Abundance Of Fish And Crabs
During Floods
Votua and Natutu villages, on
the outskirts of Ba Town were
fooded with crabs and fsh
brought in by recent foodwaters
over the past two weeks.
Votua villager Josateki Caucau
said when the food receded
they were surprised to see an
abundance of crabs, mana and
kuka the food waters brought in.
He said it was like a blessing in
disguise for the villagers.
"Since our crops were damaged
we've been fooded with crabs,
mana and kuka," he said.
Most of the villagers sold them
in bundles at $50 each.
"We then bought groceries and
kept the rest for the family," Mr
Caucau added.
He said it was like mana from
heaven because the villagers did
not expect the foodwaters to
bring in the crabs.
Natutu villager, Vinau Volavola
said they had to scramble to save
household items as the water
level rose last week.
"We were caught by surprise to
see fsh in the rooms and outside
brought in by the food along
with freshwater eels. I could see
kuka, mana and crabs also trying
to escape the food."
He said they could not sell the
crabs because there was no
transport. "It was like Christmas
for us as we cooked and made
real good use of the crabs," he
said.
Aviation Staff Living Cheap
AN audit of the Civil Aviation Authority of
Fiji Islands eight years ago revealed that the
company's redundant workers who were
re-employed by Airports Fiji Limited were
still occupying CAAFI quarters.
The audit found that the redundant
workers were paying $40 per fortnight
instead of being charged commercial
rates.
This was revealed in the Public
Accounts Committee's report on the
Auditor General's report on the audit
of CAAFI's fnances in 2004. The
committee said the audit revealed that
the consolidated fnancial statements of
CAAFI and its subsidiary Air Terminal
Services for 2003 and 2004 were issued
a qualifed audit opinion.
It said the asset of CAAFI had not
been revalued in accordance with the
Fiji Accounting Standard and the last
revaluation of the authority's property,
plant and equipment was conducted in
1993.
Also, the committee said the land lease
rental that was due from AFL amounted
to $6,325,261 as at December 31, 2004
and was an accumulation since 1999.
The audit also found that the valuation
of fxed assets that was due in 1998
was not carried out because of the
restructure of the authority and the
subsequent transfer of assets to AFL.
It found that the asset values in the
fnancial statements only refected the
1993 valuation.
The committee said the valuation of the
airport land carried out in January 2004
had not been refected in the fnancial
statements.
Thousands Awarded
Scholarships
More than a thousand scholarships
have been awarded to tertiary students
this year.
While the Public Service Commission
is still informing respective students
of their awards Permanent Secretary
Parmesh Chand says only 18 per cent
of the applicants were successful.
We received in access of 7,800
applications and out of that we have
given 1,471 students various forms of
assistance ranging from scholarships
as well as assistance with loans.
Chand has reiterated that should the
awardees fail to produce results, they
will be at risk of losing the scholarships.
The PSC Local/Overseas, Multi Ethnic
Affairs, I-taukei and PSC Loan Scheme
are some of the awards under the PSC
Scholarship scheme.
Intercontinental Fiji Wins Awards
For Flawless Service
INTERCONTINENTAL Fiji has

The awards are based on frst-hand
reviews from travellers around the
world.
The hotel is the only resort to represent
Fiji in the South Pacifc Luxury Hotels
category and is ranked ninth globally
in the Relaxation Spa Hotels in the
South Pacifc category.
The award recognizes the resort's
commitment to impeccable service
through its many facilities including

The listing has prompted the resort to
offer special celebratory packages.
General Manager Scott Williams said
such a high ranking was an accolade to
cherish.
"To receive any award is always great,
but to be rated so highly by our guests
is absolutely fantastic," he said.
He promised the resort would work
hard to maintain its reputation. The
resort is owned by The Fiji National

Fiji Fruits For Japan
Three Japanese companies have
identifed Fiji to be their major supplier
of tropical fruits.
Fijis Ambassador to Japan, Isikeli
Mataitoga, confrmed that three
companies from Okinawa have shown
interest at investing in farms around
Fiji.
Agrooga Japan Ltd, Mahae Producers
Ltd and Limonde Noni Ltd would be
the predominant supplier of tropical
fruits and vegetables back to their
respective wholesale businesses in
Okinawa.
Mr Mataitoga confrmed from
Tokyo that a consultant for the three
companies from Okinawa would be in
Fiji this week
He will have meetings with
representatives from Agriculture,
Fisheries, iTaukei Land Trust Board and
Investment Fiji Mr Mataitoga said.
After his meetings in Suva, the
consultant would then visit Vanua Levu
for further meetings in the weekend
before returning to Japan.
These companies want to set up their
own farms in Fiji to supply their
Japanese markets.
They would also contract independent
farmers in Fiji to supplement what they
may need, using the special agricultural
technology used in Japan.
According to Mr Mataitoga, Agrooga
Japan Ltd is a co-operative company
of many farmers and they have been
importing some fruits from Fiji for
about ten years now.
But recently, they have had some
diffculties with getting quality produce
from Fiji.
He said by setting up in Fiji, they hoped
to be actually farming using Japanese
technology and farm management
skills and to have individual farmers.
These selected farmers are contracted
to them on the basis of their farming
technique and farming management
practices.
One of the products they want to
introduce is to grow apple mango in
the Okinawa Greenhouse, which is
typhoon resistant.
In an earlier interview, Mr Mataitoga
said the group of companies was
already discussing supply contracts,
with some of the major importers from
Hokkaido.
The set up farms, as suppliers of
tropical fruits and vegetables to
Okinawa would be an economic boost
to the people involved.
It will also create job opportunities for
the local people.

PM Inspects Damage And
Rehabilitation Works
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama
visited Ratu Ilaisa Memorial School
in Sigatoka to assess frsthand the
problems encountered by students
following recent fooding in most parts
of the western division.
The head of government is touring the
western division to assess damages
and rehabilitation work following the
recent fooding.
The Western Divisional Education
Offcer Mr Lekima Vorevore said his
offce had to put in place contingency
measures to ensure minimal disruptions
to students in the area and to ensure
that the farming community of Semo
is able to continuing transporting
agricultural produce for the Sigatoka
market and tourism hotels in the coral
coast area.
"We acknowledge and appreciate
the visit by the Prime Minister and
we hope that the situation would be
improved. The contingencies put in
place would ensure that students do
attend classes and people are able
to transport agricultural produce to
markets, Vorevore said.
"We are thankful that the Prime
Minister has visited us and witnessed at
frst hand our challenges and we hope
that our situation will be improved
soon, Mr Vorevore said.
Prime Minister Bainimarama continued
his tour which includes inspecting
critical infrastructure damaged by
the recent fooding. He has instructed
western division offcials to prepare
brief outlines of problems and to
present proposed solutions.
Local Fijian Wins Visa Case
THE Federal Magistrates Court has
ruled against earlier orders by the
Refugee Review Tribunal allowing a
Fijian woman and her children to stay
in Australia under a protection visa.
The Canberra court also ruled that
the tribunal erred when it denied
the woman, whose name has been
suppressed, a protection visa after
considering the woman's case as if she
was an "ordinary Fijian".
The media reported that the court was told
the woman was a member of the Soqosoqo
Duavata ni Lewenivanua (SDL) party and
she had been politically active both in Fiji
and Australia where she lived with her
children in a NSW town.
"Then Minister for Immigration Chris
Evans denied her a protection visa in
April 2010, despite having lost her job
after being seen on Fijian television
supporting Mr Qarase during a court
appearance and being warned by the
military authorities not to associate
with the former Prime Minister," the
media reported.
"When she appealed the minister's
decision to the Refugee Review
Tribunal, advice from Department of
Foreign Affairs and Trade to the review
body said the regime was known
to have engaged in threatening and
intimidatory conduct," it reported.
"But the department said it believed
the targeting of the families of former
ministers was unlikely. Foreign Affairs
and Trade advised that ordinary Fijians
taking part in protest activities outside
of Fiji could potentially be subject to
harm upon returning to the country,
although generally only high profle
activists were targeted," it stated.
But Federal Magistrate Warwick
Neville found that the tribunal "erred
badly" in assessing the woman as an
ordinary citizen.
"The reality is, the applicant cannot
be properly described as an 'ordinary
Fijian," Mr Neville wrote in his
judgment. He also directed the federal
government to pay the woman's legal
costs.
Flood-Swamped Homes Will Be
Fumigated
Health authorities are on high alert and
will fumigate all homes before families
living in evacuation centres return to
their homes.
Ministry of Health spokesman Peni
Namotu has advised families on health
safety precautions they conduct at their
properties.
We are advising people in evacuation
centres that we will be moving from
house to house for this exercise and this
is to just prevent any potential outbreak
in these areas, Mr Namotu said.
\Another area of concern for health
authorities is the availability of damaged
processed foods in the market.
People are vulnerable at this stage in
food-hit areas and the availability of
foods in the markets signals a concern
for us.
Despite repeated warnings to
supermarkets and shops we have
imposed a fne of $150,000 and have
further confscated damaged frozen
foods.
We hope to reiterate again our
warnings to the public who will be
inclined to purchase these damaged
frozen foods and warn them the health
hazards it poses.
As for the environment health
authorities are also handing out water
purifcation tablets at settlements and
communities.

Award Winning Sand Sculptures
The creative magic of sand sculptors
will take a breathtakingly transformed
resort beachfront into the living room
of 80 million Discovery Channel
viewers in the US and Europe.
The attention-grabbing design of
a traditional Fijian setting at the
Outrigger on the Lagoon shoreline was
carved by a group of American sand
sculptors, whose work is followed
by Sand Masters, a reality television
series that premiered last year on the
Travel Channel.
The group-led by award winning
sculptor Rusty Croft-was at the resort
last week to celebrate Outrigger Hotels
and Resorts 65th anniversary.
Resort general manager Peter Hopgood
said the event provided a wonderful
opportunity to market Fiji overseas,
hence the invitation to internationally
acclaimed Sand Masters.
He said the sculptors were known
to unearth the ultimate inspiration
for each work of art by immersing
themselves in local cultures, customs
and adventures.
"It would be remiss of me if I didn't
acknowledge the whole Sand Masters
team as they persisted all week with
the inclement weather," he said.
Mr Croft's business partner is his
longtime friend Kirk Rademaker. The
group also included sculptors Matt
Long, Andy Gertler, Sue McGrew and
Morgan Rudluff.
Mr Hopgood said Outrigger Hotels
was a family-owned company that
placed a great deal of emphasis on
family values.
"These values are also an integral part
of the Fijian culture. Therefore, it was a
match made in heaven when Outrigger
came to Fiji in the year 2000 and in
conjunction with the resort owner, Mr
Geoff Shaw, established this beautiful
resort," he said.
Outrigger Hotels and Resorts was
founded in 1947 when Roy and Estelle
Kelley opened their frst hotel. From
the 50 room Islander Hotel on Waikiki
Beach, the company has grown into a
large enterprise. Outrigger Enterprises
now manages over 11,200 rooms in
eight different countries.

Families Go Home Without Food
TWELVE families that sheltered at
the Lautoka Girmit Centre are in need
of food ration after returning to their
homes.
Speaking on behalf of the families,
Akuila Saukuru claimed the families
did not receive food ration from
the government after leaving the
evacuation centre.
He said those affected families had lost
a lot during the food and they needed
food.
"Most of these families had their farms
destroyed during the food and they
desperately need food ration," Mr
Saukuru said.
"We have requested the Lautoka
district offcer for the food ration but
we haven't received any to take to our
respective houses."
Lautoka DO Ruth Atu said food
rations had been distributed to affected
residents early this week.
"All those residing at the Girmit Centre
have been given food ration for one
week and they are supposed to budget
these ration amongst them," Mrs Atu
said.
"Donations and food rations have also
been distributed to other affected areas
in Lautoka and residents are urged to
use the ration wisely," she said.
"There are also religious bodies and
non-government organisations (NGOs)
that are distributing food rations and
donations to these affected areas."
Naviago resident Mere Yacalevu, 55,
said she returned home without food
ration.
"I was told that we will be taking some
food home but nothing materialized so
we have to leave the centre without any
food," she said.
"Now, I have to look for food once we
arrive home."
Mr Saukuru said the 46 families at the
Girmit Centre were expected to vacate
the evacuation centre.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister
Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama
made a surprise visit to some parts of
the food-affected areas in the Western
Division.
Commissioner Western Commander
Joeli Cawaki said the objective of the
visit was for the Prime Minister to be
updated on the latest developments and
rehabilitation programs for the affected
residents.
A total of 848 residents in the west are
now sheltering at various evacuation
centres in the Western Division.

New Zealand Law Society
Censors Fijian DPP
The New Zealand Law Society
(NZLS) has refused to allow the
Fijian Director of Public Prosecutions
(DPP) to advertise legal positions in
its magazine, Law Talk.
An email to the Offce of the DPP, said
The New Zealand Law Society Board
has decided unanimously that the
NZLS will not accept advertisements
for legal positions in Fiji under the
current interim military regime.
The Director of Public Prosecutions,
Mr Christopher Pryde, said it was
unfortunate that the NZLS was
involving itself in politics and
preventing New Zealand lawyers from
hearing about job vacancies in Fiji.
He said: It is unfortunate that New
Zealand lawyers are being denied the
opportunity to decide for themselves
whether they wish to take up legal
positions in Fiji. By refusing to allow
us the right to advertise, the NZLS
is effectively censoring what New
Zealand lawyers know about Fiji."
The Offce of the Director of Public
Prosecutions in an independent offce
and the Director of Public Prosecutions
has the sole responsibility for criminal
prosecutions in Fiji. This is without
recourse to any Government minister,
including the Attorney-General. The
Offce in that regard is non-political.
Mr Pryde said he remains concerned
that the NZLS continues to have
an inaccurate picture of the Fijian
situation, in particular of the judiciary
and the courts. "People charged with
offences by the Police need to be
prosecuted through the courts. What
shall we do with people charged with
rape or robbery or murder? Send them
to New Zealand? Mr Pryde said.
My invitation to the NZLS still stands.
They are welcome to visit Fiji and meet
and talk to anyone without restriction
so that they can obtain for themselves
a frst-hand appraisal of things in Fiji.
In the meantime, we would appreciate
the NZLS allowing lawyers to decide
things for themselves and allow us the
right to advertise, he said.

Parliamentary Privilege Like
Powers Will Not Be Abused-AG
Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-
Khaiyum stressed that the
parliamentary privilege like powers
given to the Prime Minister and
government ministers under the State
Proceedings Amendment Decree will
not be abused.
While reacting to comments made by
Fiji Labour Party Leader, Mahendra
Chaudhry, the Attorney General
said the decree does not mean that
government ministers will go around
and start defaming everybody.
Sayed-Khaiyum said that the amendment
is to ensure that the ministers are able to
publicize information through evidence
received and also allows the media to
run the information without fear of legal
action.
Mahendra Chaudhry had told Radio
NZ that the amendment decree is
ridiculous as it only gives legal
protection to the government ministers
to make any public statements.
Chaudhry then went on to say that the
decree is making the country like a
banana republic.
However Sayed-Khaiyum said that
the fact that Chaudhry can make these
comments shows that people can make
comments about the government.
He also said that it is sad that Chaudhry
is misleading people overseas and
saying that Fiji is like a banana republic.
Survey Areas Carefully And Leave
"No Stones Unturned"
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama
has instructed government offcials in
the west to carefully survey affected
areas to ensure no one is missed out.
Touring affected areas caused by the
recent fooding in the division, the
Prime Minister called on offcials
to ensure that all those affected
were incorporated in rehabilitation
assessments.
"We must make sure that all affected
communities are surveyed properly and
damages assessed in accurate details.
Also ensure that those communities
in isolated areas are assessed and
their needs considered," said PM, Mr
Bainimarama said.
"But those of us who are responsible
for our areas of work should continue
to bring normalcy to the lives of people.
During a briefng at the offce of the
Commissioner Western, the head of
government has informed offcers on
the ground to do a thorough survey to
ensure that no one takes advantage of
assistance. This includes instructions to
both the Ministry of Lands and the Fiji
National Provident Fund to thoroughly
screen applicants for the assistance
provided.
The Prime Minister has also stressed to
offcials to maintain a sense of urgency
in their assessments and rehabilitation
works.

