Why should I travel to Albany to talk with my legislators about library issues?
Libraries need you to speak out for them. Libraries need stable State funding. Legislators need to learn what libraries

Advocacy Day Bus Trip Our message this year:

We are asking our legislators to support the restoration of Library Aid to match the proposed increase in School Aid during the states 2012-2013 fiscal year an increase of 4%. According to a recent Siena Research Institute poll of registered voters conducted by the New York Library Association, 71% of respondents agreed that libraries deserve the same funding increase as schools. State funding for library services is currently at $79 million or what it was in 1994. No other educational institutions are funded at 1994 levels. Since 2008, library funding has been reduced by 23%. During that time, library usage has increased from 147 million items borrowed in 2007 to 165 million items borrowed in 2010 (an 11% increase). Libraries are essential to our communities, our schools and our college campuses. Libraries serve people of all ages and backgrounds and at every phase of their learning development. No other state funded service serves so many people for so few dollars. Library Aid amounts to less than one tenth of one percent of the State Budget, and yet the libraries and library systems this funding supports serve over 14 million New Yorkers.

Cost is $18 per person (includes snacks)

Thanks to the generous support from Library Friends Groups, we are able to keep the cost low.
