pay the initial filing fees, you are locked into the process. If you run out of money, then you either withdraw the bankruptcy filing or pony up some more money. Here are some examples of how much bankruptcy actually costs. First, the cost to begin a bankruptcy is just that, the amount you need to put up to get the initial filing. For some consumers, this initial filing is necessary to stop foreclosure proceedings and wage garnishments. Due to the new bankruptcy statutes, consumer credit counseling is now mandatory. The cost is about $75 each for the pre-filing credit counseling and the pre-discharge financial education course. Regardless of how much money you may have or not have, you must complete this step or your bankruptcy will not be discharged. There are administrative fees that are paid to the trustee as well. The majority of bankruptcies need to be amended once the process gets underway. This is because after pulling additional credit reports additional creditors may surface or debts that are sold off to various collection agencies must be amended to include each new creditor. Each amendment costs $26 and the average number of amendments per case is between 8 and 10. If you begin a chapter 13 case and are unable to meet the payment plan, then your filing changes to a chapter 7 case, again costing you more money. If you have property that is not worth the value of what is owed and seek to keep it that

will cost you $150. This is referred to as compelling abandonment of property. After the bankruptcy is discharged, then you need to begin the credit restoration process. While your debts have been discharged legally, until they are reflected as such on your credit report, you are still considered as liable for them for credit granting and reporting purposes. Even if you take the bankruptcy paperwork into a car dealership, for example, and show them proof that the debts they are seeing on your credit report have been discharged, they will still be unable to give you a car loan. The credit report is the ruling document in all credit matters. For more info visit this link 1-888-807-1892 www.hishermoneytalk.com

One of the main hindrances that keep migrants from becoming United States citizens is the fear of the Citizenship examination. You will notice that I did not say that the hindrance is the examination .It is the fear of the Examination. Many people are so afraid of the examination that they do not do it at all. They are told by all and sundry that the examination is near impossible to pass. Just tell such people that if they could pass it so can you then study and pass it. While you will not pass it if you do not study it is very manageable if you study over a period of time give yourself at least a year. What are you to study for your Citizenship examination?

Talking with and answering questions from the audience, Castro spoke about a number of things: the battles fought by students in Latin America and the rest of the world over their rights; tremendous scientific discoveries and emerging technologies; the risk of shale gas and the fabulous perspectives of nanotechnology. Castro told the audience he reads hundreds of press releases every day; devours all the information he gets; follows closely the situation in Venezuela commemorating on February 4 the 20th anniversary of the military uprising led by Hugo Chavez. He also spoke about the threats hanging over Syria and Iran, while the US and Europe are trying to convince Russia of the ridiculous

The first thing you are to do is log on to the official USCIS website then search for Citizenship Examination. There you will find the sample examination. Then you practice answering the questions there. The questions are multiple choice and the answers are right there on the pages. The tests are essentially the same from year to year but you must always look at the most current guidelines and examples available on the internet. The examination deals with United States basic politics, history, government and peoples. History begins with the landing of the May Flower, continues to the Amerindians and slavery and the abolition of slavery to the present day.

HAVANA, Cuba (ACN) The leader of the Cuban Revolution and former president of Cuba, Fidel Castro, published his memoirs, a two-volume book titled Fidel Castro Ruz: Guerrillero del Tiempo (Fidel Castro Ruz: Guerrilla of Time). The book is a compilation, in nearly one thousand pages, of conversations between Castro and writer and journalist Katiuska Blanco. It opens with the Cuban leaders memories of his childhood and closes in December 1958, just before the triumph of the Revolution. The book is a published by the Casa Editora Abril Cuban publishing house and the Federico Engels printers, with photos and drawings

idea that the antimissile shield was established to protect that country from the threats of Iran and North Korea. Writer Graziella Pogolotti, president of the Alejo Carpentier Foundation, started the round of questions and told Castro that he should continue writing about his experiences as a fighter and his meetings with world personalities. Castro said he is willing to do everything possible to pass on whatever he remembers well, and added: Im aware of the importance of writing all of this to pass it on, so that it can be useful. In closing the meeting, Castro regretted that time had run out and remarked, I feel very happy, but I like to collaborate with the doctors. And, just for the record, I dont do it as an act of courage but as an act of intelligence.