Students Unite In The Face Of Adversity
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama
witnessed, the unity shared amongst
students from different ethnic
backgrounds and communities in their
determination to continue with their
education.
Students in the western division whose
schools were affected from the recent
fooding have all converged under one
roof approach as part of contingency
measures implemented by Government
to minimize any disruptions to their
education.
The head of government highlighted to
western offcials the resilience of these
students to withstand the devastation
of the recent fooding and to put aside
any ethnic or racial affliations.
Welfare Recipient Seeks Explanation
A 54-YEAR-old woman has asked for
an explanation from the Department
of Social Welfare on why she stopped
receiving her monthly allowance and
food voucher last week.
Vidiya Wati of Vunimoli outside Labasa
Town said she was not informed by the
offcers that she was no longer a social
welfare recipient until she visited them
last Friday.
"When I visited them, they told me to hand
in my card and in return, they gave me a
note saying that I was terminated from their
allowance scheme," Ms Wati said.
"My husband died in 1993 and now
I am looking after my sick daughter.
I am also sickly and I can't afford to
support my family because of fnancial
diffculties," she said.
"We don't even have a home to
ourselves and the owner of the house
we are staying in has asked us to look
elsewhere for shelter," she added.
Ms Wati said the assistance from the
department was the only source of
income for her and her daughter.
In response, permanent secretary for
Social Welfare, Women and Poverty
Alleviation Govind Sami said Ms Wati
was assisted through the Care and
Protection Program.
"When her allowance was terminated,
she was well advised that she could re-
appeal through the Appeals Panel but
not through the media," Mr Sami said.
"The matter will be dealt by the Appeals
Panel provided she has approached the
panel," he told the media.
Mr Sami said the ministry only paid
Family Assistance Allowance (FA) to
elderly over 65 years, chronically ill
and permanently disabled persons.
Through the adversity of the foods
these children are united, different
schools and children from different
ethnic communities are being relocated
to the same schools speaks volume of
our Peoples Charter policies and the
direction the government is taking the
country, a united Fiji for all citizens,
the Prime Minister Bainimarama said
following an entertainment by students
of Drasa Primary School.
I believe this is frst time children
from multi cultural back grounds are
united as one; this is a frst for Fiji
and possibly anywhere in the world,
Prime Minister Bainimarama said of
the relocation.
In Ba, students of Votua Catholic
School with a roll of 165 have been
split into two and relocated to two
different schools with their teachers.
The two schools are Khalsa Primary
and Khania Primary. Ba Muslim
School and Nukuloa School have
also been also used for relocation for
students in the district of Ba.
Schools visited by the Prime Minister
included Vitogo District and Drasa
Primary School in Lautoka, Votua
Catholic and Ba Muslim School in Ba.
The Prime Minister expressed his
gratitude to the quick response taken by
the Ministry of Education, especially
the Western Education Offce in
relocating students from schools that
were closed due the foods.
Principal Education Offcer, Kamlesh
Chand said the approval of the
relocation by the Prime Minister was
encouraging and shows that Fijis
education system was fexible and
people-focused.
The new arrangement would stay
for schools in the Western Division
affected by the recent foods.
He reminded all children to remain
focused on their education through this
diffcult time.
Meanwhile, during his visits to Vitogo
District and Drasa Primary School, the
Prime Minister handed over sandals to
the students.
The students thanked the PM for his
generosity in coming to their aid,
saying that it would greatly assist in
their education.

them in rehabilitation.
Pizza King & Wishbone director Mr
Ravindra Nath said that the company

and assisting other organisations such
as Red Cross, Fiji Society for the Blind

Who Needs NZ?
Fijian legal system has plenty of good options, says Pryde
The Fijian legal system will continue
to function even without New Zealand
lawyers, Director of Public Prosecutions
Christopher Pryde has said.
Mr Pryde made the comment in
response to the New Zealand Law
Societys refusal to publish an
advertisement for vacancies in the
Director of Public Prosecutions offce.
We do not need New Zealand lawyers
to function. We are doing a very good
job as things are. That is not the point,
Mr Pryde said.
We want to expand the pool of
potential candidates to ensure we get
the best candidates for the positions
available. We want the best qualifed
and capable people to work in Fiji. It
does not matter where they come from.
They could come from Mars and I
would consider them if they had the
right qualifcations and, importantly,
the right attitude.
By this, I mean a person who is
prepared to simply concentrate on the
job at hand in a professional manner
and not be involved in politics.
The NZ Law Society board, in an
email sent to the Director of Public
Prosecutions offce, said they have
decided unanimously that they would
not accept advertisements for legal
positions in Fiji under the current
interim military regime.
Mr Pryde said many members of
New Zealand Law Society did not
support the boards decision to stop the
advertising in its magazine Law Talk.
It is highhanded of the NZLS board to
make decisions such as this on behalf
of members of the NZLS.
Many members of the NZLS that
I have spoken to are angry with the
unilateral manner in which the NZLS
hierarchy made this decision without
any consultations with its members.
It might have been different if there
had been consultations with members
of the NZLS and it might have been
different if they had come to a decision
by looking carefully at the facts. They
did neither of these things, Mr Pryde
said.
The advertisement that NZLS refused
to publish has already been published
in Sri Lanka and Hong Kong, and the
Mr Prydes offce has already received
a number of positive response.
This is not the frst time vacancies
have been advertised overseas and it
has been successful with many people
from New Zealand, Australia, Sri
Lanka, and Hong Kong among others,
coming to Fiji to take up positions
in the Attorney-Generals offce, the
judiciary, and the offce of the DPP.
Mr Pryde said he was interested in
hiring the best people for the job and
their nationality did not matter. The NZ
Law Society, he said, was not only being
unfair to Fiji by restricting the pool of
potential candidates for positions but
it was being unfair to people in New
Zealand who wanted to hear about
opportunities for employment.
The legal offcers of the offce of
the Director of Public Prosecutions
are highly trained and professional
men and women who work extremely
long hours. They are non-political
and extremely professional and hard
working. The decision to advertise
overseas is not a refection on them,
or candidates in Fiji. It is simply an
attempt to encourage the best from the
region to apply, along with locals, for
available positions, Mr Pryde said.
Company Helps Out
Flood Affected Staff
Fourteen employees who work for Reddy
Group have not been forgotten.
The company has set aside $5000 to help
its 14 employees who were affected by
the foods.
An assessment concerning staff members
who were affected by the foods was
carried out by hotel managers who visited
their respective homes personally.
Tanoa Hotel Groups human resource
manager Naveen Lakshmaiya said the
$5000 was approved by the groups
directors.
Mr Lakshmaiya said they have two staff
members living in evacuation centres at
Vitogo and Lovu and they would continue
to provide lunch at the centres.
Reddy Group general manager fnance
and property Giyananand Naidu said the
food was a turbulent period in the lives
of those affected and they would like to
support and help them rebuild their lives.
They will be assisted with food vouchers,
cash and other materials, Mr Naidu said.
This gesture is our way of acknowledging
you all for the services you have tirelessly
provided to the company over the years.
You are all part of the Reddy family and
be rest assured we are always there to help
our people when in need.

TravelManagers have announced their
2012 annual National Conference
would be held in Fiji.
This is the frst time TravelManagers
have taken their conference offshore
and chief executive, Joe Araullo says it
has been a popular decision.
Were in the travel industry so who
doesnt love to travel overseas! It
will be a great place to get everyone
together to celebrate what we know
will be another great year.
The conference will run from
November 9 through to November
11 and Araullo said they expected in
excess of 200 of the personal travel
managers network to attend.
Following the 2011 conference
over 80 per cent of personal travel
managers indicated they would attend
the conference if it was in Fiji.
Were holding it at the Softel Fiji
Resort and Spa which is a superb venue
for large gatherings such as this.
If it is anything like the previous
years conferences there will be a lot of
fun had as well as people coming away
inspired, motivated and informed.
Paresh Pant, regional director Australia
for Tourism Fiji said he was delighted
to hear TravelManagers had decided to
come to Fiji.
The Fiji tourism industry is thrilled
that TravelManagers has selected Fiji
for its 2012 conference. The personal
travel manager business model is hugely
successful in reaching the discerning
consumer. More and more consumers
understand there is real value in having
your own personal travel manager
making this a great niche for Fiji. We
value our partnership immensely with
TravelManagers and its great that they
would get to experience world famous
Fijian warmth and hospitality, he said.
Araullo said the TravelManagers team
had already begun work on the content
of the conference.
We put a great deal of time and energy
into our National Conference as we see it
as another fantastic opportunity to educate
and inform our personal travel managers
and National Partnership Offce team. Its
also a time of celebration and recognition
of what individuals and as a team weve
achieved. Theres no doubt its a highlight
in everyones calendars.
Araullo said more information about
the conference will be announced in
the next few months.

Fiji TV Records $3M Proft
The Fiji TV Group recorded a
consolidated net proft after tax of $3.09
million ended December 31, 2011.
Fiji TV Group chief executive offcer
Tarun Patel said the group had
performed extremely well against the
diffcult business climate both in Fiji
and Papua New Guinea.
They registered an increase of 70 per
cent or $1.27m on the same results in the
previous fnancial year, when the Group
recorded a net proft after tax of $1.82m.
The Group registered total operating
revenue of $18.65m compared to
$14.34m in 2010, an increase of 30 per
cent of $4.3m.
Mr Patel said both companies in the
Group recorded profts for the period
under review and had surpassed last
years comparative results.
Media Niugini Limited operating as
EMTV in PNG recorded an increase of
35 per cent in total operating revenue
from $6.42m in 2010 to $8.68 m in the
current fnancial year. Media Niugini
continues to perform extremely well
despite infationary pressures on costs
and had recorded a net proft after tax
of $2.04m for the period under review.
The holding company Fiji TV registered
a net proft after tax of $1.06m for the
six months ended December 31, 2011
compared to $327,908 in 2010, an
increase of 222 per cent. Fiji TV also
recorded an increase of 35 per cent
or $2.68 m in total operating revenue
from $7.61m in 2010 to $10.3m in the
current fnancial year.
Mr Patel said the Rugby World Cup
2011 held in New Zealand contributed
signifcantly to the groups and
particularly the holding companys
results for the frst half of the fnancial
year. He said the World Cup led to
increase in advertising revenue for Fiji
One and subscription revenue for Sky
Pacifc and Pacifc Island Sales.
Fiji TVs board of directors also declared
the companys frst interim dividend of
$0.007 per share or $721,000 to be paid
out on March 6, 2012.
The outlook for the second half of
the year appears to be diffcult and
challenging given the competitiveness
in the television and advertising market
and devastation caused by recent
natural disasters.
The company remains optimistic
despite the challenging and diffcult
economic environment it operates in.
Westpac Decreases
Rate
WESTPAC Fiji announced a reduction
to its Premium Option Home Loan
fxed interest rates.
Westpac's "Best Choice" rates now
claims to offer Fiji's lowest one-year
fxed home loan rate at 5.70 per cent
annually and two years fxed rate at
5.95 per cent annually.
After the fxed-rate period, customers
will move on to the variable rate, which
is at 6.99 per cent per annum.
"We're delighted to offer these low
rates.
"We've led the way by decreasing our
lending rates over the past year due to
ongoing improved liquidity levels,"
Westpac Fiji's Acting Head of Retail
Banking, Nirmala Nambiar said.
"As one of Fiji's biggest lenders,
Westpac Fiji is committed to remaining
competitive in the mortgage market as
we understand the pressure that interest
rates have on our customers."
Fiji-Bound NZ
Personnel To Seek
Approval
New Zealand defence force personnel
travelling to Fiji on personal business
must request an approval prior to
travelling.
In an interview with 3 News, a defence
force spokesman said this is done because
when they opt to travel to Fiji they would
be risking their personal safety.
The spokesman said before travelling
they need to seek an approval in order
for the force to record their itinerary
details and for a security briefng to be
given to them.
He said when they travel to Fiji they
would not reveal themselves as
personnel from the defence force but
only as civil servants.
The policy allowed all personnel to
travel to Fiji for personal business
except for those with senior ranks.
This policy was implemented in 2009.

FNPF To Help Flood Affected
Members
The Fiji National Provident Fund
Board has approved the re-activation of
the natural disaster partial withdrawal
scheme for its members who were
affected by the foods that wreaked
havoc in Western Viti Levu.
FNPF Chief Executive Offce, Mr
Aisake Taito said the Boards approval
was based on humanitarian grounds to
provide some relief to affected members.
As a corporate citizen, the FNPF has
a social responsibility to assist our
members re-build their lives after the
devastation of the food, Mr Taito said.
He said that while the Fund encouraged
its members to save for retirement,
it also has a responsibility to ensure
members needs are met especially in
times of natural disasters.
He said that FNPF would liaise with
Government offcials in the West to
determine those that will be assisted.
Members applications will need to
be verifed by the district offcers or
delegated offcials to ascertain damage
to their properties.
The verifcation process would also
include an inspection by the team from
the Fund, who would be based in the
food affected areas.
We will not receive any application for
food assistance at any of our branches
or agencies. These applications will
be received by our team who would
be on-site at the areas designated as
worst-affected.
We have put in place checks and
controls to help us determine the
validity of the claims led by members.
The key qualifers under this scheme
are:
members should have partial
withdrawal eligibility
maximum allowed for withdrawal is
$1000 per household
members should reside in affected
areas as defned by DISMAC
Mr Taito said that to ease transport and
other associated costs for members, the
Fund will be sending out teams to the
affected areas. He also revealed that
the $10 processing fee will be waived
or those applying under this ground.
He warned that assistance will not be
rendered to those who have abused or
misused Village Housing loans.
Members applying for this assistance
would need to:
1) Fully complete FNPF Partial
application forms to be witnessed by
Commissioner Western or delegated
offcers.
2) Provide correct residential addressed
for on-site inspection by FNPF
offcer(s).
3) Provide current personal bank
account statement (1 month validity).
Apart from the above, members could
also apply for housing assistance under
the normal guidelines.
The food assistance applications will
be received from February 8-21, 2012.
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama
has stressed to offcials in the Western
Division to incorporate a sense of
urgency in the reconstruction and
rehabilitation work carried out since
the recent fooding.
The head of government is touring the
Western Division and seeing frsthand
damages caused and the relief work
carried out.
While visiting these areas, the Prime
Minister also met with offcials
involved with the relief effort and
commended them for their response
and the works currently carried out.
I commend the work carried out by
all offcials. We thank you for the work
done so far. We must work with a greater
sense of urgency knowing that our
relief efforts will bring back normalcy
to the lives of people and communities
that have been affected by the foods,
Prime Minister Bainimarama said.
Communities that the Prime Minister
visited expressed their appreciation to
his visit. Similar sentiments were aired
at both Lomawai and Navisabisabi
villages in Sigatoka which included
Prime Minister Stresses Sense Of
Urgency
calls for river dredging and assistance
to clean up the village. Lomawai
villagers have asked for a relocation to
a new land given that they have been
greatly affected by the foods.
Villagers said that one of their concerns
included fooding during low tide
which was something they experienced
for the frst time.
The Prime Minister has instructed the
Commissioner Western and offcials
from the works and agriculture
ministries to look into the matter
and conduct an assessment for river
dredging.
He visited Ratu Ilaisa Memorial
School in Sigatoka to assess frsthand
problems encountered by students
following recent fooding in most parts
of the Western Division.

French Guardian Makes First Trip
A surveillance aircraft- courtesy of
the French Government- will assist
Fiji offcials in providing extensive
assessments of areas affected by recent
fooding around the country and mostly
the Western Division.
The French Guardian will continue with
its second fight and will focus on damages
to infrastructure as well at damages to the
countrys agricultural sector.
Led by Lieutenant-Colonel Arnau
Bouyssou, the surveillance crew also
includes a military attach from the
French Embassy, in Suva.
We are very happy to assist with aerial

Ratu Epeli Attends Unaids Conference
ESCAP Executive Secretary Noeleen Heyzer (C) opens conference with the President of Fiji Ratu Epeli Nailatikau (L) and Deputy Prime Minister of
Thailand Kittiratt Na-Ranong.
His Excellency the President Ratu
Epeli Nailatikau is currently in Bankok,
Thailand attending a high level United
Nations Conference on combating
AIDS in the Asia Pacifc region.
Ratu Epeli is attending the conference
as a Pacifc Ambassador for AIDS
which started on Monday.
The three-day conference which
opened at the Bangkok headquarters
of the UN Economic and Social
Commission for Asia and the Pacifc
(ESCAP), marks the frst-time for
government leaders, senior offcials,
civil society representatives and people
living with HIV from 34 Asia-Pacifc
countries to meet in a single forum to
address the ongoing epidemic in the
region.
The Asia-Pacifc region has witnessed
widespread gains in combating the
spread of HIV, but experts at a United
Nations meeting were told that the
epidemic is still outpacing the regions
efforts against new infections.
The Asia-Pacifc region has seen
impressive gains in addressing HIV,
ESCAP Executive Secretary Noeleen
Heyzer said in her opening address to
participants.
Over the past decade, the Asia-Pacifc
saw a 20 per cent drop in HIV infection
rates and over one million people in the
region obtained access to life-saving
antiretroviral treatment which also
saw a decline in the incidence of HIV
among children below the age of 15.
However, while new infections in
high HIV-prevalence countries such
as India and Thailand tapered off
between 2001 and 2009, infections in
low HIV-prevalence countries such
as Bangladesh and the Philippines
increased by 25 per cent over the same
period.
To move us closer towards the
vision of zero new infections, zero
discrimination and zero AIDS-related
deaths, we must ensure sustainable and
high-impact responses by explicitly and
meaningfully addressing HIV within
the broader inclusive development
agenda of the Asia-Pacifc region, Dr
Heyzer added.
For the frst time in history we have
the possibility to end AIDS and Asia-
Pacifc nations have shown we can
lead the world in reducing infections,
increasing treatment and making an
impact, Ratu Epeli said.
But we cannot ignore the challenges
our region faces and how these can
jeopardize our ability to progress, Dr
Heyzer noted.
Aviation Academy Enrolls New Students
For the frst time, overseas students
have enrolled in the Airport Fiji
Limiteds Aviation Academy.
This is an indication of the recognition
it is beginning to receive as a viable
alternative to other overseas aviation
schools, said Airports Fiji chief
executive, Tony Gollin.
Mr Gollin was speaking at a special
ceremony to welcome the eleven
Solomon Islanders and two Tuvaluans
into the academy.
The academy, located in the AFL
compound at Nadi, was opened in
2010 to address a shortage of air traffc
controllers at AFL and was expanded
to include training in aviation security
and airport rescue and fre-fghting
services.
To date, 80 air traffc controllers have
graduated from the academy, which has
not only satisfed AFL requirements but
also are now working in New Zealand,
Australia, USA and Canada, he said.
Mr Gollin said there were presently 11
students from Fiji who were joined by
four Solomon Islanders, all studying
towards qualifcations as air traffc
controllers.
The remaining seven Solomon
Islanders enrolled in the basic air
traffc control course, will return to
their country on graduation as qualifed
air traffc control assistants, while the
two offcers from Tuvalu will qualify
as fight service operators.
The academy is only two years old, so
it is still early days in our development,
but we have already expanded our
curriculum to include airport fre-
fghting and rescue services and
security.
These are all ICAO sanctioned
courses which means when students
graduate in their discipline they can
work at any airport in the region, said
Mr Gollin.
The AFL Aviation Academy is close
to the airport control tower and Air
Traffc Management Centre.
This gives students access to the
state of the art Aurora Air Traffc
Management System as well as other
airport facilities.
Flood Appeal Generosity Continues
The Prime Ministers Flood Relief
Fund appeal received a timely boost of
$10,000.00 today.
Mr Raj Nand of Nand Civil Contactors
Limited donated the cheque in
person to the Prime Minister, Voreqe
Bainimarama who is currently touring
the Western Division.
The Prime Minister thanked Mr Nand
for his contribution towards the appeal
which was initiated following the
recent fooding that affected parts of
the Western Division.
Prime Minister Bainimarama is
currently assessing affected areas and
getting frsthand reports of rehabilitation
programs being carried out.
The food appeal has been receiving
generous donations from major
business houses, small enterprises,
womens organisation, religious bodies
and members of the public.

representative to the Republic and
will now pursue work required of him
vigorously.
The number of ambassadors designates
to South Africa had risen over the last
seven months as the South African
President was deeply involved in
matters relating to the role of South
Africa with the Security Council, COP

The completion of the presentation
of credentials for each of the new 27

India Pays Homage To Muslim Society
Seeing the many religions in Fiji
working together to mark every
celebration in Fiji has won the praises
of First Secretary High Commission of
India Udai Rao.
Speaking at the Prophet Muhammads
birthday celebrations in Labasa, Mr
Rao said Fijis rich blessing was
through the different races in Fiji,
having to work and live together in
peace and harmony.
From Christmas to Diwali and even
Prophet Muhammads Birthday, I have
seen it being celebrated by all the races
in Fiji, Mr Rao said.
The Muslim population in Fiji may
not be large but it has contributed to the
economic progress of this nation.
They have blended with different
races all around the world and in Fiji
they have worked hard to build a multi-
ethnic country.
Mr Rao also remembered the many
people who were affected by foods
nationwide and to those who were unable
to mark Prophet Muhammads birthday.
We must reach out to the
underprivileged and I am sure that is
a teaching of the Prophet, and we hope
that the people affected by this weather
are safe.
I have come to understand their values
and traditions by mingling with then
and the Vanua Levu Muslim League
president, Al Haaj Bashir Khan, has
been a good friend of mine.
In years to come, he said the Vanua
Levu Muslim League and the High
Commission of India would form an
everlasting bond of friendship.
Soldiers,
Inmates Help In
Tree Planting
And Clean-Up
The aftermath of fooding in the
Western Division is now leading to
Government agencies working together
in rehabilitation programmes.
After two weeks of fooding, soldiers
based at the Fiji Military Forces Duke
of Edingburgh Barracks in Lautoka
will be involved in a major pine re-
planting exercise.
This is to assist Fiji Pines Limited
and Tropik Wood Industries after the
destruction left behind by heavy rain
and foods.
Offcer Commanding of the Militarys
Echo Company in Lautoka, Major
Petero Talemaivatuwiri said the
exercise would be carried out within
two week.
This is when they helped clean up
villages and communities affected by
the foods.
It is going to be a big task for us and
we will conduct the re-planting exercise
in two weeks time. We have asked for
assistance from the Fiji Corrections
Service and we are glad that they have
agreed to give us additional manpower,
Major Talemaivatuwiri said.
He said 30 inmates from the Lautoka
Corrections Centre would be involved
in the pine re-planting exercise.
We have been told that there are 400
hectares of land to plant. Fiji Pine will
let us know as soon as we fnish with
our rehabilitation works, cleaning up
food affected areas and delivering
food rations to food victims, he said.

