Big guys on a small field ...

Laerskool Ohrigstads small rugby field this week played hosts to the Mpumalanga Ford Puma rugby team. In the photograph enthralled youngsters crowd some of their rugby heroes ysterday morning. Marius van Rensburg, the Team Manager, said the week long practice session under coach Jimmy Stonehouse was made possible by Hannah Game Lodge just outside Ohrigstad where the team stayed. During the week week they not only practiced, but also conducted a rugby clinic in Lydenburg and participated in a cancer charity golf day at Lydenburg Country Club. Van Rensburg told the newspaper the purpose of the training camp in the countryside is to promote rugby, bring the team within reach of their fans and to see what is happening in the areas near to the new team base that will probably be Mbombela (Nelspruit) from next year (more photographs on page 8).

Service delivery on track says EXCO Lekgotla

The Limpopo Governments Executive Council (EXCO) held the first Lekgotla for the year under the theme accelerating programmes to meet 2014 targets. This Lekgotla created a platform for provincial government departments, municipalities, State Owned Enterprises and traditional leadership to deliberate on progress made in the implementation of the integrated development plans in line with the Medium Term Strategic Framework (MTSF) that outlines government targets for 2014. These targets and other cross-cutting initiatives espoused by the Limpopo Employment Growth and Development Plan (LEGDP) were measured against actual service delivery in the province. According to a statement by the Office of the Premier , reports presented during the EXCO Lekgotla show that strides have been made to create a better life for all through government interventions to fight poverty and create employment particularly in the rural areas. Targeted rural development initiatives and the provision of basic services such as water and electricity have assisted government to make an impact in addressing challenges confronting the people of Limpopo. Reports on the provision of quality health care services and education show that, on the health front, government has been able to increase the number of people who have access to clinics and hospitals. It has been noted that efforts still have to be made to reduce the response time of Emergency Medical Services to calls made in informal settlements and rural areas. Intervention in this regard will go a long way to enhance the life expectancy of most poverty stricken people. On education, Limpopo has improved the grade 12 results by 15% in two years from 2009. The Limpopo government has constructed state-of-the-art schools in a quest to open the doors of learning for all. Efforts to improve the quality of education will assist government to increase literacy levels in Limpopo. This will undoubtedly increase the knowledge economy of the province. Consequently, more skilled people in the province will assist government to stand in good stead to wrestle economic challenges that plague communities in the province. The report on the rolling out of integrated infrastructure in various municipalities in the province shows that the construction of quality road networks, bridges, houses and hospitals has assisted government to create sustainable livelihoods among historically disadvantaged communities. The EXCO Lekgotla welcomed the establishment of intermodal transport facilities in the province because these initiatives are aimed at inducing economic activities in areas which used to be impenetrable in the past. The process to amalgamate the Limpopo State Owned Enterprises is at an advanced stage. These institutions are strategically positioned to boost governments efforts to create jobs for the people of Limpopo in sectors such as mining, tourism and agriculture. The previous quarterly labour force survey showed that in Limpopo unemployment has been reduced from 25% to 16% on a year to year basis. Once the process to amalgamate the State Owned Enterprises is finalised, their collective impact towards job creation will assist government to address unemployment in Limpopo.

It will get better

Will you celebrate Valentines Day?

Next week Tuesday is Valentines Day. On this day many people do something special for the one they love. We asked readers if they celebrate it and if they have special plans.

Mnr. Sean Haupt s: Ons vier dit. Spoil them, they deserve it! Ms Lenda Tjao said: I wont do anything for Valentines but I am expecting a gift from my boyfriend to show that he loves me. He can also take me out. Ms Rebecca Mmoyane said: I will celebrate Valentines. I am not buying anything, but I want to feel special.

Ms Gladys Mnisi said: At the moment I am single, but I would have loved to do something special with someone I love.

Mr Donald Motene and Mr Musa Maluleke said: We celebrate it. We plan to braai and make it a special evening for our loved ones. Well buys something for them as well.

Mr Big Masemola said: Everything must be red and white in town. Ill buy her flowers and maybe perfume. Ill make it a memorable day. Mr Emmanuel Maatjie said: I celebrate Valentines Day. Ill entertain my wife and daughter and do something nice for them. If I get something Ill appreciate it, if I dont it is not the end of the world.

