The Five-step formula for success in interview and GD * Practice * Dynamic listening * Think before you answer * Cite reasons, examples and anecfotes * Make a confident ending Let's go on to how GD is initiated and summarised A group discussion can be categorically divided into three different phases:

i. Initiation/ Introduction ii. Body of the group discussion iii. Summarisation/ Conclusion Let's stress on the initiation and summarisation: Initiation Techniques Initiating a GD is a high profit-high loss strategy. When you initiate a GD, you not only grab the opportunity to speak, you also grab the attention of the examiner and your fellow candidates. If you can make a favourable first impression with your content and communication skills after you initiate a GD, it will help you sail through the discussion. But if you initiate a GD and stammer/ stutter/ quote wrong facts and figures, the damage might be irreparable. If you initiate a GD impeccably but don't speak much after that, it gives the impression that you started the GD for the sake of starting it or getting those initial kitty of points earmarked for an initiator! When you start a GD, you are responsible for putting it into the right perspective or framework. So initiate one only if you have indepth knowledge about the topic at hand. There are different techniques to initiate a GD and make a good first impression: i. Quotes ii. Definition iii. Question iv. Shock statement v. Facts, figures and statistics vi. Short story vii. General statement Quotes Quotes are an effective way of initiating a GD. If the topic of a GD is: Should the Censor Board be abolished?, you could start with a quote like, 'Hidden apples are always sweet'.

For a GD topic like, Customer is King, you could quote Sam (Wal-mart) Walton's famous saying, 'There is only one boss: the customer. And he can fire everybody in the company -- from the chairman on down, simply by spending his money somewhere else.' Definition Start a GD by defining the topic or an important term in the topic. For example, if the topic of the GD is Advertising is a Diplomatic Way of Telling a Lie, why not start the GD by defining advertising as, 'Any paid form of non-personal presentation and promotion of ideas, goods or services through mass media like newspapers, magazines, television or radio by an identified sponsor'? For a topic like The Malthusian Economic Prophecy is no longer relevant, you could start by explaining the definition of the Malthusian Economic Prophecy. Question Asking a question is an impactful way of starting a GD. It does not signify asking a question to any of the candidates in a GD so as to hamper the flow. It implies asking a question, and answering it yourself. Any question that might hamper the flow of a GD or insult a participant or play devil's advocate must be discouraged. Questions that promote a flow of ideas are always appreciated. For a topic like, Should India go to war with Pakistan, you could start by asking, 'What does war bring to the people of a nation? We have had four clashes with Pakistan. The pertinent question is: what have we achieved?' Shock statement Initiating a GD with a shocking statement is the best way to grab immediate attention and put forth your point. If a GD topic is, The Impact of Population on the Indian Economy, you could start with, 'At the centre of the Indian capital stands a population clock that ticks away relentlessly. It tracks 33 births a minute, 2,000 an hour, 48,000 a day. Which calculates to about 12 million every year. That is roughly the size of Australia. As a current political slogan puts it, 'Nothing's impossible when 1 billion Indians work together'.'

Facts, figures and statistics If you decide to initiate your GD with facts, figure and statistics, make sure to quote them accurately. Approximation is allowed in macro level figures, but micro level figures need to be correct and accurate. For example, you can say, approximately 70 per cent of the Indian population stays in rural areas (macro figures, approximation allowed). But you cannot say 30 states of India instead of 28 (micro figures, no approximations). Stating wrong facts works to your disadvantage. For a GD topic like, China, a Rising Tiger, you could start with, 'In 1983, when China was still in its initial stages of reform and opening up, China's real use of Foreign Direct Investment only stood at $636 million. China actually utilised $60 billion of FDI in 2004, which is almost 100 times that of its 1983 statistics." Short story Use a short story in a GD topic like, Attitude is Everything. This can be initiated with, 'A child once asked a balloon vendor, who was selling helium gas-filled balloons, whether a blue-coloured balloon will go as high in the sky as a green-coloured balloon. The balloon vendor told the child, it is not the colour of the balloon but what is inside it that makes it go high.' General statement Use a general statement to put the GD in proper perspective. For example, if the topic is, Should Sonia Gandhi be the prime minister of India?, you could start by saying, 'Before jumping to conclusions like, 'Yes, Sonia Gandhi should be', or 'No, Sonia Gandhi should not be', let's first find out the qualities one needs to be a a good prime minister of India. Then we can compare these qualities with those that Mrs Gandhi possesses. This will help us reach the conclusion in a more objective and effective manner.' Summarisation Techniques Most GDs do not really have conclusions. A conclusion is where the whole group