JPS, Commissioners Of Oath
Sworn In
The swearing in of 15 Justice of Peace
(JPs) and Commissioners of Oath
represents a critical development for
the legal fraternity in the country and
accessibility to legal services.
The ceremony saw not only an increase
in female JPs and Commissioners of
Oath but also the very frst JP to be
based in Rotuma Island.
Fijis Attorney General and Minister
for Justice Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum said
the swearing in of this ffteen offcers
and their integrity towards their role
would be vital in national building.
The appointment of JPs is critical
for the maintaining of law and the
person must be of good character and
the persons nominated are of good
character, the Attorney General said.
Their work will contribute to a better
Fiji in particular for those that need
help in interpreting laws and other
functions.
The Chief Justice Anthony Gates who
presided during the ceremony echoed
the comments made by the Attorney
General and reminded the JPs and the
Commissioners on the importance of
their work.
If you wish to remain a JP or a
Commissioner and not have your
appointment revoked, you must take
your role seriously and give your best
to the public, Justice Gates said.
JPs and Commissioners do not
receive any salary or fees for their
work so you must not ask for money
for the work that you perform.
Act in good faith and avoid confict of
interest, act fairly, honestly, rightly and
Fijis public will have much for which
to thank you.
The total number of JPs around the
country now stands at 307.

Tourism Earnings Record $209.4M
Fijis gross earnings from tourism
stood at $209.4 million, showing a 5.1
per cent increase last year.
It has also been predicted tourism will
contribute more than 40 per cent to Fijis
GDP by 2021, creating an estimated
60,000 more jobs in the region.
And with Australia and New Zealand
being the major key players, the
owner of Fijis largest development,
Bob Lowres of Naisoso Island told
globalpropertyguide.com that Fijis
affordability for tourists and investors
is timely given the current global
fnancial climate.
Lowres said the strength of the tourism
industry, the high level of demand for
stock, and the Aussie dollar continuing
to be a solid performer against other
currencies, investment in Fiji has
continued to increase.
He said investors are no longer just
looking at destinations like Byron Bay
or Palm Cove for their beach homes or
investment properties, they are looking
at Pacifc Island destinations as a
viable option, receiving a higher return
on their investment.
PM'S Message For Prophet
Muhammads Birthday
Today we celebrate the birth, life and
immense spiritual infuence of Prophet
Muhammad, peace be upon him.
Prophet Muhammad lived a life of
obedience to God, and taught the
universal principles we all hold close:
love, unity, tolerance and respect.
His teachings are the bedrock of
Islam, and they transcend all cultures,
societies and religions. These are
indeed the same values all Fijians hold
paramount.
Remembering the day of Muhammads
birth is therefore a time for all Fijians to
refect upon the wisdom and guidance
that faith confers upon each one of us,
the responsibility that human beings
have to one another, and to God.
Universal respect for each other,
regardless of our race, religion and
culture is a blessing shared by all of us.
This is a time to offer appreciation for
the support Islam asks us to provide
and the responsibility to advance
opportunity and prosperity for people
everywhere.
This a time to refect within, envisioning
the world we want to build and the
changes that we want to make.
This must begin in our own hearts, our
own communities and be nourished by
our faith.
In recent weeks, Fijians have expressed
their respect and care for one another
as we help each other in the face of
devastating weather-giving to each
other in a time of need.
We must sustain our faith, patience
and love during the months and years
ahead as Fiji moves together to a new,
common future.
We are all Fijians. And today, we are
all united in celebrating the principles
of the Islamic faith, which contributes
to our communities and our country.

Solomon Islands Propose
Diplomatic Relations With Russia
Foreign Secretary, Robert Sisilo
Solomon Islands and Russia will be
working together to fast track the
proposed plan to establish a diplomatic
relation between the two countries
soon.
This follows a high level meeting
between the Russian foreign minister,
Sergey Lavrov and the countrys
minister of foreign affairs and external
trade Peter Shanel, accompanied by his
Permanent Secretary, Robert Sisilo.
Shanel and Sisilo were in Nadi, Fiji last
week for the Russian Federation and
the Pacifc Island Countries meeting.
Sisilo in a statement over the weekend said
Minister Shanel had a separate meeting
with Lavrov. They discussed a number of
issues of interest to both countries.
The proposed plan to set up diplomatic
connection was one of the top agendas,
Sisilo said.
The establishment of diplomatic
relations was one of them and it
was agreed Russia will initiate this
through a formal communication to the
Solomon Islands Government.
Sisilo said renewably energy was
another area Shanel requested Russias
assistance in.
This is one area that can save Solomon
Islands from massive expenditure in
fossil fuel consumption and a joint-
investment in generating hydro-
power deservedly calls for our joint
cooperation in renewable energy,
Shanel was quoted as saying.
The statement said Lavrov subsequently
requested further technical information
on any particular hydro-power scheme.
And Shanel promised to send him a
feasibility study report already done for
one such scheme in Solomon Islands.
Sisilo said that education and
assistance to the private sector were
two other areas Mr Shanel raised with
his Russian counterpart.
Shanel was further quoted as saying
for a start they would be seeking
scholarships in various felds, including
civil engineering and some form of
assistance in the establishment of their
tertiary institutions.
And we also invite your private sector
to come and invest in our tourism and
mining industries and establish fshing
companies onshore, Shanel told the
Russian foreign minister.
The Russian Foreign Minister agreed
these are issues worth exploring and he
had tasked offcials of both countries
to set the ball rolling so that concrete
results are achieved.
4 Million New Cancer Cases A
Year, In Western Pacifc Region
On the eve of World Cancer Day the
World Health Organization (WHO)
urged governments to strengthen
national control programmes, including
by raising awareness, amid an alarming
rise of cancer cases.
WHO warned that there could be
21.4 million cancer cases worldwide
by 2030 up from 12.7 million in
2008 with nearly two-thirds of them
occurring in low- and medium-income
countries. The poor often bear the
heaviest burden of cancer as they have
more exposure to risk factors and less
access to preventive and therapeutic
services.
"Well organized national cancer control
programmes can help to reduce the
burden and suffering of cancer," says
Dr Shin Young-soo, WHO's Regional
Director for the Western Pacifc.
The theme for this year's World Cancer
Day on February 4, as designated by
the Union for International Cancer
Control, was: "Together it is possible".
"We need to put our knowledge
into action," Dr Shin says. "Cancer
control should become everyone's
responsibility. To win the battle against
cancer, the health sector must join hands
with other sectors such as agriculture,
education, the environment, the food
industry, trade, and transportation."
WHO's Western Pacifc Region bears
a signifcant share of the global cancer
burden, accounting for 32% of all
cancers in 2008. There were slightly
more than 4 million new cases of cancer
in the region in 2008 2.31 million
in men and 1.75 million in women.
Nearly 2.6 million people in the region
died from cancer in that year.
The most common cancers among men
in the Region are of the lung, stomach,
liver, colorectum and esophagus. For
women, they are of the breast, lung,
stomach, colorectum and liver.
WHO says that 30% of all cancers
could be prevented by modifying or
avoiding such major risk factors as:
-tobacco use
-overweight and obesity
-low fruit and vegetable intake
-physical inactivity
-alcohol use
-infection by the human papilloma
(HPV) and hepatitis B viruses
-urban air pollution
-indoor smoke from household use of
solid fuels
-overexposure to sunlight.
WHO also stressed the need for
palliative care for people with advanced
stages of cancer. For patients where a
cure is not possible, effective integrated
hospital, community and home-based
care are essential to give pain relief and
palliative care for patients and their
families. - World Health Organisation

Vanuatu Jolted By Several
Quakes
VANUATU continues to be jolted by several moderate to strong
earthquakes after a magnitude 7.1 quake hit last week.
Several earthquakes, including a 6.1
and a 6.0, hit on Monday. Since the
larger quake struck on Friday there have
been 20 quakes of magnitude 4.5 or
above, according to the U.S. Geological
Survey. Most have been centered near
the 7.1 quake, which hit about 124km
west of Port-Vila, Vanuatu's capital.
No tsunami warnings have been issued,
and there have been no reports of
injuries or damage.
The region lies on the "Ring of Fire" -
an arc of earthquake and volcanic zones
that stretches around the Pacifc Rim.
About 90 per cent of the world's quakes
occur in the region.
American Samoa Estimates
Overstayers At 800
American Samoas chief immigration
offcer Ufuti Faafetai Ieremia estimates
that there are now some 800-plus
overstayers in the territory.
Ufuti made the comments at a Senate
committee hearing on a bill that would
fne sponsors of a foreigner staying
beyond the permitted time.
He has also testifed that the majority
of overstayers are from neighbouring
Samoa.
Ufuti said in December every year
about 500 of them depart the territory
and thereby reduce the number of
overstayers.
He points out daily fights from Samoa
bring in more travellers that can
become overstayers as they enter on
a 14-day permit or a 30-day visitors
permit.
Tongan Church In Sydney In Huge Debt
A Tongan church in Sydney, described
as a cornerstone of the Australian
Tongan community, is reportedly tens
of millions of dollars in debt.
But the general secretary of the Sydney
church, Reverend Sione Pinomi, was
unable to respond to questions citing
legal reasons.
The Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga in
Rooty Hill was opened three years ago
by King George Tupou the 5th.
The church is now in voluntary
administration and receivership.
It says most of the money is owed to
Westpac Bank, and an industrial paint
company which gave the church a loan.

Dad Played Games During 'Torture'
A father played Xbox games while his
"tortured" 9-year-old daughter was
being abused by his partner, a court has
been told.
The 33-year-old man, whose name is
suppressed to protect the identity of
the girl, was sentenced to three years
in prison for allowing his daughter to
be assaulted, and slapping, hitting and
kneeing her over a nine-month period.
Judge Brooke Gibson said the man
must serve a minimum non-parole
period of two years
During sentencing at Auckland District
Court, the judge said he needed to send
a message to parents who stood idly by
while their children were abused.
"This child was entitled to look to you
for protection and you failed her."
The court was told how the girl and her
brother were taken into Child Youth and
Family custody in 2001 and returned to
their parents seven years later.
Judge Gibson said the abuse began
almost immediately.
"It is an outrageous set of facts and
one of the most serious child cruelty
cases to come before the courts," Judge
Gibson said.
In December the girl's mother was
sentenced to seven and-a-half years
in prison with a minimum non-parole
period of fve years.
She is now appealing her minimum
sentence.
Her charges included assaulting the
girl with a machete and a hammer,
kicking her in the crotch while wearing
steel-capped work boots, tearing off
her toenail and pouring salt and boiling
water on the wound and writing abusive
words on the girl's body.
The girl was found by police in
November 2010 hiding in a cupboard.
She was starving, dehydrated and
covered in injuries.
"What she needed was a loving
environment. Instead she was subjected
to horrifc abuse," Judge Gibson said.
Crown prosecutor Lorraine McDonald
said there was evidence from other
witnesses that the man was there during
some of the beatings.
She said the man was also playing
X-box games in one of the rooms while
his partner beat the girl.
"Not only was he present but he was
violent himself."
Ms McDonald read part of a victim
impact statement from the girl which
she said summed up the case.
"I was really glad when police took me
to hospital as I felt safe there. While in
hospital, someone was there watching
me the whole time. I would wake up
and see that someone was sitting there
watching over me. That made me feel
safe and I could go back to sleep again.
"It feels good that mum and dad can't
hurt me anymore. I don't want to see
them anymore."
The man's lawyer Brenda Donald said
there was little support from agencies
for her client and his partner when the
children were returned to them.
She also said the man tried to stop
his partner beating the girl on some
occasions and was not aware of the full
extent of the abuse.
"He just simply wasn't there."
Judge Gibson said he could not accept
that argument because there was
evidence that the man was at the house.
"Over a long period of time - some
nine months, the child had to put up
with being assaulted and treated in a
disgraceful way by your partner."
He said there was also evidence that
a number of different agencies had
been involved with the family and the
girl could have been returned to Child
Youth and Family if the parents could
not cope.
"It is clear that your daughter is unable
to understand why she was tortured -
and that is the appropriate word for it -
by her parents while you stood idly by."
The girl and her four siblings are now
in foster care.
The case caused a storm of controversy
when the mother was sentenced, with
the head of CYF admitting social
workers failed the girl and that the
case highlighted the need to improve
practices.
Bernadine MacKenzie said there was
no doubt her organisation should have
done a better job, citing failures by a
social workers to visit and monitor the
girl, to respond to concerns raised by
her school and to work effectively with
other agencies involved.
Security Guard's Murder To Feature On TV
Police investigating the murder of security
guard Charanpreet Singh Dhaliwal last
year are appealing to the Polynesian
community to identify four young men
seen near a west Auckland construction
site where his body was discovered.
Mr Dhaliwal, 22, died of head injuries
after being assaulted.
His body was found slumped over a
slab of concrete at a Fulton Hogan
construction site in Henderson near the
northwestern motorway about 3am on
November 18.
As part of the police investigation, the
Police 10-7 television series will screen
details about the homicide.
Detective Sergeant Murray Free of
Kiwis who lost their summer holiday to
the rain are being tempted to look abroad
for another break with hundreds of dollars
being slashed off the price of fights.
The airline sale season has begun in
earnest with Air New Zealand offering
25 per cent off the cost of North
American fights and other carriers
dropping fares by hundreds of dollars.
Travel expos being held this week
will offer further discounts, with more
than $1000 being dropped from some
economy-class fares.
New Zealanders spend more on travel
during February and March than at
any other time of the year, according
to David Coombes, general manager of
product for Flight Centre.
"We are coming into that real peak
season for bookings, so the airlines
are maneuvering to make sure they're
getting that share of the revenue.
"Everybody wants share, and there are
some amazing prices out there at the
moment ... I would say the price points
are near enough to as good value as
we've seen in the market."
House of Travel retail director Brent

NZ Prime Minister Booted Out
A group of mainly Maori Protesters
forced the New Zealand Prime Minister,
John Key to leave the nation's Waitangi
Day commemorations on Sunday.
The 1840 signing of the Treaty of
Waitangi is commemorated each year
in February on the sacred place where
it was signed.
Waitakere CIB said he hoped this would
identify a group of four Polynesian
men aged 17-20 who were in the area
around the time Mr Dhaliwal's body
was found.
"Police want the wide Polynesian
community to be aware of this
screening. Someone in this community
may have vital information that could
help Police solve this homicide,'' he
said.
Mr Dhaliwal was born in India but
came to New Zealand to study about
two years before his death.
His friends and family described him
as a "kind soul'' who came here for a
better future and education.
The treaty established British Law
over the country, while at the same
time guaranteed Maori authority over
their land and culture.
Despite the protests, the welcome
continued, but Mr Key's speech was
drowned out by protesters forcing him
to leave.
Holiday Bargains As Airfares Tumble
market buoyed by a strong New Zealand
dollar - and a mediocre Kiwi summer.
"Let's be honest, the summer this year
outside of Central Otago has been
pretty rubbish across New Zealand.
"People are saying, 'Hell, I need a
holiday - I didn't really feel like I got
a good summer holiday.' So places like
the Cook Islands and Fiji are defnitely
starting to be booked up."
Despite a still-sluggish economy, the
numbers of New Zealanders travelling
overseas remain strong.
December was a record month for
short-term departures.
Traditional holiday destinations such
as Australia and the United States
remained popular, but Asia experienced
a surge in New Zealand tourists.
Mr Thomas said that was driven in part
by budget carriers such as Jetstar and
Air Asia X. Air Asia X fights from
Christchurch to Kuala Lumpur can be
bought for as little as $330 one-way.
"Those fares have brought some really
competitive pricing ... People can enjoy
a holiday in Asia for not too dissimilar
prices to what they used to pay to go
for a holiday in Australia."

