Citing within your document

1. When you are ready to cite from a source you have saved in your RefWorks account, make sure that you have the cursor at the point on your page where you want the reference to appear. 2. Click on Write-N-Cite from the taskbar. 3. You can see the references you have saved in your folders by clicking on the view menu and selecting your chosen folder from the drop down list.

4. Select the reference you want to use and then click on Cite to the left of the reference. 5. You will now see the citation in your document it will look something like this {{50 Artis,Michael J. 1991; }} Dont worry about the appearance of the citation as Write-N-cite will change it later. RefWorks can insert page numbers. You will need to add /f and your page number into each citation as you write, e.g. {{50 Artis,Michael J. 1991/f p.23;}} It is a good idea to save your document as you work.

Creating your Bibliography/Reference List from either on or off campus

1. Ensure that Write-N-Cite and the Word document that you are working on are both open. Make sure that you have saved the Word document. 2. From the menu in Write-N-Cite, click on Bibliography. 3. Click on the drop-down Output Style box and select the appropriate referencing style. There are a number of styles available. These include styles preferred by the University - Harvard, APA, ISO and MLA. You should check with your School for clarification as to which style to use.

4. Once you have selected the output style click on Create Bibliography. You will then see the message Please wait while we process the file

5. You will then see the message Your manuscript was processed successfully. No errors were encountered. A new file will now appear with the word Finalbefore your file name. This is the document that you submit. You will see a Reference List in your chosen referencing style, and the curly brackets will have been replaced by round brackets in your text. If you have inserted page numbers using /f these will appear within your in-text citations. 6. It is recommended that you proof-read the final document before submission. You may need to tidy the in-text citations and the Bibliography/Reference List. If an error message appears, try resaving your original document and repeat steps 2-5 again. If you then decide to edit/continue working on your document, do not use the final version, use your original document and then create the bibliography/reference list again as above.