decides in favour or against the topic. But every GD is summarised. You can summarise what the group has discussed in the GD in a nutshell. Keep the following points in mind while summarising a discussion: 1. Avoid raising new points. 2. Avoid stating only your viewpoint. 3. Avoid dwelling only on one aspect of the GD. 4. Keep it brief and concise. 5. It must incorporate all the important points that came out during the GD. 6. If the examiner asks you to summarise a GD, it means the GD has come to an end. Do not add anything once the GD has been summarised.

Last but not the least 1. Be as natural as possible. Do not try and be someone you are not. Be yourself. 2. A group discussion is your chance to be more vocal. The evaluator wants to hear you speak. 3. Take time to organize your thoughts. Think of what you are going to say. 4. Seek clarification if you have any doubts regarding the subject. 5. Don't start speaking until you have clearly understood and analyzed the subject. 6. Work out various strategies to help you make an entry: initiate the discussion or agree with someone else's point and then move onto express your views. 7. Opening the discussion is not the only way of gaining attention and recognition. If you do not give valuable insights during the discussion, all your efforts of initiating the discussion will be in vain. 8. Your body language says a lot about you - your gestures and mannerisms are more likely to reflect your attitude than what you say. 9. Language skills are important only to the effect as to how you get your points across clearly and fluently. 10. Be assertive not dominating; try to maintain a balanced tone in your discussion and analysis. 11. Don't lose your cool if anyone says anything you object to. The key is to stay objective: Don't take the discussion personally. 12. Always be polite: Try to avoid using extreme phrases like: `I strongly object' or `I disagree'. Instead try phrases like: `I would like to share my views on' or `One difference between your point and mine' or "I beg to differ with you" 13. Brush up on your leadership skills; motivate the other members of the team to speak (this surely does not mean that the only thing that you do in the GD is to say "let us hear what the young lady with the blue scarf has to say," or "Raghu, let us hear your views" Essentially be subtle), and listen to their views. Be receptive to others' opinions

and do not be abrasive or aggressive. 14. If you have a group of like-minded friends, you can have a mock group discussion where you can learn from each other through giving and receiving feedback.

Apart from the above points, the panel will also judge team members for their alertness and presence of mind, problem-solving abilities, ability to work as a team without alienating certain members, and creativity. Don't be disheartened if you did not do well in your first group discussion. The best possible preparation for a group discussion is to learn from your past mistakes.. Most of the time the knowledge that you have gained doesnt matter until and unless you have confident to face the interview and that i called the perfect person for the required job by the interviewer.