'I Deserve A Second Term'
Barack Obama
US President Barack Obama has said he
believes he deserves a second term in
the White House.
His declaration, in an interview with
NBC, came as a new poll showed his
approval ratings moving past 50% for
the frst time since May 2011.
The survey also suggests Mr Obama
would beat Republican front-runner
Mitt Romney.
Mr Romney and his rivals are
now campaigning in Colorado and
Minnesota after his weekend caucus
win in Nevada.
States across the US are currently
holding nominating contests to pick a
Republican nominee to challenge Mr
Obama in November's general election.
Mr Obama's NBC interview was
broadcast ahead of the Super Bowl, the
most-watched TV event of the year.
It came two days after improved
employment fgures prompted analysts
to suggest his prospects for securing
four more years in the White House
were improving.
"I deserve a second term, but I am not
done," Mr Obama said. "We've created
3.7 million jobs in the last 23 months.
"We've created the most jobs since
2005, the most manufacturing jobs
since 1990, but we're not fnished.
"What I'm going to just keep on doing
is plodding away, very persistent. And
you know what? One of the things about
being president is you get better as time
goes on."
Split decision
The ABC News/Washington Post poll -
carried out over the end of last week and
into the weekend - indicated that some
of the positive economic data of the past
few months could be fltering through to
the electorate.
Asked directly to choose a president if
an election were being held now, 51%
of the 1,000 respondents chose Mr
Obama, with Mr Romney on 45%.
Matched against former House
of Representatives Speaker Newt
Gingrich, who is running second in the
Republican race, Mr Obama came out
ahead by a wider margin.54% to 43%
US Imposes
New Sanctions
On Iran
The United States has imposed strict
new sanctions on Iran, in protest
against that country's pursuit of its
nuclear program.
US president Barack Obama has issued
an executive order freezing all Iranian
government assets held or traded in the
United States.
The sanctions also shut down
transactions with Iran's central bank
in retaliation for claims the bank has
helped its government circumvent
previous sanctions.
A statement from the US Treasury
department says Iran will now face
ever increasing diplomatic and
economic pressure until it addresses
the international community's concerns
about the nature of its nuclear program.
US Closes Down Its
Syrian Embassy
THE United States has closed its
embassy in Syria and pulled out all
its diplomats, CNN reported citing
State Department offcials.
The news channel said most of the 17
remaining US embassy staff members,
including Ambassador Robert Ford,
travelled by convoy to neighbouring
Jordan.
The Syrian authorities were informed
after the employees were safely out of
the country.
The unnamed offcials told the media
that the worsening situation made it
impossible to continue.
"The government is getting stretched
beyond its ability to control the various
elements of violence in the country,"
one senior offcial said.
The decision was signed off by Secretary
of State Hillary Clinton, the source added.

Mom Allegedly Abandons Baby With
Homeless Woman In Downtown L.A.
A woman who handed off her baby to a
homeless person in a tent in downtown Los
Angeles has been arrested, police said.
The mom allegedly gave her baby to
another woman in a tent at 12:30 a.m.
Tuesday near Main and 3rd streets.
"I was just sleeping in my tent with my
boyfriend, you know, and then we got
woken up by a lady just shaking our tent
and trying to unzip it," a woman who
identifed herself only as Kass.
Kass said the woman came into the tent, "sat
down and started yelling, 'They're after me!
They're after me! The cops are after me!'"
Kass and her boyfriend asked the woman
what was going on.
"She goes, 'They're trying to take my baby!
They're trying to take my baby!'" Kass said.
Kass held the baby for about 45 minutes,
waiting for the mom to return and then
contacted police, said LAPD Offcer
Randolph Fukui.
Eventually, the mom fagged down some
police offcers saying, Wheres my baby?
and at that point, she was arrested on
suspicion of child endangerment, Fukui
said.
The county child services agency took
custody of the healthy, 5- to 6-month old
baby, Fukui said.

efforts, the colonel told reporters.
"Looting is now rampant in Guihulngan
which forced us to commit [more
troops] with the Philippine national
police," he added.
The earthquake struck the central
Philippines north of Negros Island,
about 50 kilometers from the big
population centre of Cebu which
houses more than 2 million people.
Almost four hours after the quake
struck, a 6.2-magnitude aftershock hit
the central Philippines again, panicking
rescuers once more.
The US geological survey measured
the quake at a depth of 46 kilometers.
Witnesses reported violent shaking and
government authorities say windows
were smashed and buildings cracked.
High-rise buildings appear to have
been largely unaffected, while some
bridges have been cut. There have been
over 40 aftershocks.
Workers and students run after they feel the magnitude 6.7
earthquake
Freeze Brings Deaths, Chaos To
Europe
Freezing weather in Europe is still
causing chaos across the continent,
with roads closed, fights cancelled,
and gas supplies choked off.
More than 300 people are now reported
to have died in the cold snap, which has
seen temperatures dip as low as minus
40 degrees Celsius.
The bitter cold front even crossed
the Mediterranean into North Africa,
where as many as 16 people were
killed on Algeria's snow-slicked roads
or in other weather-related accidents.
Europe's homeless people have borne
the brunt of the deaths, with dozens of
transients freezing to death in unheated
apartments, fre escapes or in makeshift
street shelters in countries including
Italy, France, Poland and Ukraine.
Snowfalls over large areas of Britain
caused disruption to transport, with
roads closed and landings at London's
Heathrow airport cut by 50 per cent
as crews cleared runways and de-iced
aircraft.
But the problems were far more serious
in the Balkans, where huge amounts
have snow paralyzed large areas.
The Bosnian capital Sarajevo is under
a state of emergency and thousands of
people in communities in Montenegro ,
Serbia and Croatia remain cut off.
More than 125 people have been killed
in Ukraine and 53 in Poland.
The Italian capital Rome has witnessed
its heaviest snow fall in a quarter of a
century.
The snow-covered city was virtually
paralyzed after black ice streaked the
streets and snowed-in residents
As residents resorted to sawing
through fallen trees blocking the roads
themselves, many people said they had
had no assistance from the authorities.
"It's awful. I had to walk two hours
through freezing temperatures just
to get to the metro," Rome resident
Federico Maneski said. "The area is
full of trees that have fallen on cars but
no-one's come to help us."
The Italian death toll reached 17 when
three homeless people were found
dead, while two men suffered heart
attacks as they shoveled snow in the
Abruzzo region and Campania regions.
Almost 70,000 people remained cut
off in snowed-in Serbian villages, with
police and military units providing
basic necessities, said Predrag Maric,
the police offcial in charge of Serbia's
emergency services.
Overnight temperatures in Finland
plummeted to minus 40 degrees
Celsius, but did not deter many
Helsinki voters from turning out to
vote in a presidential election.
China Bans Airlines From Paying
Eu Carbon
CHINA'S airlines are banned from paying charges on carbon
emissions imposed by the European Union.
The news agency reported the
ban, quoting the Civil Aviation
Administration of China.
The EU imposed the tax with effect
from January 1, but more than two
dozen countries, including India,
Russia, China and the United States,
have opposed the move, saying it
violates international law.
"China's airlines are not allowed to pay
a charge on carbon emissions imposed
by the Europe Union, and neither to hike
freights nor to add other fees accordingly
in absence of government permission,"
Xinhua quoted the body as saying.
No one at the Civil Aviation
Administration of China was
immediately available for comment,
but Beijing has said repeatedly that it
opposes the new EU scheme, which
Chinese state media has said would
lead to a "trade war" in the sector.
The China Air Transport Association,
which represents the country's airlines,
said last month the government was
considering "countermeasures",
without giving any details.
The EU launched the ETS (emissions
trading scheme) in 2005 in a bid to
reduce carbon emissions of power
stations and industrial plants.
It decided to include airlines,
responsible for three per cent of global
emissions, in the system in the absence
of a global agreement to cap aviation
emissions.
Airlines that refuse to comply could
be fned with the possibility of being
denied the right to land in the 27-nation
EU in extreme cases, the bloc has said.
6-Organ Transplant
A nine-year-old girl is making what
doctors describe as a remarkable
recovery, days after surgeons
transplanted six of her organs in a
groundbreaking medical procedure.
The surgery performed on young
Alannah Shevenell sought to remove an
aggressive cancerous growth festering
since 2008 that had attacked her
stomach, liver, pancreas, esophagus,
small intestine and spleen.
The surgery was performed in Boston,
Massachusetts on Tuesday last week at
Children's Hospital, one of America's
most highly regarded medical facilities.
"For just under 100 days Alannah and
her grandmother have been staying at
Children's while she received treatment
for a rare and aggressive cancer that
was compromising several of her
internal organs," the hospital said in a
statement.
"When all other treatments had failed,
Heung Bae Kim, MD, director of
Children's Pediatric Transplant Center
suggested a multivisceral transplant
that would remove Alannah's tumour
and replace the six organs that had
been damaged by its presence.
The nine-year old, who hails from
the northeastern state of Maine, was
the lucky recipient of organs from a
recently deceased child of the same size
and blood type, and which were able to
be transplanted at the same time.
Kim told the Boston Globe newspaper
that they anticipate that Alannah will
make a complete recovery. "She will
not have real restrictions in terms of
activity," he told the Globe.

Queen Says Thanks For 60 Years Service On Her Diamond Jubilee
ON the day marking her 60th anniversary as British monarch; Queen Elizabeth II has thanked her people and renewed her pledge to serve them.
Echoing words she offered in the 1940s
as a young princess, Elizabeth, now
85, has reaffrmed to "dedicate myself
anew to your service".
"Today, as I mark 60 years of your
Queen, I am writing to thank you for the
wonderful support and encouragement
that you have given to me and Prince
Phillip over these years and to tell you
how deeply moved we have been to
receive so many kind messages about
the Diamond Jubilee," Her Majesty
said in a statement.
On February 6, 1952, while travelling
with her husband Prince Philip in
Kenya, news reached 25-year-old
Princess Elizabeth that her father King
George VI had died.
The mother-of-two immediately
assumed the role of Queen and today
has served as sovereign for 60 years.
"In this special year, as I dedicate
myself anew to your service, I hope that
we will all be reminded of the power
of togetherness and the convening
strength of family, friendship and
good neighbourliness, examples of
which I have been fortunate to see
throughout my reign and which my
family and I look forward to seeing in
many forms as we travel throughout
the United Kingdom and the wider
Commonwealth," she said.
The Queen and Prince Philip along
with other senior members of the royal
family will visit many Commonwealth
nations as part of the Diamond Jubilee
celebrations.
The tour schedule includes an
Australian visit by Prince Charles and
his wife Camilla.
Many special events are planned to
mark the Queen's historic milestone,
including a Thames River pageant on
June 3.
Australians will be among 20,000
people making their way along the
London waterway aboard some 1000
crafts in a display set to be watched by
millions around the globe.
"I hope also that this Jubilee year will
be a time to give thanks for the great
advances that have been made since
1952 and to look forward to the future
with clear head and warm heart as we
join together in our celebrations," The
Queen said.
"I send my sincere good wishes to you
all."
Across the UK the Queen's accession
to the throne will be marked by a series
of royal gun salutes.
The Queen attended a service at West
Newton church on her Sandringham
Estate, the property where her father
died, in eastern England.
Egypt's Hosni
Mubarak To Be
Moved To Tora Prison
EGYPTIAN offcials say Hosni
Mubarak will shortly be moved
to a prison hospital as soon as
the facility is upgraded to house
the 83-year-old former president.
The offcials said the hospital in Tora
prison in Cairo will be upgraded in
"record time", but there is no set date
for the move.
Since his arrest last April, Mubarak has
been held in custody frst at a hospital
in the Red Sea resort city of Sharm el-
Sheikh and later at a military hospital
outside Cairo.
The offcials said nearly 50 stalwarts of
Mubarak's regime held at Tora would
also be dispersed to fve different
jails in the Cairo area. They include
Mubarak's two sons.
Seaworld Sued Over 'Enslaved' Killer Whales
Five killer whales have been named as
plaintiffs in a court case which argues
they deserve the same constitutional
protection from slavery as humans.
A US judge is considering a lawsuit
by People for the Ethical Treatment of
Animals' (Peta) against SeaWorld.
It is reportedly the frst time a US
court has heard legal arguments over
whether animals should enjoy the same
constitutional protections as humans.
SeaWorld's legal team said the case
was a waste of time and resources.
The marine park's lawyer, Theodore
Shaw, told the court in San Diego:
"Neither orcas nor any other animal
were included in the 'We the people'...
when the Constitution was adopted."
He said that if the case were successful,
it could have implications not just
on how other marine parks or zoos
operate, but even on the police use of
sniffer dogs to detect bombs and drugs.
'Historic case'
Peta says the killer whales are treated
like slaves for being forced to live in
tanks and perform daily at the SeaWorld
parks in California and Florida.
It is not considered likely that the
whales will win their freedom, but
campaigners said they were pleased
the case even made it to a courtroom.
The lawsuit invokes the 13th
Amendment to the constitution, which
abolished "slavery or involuntary
servitude" in the US.
Jeffrey Kerr, the lawyer representing
the fve whales, said: "For the frst time
in our nation's history, a federal court
heard arguments as to whether living,
breathing, feeling beings have rights and
can be enslaved simply because they
happen to not have been born human.
"By any defnition these orcas have
been enslaved here."
Hearing the arguments for about an
hour, US District Judge Jeffrey Miller
raised concerns over whether animals
could be represented as plaintiffs in a
lawsuit.
He will issue a ruling at a later date.
Peta names the fve wild-captured
orca plaintiffs as Tilikum and Katina,
at SeaWorld Orlando; and Kasatka,
Corky, and Ulises, at SeaWorld San
Diego.
It is not Tilikum's frst time in the media
spotlight - he drowned his trainer
before horrifed spectators in February
2010, prompting a ban on the Florida
Parks employees entering the water to
perform tricks with the orcas.
The same whale has also been linked to
two other deaths.
China Gives Over USD950 MN For People
Facing The Cold
In a bid to provide food and clothing
for people in extremely cold regions,
the Chinese government has distributed
over 6 billion yuans (over USD950
million) as winter relief funds.
On Tuesday, the government distributed
over 1.20 billion yuan (about USD200
million) as winter relief funds for
weather-stricken areas, the media
quoted the Ministry of Civil Affairs as
saying in a statement.
The statement said with over 5 billion
yuan distributed last December, the
total amount of the distributed winter
relief funds has crossed over 6 billion
yuan.
The ministry has also directed concerned
provinces to properly handle disaster
relief work following snowstorms and
freezing weather, the statement said.
The funds were arranged by the
Ministry of Civil Affairs and the
Ministry of Finance to help people in
extremely cold regions.

China Mum Gives Birth To 7Kg Baby
A MOTHER in central China has given birth to a seven kilogram baby,
possibly the largest newborn in the country's record books.
The 29-year-old mother in Henan
province gave birth to the boy on
Saturday by cesarean section. It said
delivery took just 20 minutes and both
mother and the baby, named Chun
Chun, are doing fne.
The paper said Chun Chun's parents
are average size and there was nothing
unusual about his mother's pregnancy
or diet.
The paper said it wasn't immediately
clear whether Chun Chun's 7.04kg
(15.52 pounds) made China's record
books.
Guinness World Records says the
heaviest newborn ever recorded was
born to an Ohio woman in 1879 and
weighed 10.77kg (23.7 pounds).
Singaporean Pharma Saleswomen
Offer Sex To Sell Pills
Pharmaceutical saleswomen in
Singapore have no qualms in having
sex with doctors in a bid to boost their
sales, according to reports.
A 30-year-old saleswoman, known
only as Cheryl, has heard of many
young and pretty saleswomen willing
to sell their "body" to meet their sales
target, Nanyang Siang Pau reported.
One of them, she claimed, was even
caught in the act with a doctor in his
clinic last year.
Cheryl, who works for a multi-national
company, said saleswomen faced
pressure to meet sales targets, failing
which they could face action, which
included being sacked, as reported.
She even said that some wore revealing
clothes just to increase their chances of
closing deals.
Mum Charged After Two-Year-Old
Boy Points Loaded Gun At Police
A TWO-year-old boy pointed a loaded gun at police offcers in
Memphis after they were called to reports of three children being
left unattended in a still-running car.
Police believe the kids - aged four,
two and nine months - were left in the
vehicle while their mother Erica Rooks
had her nails done in a nearby salon.
Returning to the car, Rooks told police
she had just gone to use the bathroom.
However, investigators said a sign-in
sheet at the salon showed she had just
fnished a full nail service.
When offcers asked the 23-year-old
for her licence, she dropped a bag of
marijuana into the car, according to police.
It was then that one of the offcers
noticed the two-year-old boy inside
the vehicle holding a loaded gun and
pointing it at them.
Rooks has been charged with
possession of a controlled substance,
possession of an unlawful frearm,
and three counts of leaving a child
unattended.
She is out of jail on a $5000 bond.
The three children were released into
the custody of Rooks' uncle.
Last known World War I veteran dies at 110
Florence Green never saw the front
line. Her war was spent serving food,
not dodging bullets.
But Green, who has died at age 110,
was the last known surviving veteran of
World War I. She was serving with the
Women's Royal Air Force as a waitress
at an air base in eastern England when
the guns fell silent on Nov. 11, 1918.
It was not until 2010 that she was
offcially recognized as a veteran after
a researcher found her service record in
Britain's National Archives.
Green died last Saturday at the Briar
House Care Home in King's Lynn,
eastern England, two weeks before her
111th birthday, the home said.
Retired Air Vice-Marshal Peter Dye,
director-general of the RAF Museum,
said it was ftting that the last survivor
of the frst global war was someone
who had served on the home front.
"In a way, that the last veteran should be
a lady and someone who served on the
home front is something that reminds
me that warfare is not confned to the
trenches," Dye said.
"It reminds us of the Great War, and all
warfare since then has been something
that involved everyone. It's a collective
experience ... Sadly, whether you are in
New York, in London, or in Kandahar,
warfare touches all of our lives."
She was born Florence Beatrice
Patterson in London on Feb. 19, 1901,
and joined the newly formed Women's
Royal Air Force in September 1918 at
the age of 17.
The service trained women to work
as mechanics, drivers and in other
jobs to free men for front-line duty.
Green went to work as a steward in the
offcers' mess, frst at the Narborough
airdrome and then at RAF Marham in
eastern England, and was serving there
when the war ended.
Decades later, Green remembered her
wartime service with affection.
"I met dozens of pilots and would go
on dates," she said in an interview in
2008. "I had the opportunity to go up
in one of the planes but I was scared of
fying. I would work every hour God
sent. But I had dozens of friends on the
base and we had a great deal of fun in
our spare time. In many ways, I had the
time of my life."
After the war she stayed in the area,
raising three children with her husband
Walter Green.
Once her service record was
rediscovered, the RAF embraced the
centenarian veteran, marking her 110th
birthday in February 2011 with a cake.
Asked what it was like to be 110,
Green said "It's not much different to
being 109."
She praised the offcers she had served
during the war as perfect gentlemen.
"It was very pleasant and they were
lovely," she said. "Not a bit of bother.
They kept us on our toes and there was
no slacking."
A delegation from the air base had
been due to visit Green on Feb. 19 to
celebrate her 111th birthday.
"When we heard the news there was a
palpable silence, because we all hoped
she would make it," said Squadron
Leader Paula Willmot.
RAF Marham's station commander,
Group Captain David Cooper, said
Green "will be sorely missed and our
thoughts are now with her friends and
family."
World War I "the war to end all wars"
killed about 20 million people in four
years of fghting between the Allied
powers including Britain, France and the
United States and Germany and its allies.
To Cut Corners, Britain To Give MPS Free Ipads
Tens of thousands of pounds may be spent
by the House of Commons to give every
British parliamentarian a free iPad tablet
computer, as part of a modernization plan.
Sixteen members have been testing the
Apple devices over the past year as part
of proposals to modernize the parliament
and effect savings in printing costs.
The House's cross-party Administration
Committee has recommended the
"rapid rollout of suitable mobile tablet
hardware" to all 650 MPs.
Chairman Sir Alan Haselhurst said:
"It seems that this is the future, for the
convenience in terms of dealing with all
the work MPs have to do, but also because
it assists in what is a determined policy of
the House -- reducing the paper use."
He forecast "an overall saving for the
public purse" with such a measure.

