INTRODUCTION

Founded Location About Description by Dr. Kiran Bedi in the year 1987 Khasra No 99, Majri Karala, Near Sector-22 Rohini, New Delhi, India 110081 Education, Women Empowerment, Vocational Training, Healthcare, Environment & Rural Development Navjyoti India Foundation has been working with underserved communities ever since its inception in 1987 Presently, the organisation works in Resettlement Colonie of North West Part of Delhi namely Bawana and Jahangirpuri, and an urbanized rural area called Karala a Villages in Gurgaon district, Sohna Block, Haryana. Education, Women Empowerment and Vocational Trainin have been the primary areas of intervention by the organisation in these communities. Besides, health care, environment interventions and community participation ar also run for promoting integrated community developmen services. To mobilize and harness the power of children, youth, women and people at large to combat illiteracy, ignorance gender discrimination and the evil of addiction with an ultimate aim of crime prevention and social development. Our Organization
Navjyoti Delhi Police Foundation is a voluntary organization registered under the Society Registration Act, 1860, in the year 1987. A seventeen year old organization formed under the leadership of Dr Kiran Bedi has been running several interventions in the areas of child education, women empowerment, health care, vocational training, protection, shelter, rural development, de-addiction treatment and counselling and environment.

Our History
Navjyoti Delhi Police Foundation was founded by Dr Kiran Bedi and 17 other like-minded Officials of Delhi Police, as a result of the inextricable link that existed between crime and drugs. The objectives were to work for correction, de-addiction and rehabilitation of the drug addicts as a crime prevention measure. Realizing the need to adopt an integrated approach, the organization started to reach out to other left out sections of society as well including women, children, youth and general community.

To mobilize and harness the power of children, youth, women and people at large to combat illiteracy, ignorance, gender discrimination and the evil of addiction with an ultimate aim of crime prevention and social development.

Our Objectives
To ORGANIZE services for individuals, groups and communities to enable them to learn and act towards community development. To INITIATE correctional and rehabilitative measures for the criminals and drug addicts. To PROVIDE preventive, corrective and rehabilitative services concerning drug and alcohol abuse at primary, secondary and tertiary levels and promote temperance. To PROMOTE formal and non formal education for empowerment of women, children and youth. To UNDERTAKE projects for development of education, vocational, training and self help groups in rural areas. To CONDUCT research on social issues and problems of development. To DISSEMINATE information on the same through print and audio visual media.

Navjyoti is operational in three resettlement colonies of Delhi located in the North and North West Part of Delhi and in rural areas in Sohna Bolck of Guragon District in Haryana. Besides, a Drug Demand Reduction Training Institute is running in Karala Majri in North West Delhi.

Our Strategic Interventions :Education interventions Preparing Children for the mainstream Balwari A total of seven Balwaris in Bawana are offering early childhood care and education to more than 100 children in the age group of 3 to 5 years. Gali schools More than 4000 Children in the age group of 4 to 8 years are offered education at their doorstep in different project areas with a view to increase their inclination towards education. Learning Centres A s p a r t o f t h e g o v e r n m e n t s programme for Universalization of Elementary Education, Navjyoti is running 50 learning centers in Bawana and 15 in Jahagirpuri in order to reach out to drop out and out of school children to prepare them for mainstream education. A total of 2600 children are covered through this intervention. Bridge Education Bridge education is an endeavor to offer tutorial assistance to children studying in government and private schools especially at the secondary level in order to ensure their continuity andretention and enhance their performance. Eight centers catering to 320 children in HolambiKalan and 13 Centers

catering to 200 children in Bawana are running presently. These children are also provided with career counselling and life skill education.

Health Care promoting positive health seeking behaviour


General OPD:- A general OPD run for seven hours a day provides treatment for various ailments. Besides, linkages are developed with various government and private hospitals to refer patients requiring specialized treatment and organizing awareness and treatment camps for reaching out to large number of beneficiaries. School Health Programme:- School health programme is an integral aspect of the health care services where all the children in the education components are provided with health monitoring on regular basis as well as health education according to the prescribed curriculum. Community Based Care and Support Programme for People Living with HIV/AIDS:- Health Center at Holambi Kalan is running a community based care and support programme for people living with HIV/AIDS and striving to improve the quality of life of vulnerable children and PLHAs. DOTS Programme: DOTS Programme for treatment of TB patients in collaboration with the MCD Chest Clinic is catering to around 50 TB patients at HolmabiKalan Drug De-addiction Counseling Centre at Bawana : The centre mobilizes and counsels patients suffering from addiction to under go treatment and also generates awareness on drug abuse in the area.