In light of this, the Constitution, the bill of rights and separation of powers are always present topics. As too are questions of citizen ship and government. Not only does studying for the examination make you likely to pass; it makes you a better citizen. It helps you understand the importance and value of something so many people take for granted. Certain rights and privileges are reserved for citizens as are certain duties and expectations. Malcolm Rowe is an independent contributor. Contact: mrmrowe78@gmail.com

Annually, Black History Month is either highly overrated or receives little or no acclaim. In fact, some people have lost interest in anything concerning the black race and their unending quest for recognition. I find this stance quite disconcerting but, as natives from the Island of Jamaica, we believe that academic excellence does not equate to the color of our skins but our determination to succeed. There are countless profound quotations made by infamous people akin to the power of ones mind. For example the slogan for the United Negro College Fund, A Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Waste or Malcolm Xs Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today. It is interesting how fascinated we become with the immeasurable human intellect superior to our own. Our sense of inferiority compels us to laud scholastic achievers to the point of idolism. But what makes these brilliant people superior to us? Were they born with high IQs or did they have an insatiable zest for knowledge? We might never know the answer to these puzzling questions, but I do know that for Black History Month 2012, I am proud to highlight some of our great scientific catalysts in this article whose brilliance is remarkable! PROF. LOUIS GRANT, M.D., C.H., M.P.H., DIP BACT., FAPHA, F.C. PATH, F.A.A.N. For Jamaica to regain its former academic status, Minister Ronald Thwaites in his capacity as Minister of Education, needs to revisit the Ministrys modus operandi. The topic of designated Rhodes Scholarships could also be the incentive for students to perform at their highest potential. In fact, since 1904 Jamaica College (JC) has had a rich history of producing Rhodes Scholars who have gone on to lead in various capacities both locally and internationally. To date, there have been 15 Rhodes Scholar recipients that attended JC. Kamille Adair a resident of Greater Portmore, and student of the University of the West Indies; Norman Manley Law School is our Rhodes Scholar-elect for 2012. Her current/recent course of study: Bachelor of Laws (LLB) (2009); Legal Education Certificate (2011). Congratulations Kamille! Education is paramount in nation building, and as our country celebrates 50 years of independence on August 6, we must raise our black green and gold flag with the sole intention to inspire our young with dignity and pride so that they may recognize that Black History Month represents Excellence for Jamaica and all Jamaicans everywhere.

DHAKA, Bangladesh (CMC) A half-century from Shivnarine Chanderpaul was the most notable performance from a West Indian in the Bangladesh Premier League Twenty20 double-header yesterday. The durable West Indies batsman, opening the batting, hit the top score of 59, but he was upstaged by an unbeaten 86 from Nasir Jamshed that carried the Chittagong Kings to a tense, six-wicket victory over the Khulna Royal Bengals at the Sher-eBangla Stadium. In the other match, Dhaka Gladiators, whose line up included Kieron Pollard, cruised to a sevenwicket victory over Sylhet Royals at the same venue. Chanderpaul led the way with five fours and three sixes from 50 balls, as the Bengals, choosing to bat, posted a competitive 171 for three from their allocation of 20 overs. The left-handed Chanderpaul put on 89 for the first wicket with former South Africa batsman Herschelle Gibbs before he fell in the 15th over. Andre Russell joined fellow West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Smith and put on a valuable 52 for the

After Russell provided an early breakthrough for the Bengals, Jamshed put his head down and put on 88 for the second wicket with

The Prince, who is an Olympic ambassador for Team Great Britain, is hoping to challenge Bolt to a fun race if does not interrupt the athletes training schedule. A visit to Bolts University of the West Indies based training facility will be on Prince Harrys itinerary when he visits Jamaica at the beginning of March as the Royal family begin Diamond Jubilee tours of every Commonwealth country.

The 27-year-old Prince is also expected to meet Jamaicas Prime Minister, Portia Simpson Miller, who said in January that she intended to remove the Queen as head of state to turn the country into a republic. According to the Committees chairman Anthony Harford, there is a FIFA date coming up on the 29th. Trinidad and Tobago has an invitation to play a game against Antigua in Antigua. We are in talks with Caribbean Airlines and a couple other sponsors to fund that trip for us, he said. If we can raise that funding, then the senior team will go. But Russell, Smith and the rest of the Bengals bowling failed to make the breakthrough, as Jamshed and Faisal Hossain added 43 unbroken for the fifth wicket to usher the Kings over the finish line with five delivery remaining. In the second match, Pollard proved his worth in the field, running out Bangladesh opener Imrul Kayes for 23, having Shuvgata Hom caught in the deep, and holding a catch to dismiss Naeem Islam, as the Royals were bowled out for 124 in 19.5 overs. Pollard finished with one for 24 from three overs, but he was not required to bat, as the Gladiators reached their target with 10 deliveries remaining. The results meant that the Kings remained unbeaten and moved into second place behind the Barisal Burners on four points, leaving the Royals third on two, the Gladiators fourth on two with an inferior net run rate, and the Royals at the bottom of the six-team table.