'Munnabhai' Team Back With 'Fools'
The MUNNABHAI team is back!
Sangeeth Sivan, who has directed various
genres in the past, but is best known
for the rib-tickling hits APNA SAPNA
MONEY MONEY and KYAA KOOL
HAI HUM, has teamed Sanjay Dutt and
Arshad Warsi for the principal roles in his
next laughathon, titled FOOLS. "Sanju
was the frst to come on board. He loved
the script," Sivan states. FOOLS will be
produced by T.P. Aggarwal and will be
flmed extensively in Europe.
Meanwhile, Sivan is all set to start
APNA SAPNA MONEY MONEY-2
for Mukta Arts. "We are still in the
process of writing the script," Sivan
divulges, "The flm will have a mix
of original stars of the flm along with
new names, who will be fnalized once
the writing is complete."
Kareena Agree To Slip Between The
Sheets With Rampal In Heroine.
Kareena Kapoor has always been
against lovemaking scenes with her
co-stars, obviously except with Saif
Ali Khan. But this time, the actress is
making an expectation. She is ready
for a bed scene with her Heroine co-
star, Arjun Rampal.
Well, all thanks to the director, Madhur
Bhandarkar, for persuading Kareena to
agree for the scene. In the lovemaking
scene, Kareenas character ends up with
Arjun, after drowning a few drinks down.
Bhandakar assured Bebo that the scene
will be shot aesthetically and that only
a few selected crew members will take
part in the shoot. The clip will be shot
on the 20th of March at a fve-star hotel
in Mumbai.
Deepika Out, Priyanka In!
Now that Deepika Paukone has
reportedly walked for Ramesh
Tauranis sequel to the 2008 thriller
Race, it is heard that Priyanka Chopra
is most likely to step into Deepys
shoes. The actress has gone through the
script and is said to have liked it.
Says a source close to the project, It
would be rather nice if Priyanka accepts
the offer. She had been considered for
the role earlier as well. She is aware of
the script. So there wont be any time
lost over narration. Things can easily
fall into place.
Priyanka Chopra is currently in
Hyderabad, shooting for Rakesh Roshans
Krrish 3. The actress will meet Taurani as
soon as she returns to Mumbai.
Vidya Balan To Marry Siddharth
Soon
The news of Vidya Balan tying the
knot with UTV head honcho Siddharth
Roy Kapoor again blew up. News is
doing the rounds that very soon Vidya
Balan will get married to Siddharth
Roy Kapoor. The actress is planning
to get hitched post the release of her
upcoming flm, Kahaani where she is
playing the role of a pregnant woman.
A source said, Vidya has had an
amazing year with The Dirty Picture
and No One Killed Jessica. This year
her frst release is Kahaani and Vidya
is super excited about it as she plays a
pregnant woman in the flm. Post its
release, Vidya will start preparing for
her wedding. She is in a very good space
as far as her career is concerned and her
family feels that it is time that she now
settles down in her personal life too.
And being an obedient daughter, Vidya
wants to fulfll her parents wish by tying
the knot with Siddharth at the earliest.
Vidya and Siddharth never confrmed
their relationship but the duo was
spotted together in various occasions,
Both Vidya and Siddharth are very
fond of each other. One also hears of
Vidya accompanying Kapoor on a few
family functions, pretty much putting
an offcial stamp on them as a couple.
An April- May wedding is on the cards
for sure," added the source.
Last year it was rumored that Vidya
tied the knot with Sidhharth secretly
and the couple was off for honeymoon
and they were staying in a new fat in
Bandra. Putting all the false rumors to
rest, Vidya then clarifed that she would
never do such a thing.
Cyber space went abuzz about Vidya
having not just married Siddharth,
but also honeymooning. However,
Vidya soon cleared the rumours
adding that she strongly believes in
the institution of marriage and will
not keep her wedding a secret or live
in. And whenever she does plan to
marry, everyone would be informed
about it. So now that preps have
begun, an announcement post
the release should be expected,
said the source.
Without cooking the story much, its
better to wait and watch whether Vidya
is really tying the knot with Siddharth
or it is just another juicy story.

Health Benefts Of Spinach
The health benefts of spinach are
numerous and its ability to help prevent
disease is well known. Spinach is at the
top of many super food lists.
Spinach Nutrition
Spinach and other dark leafy greens
like kale, collards, Swiss chard, turnip
greens and bok choy are loaded with
calcium, folic acid, vitamin K and iron.
Spinach is also rich in vitamin C,
fber and carotenoids. Add its lutein
and biofavanoids and spinach is a
nutritional powerhouse.
Why Eat Spinach?
Spinach nutrition is amazing. The
calcium content in spinach and the other
dark leafy greens mentioned above
strengthens bones.
The A and C vitamins in spinach
plus the fber, folic acid, magnesium
and other nutrients help control
cancer, especially colon, lung and
breast cancers. Folate also lowers
the blood levels of something called
homocysteine, a protein that damages
arteries. So spinach also helps protect
against heart disease.
The favonoids in spinach help protect
against age related memory loss.
Spinach's secret weapon, lutein, makes
it one of the best foods in the world to
prevent cataracts, as well as age related
macular degeneration, the leading
cause of preventable blindness in the

cheese
* 1 cup of dried beans or peas
* 1/2 cup of bok choy
* 5 fgs
* 2 corn tortillas

How Much Calcium Does a
Person Need?
Preteens to Early 20's: You should be
getting 3-4 servings from high calcium
sources or 9-12 servings medium
calcium sources (1200-1500 mg*).
Mid-20's to 40's: You need 2-3 servings
from high calcium sources or 6-9
servings from medium calcium sources
(1000 mg*).
Pregnant or Breast Feeding: During
this time, it is recommended you get
3 servings from high calcium sources
or 9 servings from medium calcium
sources (1200 mg*).
From Menopause On: If you are
taking estrogen, get 2-3 servings from
high calcium sources or 6-9 servings
medium calcium sources (1000 mg*).
If you are not taking estrogen, consume
4 servings from high calcium sources
or 12 servings from medium calcium
sources (1500 mg*).
If you are taking calcium supplements,
the calcium needs to be easily absorbed
by the body. The tablet should dissolve
almost entirely in a small glass of warm
water or vinegar within 30 minutes. If
you're ill or if you've had kidney stones,
talk to your doctor before taking any
supplements.
Preventing Osteoporosis
According to the National Osteoporosis
Foundation, there are several steps you
can take to prevent osteoporosis:
* The National Osteoporosis
Foundation and the National Institutes
of Health experts recommend estrogen
replacement therapy (ERT) for
women at high risk for osteoporosis
(experiencing early menopause, a
blood relative with osteoporosis, or
below normal bone mass for her age).
* Getting an adequate amount of
calcium may help protect you against
osteoporosis. National surveys
have shown, however, that many
Americans are not consuming enough
calcium. You need normal levels of
vitamin D to absorb calcium. Your
body manufactures this vitamin as a
result of exposure to sunlight, and it
is also available in vitamin-enriched
milk products. Too much vitamin
D is harmful -- you can safely take
400 units (the recommended daily
allowance) in a multivitamin, but don't
take additional supplements without
frst consulting your doctor.
* Exercise can also be helpful in
building and maintaining strong bones.
Walking or jogging, racquet sports,
hiking, aerobic dance, stair climbing,
and almost any other exercises are
all benefcial. Note that the benefts
of exercise last only as long as you
maintain the program!
What about kidney stones? Growing
evidence suggests that a high-calcium
diet does not increase the risk of kidney
stones, as previously believed. A 12-
year study of more than 91,000 women
found that those who ate diets rich in
calcium were 35 percent less likely
to develop kidney stones than women
who ate little calcium. An earlier
study showed similar results in men.
Calcium supplements however, don't
seem to provide the same protection.
Women who got their calcium from
pills had a 20 percent higher risk of
kidney stones than those who did not
use pills, researchers found.

outing for dinner will prove exciting.
Capricorn (Dec 22-Jan 19):
You seem to be getting isolated. This
is perhaps due to you preoccupation
with your personal affairs. You need
to cultivate more goodwill in order to
make progress in your career. Let not
personal hardships at home or in your
love life hinder your progress in your
career. Some of you may have a slight
health problem.

different could overtake you. A new
person could also come into your life.
Long distance journeys are indicated
which will be fruitful and enjoyable.
You will receive favourable work
offers but you may not be happy with
the terms offered. Handle the situation
diplomatically, the outcome will be good.
Pisces (Feb 19-March 20):
You will be given charge of a prestigious
project attached with handsome
incentives. Handling your work with a
sense of purpose, and frmness with your

You may have to look after additional
responsibility and you have means to
do so. A dinner date this week is full of

This Is Something We Should All Know........!!!!
Microwaving Water!
A 26-year old man decided to have
a cup of coffee. He took a cup of water
and put it in the microwave to heat it up
(something that he had done numerous
times before). I am not sure how long
he set the timer for, but he wanted to
bring the water to a boil. When the
timer shut the oven off, he removed the
cup from the oven. As he looked into
the cup, he noted that the water was
not boiling, but suddenly the water in
the cup 'blew up' into his face. The cup
remained intact until he threw it out of
his hand, but all the water had fown
out into his face due to the build-up of
energy. His whole face is blistered and
he has 1st and 2nd degree burns to his
face which may leave scarring.
He also may have lost partial sight in
his left eye. While at the hospital, the
doctor who was attending to him stated
that this is a fairly common occurrence
and water (alone) should never be
heated in a microwave oven. If water
is heated in this manner, something
should be placed in the cup to diffuse
the energy such as a wooden stir stick,
tea bag, etc, (nothing metal).
General Electric's
Response:
Thanks for contacting us; I will be
happy to assist you. The e-mail that
you received is correct. Microwaved
water and other liquids do not always
bubble when they reach boiling point.
They can actually get superheated
and not bubble at all. The superheated
liquid will bubble up out of the cup
when it is moved or when something
like a spoon or tea bag is put into it.
To prevent this from happening and
causing injury, do not heat any liquid
for more than two minutes per cup.
After heating, let the cup stand in the
microwave for thirty seconds before
moving it or adding anything into it.
Here is what our local science teacher
had to say on the matter: 'Thanks for
the microwave warning. I have seen
this happen before. It is caused by a
phenomenon known as super heating.
It can occur any time water is heated
and will particularly occur if the vessel
that the water is heated in is new, or
when heating a small amount of water
(less than half a cup).
What happens is that the water heats
faster than the vapour bubbles can
form. If the cup is very new, then it is
unlikely to have small surface scratches
inside it that provide a place for the
bubbles to form. As the bubbles cannot
form and release some of the heat that
has built up, the liquid does not boil,
and the liquid continues to heat up well
past its boiling point.
What then usually happens is that the
liquid is bumped or jarred, which is
just enough of a shock to cause the
bubbles to rapidly form and expel
the hot liquid. The rapid formation
of bubbles is also why a carbonated
beverage spews when opened after
having been shaken.'
Please read this. It could very well
save you from a lot of pain and
suffering.

The Contract of Employment
Every employed individual
has a contract of employment.
Often the contract is unwritten and
will be comprised mainly of implied
terms. The terms of a verbal contract
of employment will be made up of the
representations made to you by the
employer prior to taking the job, plus
terms which are implied into every
contract of employment by law.
Representations that may have been
made to you may include such things
as the following:
1. The title accompanying the
position which you will be employed
in;
2. The duties required in your
position;
3. The salary or wage that will be
paid to you;
4. The benefts that will be
provided to you;
5. The performance requirements;
6. The start date of your
employment;
7. The hours which you are
required to work;
8. The date on which you
employment may end.
Terms implied by law include the
following:
1. That you will not be terminated
from your employment without just
cause or reasonable notice of the
termination;
2. That you will be provided with
a safe and respectful work environment;
3. That you will not be subject to
discrimination in fulflling the duties of
your position;
4. That all provisions of the
Employment Standards Act will be
complied with in your employment;
5. That you will be provided
with the necessary tools to adequately
perform your job;
That the terms of your employment
will not be changed in a fundamental
manner without either your consent
or reasonable notice to you of those
proposed changes.
The Written Contract of
Employment and Enforceability
Many employees also have written
contracts of employment. These
contracts often have provisions
regarding the responsibilities of
an employer when terminating the
employment. The usual issue which
arises when an employee who has
a written contract of employment is
terminated is whether the employer
can enforce the terms of the written
contract of employment. This is so
because generally written contracts
of employment will be more
advantageous to the employer than
the employee with respect to terms
detailing responsibilities of employers
when terminating employees.
Written contracts however are often
not enforceable. The enforceability
of the contract of employment may
be challenged on a number of basis,
including the following:
1. Failure to comply with the
minimum employment standards
as prescribed by the Employment
Standards Act;
No consideration provided for the
contract of employment - this is a
challenge which will often be available
if the contract of employment was
signed after the employment has
already begun;
2. Duress - this arises in
situations where an employee has been
told that he will only be given the job
or continue his employment with the
company if he signs the employment
contract;
3. Misunderstanding of the terms
of the contract of employment.
If the enforceability of the written
contract is not successfully challenged
the provisions in the contract with
respect to termination of employment
will govern.
Termination of Employment
An employer can end the employment
relationship at any time. The free will
of parties to a contract is recognized
by our courts. In practical terms, what
this means is that the Court will not
force continued employment between
parties.
The result of the termination of your
employment will depend on whether
the employer had "just cause" for the
termination. If the employer had just
cause for the termination, they are
entitled to end the employment without
notice to you. If the employer does not
have just cause for the termination,
they are required to provide you with
reasonable notice of the termination.
Cause for Termination
If an employer is able to establish that
he has just cause for the termination,
they are not required to give you any
notice of the termination. The usual
allegations of cause on the part of
employers include the following:
1. Failure to adequately perform
duties;
2. Lack of qualifcations for
position;
3. Tardiness;
4. Time missed from work;
5. Frustration of the contract of
employment due to disability;
6. Insubordination;
7. Theft;
8. Failure to follow instructions;
9. Incompetence.
The above is a list of the usual types
of allegations I see employers make in
attempts to justify termination.
In a general sense, employers must
show that you have been spoken to
about the behaviour that has led to the
termination on previous occasions,
that you were given an opportunity
to correct the behaviour and that you
were warned that if you did not correct
the behaviour your employment would
be terminated. If an employer alleges
they had cause for the dismissal, the
burden is on them to prove that there
was just cause.
Reasonable Notice of Termination
When an employer terminates
employment without cause, the
employer is required to provide
"Reasonable Notice of the
Termination". The question then
becomes what is reasonable notice. In
determining what would be reasonable
notice, every case turns on its own
particular facts.
The purpose of the period of notice is
intended to bridge the period between
termination and obtaining replacement
employment.
Some of the factors which are
considered of importance by the Court
in determining what is reasonable
notice are as follows:
1. The character of the
employment - particularly the amount
of responsibility and whether or not
an individual has supervisory duties in
their position;
2. The length of the employment;
3. The age of the employee;
4. The availability of similar
employment, having regard to the
experience, training and qualifcations
of the employee.
When Judges decide cases they will
consider the above factors, as well as any
other factors relevant to the particular
circumstances and come to a decision
regarding the appropriate period of notice
given the particular facts of the case
before them. Judges will also consider
previously decided cases to assist them
in coming to their conclusion.
As stated above, an employer is
required to provide reasonable notice of
the termination of employment. They
are not required to provide a severance
package. Damages (or a severance
package) are paid by employers to
compensate for their breach of the term
of the contract to provide reasonable
notice. If an employer fails to provide
reasonable notice, the damages that the
employee is entitled to are calculated
by determining what would have been
reasonable notice and what would
have been earned by the employee if
he had been provided with reasonable
notice. Any earnings during the period
of reasonable notice are then deducted.