Now comes the most important things that a candidate should follow while facing a interview. A candidate should keep these things in mind before he/she goes for interview. 1. Never say the amount that you expect from them, specially when you are a fresher, simply dont do that. 2. Before you go to face a interview you should have some knowledge about the company you are joining, something about its history, and the service it provide. 3. Dont show that you are smart than the interviewer. 4. Dont talk too much, reply only to those things that you are asked for. 5. Never say no to this you should have atleast 2-3 questions with you to ask them. This shows your interest twards that company. 7. Dont give them your personel information, not until you have your job in hand. 8. Show yourself that you are not prepared for the interview, because if you start sayiny what you have memorised then you may get caughted. your every reply to the interviewer should look natural not mocked up. 9. Badmouthing previous employee, when you are asked that Why did you left your previous job? then never say that You had bad experience from the BOSS or they didnt offered you a handsome salary dont say anything like that. 10. And leave a impression on them, be in time for the appointement, be well dressed, show res[pect, be friendly(But not too much, just show that you are not afraid or nervous in front of them.) Interview plays an important role to get you a good job. After a good education, good knowledge it is not easy to get a good job. Many talented people do not get job because they are not able to answers the interviewer questions. The job interview is considered to be the most crucial thing in getting a new job. Behind every interview question there is another question. The main things to remember when responding to interview questions are to keep your answers relevant, brief and to the point. There are some questions that are asked frequently in interviews and you should prepare your answers beforehand. 1. The first and the most important question that asked in every interview is Tell Us Something About Yourself? Ans: It look like very easy, but remember this is the opening question of every interview, be careful while you answer it. Do not run into an answer for the sake of saying it. Your Resume is in front of the interviewer. He dont want to know your complete history. Keep the answer to a length that will last for a minute or two maximum. Try to cover the four topics education, early years, work experience and recent career experience. 2. The second most important question that asked in every interview is Why should we hire you? Ans: The easy answer is that you are the best person for the job. And dont be afraid to say so. But then back it up with what specifically differentiates you. Just point out how your assets meet what the organization requires. Never compare yourself with other candidates. Comparisons can certainly work against you. For example: You should hire me because Im the best person for the job. I realize that there are likely other candidates who also have the ability to do this job. Yet I bring an additional

quality that makes me the best person for the jobmy passion for excellence. I am passionately committed to producing truly world class results. If you an experienced candidate, Summarize your experiences: With five years experience working in the financial industry and my proven record of saving the company money, I could make a big difference in your company. Im confident I would be a great addition to your team 3. The other question, Why Do You Want to Work Here? Ans: The interviewer is listening for an answer that indicates youve given this some thought and are not sending out resumes just because there is an opening. For example, Ive selected key companies whose mission statements are in line with my values, where I know I could be excited about what the company does, and this company is very high on my list of desirable choices. 4. The another most important question is, Why Did You Leave (Or Why Are You Leaving) Your Present Job? Ans: State how you are looking for a new challenge, more responsibility, experience and a change of environment. Do not be negative in your reasons for leaving. It is rarely appropriate to cite salary as your primary motivator. Do not mention personality conflicts. The interviewer may spend some time probing you on this issue, particularly if it is clear that you were terminated. The We agreed to disagree approach may be useful. Remember hat your references are likely to be checked, so dont concoct a story for an interview. 5. The other important question is, What do you know about our company? Ans: Do enough research before going for the Interview! Spend some time reading or researching for the company. Tell them about the current status of the company. You might start your answer in this manner: In my job search, Ive investigated a number of companies. Yours is one of the few that interests me, for these reasons Give your answer a positive tone. Dont say, Well, everyone tells me that youre in all sorts of trouble, and thats why Im here, even if that is why youre there. 6. What did you think about your boss? Ans: Be as positive as you can. A potential boss is likely to wonder if you might talk about him in similar terms at some point in the future. 7. What are your strength & weaknesses? Ans: This is one question that you know you are going to get so there is no excuse for being unprepared. Strength: Concentrate on discussing your main strengths. List three or four proficiencies e.g. your ability to learn quickly, determination to succeed, positive attitude, your ability to relate to people and achieve a common goal. You may be asked to give examples of the above so be prepared. Weakness: Do not say you have none - this will lead to further problems. You have two options - use a professed weakness such as a lack of experience (not ability) on your part in an area that is not vital for the job. The second option is to describe a personal or professional weakness that could also be considered to be a strength, and the steps you have taken to

combat it. An example would be, I know my team think Im too demanding at times - I tend to drive them pretty hard but Im getting much better at using the carrot and not the stick 8. What Can You Do for Us That Other Candidates Cant? or What makes you unique?Ans: This will take an assessment of your experiences, skills and traits. Summarize concisely: I have a unique combination of strong technical skills, and the ability to build strong customer relationships. This allows me to use my knowledge and break down information to be more user-friendly. 9. What Salary Are You Seeking or Whats your Salary expectations? Ans: It is to your advantage if the employer tells you the range first. Prepare by knowing the going rate in your area, and your bottom line or walk-away point. One possible answer would be: I am sure when the time comes, we can agree on a reasonable amount. In what range do you typically pay someone with my background? 10.The last but not the least, How long you would stay with us? Ans: Admit that you want challenging career and you would stay with them indefinitely until you get challenging projects. But also mention to them you will give a lot of time to hop for jobs. We hope the above questions prove beneficial for you & help you in facing an interview & u gets a suitable job..

