Functionality Overview:
Handling Unit is a cross-logistics unit consisting of packaging materials and
packed materials. It has a unique identification number which is used in its tracking
throughout the logistics processes. Movement of handling unit involves movement of
packages and not individual quantities of materials.
Packaging materials or load carriers include pallets, containers, wrapping film,
boxes, cartons etc. Each handling unit has its own volume (depending on closed or open
packaging material) and weight (weight of packaging material and total quantity of
packed materials).

Organization Structure for Handling Units

Handling Units implementation requires at least two storage locations:
a) One handling unit managed
b) One non-handling unit managed
These storage locations are assigned to each other. The non-handling unit managed
storage location is called the partner storage location for the handling unit managed
storage location. Handling units or packed goods are monitored under handling unit
managed storage location whereas unpacked goods are monitored under non-handling
unit managed storage location. The transfer postings between the two storage locations
take place depending on packing or unpacking operations.
