Compact, Flexible, Reliable, Data-oriented

The Alcatel 1650 SMC is based on 2 x STM-1/4 line interfaces, 32 x 32 full nonblocking High-Order/Low Order SDH matrix, clock reference and equipment control functions, all concentrated in a 1-slot wide compact ADM card, optionally 1+1 protected. Three slots are dedicated to trafc ports, where exibility is total. The system may be congured for example as STM-1 ADM with full termination capacity (e.g. 63 x 2Mbps), as STM-4 Hub with 75 x Ethernet 10/100 Base-T interfaces for direct LAN interconnection or as STM-4 mini cross-connect with up to 12 x STM1 tributaries, which may be used to link for example several optical access

equipment (Alcatel 1640 FOX CPE) to large metropolitan networks. Multiple SNCP rings (e.g. up to 8 x STM-1 rings) may be terminated by the same node. The VC cross-connect size provides full connectivity at all VC layers for any possible conguration. STM-4 and STM1 electrical/optical interfaces are mounted on plug-in modules that allow exible combination of electrical and optical (any short or long-haul type) ports on the same unit. The 1650 SMC has a symmetrical architecture, allowing its application as Terminal Multiplexer, Add-Drop or mini Cross-Connect in spur, multiple rings or meshed topologies. All trafc ports (PDH, LAN, Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet

or SDH) of the same type have the same functionality and behavior and there is no inherent split between tributaries and aggregates. This means that it is possible the cross-connection of all trafc ports at all VCi levels. Two types of network protection mechanisms are implemented in the Alcatel 1650 SMC: Linear Multiplex Section Protection (MSP) and SubNetwork Connection Protection (SNCP), with Drop & Continue function for improved trafc availability. Although the system is very compact in size, node protection in addition to line protection is possible, as replaceable units are optionally redundant. Power supply protection is inherent as the DC/DC conversion function is distributed on each card. The Optical Multi-Service Nodes family consolidates the huge experience gathered by Alcatel in the eld of SDH transmission through tens of thousands installations worldwide. That's also where true reliability comes from.

Multi-Service Metro Applications

Flexibility today means also ability to deal effectively with data trafc patterns. Alcatel 1650 SMC offers to operators the ability to deliver several different types of multi-protocol services for the best balance between new broadband data services and high margin traditional voice and leased line services. Alcatel 1650 SMC can be equipped with Integrated Service Adapter (ISA) plug-in modules that perform ATM, Packet Ring and Ethernet 10/100/1000 rate-adaptive transport and switching functions for Virtual Private LAN Services at variable bit rates.

The extensive varieties of ISA dataengines enable operators and service providers to cope with current and future broadband trafc needs over transport networks through multiple layers convergence in a single equipment. ISA plug-ins can be adapted into new or previously installed Alcatel 1650 SMC as an add-on where and when needed - that optimizes bandwidth management and reduces both transport infrastructure costs and time-to-market for the introduction of new data services in the network.

The trafc originated and terminated by customer interfaces may be processed by the ISA-ATM or ISA-Packet Ring switching modules for optimal aggregation and delivery of broadband data services, such as Digital Subscriber Loop (DSL), Local Multipoint Distribution Service (LMDS), UTRAN (UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network), and Metro Ethernet point-tomultipoint services (Virtual Private Wire Services, Virtual Private Hub Services, Virtual Private LAN Services).

Metro Ethernet and Packet Ring

Data-aware features integrated into Optical Multi-Service Nodes family through ISA plug-in modules fully address todays carriers technical requirements and future service needs to provide telecom operators with stateof-the-art, future-proof optical provisioning platforms. In line with this vision, Alcatel 1650 SMC features ISA Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet native interfaces for the transport of highreliable frame-based data interconnections in point-to-point applications. In service Bandwidth on Demand is supported, to allow exible increments of optical bandwidth during network live operation. Moreover the ability to map Ethernet ows into multiple SDH resources (e.g. one Ethernet into 5 x VC-12s routed in diverse paths) boosts dramatically the survivability of the user data connection in case of network failures. Point to point connectivity does cover, however, only a portion of Metro Ethernet services.