Saying "No" To Everything
Your toddler's constant use of the word "no" stems from a strong desire to
be independent. Here's how to cope.
Your toddler's desire for independence
can mean she displays a lot of
unreasonable negative behaviour that's
puzzling or, at worst, irritating.
Common examples include a refusal to
let you strap her into her buggy, turning
down food she enjoyed last week and
insisting you carry out an impossible task,
such as fnding a favourite toy that's been
left at home when you're on a journey.
This diffcult phase may not last long in
some toddlers, but for others it can go
on for many months or even continue
into later childhood. This can be hard
for some parents to handle.
It helps to realise this behaviour is a
normal developmental stage - toddlers
are just trying their new-found will as
they make a bid for independence.
Positive steps
You'll keep your sanity if you make an
effort at the beginning of the toddler
stage to 'toddler-proof' your home - this
cuts down on the need for unnecessary
battles.
It helps if she doesn't get too tired
or hungry - regular mealtimes and
bedtimes make a big difference.
Make a determined effort to keep your
use of the word "no" to a minimum - as far
as possible, make your requests positive,
"keep your bike on the pavement" rather
than "don't go on the road".
If you have to refuse a request, use
phrases such as "great idea, we'll play
that later" instead of "no, I'm too busy
to play with you".
If your toddler is strong-willed and
often challenges you, do your best to
be patient and remember this stage
won't last forever.
Toddlers need to try out things for
themselves as often as possible, so try
not to be too controlling - for example,
it can help to let your child climb into
her car seat instead of being placed
there by you.
When it has to be "no", for safety
reasons perhaps, make it calm and frm
- show your toddler you mean it, but
don't get angry.
For younger toddlers you may have
to add actions to your words - lift her
away from the video machine or plug,
and offer a toy to take her mind off it.
Use clever tactics - "I bet I can race
you to get your shoes on" often works
better than "get your shoes on now".
Offer your toddler choices, within
limits, to keep battles to a minimum,
so that "no" is a less likely response -
"do you want to wear your red skirt or
black trousers?" or "would you like an
apple or an orange?", for example.
Use praise when she's good to
encourage her to repeat the behaviour.
One of the most useful techniques with
toddlers is distraction, and you should
use it for as long as it works - "I think I
hear Daddy's car arriving" or suddenly
starting a song often makes toddlers
forget they were about to start a battle.
Try not to laugh at your toddler when
she says "no" - it can be tempting when
it's amusing, but this is likely to upset a
small child who takes her independence
seriously.
When you can, try to explain why
some behaviour isn't acceptable - as
your child gets older, she'll understand
more about this, but it can start very
soon - "touching that might break it" or
"that's hot and you'll burn".
Use delaying words - "later perhaps" or
"not until after lunch".
Offer alternatives - "you can't write
on the wall, but you can write on this
piece of paper".
Lighten up - does whatever it is they're
doing really matter?
Keep a positive attitude - look for good
behaviour and praise your child
Little Red Riding Hood
Once upon a time, there was a little girl
who lived in a village near the forest.
Whenever she went out, the little girl
wore a red riding cloak, so everyone in
the village called her Little Red Riding
Hood.
One morning, Little Red Riding Hood
asked her mother if she could go to
visit her grandmother as it had been
awhile since they'd seen each other.
"That's a good idea," her mother said.
So they packed a nice basket for
Little Red Riding Hood to take to her
grandmother.
When the basket was ready, the little
girl put on her red cloak and kissed her
mother goodbye.
"Remember, go straight to Grandma's
house," her mother cautioned. "Don't
dawdle along the way and please
don't talk to strangers! The woods are
dangerous."
"Don't worry, mommy," said Little Red
Riding Hood, "I'll be careful."
But when Little Red Riding Hood
noticed some lovely fowers in the
woods, she forgot her promise to her
mother. She picked a few, watched the
butterfies fit about for awhile, listened
to the frogs croaking and then picked a
few more.
Little Red Riding Hood was enjoying
the warm summer day so much,
that she didn't notice a dark shadow
approaching out of the forest behind
her...
Suddenly, the wolf appeared beside
her.
"What are you doing out here, little
girl?" the wolf asked in a voice as
friendly as he could muster.
"I'm on my way to see my Grandma
who lives through the forest, near
the brook," Little Red Riding Hood
replied.
Then she realized how late she was and
quickly excused herself, rushing down
the path to her Grandma's house.
The wolf, in the meantime, took a
shortcut...
The wolf, a little out of breath from
running, arrived at Grandma's and
knocked lightly at the door.
"Oh thank goodness dear! Come
in, come in! I was worried sick that
something had happened to you in the
forest," said Grandma thinking that the
knock was her granddaughter.
The wolf let himself in. Poor Granny
did not have time to say another word,
before the wolf gobbled her up!
The wolf let out a satisfed burp, and
then poked through Granny's wardrobe
to fnd a nightgown that he liked. He
added a frilly sleeping cap, and for good
measure, dabbed some of Granny's
perfume behind his pointy ears.
A few minutes later, Red Riding Hood
knocked on the door. The wolf jumped
into bed and pulled the covers over
his nose. "Who is it?" he called in a
crackly voice.
"It's me, Little Red Riding Hood."
"Oh how lovely! Do come in, my dear,"
croaked the wolf.
When Little Red Riding Hood entered
the little cottage, she could scarcely
recognize her Grandmother.
"Grandmother! Your voice sounds so
odd. Is something the matter?" she
asked.
"Oh, I just have touch of a cold,"
squeaked the wolf adding a cough at
the end to prove the point.
"But Grandmother! What big ears you
have," said Little Red Riding Hood as
she edged closer to the bed.
"The better to hear you with, my dear,"
replied the wolf.
"But Grandmother! What big eyes you
have," said Little Red Riding Hood.
"The better to see you with, my dear,"
replied the wolf.

February Is Heart Month
Symptoms of Heart Disease
Coronary artery disease, heart attack --
each type of heart disease has different
symptoms, although many heart
problems have similar warning signs.
The symptoms you experience depend
on the type and severity of your heart
condition. Learn to recognize your
symptoms and the situations that cause
them. Call your doctor if you begin to
have new symptoms or if they become
more frequent or severe.
Symptoms Of Coronary
Artery Disease
The most common symptom of
coronary artery disease is angina, or
chest pain. Angina can be described
as a discomfort, heaviness, pressure,
aching, burning, fullness, squeezing, or
painful feeling in your chest. It can be
mistaken for indigestion or heartburn.
Angina is usually felt in the chest, but
may also be felt in the shoulders, arms,
neck, throat, jaw, or back.
Other symptoms of coronary artery
disease include:
-Shortness of breath
-Palpitations (irregular heart beats,
skipped beats, or a "fip-fop" feeling
in your chest)
-A faster heartbeat
-Weakness or dizziness
-Nausea
-Sweating
Symptoms of a Heart Attack
(Myocardial Infarction or MI)
Symptoms of a heart attack can include:
-Discomfort, pressure, heaviness, or
pain in the chest, arm, or below the
breastbone
-Discomfort radiating to the back, jaw,
throat, or arm
-Fullness, indigestion, or choking feeling
(may feel like heartburn)
-Sweating, nausea, vomiting, or dizziness
-Extreme weakness, anxiety, or shortness
of breath
-Rapid or irregular heartbeats
During a heart attack, symptoms
typically last 30 minutes or longer
and are not relieved by rest or oral
medications (medications taken by
mouth). Initial symptoms can start as
a mild discomfort that progresses to
signifcant pain.
Some people have a heart attack
without having any symptoms (a
"silent" MI). A silent MI can occur
among all people, though it occurs
more often among diabetics.
If you think you are having a heart
attack, DO NOT DELAY. Call
for emergency help (dial 911).
Immediate treatment of a heart attack
is very important to lessen the amount
of damage to your heart.
Symptoms of Arrhythmias
When symptoms of arrhythmias, or an
abnormal heart rhythm, are present,
they may include:
-Palpitations (a feeling of skipped
heart beats, futtering or "fip-fops,"
or feeling that your heart is "running
away").
-Pounding in your chest.
-Dizziness or feeling light-headed.
-Fainting.
-Shortness of breath.
-Chest discomfort.
-Weakness or fatigue (feeling very
tired).
Symptoms of Atrial
Fibrillation
Atrial fbrillation (AF) is a type of
arrhythmia. Most people with AF
experience one or more of the following
symptoms:
-Heart palpitations (a sudden pounding,
futtering, or racing feeling in the
heart).
-Lack of energy; tired.
-Dizziness (feeling faint or light-
headed).
-Chest discomfort (pain, pressure, or
discomfort in the chest).
-Shortness of breath (diffculty
breathing during activities of daily
living).
-Some patients with atrial fbrillation
have no symptoms. Sometimes these
episodes are briefer.
Symptoms of Heart Valve
Disease
Symptoms of h eart valve disease can
include:
-Shortness of breath and/or diffculty
catching your breath. You may notice
this most when you are active (doing
your normal daily activities) or when
you lie down fat in bed.
-Weakness or dizziness.
-Discomfort in your chest. You may
feel a pressure or weight in your chest
with activity or when going out in cold
air.
-Palpitations (this may feel like a
rapid heart rhythm, irregular heartbeat,
skipped beats, or a fip-fop feeling in
your chest).
If valve disease causes heart failure,
symptoms may include:
-Swelling of your ankles or feet.
Swelling may also occur in your
abdomen, which may cause you to feel
bloated.
-Quick weight gain (a weight gain
of two or three pounds in one day is
possible).
Symptoms of heart valve disease do not
always relate to the seriousness of your
condition. You may have no symptoms
at all and have severe valve disease,
requiring prompt treatment. Or, as with
mitral valve prolapse, you may have
severe symptoms, yet tests may show
minor valve disease.
CONTINUED NEXT WEEK
Symptoms of Heart Disease
Symptoms of Heart Failure
Symptoms of heart failure can include:
-Shortness of breath noted during
activity (most commonly) or at rest,
especially when you lie down fat in
bed.
-Cough that is productive of a white
mucus.
-Quick weight gain (a weight gain
of two or three pounds in one day is
possible).
-Swelling in ankles, legs, and abdomen.
-Dizziness.
-Fatigue and weakness.
-Rapid or irregular heartbeats.
-Other symptoms include nausea,
palpitations, and chest pain.
Like valve disease, heart failure
symptoms may not be related to how
weak your heart is. You may have many
symptoms, but your heart function may
be only mildly weakened. Or you may
have a severely damaged heart, with
little or no symptoms.

Amnesty Probes Detention
Centres
Amnesty International has started
investigating conditions at Australia's
immigration holding facilities, with
a visit to the remote Curtin Detention
Centre in the Kimberley.
A three-person delegation from the
international rights group spent
the weekend at Curtin, in Western
Australia's far northwest, before fying
to Perth.
The 12-day tour will take in detention
facilities in the WA capital, Christmas
Island, Wickham and Darwin.
Celebrity Chefs Feed 1000 In Need In
Cook-Off
LAMB, chicken and pork have been
thrown on sizzling hot plates in
Sydney, as celebrity chefs and top
CEOS cooked for 1000 people in need.
Long white tables lined Cathedral
Square in the heart of Sydney's CBD
with celebrity chefs such as George
Calombaris from MasterChef, Maggie
Beer, Bill Granger and Neil Perry
gathering for the inaugural CEO
CookOff.
Ronni Kahn, founder of Oz Harvest,
which is expected to salvage two
million meals from delis, restaurants
and corporate events this year, said
the night gave those receiving a meal
dignity.
"Most people see disadvantaged people
and turn their heads when they see
them on the streets because they don't
know what to do with them," Ms Kahn
told the reporter.
"I thought it was a marvelous
opportunity for those CEOs that never
get an opportunity to mingle and talk
with some real Aussies."
She said there were around 150,000 to
300,000 people who don't have a square
meal a day in Australia, which affected
children's ability to concentrate at school.
Judy, who has struggled with
homelessness and drug addiction since
she was a teenager, said she was getting
her life back on track.
"I've got a place to live, I've stopped
using and I've got a job," she said.
"I'm just happy to be here with my
brother, my husband, my sister and my
Mum and Dad."
Qantas CEO Alan Joyce said the event
sought to increase people's engagement
with one of our major social issues.
Chef Neil Perry said OzHarvest was
"the most gorgeous idea".
"You are taking something that's going
to be thrown in the bin, utilising it
and bringing it to charities to feed the
homeless.
"They can then utilise money to spend
on frontline staff and grow the amount
of people they can help."
The event had raised more than
$840,000 for OzHarvest and Mission

Full-Body Scans Rolled Out At
All Australian International
Airports After Trial
Passengers at airports across Australia will be forced to undergo
full-body scans or be banned from fying under new laws to be
introduced into Federal Parliament this week.
In a radical $28 million security
overhaul, the scanners will be installed
at all international airports from July and
follows trials at Sydney and Melbourne
in August and September last year.
The Government is touting the technology
as the most advanced available, with the
equipment able to detect metallic and
non-metallic items beneath clothing.
It's also keen to allay concerns raised
on travel online forums that passengers
would appear nude on security screens
as they had when similar scanners were
introduced at US airports.
The technology will show passengers
on a screen as stick fgures of neither
sex.
The system has approval from the
Privacy Commission.
The images will also be discarded after
each passenger has been cleared.
The proposed Aviation Security
Amendment (Screening) Bill 2012 will
make it mandatory for any passenger
selected to participate in undergoing a
body scan.
The "no scan, no fy" amendment
closes a loophole in the legislation,
which allows passengers to request
a pat-down instead of having to pass
through a metal detector.
Transport Minister Anthony Albanese
said mandatory body scans were
necessary to ensure the safety of airports.
"I think the public understands that we
live in a world where there are threats
to our security and experience shows
they want the peace of mind that comes
with knowing government is doing all
it can," he said.
The Government has compared the
strength of the radio waves emitted
from the body scanners as the same
as those from a regular mobile phone
used several meters away.
Only passengers with serious medical
conditions will be exempted from a scan.
More than 23,000 passengers took part
in the body scanning trials from August
2-19 in Sydney and September 5-30 in
Melbourne.
The scanners will be rolled out at
eight international gateway airports
in Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Gold
Coast, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney.
The Government has enlisted the same
company, L-3 Communications, used in
the US to apply the scanners.
Queensland Could Face $1B
Flood Compo Suit
The Queensland government is facing a possible food
compensation claim for more than $1 billion.
Maurice Blackburn lawyers are
investigating a possible class action
against the government over claims
that Wivenhoe Dam was mismanaged
before last year's foods, compounding
the disaster.
Australia's largest litigation funder,
IMF, said on Monday it would carry
out its own investigations into the
causes of last year's foods, with a view
to pursuing a class action.
"If suffcient food victims wish to
take collective action, IMF will fund
the investigation and any viable legal
proceedings," IMF executive director
John Walker told reporters in Brisbane.
The Queensland government is the owner
and operator of Wivenhoe Dam through
SEQWater, which engaged SunWater to
manage the dam during foods.
The state's foods inquiry has reopened
hearings to examine claims Wivenhoe
dam engineers botched water releases,
and breached the dam's operating
manual, causing unnecessary fooding
in urban areas.
Mr Walker said IMF's parallel
investigation would specifcally look
at grounds for legal action.
"The current inquiry, paid for by the
state of Queensland, is not designed
to identify all the detail about what
the Wivenhoe Dam operators ought to
have done throughout the January 2011
food event, whether their conduct
breached any legal standards and if
so, who downstream from the dam
suffered compensable loss," he said.
Maurice Blackburn managing principal
Peter Koutsoukis said the class action
would probably seek compensation in
excess of $1 billion.
"Areas of investigation will include
whether the State of Queensland,
SEQWater, SunWater or the food
operations engineers breached any
duty of care to people living below
the dam, including whether engineers
could have released greater amounts of
water earlier in the food event, thereby
reducing peak release rates and peak
food levels," he said.
Amnesty said its delegation, which
includes refugee expert Graham
Thom, would talk to detained and
freed asylum seekers, immigration
offcials and holding centre staff as
part of a review into community-based
processing compared to the current
system of mandatory detention.
The group's fndings, including case
studies, will be released immediately
after the tour on February 16, with a
more comprehensive report on detention
centre conditions due later in the year.

Emaet Is Not A Copy Of What
Happens In Vegas?: Imran, Kareena
Actors Imran Khan and Kareena
Kapoor, who are starring together in Ek
Main Aur Ekk Tu, have slammed the
reports that their latest movie is a copy
of What Happens In Vegas? They say
that they are completely two different
flms and only similarity between them
is that they have been shot in Vegas.
In a recent interview Imran Khan got
irked by the question on whether it
is copy of What Happens In Vegas?
Anyone who has seen What Happens
In Vegas? would not ask this question.
They are two completely different
flms. That flm is about a couple
winning a lottery and then having to
stay together, the media quotes Imran
as saying.
Imran Khan added, Our flm is about a
girl showing a guy what he is missing in
life. There is no conning, no jackpot and
no court order. The similarity begins
and ends with the fact that it's been
flmed in Vegas, which is also the theme
of movies like The Hangover, Two to
Tango and certain episodes of Friends.
Meanwhile Kareena Kapoor also
reiterated the fact that Ek Main Aur
Ekk Tu is completely an original
movie. Since both flms have been shot
in the same city, it is very convenient
for people to say that it's a copy of
What Happens in Vegas? the media
quotes the actress as saying.
However, Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu is a
romantic comedy written and directed
by Shakun Batra. The story revolves
around jobless Rahul Kapoor and
hairstylist Riana Braganza, who
wake up to discover that they have
got married following a night of
debauchery. What happens when they
decide to get the marriage annulled is
an interesting topic of the flm, which
is scheduled to release today, February

Jackie Shroff Makes Cameo
Appearance For Rajinikanth
On Wednesday, when Jaggu Dadda,
aka Jackie Shroff, turned 55 he
was in Chennai with the legendary
Rajinikanth, to make a cameo
appearance in legendary Tamil
actor's daughter Soundarya's flm
Kochadaiyyan.
Says Jackie warmly, "Rajini-ji's
daughter Soundarya is directing this
flm with her Dad in the lead. So
sweet! She asked me to make a cameo
appearance in the flm with her father.
I immediately few down to Chennai.
When it comes anything to do with
Rajinikanth one doesn't ask questions.
One just does the needful."
Jackie and Rajini go back a long
way.
Speaking from Chennai, Jackie
recalled, "He was one of the few
people at my wedding with Ayesha
when we got married in 1989. Rajiniji
and I were shooting for Subhash Ghai's
Uttar Dakshin in which he played my
younger brother; my stepbrother. It was
so much fun. I was the North Indian; he
was my South Indian brother. During
the lunch break Ayesha and I decided
to get married. Just the two of us and
those close to us. There was Rajini-ji,
Subhash Ghai, Dimple, Anupam Kher
and a few of my other friends, that's it.
So you see, I've very fond memories of
Rajinikanth and would never say no to
anything to do with him or his family."
Jackie says it's an interesting cameo
which Soundarya insisted only he could
play. "I believe the flm is in Tamil, Telugu
and Hindi. But even if it was in Swahili,
I'd run and do it for Rajinikanth."
Jackie rushed to Chennai after barely
a few hours of sleep. "My birthday is
generally a very quiet affair. As always
my rakhi-sister Anna Singh came home.
Then we went to Riteish and Genelia's
Sangeet. That's where I brought in my
birthday. I few into Chennai for Rajini-
ji's flm early next morning. I can't think
of a better way to spend my birthday."
Says the actor candidly, "Honestly
a birthday is no big deal. I am just
beginning to understand life. My frst
40 years went into growing up. Now
I am fnally getting to know what this
whole business of living is all about."

