Use of Statistical tables permitted. Answer all questions. Each full question carries 20 marks.
1. (a) (b)

Define the probability of failure, explain with an example.

In a survival test conducted on 100 cardboard boxes for their strength under impact loading, the following results were obtained :No. of impacts : No. of boxes 20 8 22 9 24 15

For this case, how will you describe the failure density, failure rate, and probability? Tabulate these quantities and represent them graphically.

(c) In the manufacture of a certain special duty transformers, units are required to meet a number of specifications related to temperature rise, output voltages, current ripple and on-off recovery times etc. Approximately 200 units are produced and subjected to final inspection daily. At the end of 20 working days, 190 units have been rejected out of 4150 units produced and inspected. (i) (ii)

Only one point on the control chart falls outside limits. On that day, 30 non conforming units were found in 200 units inspected. Investigation uncovered the fact that a voltage spot setting was being incorrectly adjusted. What aimed-at values of Po and control limits would you recommend for the following period based on an average daily productions of 200 units?