the same with the Under-17s, said Harford. Those are not large salaries, those are largely stipends. We are keeping those teams as active as possible and as organised as possible, and as insulated as possible from all that is happening. Asked about the funding of the cash-strapped TTFF by the Ministry of Sport, Harford replied, they are not paying monies directly to the TTFF. The only monies that come to the TTFF marketing are the monies from the sponsors, which I have to account for and which I have done to

Harford has been dealing with the TTFF accounts for nearly a year, but this current saga, which saw the Federations assets seized by 13 members from the 2006 Soca Warriors who are seeking $4.2 million in unpaid bonuses and rewards, has seen more pressure placed on the ex-media presenter.

UN Wants Former Haitian Leader Face Charges For Human Rights Abuses
G E N E VA , Switzerland The United Nations voiced its concern at reports that former Haitian president Jean-Claude Duvalier may not face charges relating to the serious human rights violations that took place during his 15-year rule, while stressing that justice must be ensured for the victims. Serious human rights violations, including torture, rape, and extrajudicial killings have been extensively documented by Haitian and international human rights organizations to have occurred in the country during his reign, stated a spokesperson for the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). Human rights groups have long called for Duvalier to be arrested in relation to rights abuses carried out during his rule. The former president made a surprise return to Haiti in January 2011, after 25 years of exile in France and amidst a political crisis in his country. Soon after Duvaliers return, OHCHR offered Haitian authorities

Incentives: Available land, Subsidized irrigation, Subsidized land preparation, Research and development support, Remission of duties on agricultural vehicles, Remission of duties on agricultral equipment, machinery and products, Income tax relief for approved farmers, Raw material duty concession technical assistance for prosecuting crimes committed from 1971 to 1986 when he was in power. Colville voiced concern about a string of reports quoting Haitian judicial officials as saying that Duvalier may only face charges of financial corruption rather than ones relating to human rights abuses during his time in power. We are extremely disappointed at reports that Mr. Duvalier may not be charged with any human rights crimes, despite numerous complaints by victims to the prosecutor, he stated. It is clear under international law that there is no statute of limitations for such crimes, and the UN human rights office has provided technical assistance and legal advice stressing this point. Colville added that impunity for such serious crimes cannot be allowed to prevail. We urge the relevant authorities to ensure that justice is, belatedly, delivered to the many victims of human rights abuses committed under the government of Mr. Duvalier. There can be no true reconciliation and forgiveness without justice. United States Government has pledged to provide the Ministry of National Security with non-lethal weapons to assist the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) in its efforts to reduce the number of police-related fatalities. The move comes just a week after Minister of National Security Peter Bunting said he would be looking to develop the necessary policy on the use of non-lethal weapons for the security forces. US Ambassador to Jamaica, Pamela Bridgewater, said starting later this year, the US government will provide the ministry with batons, handcuffs, pepper sprays and equipment belts for approximately 6,500 frontline officers attached to the JCF. She said the donations would be made over the course of three years. The ambassador made the announcement during the handing over of some 20 vehicles, 500 ballistic vests and 500 tactical uniforms,

worth about $64 million, for members of the JCF at the Office of the Commissioner of Police, Old Hope Road, St Andrew. Bridgewater said the non-lethal weapons are to assist the JCF in its aim to use less deadly force and equipment in the fight against crime. To accompany this equipment for non-lethal use, the embassy will work with the JCF to provide extensive training on how to use the equipment, and how and when to apply that equipment under the JCFs Application of Force Policy, she stated. In his remarks, Bunting lauded the US government for its assistance and quick response to the need he recently expressed. One of the challenges weve had, and one that were making some head way on, is reducing injuries and fatalities arising out of confrontations or arrests, he remarked. Commissioner of Police Owen Ellington said the JCFs non-lethal training support program has been an initiative of the force for a number of years, but it is hoped that the project will be intensified over the upcoming months.