Bollywood Veteran Anupam Kher: It's A Nice Journey
From a homeless boy to acting
alongside Robert De Niro and Bradley
Cooper, Bollywood veteran Anupam
Kher gets candid on life, failure and
more.
For Bollywood actor Anupam Kher,
it took a meeting with Hollywood
veteran Robert De Niro to realise that
he hadn't done too badly in life. From a
homeless boy, who slept in a Mumbai
railway platform before getting a
career break, to sharing the silver
screen with the likes of Robert De Niro
and Bradley Cooper, Kher's journey
has ticked every box in the proverbial
rags-to-riches tale.
"I had tears in my eyes and he [De Niro]
was like - what happened?' But, I was
like no, no - you won't understand',"
said Kher in an interview with tabloid!
Even our meeting place - on the 42nd
foor of Emirates Towers in Dubai with
foor-to-ceiling glass windows and a
bird's eye view of the Dubai skyline -
was a nod to the commanding position
he held over Indian cinema.
After having acted in over 450 flms and
100 plays, this versatile 56-year-old
actor has experimented with all kinds
of roles. To put it simply, he can play
the cool, hip father (Dilwale Dulhaniya
Le Jayenge) or a heartbroken parent
grappling with the death of his son
(his debut Saraansh) or a righteous cop
(A Wednesday) and a lecherous uncle
(ChaalBaaz) with admirable ease.
"All my life my reference point
was that small-time boy and not the
450-flm-old actor. So I thought to
myself it's a nice journey. From that
homeless boy to Robert De Niro - it
was a beautiful moment. And after
seeing my performance, he said I
was terrifc - that was like an Oscar
or the biggest acting award given to
me," said Kher, who spent 33 days in
Philadelphia shooting for the flm The
Silver Linings Playbook.
Tipped to release in October this year,
Kher plays Dr Patel, the therapist to
Cooper who is coping with a mental
illness. But he's quick to add that his
role will not be reduced to that token
Indian man speaking in an exaggerated
accent in a Hollywood flm. When
asked if he would fare better than Anil
Kapoor's blink-and-miss cameo in spy
series Mission: Impossible - Ghost
Protocol series, he skirted it by saying
that every Indian would be proud of his
role.
No accent coach
"It is not a caricature or a stock
character. I speak like the way I am
speaking to you - no accent coach etc,"
said Kher, who has acted in several
international ventures, including Bride
And Prejudice, Bend It Like Beckham
and a cameo in Woody Allen's You
Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger. Kher,
who has an agent in London, bagged
The Silver Linings Playbook directed
by David O Russell of The Fighters
fame after several auditions done over
Skype and recorded tapes.
"When I do flm abroad it is to prove
a point to myself as an actor. I want to
prove that we are equally talented if not
more. The only thing is that our system
is not as professional as it should be,"
said Kher in a matter-of-fact tone. But
he doesn't let the negatives bog him
down. Moving with the times and
cultivating the right attitude is what
propels him ahead. Enter his self-help
book The Best Thing About You Is
You.
"It's not a book on how to live or how
to be successful or how to be rich. It is
a book about how to be yourself. The
best thing that has happened to you is
you and nobody knows you better than
you," said Kher, who drew heavily on
his personal experiences while writing
the book. He took a year to put it all
together.
"It's a tribute to my optimism When
you read the book you will feel like
somebody is talking to you in the
kitchen, in your drawing room or in
your balcony. It is with reference to
what I have learnt in my life," said
Kher.
Spurred by a series of bad decisions
from 2003 to 2005, the actor decided to
stage a play on his failures. The book
took off after the resounding success of
this play.
"I didn't want to continue to do bad
movies - though I own them and I
am proud of each one of them. And,
strangely, a play about my failures is
the most successful thing I have done.
It's brilliantly beautiful."

At The Movies
Chico & Rita (PG) * * * * *

Animated flms have come of
age over the last decade and Hollywood
no longer has a monopoly on quality or
originality. Set your sights to romantic
and hot-blooded Cuba to take in the
sights and sounds of Chico & Rita, a
dazzling display of love and lust now
playing for four special showings at
the Van City Vancouver Film Festival
Theatre. Treat your special someone to
a memorable Valentines Day weekend
by taking in this highly heralded gem
from Spain thats this nations entry for
Oscar gold come this February.
All the glamour and intrigue
of 1940s Cuba unfolds in this smartly
written visually stunning treat from
joint directors Fernando Trueba and
Javier Mariscal. Boldly they go into
unchartered territory in this tropical
paradise as we chart the troubled lives
of a lowly piano player on the rise and
an equally inexperienced singer trying
to earn a living. Life in those days was
tough and struggle meant everything
for both Chico and Rita. Each plays
the rounds at various night clubs in
Havana until one day they meet. Why
it may be love at frst sight for the guy
the woman isnt so sure.
What Chico and his buddy
need is a singer to enhance their act and
not before long he falls head over heels
for this Latin lovely. Just when you
think the feeling may be mutual scores
of problems develop between them,
not the least of which being outside
pursuers. Hot and cold goes their
relationship and this strain sees them
grow apart. Ritas dreams take her
to New York and then Chico follows
suit. In the Big Apple each becomes
engulfed in more of a convoluted
romantic relationship which sees their
true feelings put to the ultimate test.
Full of life Chico & Rita
sizzles with great songs, beautiful
choreography and truly memorable
characters. Limara Meneses sings up a
storm as the sultry chanteuse who will
have you in the palm of her hands while
Eman xor Ona embodies that puppy
dog droopy eyed feeling of a guy lost
in love like a deer in the headlights.
Outside characters that infuence our
lovebirds lives include evil managers
and greedy lovers wanting to take
advantage of the naivety of both these
young performers.
Chico & Rita has a great look
to it and it feels oh so real. Adult in
tone, it deftly looks at the carnal
appetites of two people embroiled
in struggle in the world of music.
Nostalgia grips the screen as you cant

Beyonce, Jay-Z Move to
Trademark "Blue Ivy"
She's already a mogul, this one.
Blue Ivy, Beyonce and Jay-Z's baby's
name, may soon be trademarked
as well. It does have instant brand
recognition, and her business-savvy
folks are all over that.
Blue Ivy Carter's parents fled an
application with the U.S. Patent and
Trademark Offce protecting the little
girl's name for possible use on a future
line of baby goods.
Why the rush? There was no time to
waste, apparently.
Two Blue Ivy wannabe entrepreneurs
already had applications shot down,
and no matter how many White House
visits Bey and Jay had enjoyed, they'd
still have to go through the offce's
frst-come, frst-served process like
everyone else.
However, a surge in applications is
usual when a new name or phrase
explodes into the lexicon, and because
it's the offce's job to sort things
out, they try to anticipate trends,
subsequently fast-tracking applications
inspired by names in the news.
Still, one Blue Ivy earned the
trademark before Beyonce was even
pregnant: The Blue Ivy clothing store
in Wisconsin got unknowingly lucky in
early 2011.
They can be expecting a fat check in
the near future.

14 Airports To Get New Air
Surveillance Technology
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is to introduce a new radar-
based air surveillance system at 14 airports across the country for
better control of aircraft in fight, an offcial said.
"The new Automatic Dependent
Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B)
system would facilitate civilian aircraft
in self-communicating with airports
about their identity, speed and altitude,"
AAI director Sudhamay Maiti said.
"The new system is likely to be
commissioned in six to seven of a
total of 14 airports across India by the
middle of this year and in the remaining
airports by this year-end," he added.
According to the offcial, unlike the
existing radar-based ground-to-air
surveillance system on airports, the
comparatively cheaper ADS-B system
has three components -- an ADS-B
transponder in the aircraft, an antenna
to get frequency from the aircraft
transponder and a receiver at the Air
Traffc Control (ATC).
"The new technology enables ATCs
at airports to get complete situational
awareness of ADS-B compatible
aircraft, which could even be 300 miles
away," Maiti said.
The ADS-B system would cover
much wider areas than the present
surveillance system.
"The existing air surveillance system
has certain limitations when it comes
to airspace management," Maiti said,
adding that safety aspects would also
get a major boost once the new system
is introduced.
The AAI offcial said that during the
past few years, air traffc has increased
in most of the airports in India with
more domestic and foreign fights
using Indian airspace and airports.
"Voice communication between the
fights and the ATCs would be more
easy and transparent with the new
ADS-B system," Maiti added.
The administrative as well as technical
process has already started to install
the new system at 14 airports: Agartala,
Imphal, Shimla, Jaipur, Bhopal,
Patna, Bhubaneswar, Lucknow,
Amritsar, Varanasi, Port Blair, Nagpur,
Ahmedabad and Calicut.
The AAI offcial said that around Rs.4
crore would be spent at each of the
airports to install the new system.
Meanwhile, the AAI has begun
preliminary work to upgrade Agartala
airport to an international airport to boost
the northeastern region's connectivity
with Southeast Asian countries.
"AAI has taken up an ambitious Rs.80
crore project to gradually develop
Agartala airport to international
standards. Also, a modern Air Traffc
Control tower is being set up at a cost
of Rs.10 crore," said another AAI
offcial.
On an average, 32-33 aircraft operate
every day through Agartala airport,
connecting Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati,
Imphal, Silchar and the southern states.
"The decision to upgrade the Agartala
airport was taken as part of the India's
'Look East' policy," the offcial added.
"As part of the plan, the terminal
building, ATC tower, runway and other
necessary infrastructure would be
expanded and further strengthened,"
he said.
A Tripura government offcial said
the AAI has sought 200 acres of land
to build additional infrastructure.
"However, there is scarcity of land in
the existing airport area," he said.

Most Canadians Support Return Of Death Penalty, Poll Finds
A half-century has passed since the last
person in Canada was executed, but
a recent public opinion poll suggests
Canadians are warming to the idea of a
return to capital punishment.
The survey conducted by Angus Reid
Public Opinion in partnership with the
Toronto Star found that 63 per cent of
the 1,002 Canadians surveyed across
the country believe the death penalty is
sometimes appropriate. Sixty-one per
cent said capital punishment, which
was abolished in Canada in 1976, is
warranted for murder.
I think people might be warming to
the idea of having it as an option on the
table, if anything just as a deterrent,
said Jaideep Mukerji of Angus Reid.
But Mukerji said the poll also reveals
that it is not a black and white issue
for many Canadians. Given the choice
of supporting the death penalty or life
imprisonment, 50 per cent chose the
latter, the survey found.
We ask the question in two ways do
you support or oppose the death penalty
and in that context people really do
support it, he said. But when the option
of life imprisonment is introduced as an
option for those convicted of murder,
50 per cent actually say they would
prefer life in prison.
The debate over restoring the death
penalty took on new life last week
when Conservative Senator Pierre
Hugues-Boisvenu suggested serial
murderers should be given a rope to
hang themselves in prison. In June
2002, the senators daughter Julie
was kidnapped, raped and murdered.
Boisvenu later withdraw his remark.
The Angus Reid online survey found
that Canadians views on the death
penalty differ greatly according to
political allegiance and region. The
poll was conducted Feb. 2 and 3 with a
margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 per
cent, 19 times out of 20.
In British Columbia and Alberta, about
seven in 10 support the return of the
death penalty; six in 10 Ontarians, or
62 per cent, agree.
The most opposition was in Quebec,
with about 45 per cent against the
return of capital punishment. Some 32
per cent in Ontario and 24 per cent in
British Columbia were also opposed.
These respondents (about 75 per
cent) are primarily concerned over the
possibility of wrongful convictions
leading to executions, but most (54 per
cent) also feel that even if a convicted
murderer has taken a life it is wrong
to take the murderers own life as
punishment, the survey results stated.
The poll found that respondents
who voted Conservative in the 2011
federal election were more likely to
regard the death penalty as always
or sometimes appropriate while the
majority of those who vote Liberal,
Bloc Qubcois or Green were opposed
to the return of the death penalty. NDP
supporters were divided on the question.
Last year, Angus Reid Public Opinion
asked similar questions in the United
States and Britain and found that
the majority of respondents in both
countries supported the continuation or
the return of the death penalty.
Canadian PM Names Dashan As Canada's
Goodwill Ambassador To China
Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper named Mark Rowswell,
a famous Canadian comedian in China whose stage name is
Dashan, as Canada's Goodwill Ambassador to China.
According to a press release from
the Prime Minister's Offce, Harper,
who is currently on an offcial visit to
China, said that Rowswell has used his
"extraordinary talents" for many years
to "build bridges of understanding
between Canada and China".
"I am pleased to name this highly
recognized and respected individual
as Canada's Goodwill Ambassador to
China," said the Prime Minister.
Rowswell was born in Canada in 1965.
He began studying Chinese in the
mid-1980s while he was attending the
University of Toronto, and continued
his study in China's Beijing University.
During his study in China, he was keen
on traditional Chinese performing arts.
His stage name Dashan came from
a character he played in a comedic
skit on national television during the
CCTV New Year's Gala in 1989. His
fuent Chinese and performance in
the skit made him a national stardom
overnight.
Rowswell has become a cultural icon
and celebrity in China over the past 20
years, the release said.
Today, Rowswell is involved in a wide
variety of activities, from hosting
television programs and live events,
to dramatic acting, public speaking,
publishing, education, and celebrity
endorsement.
In December 2006, Rowswell became a
Member of the Order of Canada for his
work in uniting Canadian and Chinese
Peoples through laughter, understanding
and goodwill. He served as Team Attache
for the Canadian Oylmpic Committee at
the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing,
and being appointed as Canada's

B.C. Man Wins $16M Lottery
Steve Murphy, 52, says he'll probably retire and does appear now
able to afford to.
Steve Murphy says he couldnt believe
his eyes when he checked his Lotto
Max ticket last Sunday at the Food
Basket store in Atlin, B.C.
So, he took the ticket to the cashier for
further verifcation.
"I thought it was only about $16,000 at
frst," Murphy recalled in an interview
Tuesday. "There was a lot of sixes in there.
It was quite an ominous little ticket."
Indeed: it was worth $16.6 million.
And then some.
"Sixteen million, six hundred and
sixty-six thousand and six hundred
and sixty-six dollars," Murphy said,
recalling how he watched the numbers
roll out as Food Basket clerk Leah
Neilson ran the ticket through the main
terminal at her cash register.
"It's almost surreal, is this really
happening," he said. "The whole town
knew in about ten minutes."
Murphy's jackpot represents a third of
the $50-million prize for last Friday's
draw. Two residents of Quebec won the
other two-thirds.
The 52-year-old assistant mine
manager at the Tulsequah Chief mine
project said he'll likely be retiring, but
what the future has in store beyond a
little travel he's not sure.
He'll probably buy or build his own
house in Atlin, a town of 500 people
near the Yukon border, about 1300
kilometers northwest of Vancouver.
Murphy also plans to help the
community's assisted living
organization because it helped his
family when his mom passed away in
2010, he said.

Canada's largest airlines have all
launched all-inclusive pricing efforts
that make it easier for passengers to
determine the actual cost of fying.
Air Canada began on Wednesday to
advertise prices that show the fnal
cost of a ticket by combining the extra
charges that have been left out in the
past.
Porter Airlines, which fies regional
planes mainly from its base at Toronto
City Centre airport, said it would begin
to advertise the total cost of a fight on
Friday.
They join WestJet Airlines (TSX:WJA)
which began to advertise all-in fares in
January.
The new pricing structure will factor
in all of the fees, surcharges and taxes
that customers wind up paying, which
in some cases can virtually double the
posted price of airline tickets.
The extra amounts include Nav Canada
fees, airport improvement charges, fuel
surcharges, insurance and air security
charges.
Consumers also have to add taxes
-- GST or Harmonized Sales Tax,
and possibly sales tax or other taxes
depending on the province or country.
Canada's largest carrier (TSX:AC.B)
launched its new all-in fare policy as
it unveiled a seat sale marking its 75th
anniversary.
"Our all-in price advertising initiative is
a response to our customers' increased
desire for transparency and simplicity
when shopping for air fares," said Air
Canada marketing vice-president Craig
Landry.
Air Canada's new all-in price will
be displayed on its website, email
specials, online and print advertising.
Large newspaper ads on Wednesday,
for example, showed a fight from
Montreal to London costing $887, with
the base fare starting at $244 and $643
in additional charges.
Final prices may vary by routing and
individual options such as baggage
fees.
The changes come ahead of laws
requiring more honest airfare ads
expected later this year.
Robert Kokonis, president of airline
consulting frm AirTrav Inc., said the
carriers didn't want to wait until the
Christmas deadline.
"I think they wanted to get it over with
and also position themselves in front of
the consumers' eyes as doing the right
thing," he said in an interview.
Calgary-based WestJet changed its
print advertising in January, but
bookings on its website and that of Air
Canada don't at frst glance show all-in
prices.
"We are still working out some
technical details to be able to display
all-in pricing within our booking
engine, which we expect will happen
later this year," said spokesman Robert
Palmer.
Passengers initially see only the base
fare when choosing fight times. But they
can see the all-in price and breakdown
of extra charges by clicking the price
associated with individual fights.
Unlike the other carriers, Porter
will only show one price without
highlighting fees and taxes separately,
said President Robert Deluce.
"We've been able to change what
passengers expect from an airline
Canada's Airlines Move To All-In Ad Pricing
by introducing standard premium
amenities and affordable fights. Now,
we're extending this experience to the
booking process, making it easy to
immediately understand how much a
fight costs by showing one number."
Air Transat, which fies to the
Caribbean, Mexico, Europe and the
Mediterranean, has traditionally
included all-in fares for its fights and
package holiday and advocated such
pricing for years.
"It's interesting to see the change of
heart of those who just very recently
saw the light," Transat spokeswoman
Debbie Cabana wrote in an email.
The advertising changes are coming
after the Conservative government
announced in December new rules
that will require Canadian airlines
to include all fees and taxes in their
advertised prices.
The Canadian Transportation Agency
is consulting various stakeholders
before drafting new regulations. They
will need to fgure out how the rules
can be crafted so Canadian airlines are
not put at a disadvantage
B.C. Sees To Charging U.S.
Drivers Using $3.3B Toll Bridge
Government looking for contractor to see that U.S. drivers pay up
The B.C. government plans to hire a
private contractor to ensure that U.S.
drivers pay the tolls on the new Port
Mann Bridge.
Its expected that the estimated 500,000
American visitors who cross the bridge
every year in at least one direction
could bring in more than $1.5 million
a year.
Tolls are expected to be $3 each
way across the $3.3-billion bridge,
scheduled to open in December.
"In the event that we have visitors from
the U.S., who have crossed a number
of times, have an outstanding toll and
haven't paid yet, then we're able to
work with a company in the United
States that would provide us with the
contact information for those drivers,"
said Max Logan, of the Transportation
Investment Corp.
Logan said government is now looking
for companies that can track those
drivers down through photos of their
license plates.
But will an invoice in the mail be
enough to make U.S. drivers pay?
Logan said experience shows that most
will honour the bill.
"About 75 per cent of people who
receive an invoice letting them know
that they owe some money do pay," he
said.
Offcials expect to have the U.S. billing
system in place by the time the bridge
opens.
New Liquor License Rules For B.C
Venues
The provincial government has
announced immediate changes to
liquor licenses, to make them more
fexible for venues that host live events.
It means they can show movies or
broadcast pay-per-view programs
outside the hours outlined in their
liquor license.
License holders wont be permitted
to serve liquor during the screening
of movies. This comes after the high-
profle fght between the Rio Theatre
and the NDP for the rules to be eased.
The East Vancouver cinema had to stop
showing flms recently over a condition
in its new liquor license.
However, Rio Theatre owner Corrine
Lea says the new liquor license
restrictions are still not practical,
despite the increased fexibility. She
says the liquor control board is still
demanding a set schedule, which just
doesnt work, since movie distributors,
touring bands, and sports teams decide
on their dates, not the venue owner.
"Movies are released when they are
released and you have to play them on
the day that distributors dictate, bands
tour according to their schedule."
Lea says there was little to no
consultation about these changes, but
shes glad the province is moving in
the right direction.
For her part, NDP MLA Jenny Kwan
says despite the challenges, shes glad
Minister Rich Coleman has made some
changes.
"The Minister just had this fle, and
it may be case where he's trying to
move forward to address the concerns
because there was a lot of urgency
around bringing forward the necessary
change so that the Rio could stay in
business."
Cops Bust 10 Car Thieves At Once In Burnaby
It was not a good day to be a car thief
in Burnaby on Tuesday. The RCMP
Integrated Auto Crime Team arrested
10 people in three separate cars.
The team's Sergeant Gord Elias says
the youngest suspect was just 15-years-
old. "We believe the group all knew
each other. Some people were stealing
the cars and other people decided to go
along for the joyride."
He explains offcers were in the area
of Sprott Street and Norland Avenue
checking things out following a spike
in car thefts in the neighbourhood. All
the arrests were made by 10:30 a.m.
"Sure enough, two juvenile suspects
got into one of the cars and drove away
and we took up surveillance and we
arrested them.
And no sooner were they arrested and
another Honda Civic went mobile with
three adults in it."
During that arrest a stolen Nissan
Sentra with fve teens inside drove
right by them. "Seven of the 10 have
been charged with possession of stolen
property and some drugs were found."