Women development programmes tool for empowerment Empowerment of women through micro credit in Sohna Block : Commencing in November 2003, the project envisions to make a difference in the social and economic conditions of women in the villages through organizing more than 300 women in 30 Self Help Groups and mobilizing them to enhance IGPs and raise awareness and participation in various social and developmental activities. Family Counseling Centre: The center offers advice and counseling to the distraught families primarily on the issues of marital discords, dowry harassment, drug or alcohol addiction and child abuse. Free legal advice and referral services are also provided. Womens Groups in Jahangir Puri: Around 170 women are organized into 17 groups who are being sensitized on various developmental issues and encouraged to participate meaningfully in various activities of the organization. Adult education for women in Bawana and Holambi Kalan : Nine adult education centers in Bawana and four in Holambi Kalan are catering to around 250 women and striving to increase their awareness about various

developmental issues as well. Project Swabhimaan for promoting self reliance of women in shelter Homes: The project started in partnership with Social welfare Department of the Delhi Government, an NGO Partners in Change and Corporates like GAP Inc and Signet seeks to offer economic self reliance for around 100 women living in shelter Homes in Nirmal Chhaya Complex

Vocational training means of promoting livelihood Computer Training Centre at Karala: A computer center has been opened in the Karala village for providing computer training in the areas of DTP and MS Office to around 50 youth in the area. Vocational Skills in the areas of Stitching and Tailoring, Typing and Beauty Culture: Vocational Skills are imparted in these trades to more than 150 women in Jahagirpuri, HolmabiKalan and Naya Gaon village in Sohna Block to offer them opportunities of becoming self reliance. Besides, these women are also provided with entrepreneurship and marketing skills. Placement services for facilitating on- the- job training has also been introduced recently. Community mobilization platform for sustainability Eliciting the participation of the community in all the programmes have been one of the most important strategies of Navjyoti to aim towards sustainability. Under the programme, community leaders, various community based groups such as PTMs, School supervision committees and youth groups are mobilized and capacitated to advocate for the cause of the community both at the micro and macro level Environment Programmes towards sustainable lifestyles With a view to adopt social change to adopt environment friendly and sustainable lifestyles, interventions have been initiated in project areas especially in villages in Sohna Block. A project on Developing sustainable water harvesting structures in Abhyepur village has been initiated in the year 2004 with the support of Netherlands Embassy. Construction of a check Dam, recharging of dried up wells, and installation of two hand pumps, gully plugging and reviving ponds has been the major activities so far. Drug Demand Reduction Training Institute

working for exceptions OPD for counseling and mobilizing drug addicts: The OPD at Sarai Rohilla Police station operates as a day care center for orienting and mobilizing the patient and his family for the treatment. The schedule covering yoga, input sessions, individual counseling sessions is followed from 10 to 5 p.m. Drug Abuse Counseling and Treatment Center: The six months treatment programme run by the organization is based on an integrated and multidimensional approach of counseling, homoeopathy, yoga, naturopathy and spirituality. It works on the therapeutic community model and also runs family assistance and after care programmes as integral aspects of treatment and recovery of the patients. Training of Stakeholders on Drug Demand Reduction Practices: Navjyoti initiated a two year training programme for sharing Navjyotis model of Drug Demand Reduction Practices in the year 2003. The programme is a part of Multi Agency Cooperation to Enhance Services to Drug Users in New Delhi supported by the German Development Cooperation (GTZ). As part of the training, stakeholders involved in the field of Drug abuse are capacitated through five days workshop conducted every month. This has gone a long way in increasing networking among stakeholders too. Research Project to Study the Efficacy of Homoeopathy in Treating Withdrawals: Research work on Double blind placebo controlled trail of indicated homeopathic medicines in the management of withdrawals of drug dependants is being carried on under the scheme for extra mural Research in ISM&H since two years. Navjyoti as a resource center : With a view to disseminate Navjyotis experiences, learning and good practices in the field of drug abuse, a resource center was established with the support of US Embassy. The resource center operates at three levels namely running documentation center which is a storehouse of information on varied issues related to drug abuse, conducting outreach shows to sensitize the masses on the issue and publishing and disseminating various models of treatment and good practices in print and audio visual medium for fellow NGOs, academicians, researchers, Govt and allied agencies. Helpline on HIV/AIDS: Telephonic counseling on HIV/ AIDS has been started from Dec 03 with the support of Delhi State AIDS Control Society and have received more than 80,000calls till date. Pathological laboratory providing x-ray and test facility:

The pathological laboratory running in the slums of Yamuna Pushta was also shifted to Karala and providing X-Ray and tests facilities for the people in the area. Workplace Prevention Programmes, Noida Industrial Area and DTC Depots sensitizing workers on drug abuse In order to address the issue of drug abuse among workers in the factories and those working in the DTC Depots, workplace prevention programme have been initiated around five years back in the Industrial area of Noida and various DTC Depots starting with Indraprashta DTC Depot, moving on to cover Vasant Vihar, Dichaon kalan and Bawana DTC Depot. Supported by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, the programme seeks to sensitize workers on various aspects of drug abuse and equip them with skills for reducing the intake of alcohol and smoking which is found very common among them. Home visits, counseling sessions, medical check up, awareness shows are conducted to sensitize and mobilize people on the same.

