Motivator/Teacher Input- Teachers will encourage students by showing them a powerpoint with multiple examples of sensory poetry. Then the teachers will have the students do a quickwrite sensory poem on a picture placed on the projector. After having a few students share their quickwrite responses, and giving them feedback on their poems, the teachers will place the students into groups of five and assign each student with one of the five senses. Next the teachers will ask the groups to choose one of the three images on the projector to write about. After that, the teachers will ask the students to write a three line stanza describing the sense they were given. Finally, the students will meet in their groups and form one fluent poem using the three line stanzas for each sense and share with their classmates and the teachers. Student Application- Initially, students will do a quick write sensory poem based on the image projected on the screen. Then they will be put into groups of five. Within that group, the students will pick one of the three images projected on the screen to write about. Then the students will be assigned one of the five senses and will write a three line stanza on that sense based on the image chosen earlier. After a few minutes, students will go back into their groups and combine their stanzas together creating one poem using the five senses. Finally, the students will get a chance to interact with the entire class by sharing their finished sensory poem. Lesson Closure and Evaluation- After listening to each groups sensory poem, teachers will give feedback on the poems and encourage students to think about their senses when doing everyday activities. Then the teachers will sum up the entire lesson and hand out exit passes where each student will write down and hand in their personal opinion about sensory poetry, what they liked and did not like about the lesson of the day, and inform the teacher about how well their group worked together. Homework/Extensions/Reminders: There will be no homework given.