Recently I got selected for TCS in the TCS Placement Drive conducted by SHREDS @ Rajagiri College of Engineering, Eranakulam, Kerala.

There were 4 rounds: 1) Aptitude Test : The previous pattern has been drastically changed. They are not gonna test your verbal ability anymore. The test comes with 35 questions(60 mins). Negative marks @ 0.33/wrong ans. The trick is that the questions are too long & the real problem lies in the last 2 sentences. I was able to attend 32, but even guys who attended 16 got short-listed. 2) Technical Interview: Here they will ask your favorite subject and questions will mostly be based on that. I took up Digital Electronics and 8085 programming as my favorites. But I had done a software using VB.NET and was asked questions dealing with database creation, primary key, foreign key etc. Dont be upset if U dont know the ans. Be frank and bold. You should come well prepared with Ur favorite subjects. 3) Management Review Interview: Here your management abilities are tested. The interviewer asked me to explain about myself. I went through my details including academics, family and hobbies. Then he asked me about the different establishments of TATA. Next he wanted me to explain the latest trends in the software field. I was then ask to brief up the TCS profile. He then asked me whether I know about Rathan Tatas retirement from the chairmans post. Be bold and dont talk rubbish and accept if you dont know something. I was a bit worried after this round. But by gods grace I got into the next round. 4) Group Discussion: This had two parts, the first being your self introduction and the second being the discussion about the topic. Anyone can start the Self Introduction and here I scored by starting first. Then everybody( we had 10 in our group) did the same. Then we got the topic which was REALITY SHOWS. Luckily this was a topic about which I could say something. Dont keep your mouth shut. Try to open the talk by yourself if possible. Try to bring out valid points and dont spit out words just to keep the talk going. Face everybody while talking and dont keep your face fixed on a single person. The time allotted for topic discussion is 5 mins, so bring out all your ideas within that short span. Finally the results were announced after 10 mins, the procedure which started by 12 in the morning ended by 8 in the evening. DRESS AS AN INDEX TO CHARACTER | APPAREL OFT PROCLAIMS THE MAN | CAN YOU JUDGE THE CHARACTER OF A MAN FROM HIS DRESS ?
It is said that we can judge a mans character from his dress; But its not always so. Dress can only help us to a certain extent in knowing the broad facts of a mans character. A man who wears a costly dress is necessarily a man of lavish habits. On the other hand, a man who wears tattered clothes is not necessarily a man of miserly habits. He may be do so only due to his financial limitations. Yet it is true that in some cases dress serves as a useful index to the character of a man. Some common examples, from which we can get some idea of a mans character from his dress, are given below. We daily come across such persons as put on clothes of loud colours. We find them dressed in gaudy colours. They wear bushshirts printed with The faces factors and actresses. So, is the case with their shoes. Shoes with different designs on them are liked by them. We can easily know the character of such people by looking at the way in which they dress. Such people, if we carefully observe them, are very fond of show and ostentation. They lack the maturity of taste. They do not have sober habits. We can know this by their dress. Many people even if they are given costly and decent clothes, will make their appearance shabby and ineffective. They will put on the shirt or the coat, but will not button it up. The laces of their shoes will remain untied. If they use the tie they will not put the knot properly. They never bother whether their clothes are pressed or not. As these people are with their clothes, so they are with their habits. They behave carelessly in other matters also. They are slovenly in their dress, living, reading and other ways also. So in this way, dress reflects their character. Besides this, we find people wearing very simple dress. A white kurta, dhoti, and a white cap on the head and simple chappals are all that they dress themselves in. But their clothes are always very neat and clean. Though they do not waste much of their valuable time in dressing, yet they do not use their dress carelessly. Such people show that they are the followers of the principle, "Simple living and high thinking". They do not believe in ostentation. Mostly such people are intellectual. Broadly speaking, the dress of a man helps us to know his character. But at the same time it may also be added that the dress should not be regarded as the sole index to the character of a man. Many saints and Sadhus completely neglect their dress. But it does not mean that they are very low either in their mental or emotional standard. On the contrary, they raise themselves so high from the level of such worldly considerations that dress becomes quite meaningless to them. In the present age, Mahatma Gandhi used to wear only a loin cloth. But he was the man before whom the entire world bowed its head. So in judging the character of a man dress can kelp us only to a certain extent. It can never be the sole guide. We should also take other factors into consideration in judging a man.

