Introduction

This document describes the stages to integrate and use MGE UPSs with the HP OpenView Network and Systems Management platform. This document is applicable for HP OpenView release 6. To use any MGE UPS with this platform, you must have completed the installation and configuration procedures first.

2 Installation and configuration procedure

2.1 Installation procedure

1. Execute the " hpov_integration_vxx.exe" package and follow the instructions: 2. The script will perform the following actions: Copy the configuration files. Copy both MGE MIB and Icon files. Compile and load the MGE MIB. Load Message Management for Events and Actions. Modification of the oid_to_sym file for the auto-discovery of MGE UPSs. 3. Stop NNM services and HP OpenView console. 4. Configure the MGE SNMP cards/agents (described in the following section). 5. Perform auto-discovery to detect the MGE UPS SNMP cards/agents. 6. Discover your network map using the HP OpenView "IP discovery" feature in order to watch the MGE UPS SNMP agents.

2.2

Configure the MGE SNMP cards/agents

Each MGE SNMP card or agent must be configured so that the SNMP alarms (Traps) are sent to the HP OpenView platform. To do this, the HP OpenView host must be declared in the managers table of each SNMP card and agent. Run the SetSNMPManager.bat script file under "<HP OpenView installation directory>\bin" directory and follow the instructions. During the procedure, you will be asked for: The IP address of your SNMP card or agent, The IP address of the HP OpenView host, The read/write community name for the agent (by default "public" if not specified), The trap receiver community name (by default "public" if not specified). Repeat these steps for each MGE SNMP card or agent. NOTE: You also have other possibilities: 3. For MGE SNMP cards, you can use the telnet configuration menu. You can also use the HTML settings page for the "Manager Table" settings. 4. Use a MIB browser to configure the SNMP cards and agents. However, we strongly suggest using the script file as these operations require an in-depth knowledge of the SNMP protocol and a good understanding of our products.

2.3

Uninstalling the agent

From the "Add/Remove programs" item of the control panel, execute "HP OpenView MGE UPS Package". This script will perform the following actions: Remove both configuration files and icons. Unload the MGE MIB. Remove Event Message records and actions. Be careful, this operation could take a long time because each event must be unloaded one at a time. Important Notes: During installation, the oid_to_sym file has been saved in HP OpenView directory as oid_to_sym.mge before modification. Before initiating uninstallation, be careful that restoring that file from the saved file available in the HP Openview directory could erase further modification that could have happened to this file. It is important to compare these two files before running the uninstall program.

3 Operation
3.1 MGE UPS Automatic discovery (Auto-Discovery)

Any MGE UPS with a SNMP card or a SNMP proxy agent will be automatically discovered by HP OpenView. For easier identification, each UPS is represented by a specific icon.

3.2

Receive and view UPS alarms

The icon in HP OpenView console represents the communication status between the MGE UPS (with a SNMP card or SNMP proxy agent) and the HP Openview platform. Icon UPS status Normal. The communication status between the MGE UPS (with a SNMP card /or SNMP proxy agent) and the HP Openview platform is normal. Communication lost between the MGE UPS (with a SNMP card or SNMP proxy agent) and the HP Openview platform. The HP OpenView platform cannot reach the MGE UPS (The SNMP card or SNMP proxy agent doesn't respond to any "ping" request). For each alarm (trap) sent by the UPS, a message box is displayed on the HP OpenView platform:

UPS alarm sample

You can check the alarm list for all UPS equipment from the alarm console. A text message is associated with each trap (alarm or acknowledgement) sent by any UPS. The color depends on the alarm severity White: Normal status (Alarm Acknowledged) Orange: Major Red: Critical
