1016-320 Data Analysis II Weekly take-home assignment #3 This is due at the beginning of class next Wednesday (Day 11)

This is the third of several weekly assignments that you will be given. It asks questions similar to what we did in class this week. Turn in a typed report that you created using Word. Please use Minitab for your calculation and include the relevant portions of Minitab output to support your answers. Make sure that you state your answers: Do not expect the grader to read your Minitab output to obtain your answer. 1. A random sample of taxicab passengers was taken by Mr. Olusola Olaode (a student in the statistics lab) for use in a project. We would like you to use this dataset to test to see if males and females give the same average tip (in percent). The data consists of two columns, one indicating gender and the second gives the percent tip that person gave to the driver. The datafile TaxiTip.MTW is in the course folder: 320(MathiasonCrystal) on the drive Courses (Q:). To answer this question a) Clearly indicate the characteristic(s) [parameter(s)] under study b) State the null hypothesis c) State the alternate hypothesis

d) Use Minitab to perform the appropriate hypothesis test. e) What is the Test Statistic, and degrees of freedom? f) What is the P-value of the test? g) Indicate your decision (to either reject H0 or not reject H 0) h) Write an appropriate conclusion in the context of this problem. i) State the assumption made about each the distributions of percent tips for males and for females. Provide graphs from Minitab that allow you to evaluate these assumptions and give your conclusions regarding these assumptions. 2. The article Foraging Behavior of the Indian False Vampire Bat (Biotropica [1991]: 63-65 reported that 36 of 193 female bats in flight spent more than 5 min in the air before locating food. For male bats, 64 of 168 spent more than 5 min in the air before locating food. Is there sufficient evidence to conclude that the proportion of flights longer than 5 min before locating food differs for males and females? To answer this question a) Clearly indicate the characteristic(s) [parameter(s)] under study b) State the null hypothesis c) State the alternate hypothesis d) Use Minitab to perform the appropriate hypothesis test. e) What is the Test Statistic, and degrees of freedom? f) What is the P-value of the test?

g) Indicate your decision (to either reject H0 or not reject H 0) h) Write an appropriate conclusion in the context of this problem.

3. Do problem 20 from page 591 in the textbook. Enter the data into Minitab using two columns. Is there evidence that the mean cost of rental is lower for Thrifty than Hertz? Answer part a) through h) to address this question.

Copy and paste the session output. Write complete sentences and make it clear to us that you understand what you are doing. This course isnt just about the numbers. Write this report as if it was going to be read by someone who hasnt studied the material in three years. If you get stuck on Minitab
