Kitaab at-Tawheed in Saheeh al-Bukhaaree

Prepared by Aboo Shaybah

The following set of handouts comprise some of the material prepared for a series of evening classes at
Nur-ul-Huda Academy (Toronto) during term 2 of the 2004-2005 school year. The classes covered the last chapter
of Saheeh al-Bukhaaree, that being Kitaab at-Tawheed, which contains narrations that establish many aspects of the
Aqeedah of Ahuls-Sunnah wal-Jamaaah relating to Allaah and His names and attributes.

from Yahyaa ibn Abdullaah as-Sayfee; that he heard Aboo Mabad, the freed slave of ibn Abbaas saying; I heard ibn
Abbaas say, When the Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) sent Muaadh to the people of Yemen
he said to him, Verily, you are going to a nation from the People of the Book, so let the first thing
you call them to be the tawheed of Allaah. If they understand that, tell them that Allaah has
obligated five prayers upon them to be prayed during the day and night. If they pray, then inform
them that Allaah has obligated upon them the giving of Zakaah from their properties, it is to be
taken from the rich and given to the poor. If they agree to that, take (the Zakaah) from them, but
avoid the best and most beloved property of the people.

servants? I replied, Allaah and His Messenger know best. He said, that they worship Him
(Alone) and not associate any partners with Him. Do you know what (the servants) right is upon
Him (Allaah)? I replied, Allaah and His Messenger know best. He said, that He not punish
them (if they do so).

me; from his father; from Aboo Saeed al-Khudree that a person heard another person reciting, Say: He is
Allaah the One
1
and repeating it over and over. The next morning the man went to the Prophet
(sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) and informed him about that, as if he considered that the recitation
the soorah alone was not enough. The Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) said,
by the One in Whose Hand is my soul, it is equivalent to one third of the Quraan.
Ismaaeel ibn Jafar added to this; from Maalik ibn Abdur-Rahmaan; from his father; from Aboo Saeed (saying); my
brother Qataadah bin Numaan informed me; from the Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam).

(sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) sent a man amongst a military expedition and he used to lead his
companions in prayer and concluded his recitation with Say: He is Allaah the One
2
. When they
returned (from the battle), they mentioned this to the Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) who
replied, ask him why he did this. Consequently, they asked him and he replied, because it
(mentions) the description of ar-Rahmaan and I love to recite it (in prayer). The Prophet
(sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) said (to them), Inform him that Allaah Loves him.

Aboo Numaan narrated to us; Hammaad ibn Zayd narrated to us; from Aasim al-Ahwal; from Aboo Uthmaan an-
Nahdee; from Usaamah ibn Zayd who said: We were in the presence of the Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wa
sallam) when there came to him a messenger from one of his daughters asking him to visit her
son who was in the pangs of death. The Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) said to him,
Return and inform her that to Allaah belongs what He takes and what He gives. Everything has
an appointed time determined by Him, so enjoin her to be patient and to hope for Allaahs
reward. She sent the messenger again this time, swearing that he should come to her. The
Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam), along with Sad ibn Ubaadah and Muaadh ibn Jabal,
stood (and went to her). The child was brought to him, and the sound of his breathing was
ragged as if it were in a dry water-skin. Upon seeing this the Prophets eyes filled with tears.
Sad asked him, What is this O Messenger of Allaah? He replied, This is mercy which Allaah
places in the hearts of His servants. Indeed Allaah shows mercy only to his merciful servants.

people). They claim that He has a son, yet despite this He grants them health and sustenance.
