Recent significant developments

Solidworks continued to perform steadily in C10Q4, with revenue coming in at 82.8m, up 29% yoy. New seats grew 22% to 11,983, and ASP increased by 10% to 5,402. These results were steady, although not outstanding, and imply the SMB market is continuing to expand. At Solidworks World 2011, three new products were announced, including Post3D (CAD share tool part of 3dvia brand) N!Fuze (cloud-based tool to share SW data) and Solidworks Live Buildings (online tool for AEC). Mgmt also announced N!Fuze and DS' free 2D CAD tool DraftSight will soon have mobile apps for the iPad. (January 2011) At Solidworks World 2011, mgmt discussed enhancements for the Solidworks 2012 release, including angle mates that don't flip at random, better use of processor cores, clean uninstalls, feature freeze, an idea section that is always available, file compatibility between versions and the ability to return to the interface using the Esc key. (January 2011) Dassault announced Bertrand Sicot, Solidworks EVP of Sales, will take over for Jeff Ray as Solidworks' CEO, effective

immediately. Ray will become EVP of Geographic Operations in parent-company Dassault. (January 2011) Rumors have been circulating that Dassault will give its CGM modeling kernel used to power Catia to Solidworks, replacing Parasolid in the developing release of Solidworks V6. Some industry experts believe Parasolid will still be used to drive the Windows desktop version, while CGM will drive the new cloud version. (January 2011) Dassault released the Solidworks 2011 product line, touting hundreds of improvements requested by customers. (September 2010) At Solidworks World 2010, SW on the cloud was introduced as a new browser-based modeling app called SW Product Data Sharing. Solidworks PLM was also announced, based on Enovia and using SW Product Data Sharing as the first stage. (February 2010) SW acquired Priware Limited, developer of SolidWorks Gold Partner Product CircuitWorks. (March 2008)

Strengths

Owned and supported by Dassault Systems. Dassault is a stable, profitable PLM company that has allowed SolidWorks to operate somewhat as a sole entity eDrawings has widespread support for viewing 3D files Considered weak in high-end MDA design tasks such as surfacing, handling large assemblies, industrial design, etc. Building and manipulating SolidWorks lacks flexibility on component placement and has limited capture and reuse of engineering knowledge Display tools SolidWorks does not have show only or hide previous levels, no simplified parts, no control over culling, etc. Design verification SolidWorks has no peer variables, design assistants, sequencing, etc.

Revenue leader in the mid-range CAD market Stable channel network allows for consistent messaging and coverage Large user base Assembly drawings SolidWorks does not have associative control, track dimension and annotation PDM Works is not built on a industry standard (Insight is built on global standard Microsoft platform) Not scalable with other Dassault solutions (different UI, kernel, data file, etc.) Core CAD kernel is Parasolid by Siemens PLM Software SolidWorks has run into issues regarding overlap among their channel. This has further increased the friction among resellers

SolidWorks competitive battlecard

Key traps to be aware of
SolidWorks resellers will tell your prospects that now that Siemens PLM Software is owned by Siemens Corporate, they will no longer support Solid Edge with any financial support. Nothing could be further from the truth. Since Siemens Corporate has owned Siemens PLM Software, they have proven their commitment to Solid Edge. Here are just a couple examples: Release of Solid Edge V21 with hundreds of new enhancements and features Release of Solid Edge with synchronous technology, delivering breakthrough CAD innovations that provide the fastest, most flexible design experience possible. This release shatters limitations of the past by letting users: Innovate faster in a new interactive design environment Iterate designs with unbounded speed and unmatched flexibility Edit outsourced CAD data faster than the vendor who supplied it Harness the power of 3D with the simplicity of 2D

Analysts throughout the industry agree this was a groundbreaking release: I have not seen anything as exciting and innovative as Siemens synchronous technology since the introduction of parametric modeling in the late 80s. TechniCom, Inc. Siemens reaffirms its CAD future with synchronous technology. Gartner The CAD world is about to change dramatically. Siemens PLM Softwares introduction of synchronous technology delivers a ground-breaking maturity leap in interactive 3D solids modeling. Ken Versprille, CPDA SolidWorks resellers will say that Solid Edge customers will not have any support or training available to them. This is another falsehood put forth. Siemens PLM Software and its Solid Edge partners are dedicated to providing top level support and training to all of our customers. To say anything otherwise would be proving how out of touch SolidWorks is with reality.

Top ten reasons to select Solid Edge over SolidWorks

1. Unique paradigm for fast/flexible modeling Design faster than your competition with your current design team. Capture your ideas as fast as you can think them. Change your models as fast as you can change your mind. Thrive in a multi-CAD world. 2. Superior transition from 2D to 3D Solid Edge is the only practical design system allowing you to create from scratch 2D data, and edit or maintain your legacy 2D data from multiple systems while you move to 3D at your own pace and using a single product. 3. Complete product modeling toolset Solid Edge boosts design productivity with specialized commands and environments to help you design much more quickly than with general-purpose CAD modeling tools. 4. Best sheet metal modeling in its class A core design capability of Solid Edge software, the Sheet Metal environment provides an entire design-throughfabrication workflow, using streamlined modeling commands that are tailored to the unique needs of sheet metal design. 5. Optimal performance and management of massive assemblies Solid Edge customers are creating assemblies well in excess of 100,000 parts. Solid Edge has a long tradition of leadership in this area with many unique capabilities to make it practical to work with large data sets.

6. Production-proven 2D drafting Solid Edge leads the market in drawing creation productivity with a focus on the four key components that affect the time required to progress from design to print, namely layout, performance, annotation and revision. 7. Scalable design and failure analysis Solid Edge is able to take advantage of Siemens unique position with Femap to offer three complementary methods for design analysis and validation. These solutions also utilize well-proven Nastran solver technology for accurate and repeatable results. 8. Collaboration throughout the supply chain With enhanced 3D annotation tools in Solid Edge, product manufacturing information (PMI) is easily stored with 3D models and assemblies. 9. Scalable design and design management solutions Solid Edge is the first CAD application to support Teamcenter service oriented architecture (SOA) providing robustness, performance and support for the new Teamcenter architecture that allows access to a central database from remote sites via company wide area networks. 10. Velocity Series Solid Edge is the core design component of Velocity Series a comprehensive family of modular, yet integrated solutions addressing the product lifecycle management (PLM) needs of the mid-market.
