MASTER OF TRANSLATION
About the program
The Master of Translation is a new graduate program at The Australian National University (ANU). Jointly offered by the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific and the ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences, it is designed to provide students with a focused qualification in the practice of literary translation, along with an understanding of the history of translation and an appreciation of a number of critical issues in the field. The focus of the program is on the training of working translators, rather than on translation theory.

Specialisations
The Master of Translation is available to students interested in translating between English and any of the languages taught at ANU. These language specialisations include Arabic, Burmese, Chinese, Classical Latin and Greek, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Javanese, Korean, Pacific Pidgins, Persian, Russian, Sanskrit, Spanish, Tetum, Thai, Turkish, Urdu, and Vietnamese.

Program structure
Students are required to complete eight courses (48 units) over two semesters full-time to obtain the degree of Master of Translation. A subsequent semester, devoted to a substantial translation project, will enable them to obtain the degree of Master of Translation (Honours). Students must complete two compulsory foundation courses, two compulsory courses relevant to their language of specialisation, and four elective courses. Example program structure (Chinese specialisation) Compulsory foundation courses: LANG6001: Translation Across Languages: The Translation of Literary Texts LANG6002: Translation Across Languages: Specialised Material Compulsory Chinese courses (choose two): CHIN6041: Case Studies in Translation (Chinese/English) CHIN6042: Toolkit for Chinese Studies and Translation CHIN6220: Translating Chinese Literature Elective courses: The four elective courses are chosen on an individual basis, with academic advice from the convenor of the students language specialisation. Students are encouraged to include advanced courses from across the University.