There is nothing wrong with people reproduce but it is a matter that need to be decided and planned accordingly. We are now experiencing a lot of teenage pregnancies and most of our youth end up in this situation because we, elders did not play our part to the best of our ability. I have observed over the years that more and more teenagers are falling pregnant, and it is becoming acceptable in our society. This is not because we cant see it is wrong but we have condoned it for too long. The major concern about this is the risk that this teenagers are exposed. And more so the potential threat to their future. The unfortunate part is that the girls are affected negatively by this pregnancy more than teenager boys. All teenagers are attending or supposed to be attending school, Most teenagers are impregnated by men who are way above their age. Pregnancy clearly mean that condoms were not used during the sexual encounter. Most of the teenagers dont know their HIV status.

Teenage pregnancy

Advertorial

Ms Tryphosa Makoo said: Yes, I celebrate it. Ill go out with my partner to a restaurant. I would like to get something - anything he gives me. Ill also buy him something.

After stating all this facts I maybe right to say that teenage pregnancy may bring more devastating results than having a baby born. Teenagers who fall pregnant are likely to have a lot of pressure and perform less when they return to school especially when support is not provided. some may not have the opportunity to go back to school. Some may contract HIV only because they had unprotected sex which lead to pregnancy. Due to lack of further education or strain that can put to the family due to unplanned baby poverty can result.

Ms Liezl Harmse s: Ja, ek vier Valentynsdag. Ek sal daarvan hou om n Valentyn te h, maar ek het nie op die oomblik een nie.

The matter Im trying to raise here is that we should all stand up and work against teenage pregnancy because of the results it may bring to our community. Possible solutions Education around sexuality need to be intensified. Correct role modeling should be instilled amongst our children Ways to raise confidence in our youth is essential. Parents are should strengthen without apology good ways of parenting. Lets work together to ensure that we have enough successful and healthy youth. - Abednico Makina

Mr Khutso Makofane said: Ill celebrate it. Me and a lady will be going to Hannah Game Lodge. Ill buy her big flowers.

Ms Bianca Mamobolo said: I would like to receive something for Valentines Day. I will also do something special for someone. Right: Mr Sipho Tlou said: I treat my wife as if it is always Valentines Day, so on 14 February it is just a money making scheme to me.

Puma power at Ohrigstad

They trained at Laerskool Ohrigstad
The Mpumalanga provincial rugby team, the Pumas, spend the week practicing at Ohrigstad. The team stayed at Hannah Game Lodge and also made use of the team building facilities at the lodge. While the schools rugby field is usually deserted while classes commence in the more than 100 year old building, men were now stretching muscles, lifting weights, running and practicing various rugby skills. A highlight for the schools boys were when they received a training session with these rugby heroes on Thursday morning.

Buffels ready for rugby season
The Buffels started their season on a high note regarding their support infrastructure. Old Springbok centre, Danie van Schalkwyk, who played for the Green and Gold in the late 90s, has volunteered to assist with the coaching of the clubs backline in his spare time. Danie and the late Ettienne Botha, was a centre pair to be reckoned with. Danie is currently establishing his own business in the region and we wish him the best of luck. It will be a honour for us to be associated with him said Mr Charl van der Merwe of the Buffels Rugby Club in Steelpoort. A vast number of new faces has joined us as well. I would like to welcome each and every one of you lads to the club, to the old members, thank you for your commitment and together, we will accomplish great achievements this season. The training sessions have started with a bang, fitness and stamina is now the main objectives. Game plan will gradually be implemented along with the practice sessions as the season progresses. Practice times are every Tuesday and Thursday from 18h00 until 19h30 at the Winterveld Recreational Clubs Rugby field. Everybody interested, is more than welcome to join. They played their first friendly game last weekend against the second team of the Lydenburg Rugby Club, the Rooikatte. The game time was used as trials for both the clubs where by different team combinations and game plans were tested. The half time score was 17-0 in favour of the Rooikatte. The second half went much better, we were one point behind in the last minute of the game 2019, but then unfortunately our ball was intercepted and they scored right under the posts. End score 27-19. Thank you to the Rooikat Rugby club for their hospitality and we wish them all the best for the coming season! Thank you to our sponsors, making our first game possible: Pick and Pay Steelpoort, Lumcor and Mopane caf Van der Merwe said. Orighstad has also started a rugby club, and they invite anybody interested to come and join them. You can contact Karel Beetge for more information on 0725110934. Good luck to you guys and we will support you anyway we can to ensure you sustain for a long period of time. Then finally, as a rugby club, we would want to thank Eastern Chrome Mines for the use of their rugby field and for maintaining the field at such a high standard. We appreciate it! For the love of the game! (Article: Charl van der Merwe, Buffels Rugby Club)
