This most basic of hat patterns can be knitted very quickly. The hat becomes a
blank canvas for unleashing creative ideas: For a vintage feel, embellish the hat with
buttons and flowers or change the look with dramatic pom-poms. Since this pat-
tern is so simple, you can let your imagination take hold­­—scour the bottom of your
sewing basket or knitting stash to add knit stripes, lazy daisies or beads, and make
this hat as individual as you are.

Beanie
Using US 6 (4 mm) knitting needles cast on 91 sts
and work edging as folls:
Work 6 rows in st st.
Work 2 rows in garter st, ending with RS facing for
next row.
Change to US 7 (4.5 mm) needles and beg with a K
row work in st st until work measures 5 ½ in (14 cm)
from cast on edge ending with RS facing for next
row.

Shape Crown
Row1 (RS): (K7, K2tog) 10 times, K1. (81 sts)

Row 2 and every alt row: Purl.

Row 3: (K6, K2tog) 10 times, K1. (71 sts)

Row 5: (K5, K2tog) 10 times, K1. (61 sts)

Row 7: (K4, K2tog) 10 times, K1. (51 sts)

Row 9: (K3, K2tog) 10 times, K1. (41 sts)

Row 11: (K2, K2tog) 10 times, K1. (31 sts)

Row 13: (K1, K2tog) 10 times, K1. (21 sts)

Row 15: (K2tog) 10 times, K1. (11 sts)


Break off yarn, run yarn through rem sts, draw up
and fasten off.
Sew seam using mattress stitch or backstitch if
preferred, reversing seam for lower
¾ in (2 cm) for hat turn-back.

Finishing

Using the photograph as a guide, decorate the hat
with mother-of-pearl buttons sewing them into place
Beanie with Pom-poms
using the yarn the hat is knitted in. Using contrast shade make 4 x 1 in (2.5 cm) pom-
poms and 4 x 2 in (5 cm) pom poms
Sew into place small fabric flowers and secure with Attach pom-poms to hat with crochet chains using
small stitches on the reverse of hat. photograph as a guide for placement.
Tie the length of ribbon around the flower bou-
quet and secure with a bow, trim ends of ribbon,
sew bouquet into place with small stitches on the
reverse of hat.

hat Veteran designer Louisa Harding has been creating knitwear for over fifteen
years. Her designs have appeared in Rowan Knitting Magazine, Vogue Knitting, and
Knitting Magazine. In 2005 she launched a signature line of yarns and design
collections. Louisa is the author of several books including Natural Knits for
Babies and Moms. She lives in England with her family.