How To Prepare & Face To Group Discussion | Some Important Topics & Tips For Group Discussion
There are some tips and some important topics of group discussion for the job preparing . Those candidate who was prospering for the interview prepare the group discussion . So see these topics.

A group discussion can be categorically divided into three different phases: i. Initiation/ Introduction ii. Body of the group discussion iii. Summarisation/ Conclusion

Initiation Techniques Initiating a Group Discussion is a high profit-high loss strategy. When you initiate a Group Discussion, you not only grab the opportunity to speak, you also grab the attention of the examiner and your fellow candidates. If you can make a favourable first impression with your content and communication skills after you initiate a Group Discussion, it will help you sail through the discussion. But if you initiate a Group Discussion and stammer/ stutter/ quote wrong facts and figures, the damage might be irreparable. If you initiate a Group Discussion impeccably but dont speak much after that, it gives the impression that you started the Group Discussion for the sake of starting it or getting those initial kitty of points earmarked for an initiator! When you start a Group Discussion, you are responsible for putting it into the right perspective or framework. So initiate one only if you have indepth knowledge about the topic at hand. There are different techniques to initiate a Group Discussion and make a good first impression: i. Quotes ii. Definition iii. Question iv. Shock statement v. Facts, figures and statistics

vi. Short story vii. General statement ~ Quotes Quotes are an effective way of initiating a Group Discussion. If the topic of a Group Discussion is: Should the Censor Board be abolished?, you could start with a quote like, Hidden apples are always sweet. For a Group Discussion topic like, Customer is King, you could quote Sam (Wal-mart) Waltons famous saying, There is only one boss: the customer. And he can fire everybody in the company from the chairman on down, simply by spending his money somewhere else. ~ Definition Start a Group Discussion by defining the topic or an important term in the topic. For example, if the topic of the Group Discussion is Advertising is a Diplomatic Way of Telling a Lie, why not start the Group Discussion by defining advertising as, Any paid form of non-personal presentation and promotion of ideas, goods or services through mass media like newspapers, magazines, television or radio by an identified sponsor? For a topic like The Malthusian Economic Prophecy is no longer relevant, you could start by explaining the definition of the Malthusian Economic Prophecy. ~ Question Asking a question is an impactful way of starting a Group Discussion. It does not signify asking a question to any of the candidates in a Group Discussion so as to hamper the flow. It implies asking a question, and answering it yourself. Any question that might hamper the flow of a Group Discussion or insult a participant or play devils advocate must be discouraged. Questions that promote a flow of ideas are always appreciated. For a topic like, Should India go to war with Pakistan, you could start by asking, What does war bring to the people of a nation? We have had four clashes with Pakistan. The pertinent question is: what have we achieved? ~ Shock statement Initiating a Group Discussion with a shocking statement is the best way to grab immediate attention and put forth your point. If a Group Discussion topic is, The Impact of Population on the Indian Economy, you could start with, At the centre of the Indian capital stands a population clock that ticks away relentlessly. It tracks 33 births a minute, 2,000 an hour, 48,000 a day. Which calculates to

about 12 million every year. That is roughly the size of Australia. As a current political slogan puts it, Nothings impossible when 1 billion Indians work together. ~ Facts, figures and statistics If you decide to initiate your Group Discussion with facts, figure and statistics, make sure to quote them accurately. For a Group Discussion topic like, China, a Rising Tiger, you could start with, In 1983, when China was still in its initial stages of reform and opening up, Chinas real use of Foreign Direct Investment only stood at $636 million. Then we can compare these qualities with those that Mrs Gandhi possesses. This will help us reach the conclusion in a more objective and effective manner. Summarization Techniques Most Group Discussions do not really have conclusions. A conclusion is where the whole group decides in favour or against the topic. But every Group Discussion is summarised. You can summarise what the group has discussed in the Group Discussion in a nutshell. Keep the following points in mind while summarizing a discussion:

Avoid raising new points. Avoid stating only your viewpoint. Avoid dwelling only on one aspect of the Group Discussion. Keep it brief and concise. It must incorporate all the important points that came out during the Group Discussion. If the examiner asks you to summarizes a Group Discussion, it means the Group Discussion has come to an end. Do not add anything once the Group Discussion has been summarized. 1. always be the initiator and concluder of the Group Discussion then being a participant. 2. But if you are participant always try to be the most vianl/key participant. 3. put points firmly and always try to get others support too. 4. if you find that the discussion os going off-track then never loose an opportunity to bring it back to stream this is the best point to score max. 5. try to keep latest information on the topic . 6. be very polite , people may try to provoke you to to get more points but try to keep cool. 7. most important dont wait for your turn to speak when discussion is on. interrupt politely if you want to put forward your points. 8. last but not the least keep a tab on the time given for discussion. score points by wrapping up the discussion if you feel that the discussion is heating but the time is going to be over. 9. during conclusion, do end with the conclusion note. that shows your leadership quality. Placement papers: Sample placement pattern for CTS Written exam had two sections:- Verbal and Analytical.(reasoning) The paper was damn easy. This was my 12th interview so was bit nervous as usual.I can give you an idea on how the paper was but im sorry I cant remember any questions. 1.) Verbal Section:There were questions like:A.) Two huge passages were given and there were 5 questions for each passage. I would recommend you to attempt these passages at the end. B.) Around 5-6 questions on finding which part of the sentence had an error.

EX- He thought (a)/he might (b)/not be able (c)/to do a job (d)./ We had to find which part of the sentence had errors. C.) Around 5-6 questions on arranging sentences in the order in which they might have occurred. a) The third calls for high aces to channel updrafts. b) Some paleontologists are of the opinion that the pterosaurs jumped from s dropped from trees or perhaps rose into the light winds from the crests of waves in order to become airborne. c) The second hypothesis seems unlikely because large pterosaurs could not have landed in trees without damaging their wings. d) Each theory has its associated difficulties. e)The first makes a wrong assumption that the pterosaurs hind feet resembled a bats and could serve as hooks by which the animal could hang in preparation for flight. OPTIONS:1) a,e,d,b,c 2)b,d,e,c,a 3)d,a,e,c,b 4)a,b,e,d,c D.)Around 5-6 questions on finding the wrong sentence from a set of given sentences. 2.) Analytical Part:This part to my amazement dint have anything from RS Aggarwal quantitative aptitude. There we not even a single formal question from percentages or ratio proportions or ages anything u could ever imagine the whole paper was kind of non verbal reasoning. The questions were like a.) Around 4-5 questions were like finding the odd figure out of given figures. VERY VERY SIMPLE. b.) Around 4-5 questions were like three figures were given and we had to find the fourth one based on some pattern. Was a bit tough) c.) I had some login problem in my system before beginning the test, so I was sitting idle for 15 mins in the beginning and at that time I was just gazing at the systems of students who were giving the test. Many of them had a question based on pie chart. A pie chart was given and 5-6 questions were based the pie chart. On the other hand when I started giving test I had a question based on a table. I had to take some percentages based on the given data. I didnt get any questions from pie charts. d.) Some 5-6 questions based on syllogism.EX-Some dogs are cats. All cats are cows. e.) Around 5-6 question were based on logic like If it rains, then he will dance. These questions were in the form of data sufficiency. This is all I can remember. Make sure you prepare from RS Aggarwal Verbal and Non Verbal reasoning very thoroughly. Be very calm and take the paper very carefully because it full of logical questions, you need to have a free mind while giving the test.