Operators require in fact their network infrastructure to be able to manage and transport new Ethernet-based revenuegenerating Value Added Services (VAS) at lowest cost per bit, that implies Layer 2 intelligence entering the SDH network. ISA Packet Ring module is the solution to integrate Ethernet switching capability, multiple VLAN services and Layer 2 Virtual Private Networks (L2VPN) into the optical transport network following the smoothest and most costeffective path. ISA Packet Ring/Edge Aggregator plugin card of 1650SMC implements the natural evolution from point-to-point Ethernet Virtual Private Wire Services (VPWS) towards point-to-multipoint Ethernet Virtual Private LAN Services (VPLS). Its MPLS core engine ultimately ensures carrier-class Ethernet VAS with veriable QoS-based Service Level Agreements (SLA). ISA Packet Ring module introduces a fully-managed packet switching functionality which virtually embeds a shared MPLS-Ethernet switching data layer inside the optical SDH-based network resources. Main benets of Alcatels ISA packet ring solution are:

> total exibility in terms of data connectivity in the network (point-tomultipoint) > service provisioning through VLANs, priorities and Ethernet bridging support > interface and bandwidth aggregation for improved network efciency > trafc management based on CoS (Class of Service) with real-time network-wide prioritization and protection of delay-sensitive data streams > diversied and guaranteed QoS (Quality of Service) > enforceable and veriable Service Level Agreement (SLA) for each end customer > full inteworking with MPLS-based backbones Alcatels OMSN ISA Packet Ring provides operators with a carrier-grade solution for optimized data delivering with incremental investments, as new competitive services are cost-effectively generated by exploiting the existing SDH infrastructure, thus avoiding to deploy a new unnecessary overlay network infrastructure and ultimately reducing both CAPEX and OPEX.

Optimizing Network Infrastructure

Transmission networks are more and more dominated by data trafc. Alcatel 1650 SMC Optical Multi-Service Node offers integrated data-aware capabilities which help improving bandwidth utilization and network dimensioning. Alcatel 1650 SMC acts as an ideal multiprotocol transport node that allows consolidation of different trafc patterns (TDM, ATM, IP, Ethernet, Packet Ring) onto shared SDH VCs, while performing trafc control functions such as shaping and policing, which are vital to avoid network congestion and to provide QoS. By grooming trafc coming from different data users into common SDH Virtual Containers as close to the trafc sources as possible network operators can optimize bandwidth utilization overcoming the rigidity inherent to the discrete bit rates offered by SDH, and therefore to delay investments for network upgrades. Alcatel 1650 SMCs integrated ISA plugins allow to reach such goal without extra-costs for dedicated external equipment.

Moreover, Alcatel 1650 SMC reveals its outstanding performance when used as building block in access/edge metro rings, where trafc coming from different clients can be consolidated into common SDH transport resources by means of cell- or packet-based statistical multiplexing. Network operators con then take the following benets: optimization in the bandwidth utilization for more revenue-generating services, minimization of the interconnection costs to external data equipment, and ultimately reduced investments for network upgrades. The possibility to easily upgrade Alcatel 1650 SMC with ISA plug-in data engines dramatically reduces the time-to-market for providing new data services on the existing infrastructure, helping customers to increment investments only where and when needs for new services arise.

Optimizing Operation
Alcatel 1650 SMC shares most of replaceable units (common parts and trafc cards) with the Optical MultiService Nodes (OMSN) family. This exibility allows carriers to minimize the impact of spare holding and personnel training for immediate benets in terms of investments reduction and lower network operation costs. Moreover, the absence of processors on most of trafc boards makes reuse of available-in-stock cards and in-service upgrade operations a quick and easy job. All management information conguration, performance monitoring, alarms, security are available by means of Alcatel 1650 SMCs equipment control functions, through local Craft Terminal and through the Q- interface to the Alcatel 13xx Network Management System that offers the same look and feel management functions for all members of the OMSN family.
