In her talk Prof. Sunanda explained a study she and her colleagues have carried out in the state of Kansas on the use of Optical Speed Bars in controlling the speed of vehicles. The talk was very useful for student members as it demonstrated how to carry out and implement research practically.
Prof. Sunanda Dissanayake is an Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at the Kansas State University in USA. Prof. K.D.W. Nandalal delivering his speech The Department of Civil Engineering together with the Civil Engineering Society warmly welcomed the new batch of E09 students to the Department of Civil th Engineering on 14 of November, 2011. Prof. S.B. Weerakoon, Dean, Faculty of Engineering; Prof K.D.W. Nandalal, Head of the Department and the academic staff of the Department participated in the event.
Introduction to Civil3D
A demonstration on Civil3D software was held on 21st November from 4.00 pm to 5.30 pm at the E.O.E. Pereira theatre by Mr. W.W. Bandara, an engineer from Road Development Authority design office in Kandy and also a past member of the CES.

Thondamanaru Bridge
The Thondamanaru Bridge project is a prefabrication of steel bridge. There had been a bridge in this location which was destroyed in 1996, and reconstructed temporarily by Sri Lankan army. This project is funded by the Government of Spain. Main contractor of this project is United Nations for P ro j e c t S e r v i c e s ( U N O P S ) a n d subcontractor HAG construction (PVT) Ltd.
the piles in each pier were 2, 3, 6 and 4 mm respectively. Currently pile caps are being concreted and beams are about to be cast.
Reinforcement of a cast insitu pile This is a balanced cantilever type bridge and is constructed over the sea. It is designed to resist marine corrosions, and bear the wave energy. K.T.S. Karunanayake (E/07)
Construction of piles The new bridge is 128.5 m long and 10 m wide and is designed to bear 180 ton of load. It consists of 4 piers, 4 spans. In each pier there are 4 piles, making altogether 16 numbers of piles. Piles were bored using the SR 40 pile rig. From the top level of the pile, a depth of 25 m was bored. When boring the pile holes, bentonite slurry was used to prevent collapse. Then C40 concrete was cast with retarder and the superplastilizer admixtures added to the mix. According to the design, piles bear the load by skin friction and end bearing 50 % in each. After finishing all 16 piles, pile load test was started. Four pile load tests were done for each pier. Each pile was loaded up to 270 tons. Deflections of Mr. Manjula Kalubowila delivering his presentation

It was a great opportunity to gather some practical knowledge about steel structures, techniques of steel designing, fabricating methods & quality control, steel connection types, production of metal sheets for various purposes & finally about the assembling of fabricated steel structural components at the work site.
The productivity of the trip was greatly enriched by Prof. K.P.P. Pathirana who shared his knowledge and experience with the students about the structures. The CES is especially thankful to the engineers and other personnel of Mahaweli Authority and Ceylon Electricity Board for facilitating this field visit and sharing their knowledge with the budding civil engineers of the E/07 batch.
Prof. Tan explaining his studies on pier base protection from scouring Prof. Tan is from School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Nanyang Technological University Singapore. He is Director, NTU-MPA Maritime Research Centre, an inter-school research centre.
It would not have been possible to organize this event without the guidance of Dr. U.I. Dissanayaka and the CES is thankful to Dr. Dissanayaka for his support in making this trip a success.
CAN YOU?????????? You are given a cylindrical cup of water and you have to empty exactly half of water from the cup. You are not allowed to use any kind of measuring instrument. How are you going to do this? Send your answers to editor.ces.pdn@gmail.com

Designers would have to bring their skills to a whole new dimension, because behaviour of spaghetti is like no other conventional structural material found in industry. The competition will be judged by a panel lead by Prof. M.P Ranaweera and Dr. A.L.M. Mauroof. The design with maximum ratio of bearing capacity over length is going to win the competition. This will be a great opportunity for all the participants to sharpen their design and conceptual skills. Also to improve team spirits while having fun playing with spaghetti. 1 , 2 and 3 places will receive attractive cash prices and certificates, so all the students are welcome to have a place in this once in a lifetime experience.