Milestones Reached So Far 1987 Navjyoti de addiction center started in Andha Mughal and seven other Police Stations Apradh sudhar silai kendra at Yamuna Pushta Slums to rehabilitate 25 crime affected women. Navjyoti pathshala at Yamuna Pushta started 1988 Navjyoti Delhi Police Foundation registered as a voluntary organization. Vocational training center started for women at Jahangirpuri 1989 Kutir Udyog started to provide incomegenerating opportunities at Tihar jail. 1990 Navjyoti De addiction centers in various Police Stations centralized at Sarai Rohilla Police station. 1991 A treatment model based on Medico Psychosocial and spiritual management with homeopathy and yoga developed, standardized and adopted. 1992 Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, GOI of India, supports

Deaddiction treatment Programme (support continued till then). 1993 A day care center set up to ensure follow up and monitoring of recovery addicts. 1994 Tihar jail Rehabilitation project started for the economic upliftment of more than 100 women inmates. 1995 Navjyoti Gratitude club started by recovering addicts to offer financial and social support to addicts and their families. 1996 Navjyoti diversifies into rural development at Bhondsi village near Gurgaon. 1997 The Economic and Social (ECOSOC) of United Nations Grants special consultative status to Navjyoti. 1998 Gali School project initiated at Yamuna Pushta slums. 1999 Drug de addiction Awareness Programme for industrial workers at Noida started in collaboration with FICCI United Nations awards Serge Sotiroff Memorial Award (Vienna) to Navjyoti for outstanding contributions in the field of international Drug Abuse prevention. 2000 Integrated community development project to eradicate child labour initiated at Yamuna Pushta Slums with the support of Royal Norwegian Embassy Indian Population Project (IPP-viii) supported by the MCD started at Yamuna Pushta and Jahangirpuri. 2001 Communities based care and support for PLHAs and CAAs initiated in Yamuna Pushta with the support of MAMTA. A multi purpose Rural Development Complex inaugurated at Nayga Gaon, Haryana. National open school accredits Navjyoti as a study center. 2002 Dots center opened at Yamuna Pushta for

treatment of tuberculosis. Navjyoti health center at Yamuna Pushta achieved the distinction of treating 1-lakh patients. 2003 Training of stakeholders on Drug Abuse started with the support of German Development Corporation (GTZ) Research project on studying the efficacy of homoeopathy in treatment of withdrawals initiated under the scheme for Extra Mural Research in ISMH&H A Project for promoting self reliance for women in shelter homes in Nirmal Chhaya started in partnership with government, corporate and another NGO Learning centers opened at Yamuna Pushta and Jahangirpuri as part of UEE mission of GOI Navjyotis own center as a Drug Demand Reduction Training Institute inaugurated at Karala Majri and drug abuse treatment programme shifted from Sarai Rohilla Police Station to Karala. A project on Empowerment of women through micro credit initiated in rural areas with the support of American India Foundation. 70 Gali schools established in 38 villages in Sohna Block with the support of LIFE Trust. 30 Gali Schools established in Jahngirpuri. 2004 Navjyoti phased out from Sriniwaspuri project area. Navjyoti developed as a Resource Center with the support of American Embassy Yamuna Pushta Slums relocated to Bawana and Holambi Kalan Resettlement Colony. Interventions initiated at newly relocated areas of Holambi Kalan and Bawana for integrated community development. General OPD, Pathological Lab, Computer center and a family Counseling Centre started in Karala for village community. A Project on Developing sustainable water harvesting structures initiated at Abhyepur Village in Sohna Block with the support of Netherlands Embassy 2005 Libraries for children established in Bawana, Holambi Kalan and Jahagirpuri

resettlement colonies with the support of Room to Read Trust. A project on Organization of beneficiaries for formation of 35 self help groups in seven villages in Sohna Block initiated with the support of CAPART Ministry of Youth affairs, GOI supports Vocational Training interventions running at Jahangirpuri.

in the field of international drug control has encouraged us to keep our relentless work. The founder General Secretary Dr. Kiran Bedi has been awarded the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award equivalent to the Asian Nobel Prize, for Government service, which gave us stimulation to work harder.

More than 60 patients offered treatment at any given time. OPD acts as an entry point, orients patients and family for the treatment. OPD works as a day care centre prepares the patient for six month residential treatment.

Therapeutic Community model followed for working on the attitudes of patients with individual and group counseling very vital components. Homoeopathy, spirituality, yoga and naturopathy are integral aspects of treatment. Family assistance programme, after care and home visits ensures reintegration of the patient into the society. 23
