A Simple Gift
We must not, in trying to think about how we can make a big difference, ignore the small daily differences we can make which, over time, add up to big differences that we often cannot foresee. - Marian Wright Edelman, founder of the Childrens Defense Fund

Dear Friends, When I joined the team at My New Red Shoes last January, I was thrilled to become part of an organization making a real difference in the lives of so many children in our community. I remember just what it was like on the night before the first day of school the nerves, the anticipation, the excitement and Ill bet you do too. While I was fortunate to often have new shoes and clothing on the first day of school, my mother was not. She told stories of growing up in poverty: sharing one room with her family of six; having just one toy that she traded for food when there was none at home; and never, ever having appropriate, well-fitting shoes and clothing for school. Im privileged to have the opportunity to make sure thousands of children in the Bay Area do not have to go without basic necessities as my mother did. And Ive been incredibly inspired by you, My New Red Shoes dedicated community of supporters, who make our work possible. Because of you, 3,583 Bay Area homeless children started school this year with a brand new pair of shoes on their feet, new clothing on their backs and the confidence to walk proudly through their school hallways. Imagine them raising their hands more in class, playing sports and participating more fully in the school experience. You helped make that happen. I believe firmly that even the smallest act can have a profound effect, and Ive had the honor of seeing that in action at My New Red Shoes over the last year, through the children we serve and through you. Your commitment to the children we serve has gotten us to where we are today, from serving 354 children in 2006 to reaching more than ten times as many in summer 2011. Your time, the resources you share and your generous gifts keep us strong and vital, so that we can grow to give even more children in need the gift of confidence for school. Im overjoyed to be working side-by-side with all of you, and I cant wait to fill you in on the exciting course were charting moving forward. With more than 5,000 Bay Area children living in shelters and thousands more identified as homeless by area school districts, we have our work cut out for us. In the meantime, please enjoy reviewing how youve made an incredible difference in our community through your support of My New Red Shoes. Thank you for all you do. All the best, Jennifer Yeagley Executive Director

Laura is 15 and has been living

at a shelter for three months. Previously, she lived for several years in a small van with her mother. Laura was so excited to go on a shopping spree at Old Navy! As you may imagine, after living in such extreme poverty for so long, this was a luxurious experience for her. Laura is quite shy, and having new clothes and fabulous new shoes boosted her confidence greatly.

Gabriel is a 10 year-old, fourth

grade boy who has been at a shelter for over two years. Gabriel comes from a family that is not actively involved in his life, and his basic needs are often neglected. As someone who has not often received new clothes and shoes, he was extremely enthusiastic to go shopping for himself. Since most of his wardrobe consists of donated or secondhand items, it often does not suit his style and preference. The Old Navy gift card allowed him to pick out tshirts, jeans and sweaters. To have new clothes and shoes increased his sense of style. He was so proud of how he looked on his first day of school that he came up to many teachers and staff to show off his new wardrobe.

Troy, who is new to San Francisco,

lives in a shelter with his single mother. As his mother works to make a new life for her family in the Bay Area, she depends on CALWORKS and struggles to find resources for Troy, who has special needs. Over the summer, she realized Troy was outgrowing everythinghis shoes were too small and his pants were too short. Thanks to My New Red Shoes, he was able to start the new school year with new clothing and shoes and feels great about his appearance.

Why?
There are more than 5,000 homeless school children living in shelters on any given night in the Bay Area. The difficulty in obtaining and sustaining stable housing, particularly amid the Great Recession and its aftermath, contributes to the grow ing number of homeless families in our region. According to the National Center on Family Homelessness, 40% of the homeless population today is comprised of families with children. Homeless children in particular face significant barriers to education. The Institute for Children and Poverty reports that homeless children are nine times more likely to repeat a grade, four times more likely to drop out of school, and three times more likely to be placed in special education programs than their housed peers. Among the challenges faced by homeless children is a lack of school clothing, and often, this lack of appropriate clothing keeps homeless children out of school. Homeless shelters do not have the budgets to provide school shoes and clothing for their clients, and homeless families struggle to allocate their limited resources toward finding long-term housing. My New Red Shoes allows partner agencies to focus on meeting other basic needs for the families they serve, and enables families to focus on rebuilding their self -sufficiency. My New Red Shoes relies on child, youth and adult volunteers yearround to help us provide thousands of homeless children the gift of confidence for school through shoes and clothing.

Providing Clothing for Confidence

My New Red Shoes provides homeless and very low-income, school-aged children with new shoes, a $50 clothing gift card, a little something spe cial (such as a clothing accessory or school supply) and a handmade card from a local child all in a hand-sewn gift bag. The gift bags are distributed to children in late summer. These gifts enable My New Red Shoes clients to start the school year adequately dressed, confident and ready to learn. In 2010-2011, My New Red Shoes Clothing for Confidence Program: Served 3,583 Bay Area children, 92% of whom were homeless and 8% of whom were from very low-income families. Supported 69 shelters and agencies serving homeless and low-income youth in the 5 Bay Area counties of Alameda, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara and Marin.

Thank you so much for my new shoes. My old shoes were ruined, and my family couldnt get me new shoes. This meant so much to me. Thank you! -Matt

Peter

was living with his mother in a poor country in southeast Asia while his father worked hard to create a better life for them in the United States. After waiting nine years for their immigration paperwork to come through, the family was finally reunited. Peter has been learning English, and he started junior high this fall. He grinned from ear to ear when he opened his cloth bag, cracked open the shoebox and saw his cool new Converse sneakers! Now, Peter is ready to face the challenges of adapting to a new culture with the help of some new clothes that will help him fit in at school.

Clothing for Confidence Champions

Champions host shoe and coin drives, sew gift bags, create first day cards and generate enthusiasm at their companies and organizations for My New Red Shoes mission. NOTES FROM OUR CHAMPIONS:
This is a wonderful organization. To provide a child in our community with the excitement of the first day of school, the fun of going into a department store to show everyone in class your style, your attitude, your individuality. That is so important to a child trying to fit in. To be a part of that is priceless. Corporate Volunteer Today was an unexpected double nice experience. It produced a feeling of unselfishness, that doing is more than money. Corporate Volunteer
