Company Description
In mid-2010 it acquired direct marketer Automotive Specialty Accessories and Parts. The deal, valued at $27 million, included Automotive Specialty's Illinois-based Whitney Automotive Groupand Ohio-based Stylin' Trucksretailingoperations. Each unit operates a brick-and-mortar store location, catalogs, and e-commerce sites, though Whitney accounts forthe larger portion of business. Indeed, Automotive Specialty's successful e-commerce business and distribution facility in Illinois were attractive because they complemented U.S. Auto Parts' own operations and will provide a foundation for continued growth. (With Whitney's facility in its distribution network, U.S. Auto Parts is able to shiporders to 95% of its customers in the US within two days of purchase.) Theacquisition also expanded U.S. Auto Parts' inventory to include products for ATVs, motorcycles, and recreational vehicles, and deepened its niche offerings for the Jeep and Volkswagen brands. As part of the deal, Automotive Specialty became a subsidiary of U.S. Auto Parts Network. Picking up Automotive Specialty helped to boost U.S. Auto Parts' revenue. Sales rose above $260 million in 2010, a nearly 50% increase from $176 million the year before. Yet the purchase also brought restructuring charges and higher operating expenses that, together with increased freightcosts, contributed to a nearly $14 million loss in 2010. To jump-start its bottom line, U.S. Auto Parts rolled out a new pricing strategy (basically, increasing prices on items to gauge whether consumers would continue to buy them), and the move is expected toboost marginshigher than 30% in 2011. The company, which boasts a variety of aftermarket supplies, often refines its offerings by removing low-selling products and updating them with new lines of merchandise. Included in that mix is U.S. Auto Parts' own privatelabel brand of mirror products called Kool-Vue.The bulk of its merchandiseis supplied by manufacturers in Chinaand the US. U.S. Auto Parts Network undertakes some ofits own online marketing efforts, which include paid search advertising, affiliate programs, and e-mail promotions. It outsources website development, catalog management, and phone sales to its operations in the Philippines. The firm's Canadian subsidiary sells its products in Canada. Directors Sol Khazani and Mehran Nia founded U.S. Auto Parts in 1995. Director Fredric Harman, who isa partner of Oak Investment Partners, owns27% of the company's shares.