Visiting Mumbai (Bombay) India
Dhobi Ghat
It comes across as a fascinating place,
a huge human-powered mass laundry,
where 100s of washermen (called
"Dhobis" in Hindi) wash clothes in
large concrete wash pens and dry them
under an open sky. Contrary to what
tourists may be given to believe by
Tour-guides (so as to add colour and
"masala" to their tours), the "Dhobis"
of this "Ghat" are not involved
in doing the laundry of Mumbai
homes and families. In fact, they are
mostly engaged in washing clothes
for large, lower-market commercial
organisations like restaurants, or hotels
or guest-houses located in the vicinity.
Indian families mostly use their
washing-machines nowadays for their
laundry while decades ago, they would
hire maids to hand-wash the clothes.
The "Dhobi Ghat" (open-air manually-
operated laundry) is a surviving relic
of Mumbai's past. For the Dhobis,
it's generally a hereditary profession,
with most of the washermen's families
working here for last 2 or maybe 3
generations, their technique having
remained virtually the same. The soiled
clothes are frst soaked in boiling water
with Caustic Soda and then "fogged"
on a slab to get physically rid them of
dirt and stains etc.
After drying them in the open, clothes
are ironed with age old charcoal presses
with heavy wooden handles. It's a great
photo opportunity if nothing else, you
can get a view from the bridge next
to the Mahalaxmi station. Most of the
local people fnd it rather amusing that
an activity as mundane as washing
arouses such curiosity in the tourists.
. This earns them 100 rupees ($2.40)
per day each.
Location: Next to Mahalaxmi railway
station (the 6th station on the Western
Line from Churchgate), central
Mumbai. Walk out of the station and
turn left on the bridge.
Mahalaxmi Temple
This temple is situated very close
to the sea off Mahalaxmi. This
temple has three beautiful images
of Hindu goddesses, Mahalakshmi,
Mahasaraswati and Mahakali which
are made of gold. During Navaratri
festival, devoted Hindus throng this
temple in great numbers to offer
coconut, fowers and sweets to the
goddesses.
Chowpatty Beach
& Juhu Beach
Chowpatty beach is situated on Marine
Drive. This beach is well-known for its
stalls selling "Bhel-Puri and Pani -Puri
chat" a favourite fast food among the
Mumbaites and visitors to the city.
Juhu Beach is the most popular beach
in Mumbai which is 30 kms away from
the heart of Mumbai. It is a long stretch
of sandy beach from Santacruz to Vile-
Parle. This is a very popular beach for
picnic.
Both these beaches are crowded on
week-ends.
Kamala Nehru Park
& Hanging Gardens
The giant Old woman's shoe in the
Kamala Nehru Park is very popular
with children to play in. One gets a
panoramic view of parts of the city
from these parks situated at the height
of Malabar Hill. When seen at night,
the view of street lights of Marine
Drive resemble a dazzling bejeweled
"Queen's Necklace". At sunset, the
waterfall and fountains in the park
are lit with colorful lights which are
worth seeing. The Hanging Gardens
surrounded by beautiful fower beds
and lush green lawns are very popular
as picnic spots.
Mount Mary Church
This is one of most prominent and
splendid churches in Mumbai, situated
in Bandra (West). During the month of
September a week long fair is held which
is attended by the people of all religion.
Mahalaxmi Race Course
Situated in Mahalaxmi, this racecourse
is one of the best in the world. The
racing season is for six months from
October to April. It attracts huge
crowds for heavy betting.
Nehru Planetarium
and Science Centre
This Science Centre is named after
Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India's frst
Prime-Minister. It is situated in Worli.
It has a computer laboratory, mobile
science exhibition units, a heritage
hall, an auditorium, infatable dome
planetarium, science library and a
children's science park.
The sky-show at the planetarium is
very interesting with its narration,
sound effects and slide projections
which combine entertainment with
education. It has a library containing a
large collection of books on astronomy,
astrophysics and space sciences.
Haji Ali Mosque
The imposing Haji Ali is both a
mosque and tomb. It was built in 1431
by wealthy Muslim merchant and saint
Haji Ali, who was inspired to change
the course of his life after going to
Mecca. It also contains his body.
Situated in the middle of the ocean, Haji
Ali is only accessible during low tide
from a narrow, 500 yard long walkway.
On Thursdays and Fridays tens of
thousands of pilgrims fock there to
receive blessings from the dead saint.
If you need to pass some time until the
tide lowers enough, there's a shopping
center on the opposite side of the road.
Location: Central Mumbai, just off the
coast of Worli, not far from Mahalaxmi
railway station.
Taraporewala Aquarium
Situated on the Marine Drive, this
aquarium has fsh in varying shapes,
sizes and colour. It's a delight for
children as well as grown-ups.
The Prince of Wales
Museum
This museum stands not too far from
the Gateway of India. It has a priceless
collection of art, sculpture, china and
other antics. Carefully preserved, this mid-
Victorian Gothic style building built in
1904 with beautiful gardens surrounding
it, is worth visiting in Mumbai.
Victoria Gardens
(Veermata Jeejabai
Bhonsle Udyan)
These botanical and zoological
gardens have an interesting collection
of fora and fauna. Apart from these, it
also has a beautiful gateway, an arched
architectural screen and a museum
building in the Greco-Roman Style. A

Survey Reveals B.C. Car Buyers Consider Cost Before Safety
A recent Ipsos Reid survey conducted
on behalf of ICBC found that only 32 per
cent of car buyers in B.C. named safety
as one of their top three considerations
when deciding which vehicle to buy,
while 48 per cent named price and 42
per cent named fuel effciency.
The survey further revealed that most
car buyers primarily take standard
safety features into consideration, rather
than newer cutting edge technologies.
When asked which safety features are
most important when buying a vehicle,
57 per cent said airbags, 23 per cent
said anti-lock brakes (ABS), 18 per
cent said brakes in general and 10 per
cent said various seatbelt features.
While all of these are important
safety features, there are many newer
technologies that also help reduce
crashes and injuries, such as electronic
stability control (ESC). Only one per
cent of respondents named ESC as an
important safety feature. Yet, according
to a study by the Insurance Institute of
Highway Safety, ESC reduced the risk
of being involved in a single-vehicle
fatal crash by 49 per cent.
With more than half a million vehicles
sold each year in B.C., car buyers have
a wide selection of makes, models and
age ranges to choose from. Although
most vehicles are equipped with basic
safety features, car buyers could likely
get a lot more protection while still
staying within their budget if they
made safety a higher priority. Many
key safety features are readily available
even on used vehicles which make up
the majority of vehicle purchases in
B.C.
Although safety features are important,
safe driving ultimately comes down
to making smart decisions regardless
of your vehicle. Even the best safety
technology cannot override a vehicle's
physical limits. If you push your
vehicle's handling too far, you can still
be involved in a serious crash.
ICBC recommends looking for the
following key safety features:
Warning systems: While only identifed
as an important feature by two per cent
of respondents, lane departure and
forward crash systems provide audio
and visual cues, which may include
fashing lights and alarms, informing
the driver of potential risks to help
avoid a crash. These warning systems
are a new developing technology that
is mostly available on higher-end
vehicles but is also now available as an
after-market add-on.
Active head restraints: Although
surprisingly only identifed by one per
cent of respondents as an important
safety feature, a well-designed head
restraint adjusted at the proper height
reduces injuries by 24 to 44 per cent.
They also signifcantly reduce the risk
of soft-tissue neck and back injuries
during a crash. Some vehicles even
come with active head restraints
these automatically adjust to better
protect the neck and head in a collision.
Anti-lock brakes: Driving on wet, icy
or wintery roads is never easy but anti-
lock brakes (ABS) can help give you
more control by preventing the wheels
from locking, allowing you to maintain
steering ability and avoid skidding
while braking.
Electronic stability control (ESC):
ESC is mandatory in all 2012 vehicles
manufactured after September 1, 2011
and is also available in many used
vehicles manufactured since 2006.
ESC helps drivers maintain control of
their vehicle, especially on slippery
roads or in an emergency situation,
such as swerving or braking to avoid
an obstacle. ESC works by selectively
applying the vehicles brakes and/or
reduces the engines power to keep
it moving in the drivers intended
direction, preventing loss of control.
ESC works best at reducing the risk
of a vehicle rollover, particularly with
SUVs, some vans and pick-up trucks.
Three-point seatbelts: Seatbelts
remain the most important safety
device in a vehicle and have improved
in performance over the years.
Seatbelts actually vary in design and
effectiveness look for three-point
or harness seatbelts in all positions.
Height-adjustable belts ensure the
seatbelt fts each passenger correctly.
Pretensioners retract the belt to remove
excess slack in a crash and reduce the
severity of injuries.
New airbag technology: Airbags
have also evolved and improved over
the years, yet only one per cent of
respondents identifed them as an
important safety feature. Advanced
front airbags have sensors that actually
measure the occupants size, seat
position and crash severity to determine
the infation levels for the driver and
passenger all of which increases
safety and reduces injury. Curtain side
airbags are also highly-recommended
as they protect all passengers from side
collisions which can often result in
serious injuries or worse. They can also
help reduce the chances of ejection
during a rollover.
ICBC wants to help drivers make
informed decisions about safety
features and help them purchase the
safest vehicle they can afford.
Visit icbc.com to learn more about
safety features, and use the printable
safer vehicle comparison checklist to
easily compare vehicle safety features
and ratings. If you are buying a used
vehicle, remember to have a reputable
mechanic perform a safety check to
ensure key features such as brakes and
tires are up to current standards and in
good working condition.
Promoting safer vehicles, funding road
improvements and educating drivers
through awareness and advertising
campaigns are all part of ICBCs road
safety strategy to reduce and prevent
crashes and injuries and help make
B.C. roads safer.

Fiji Ready For Another Enounter
In Vegas
The Digicel Fiji sevens team is ready
for Las Vegas Sevens after their brutal
encounter with New Zealand over the
weekend.
Assistant coach Etuate Waqa said
they are going through some fnal
assessments on the players before
they fy out to America for their next
assignment.
Passionate rugby fan believes Fiji has
got what it takes to deliver but were
unlucky on the day with some missed
tackles and individual plays and not
forgetting the weather which probably
favoured New Zealand.
Former Flying Fijian Pio Bosco
Tikoisuva, who captained Fiji to the
historic win over the British Lions in
1976, said he has seen improvements
in the side.
Meanwhile Fiji is the second seeded
team in Las Vegas and they are pooled
together with Argentina, Canada and
hosts USA.
New Zealand will face tough challenges
ahead of this weeks Las Vegas Sevens
in the United States.
This comes after the fnal pools were
confrmed after the New Zealand
Sevens on the weekend.
The DJ Forbes captained side will be
tested in the early stages of pool play as
they are grouped together with trans-
Tasman rivals Australia and pacifc
powerhouse Samoa.
New Zealand currently sits at the top
of the table with 73 points, followed
closely by Fiji with 70 points while
England is not far behind with a total
of 64 points.
The Las Vegas Sevens will kick off this
Saturday.
Las Vegas Fijians Host Fiji Team
The Digicel Fiji 7s team was hosted to
a dinner by the Fijian community in
Las Vegas, USA on Wednesday
Assistant coach Etuate Waqa said the
boys appreciated the reception by
members of the Fijian community.
There are a few Fijian families here
and they hosted us to dinner to show us
their support, Waqa said.
Seeing that we have supporters here
encouraged the boys and it has helped
in our preparation as we move towards
another weekend of competition.
Waqa said they were reminded that
the team did not only represent Fijians
back home, but all Fijians around the
world, especially those in the United
States.
Meanwhile, the team had a pool
session in the morning and had a full
training session in the afternoon. They
worked on maintenance and endurance
training.
Waqa said they would put fnal touches
to their preparations and things that
needed improvement after watching
video replays and analysis of their
matches last weekend in Wellington.
I have also been talking with the head
coach (Alifereti Dere) and he reminded
me on what we can work on to improve
this weekend, Waqa said.
He said they needed the nations
support this weekend in another round
of the HSBC Sevens World Series. Fiji
plays Argentina at noon on Saturday,
USA at 2.56pm and Canada on Sunday
at 9.06am.
All semifnals and fnals will be played
on Monday.
Fabio Capello Quits As England Coach
Fabio Capello quit suddenly as England
coach on Wednesday in a dispute
over captain John Terry, throwing the
national team's preparations for the
European Championship into turmoil.
The Italian, whose contract was due to
expire after Euro 2012, resigned during
an hour-long meeting with Football
Association executives at Wembley
Stadium after four years in the job.
The drama unfolded hours after
Tottenham manager, Harry Redknapp,
who has long been considered
Capello's likely successor, was cleared
by a British jury of tax evasion.
The FA said nothing in its statement on
Wednesday night about the process for
replacing Capello.
"We have accepted Fabio's resignation,
agreeing this is the right decision," FA
chairman David Bernstein said. "We
would like to thank Fabio for his work
with the England team and wish him
every success in the future."
Bernstein publicly undermined Capello
last week by not consulting him
before taking the captain's armband
from Terry, who is facing a racism
trial. Capello criticized the decision
on Italian television, insisting it was
"absolutely" the wrong move.
Such a public spat with his employers
appears to have made the 65-year-old
Capello's position untenable.
"I would like to stress that during
today's meeting and throughout his
time as England manager, Fabio has
conducted himself in an extremely
professional manner," Bernstein said.
Capello replaced Steve McClaren in
the job in 2008 and revived a team at
its lowest ebb after failing to qualify
for Euro 2008.
After a lengthy honeymoon following
a perfect World Cup qualifying
campaign, the aura of a once-renowned
disciplinarian started to fade in South
Africa in 2010.
Capello started to feel the kind of
pressure he was used to when coaching
Real Madrid and AC Milan, with his
decision-making coming under serious
scrutiny as England was eliminated
with a 4-1 loss to Germany in the
second round.
Capello clung onto his job, reviving
the spirit in the England camp and
starting to bring young talent into the
team ahead of Euro 2012.
"The question everyone is asking,
fans and players, where do we go
from here?" England midfelder Jack
Wilshere wrote on Twitter. "Euro's is
just around the corner and we have no
manager?!?"
Capello's record as England coach
eclipsed that even of Alf Ramsey,
whose 1966 World Cup triumph is still
the last - and only - time the country has
won a major tournament. Capello won
28 matches, lost six and drew eight - a
67 percent success rate compared with
Ramsey's 61 percent.
England's next match is an exhibition
against the Netherlands on Feb. 29 and
its Euro 2012 opener is against France
on June 11.
If an interim coach was to be
appointed, former Manchester City
manager Stuart Pearce already is in
place in running the British Olympic
and England under-21 teams.

Georges St-Pierre Willing to
Surrender UFC Welterweight
Title to Fight Nick Diaz
Carlos Condit might have spoiled a
future bout between Georges St-Pierre
and Nick Diaz at UFC 143, however
the champion still intends on facing
Diaz in the Octagon and he will go to
extreme lengths to do so.
According to the report UFC
featherweight Kenny Florian revealed
during a segment on UFC Tonight that
St-Pierre said he would be willing to
relinquish the UFC welterweight in
order to face Diaz. Florian said the
conversation was held over a private
dinner this past weekend between the
two teammates after St-Pierre watched
the main event at ringside.
St-Pierre is currently rehabilitating a
knee injury, which forced him to pull
out of his bout with the Stockton, CA
native at UFC 137.
Condit would fll in as his replacement
and capitalized on the opportunity
when he out-struck Diaz throughout
fve rounds to be awarded the victory
via unanimous decision. It was seen as
a somewhat controversial decision, and
Condit has also taken a considerable
amount of criticism for his strategy
during the bout.
However, with a possible rematch on
the horizon, St-Pierre may still get his
shot at facing Diaz later this year.
Chael Sonnen Needs to Start Training
and Stop Talking - Anderson Silva
Anderson Silva believes Chael
Sonnen's endless trash-talk has worn
thin as of late.
Silva, who is set to rematch Sonnen
later this year, has become fed up with
the American provoking him recently
and he has fnally responded with some
words of his own.
During an appearance on UFC Tonight,
the UFC middleweight champion
retaliated against Sonnen and advised
him to focus on their upcoming
rematch, rather than continuing to
belittle him.
"Chael talks too much," Silva said.
"Chael needs to train. No more talk,
train."
Sonnen and Silva frst met at UFC
117, where Sonnen was able to test the
Brazilian unlike any other opponent in
Silva's career. However, he was then
submitted just moments before the
bout ended.
Prior to that showdown, Sonnen
unleashed a huge amount of trash-talk
on Silva, creating tons of publicity for
the fght.
However, despite the fact he lost,
Sonnen has continued to belittle "The
Spider," even going as far as directing
disparaging remarks towards his
country, teammates and family
This time around, Silva seems to have
fnally decided to respond and remind
his opponent that their rematch will
have an entirely different atmosphere
than before. Indeed, their second
encounter will take place in Brazil.
"Going to Brazil? Big problem," he
said.
With their rivalry hitting a boiling
point, it is obvious to see why the Silva
vs. Sonnen rematch is one of the most
anticipated bouts of 2012.
111M Viewers Tune In For Super Bowl

most-watched television program
in US history, according to ratings
fgures.
The Nielsen polling company said
a record 111.3 million US viewers
watched the New York Giants
defeat the New England Patriots
21-17, just beating the 111 million
people who watched 2011's game.
It was the seventh straight year of
