VILAS COUNTY

2012 FIT FOR LIFE

WEEK 3

PRESENTED BY:

Watch the groups weight loss here weekly.

The group lost a total of 24 pounds.

W SPOTLIGHT W
Bobbie Hall Eagle River Weeks loss: 1 lb.
It should be noted that Bobbie has already lost 57 lbs. previous to this competition, so it is more common to plateau at this point. She has already taken measures to bust the plateau by mixing up her training.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST CHALLENGING AT THIS POINT?

John Schuh Phelps
Weeks loss: 8 lbs.

The hardest thing for me is watching what I eat. I find when Im bored at home, I gravitate to the snack cupboard and the refrigerator. Trying to make limited trips is hard, but so far, so good. Ive lost eight pounds so far.

The most challenging has been believing in myself. For so long I couldnt do physical activity that its hard to adjust to the fact I can do it. Also, I need to push myself more when I work out alone. The community has been very supportive, which helps me.
The most challenging at this point for me is not the diet/food part, but rather the sore muscles, muscles I never used before and now I am. I feel good when I wake up and have sore muscles because now I know I am using them and strengthening them. Once I get past this part, I will look forward to the next challenge!

Margaret Rainer Three Lakes

Weeks loss: 4 lbs.

I am excited about my success so far. The toughest part has been the group workouts, but I will push through and get faster and stronger as the weeks go by.
I think the most challenging thing for me is to see that I am not 15 anymore and that I cannot just eat whatever, whenever I want! I am more so working on the food intake and health right now to help eliminate 500 calories a day at least. Being active and working out is something that I enjoy doing.

Tabitha Avery Eagle River

Weeks loss: 4 lbs.

Rochelle Frank Eagle River

Weeks loss: 2 lbs.

Michele Jacobson Eagle River

Weeks loss: 5 lbs.

The most challenging thing for me this last week was organizing meal plans. It takes time to do the planning, shopping, preparing and tracking. However, in doing so, I am starting to see results. It makes it worth planning ahead.

Tuesdays workout was kick boxing. We learned very quickly that the boxer isnt the only one getting a workout. The partner who is holding the punching pad gets quite a workout, too! One of the participants was disappointed about not having weight loss for the week. Wait. No, she wasnt just disappointed, she was ticked! She took it out by boxing and her partner got the brunt of it. Did the partner give up? Heck, no! She couldnt wait to dish it right back when it was her turn to box! The atmosphere in the room was one of dedication and determination. I know they will never give up.

Julias Comment of the Week

This week the contestants really showed their dedication. The weigh-in showed their success and it brought out their competitive side. For motivation and friendly competition, we made two teams. It was fun to see them come up with a motivational phrase for the back of their team T-shirts. Its common to hear them encourage each other and push each other farther. What a great group! Im looking forward to next weeks weigh-in. Julia John

Reflections
By Mary Friedel-Hunt

A bit of introspection
The month is more than half over, and I am wondering if you remember the column I wrote earlier in the month, the one challenging you to ask yourself who you are and who this person is that Shakespeare said you should be true to. I asked in that column what you think it means to be true to yourself and suggested you study the quotes I provided to find a part of the answer. I suggested you ask yourself what you value, hope for, dream about, need, how you treat your friends, and what you believe and added a suggestion to list the most important people in your life. So lets start at the end by listing the most important people in your life. Be they ones you know or ones you admire, you begin to learn more about who you are by identifying these people. For example, I admire Gandhi. That says I value peace, womens rights and the elimination of poverty. These are all things that Gandhi valued. I admired my mom because she demonstrated unconditional love on a daily basis. Martin Luther King is another hero as he lived to eliminate racism.

Academic Success program offers a variety of services

Nicolet Area Technical College will offer assistance to those who wonder if they have the academic skills needed to succeed in earning a college degree through its Academic Success program. Its common for students to feel this way and be a little nervous, said Rose Prunty, dean of Academic Success and University Transfer at Nicolet. But whats most important is that people do not let this stop them from getting the college education that will help them get ahead in life. The Academic Success department is designed specifically to help get students up to speed academically and succeed in college classes. In recent years, Prunty said she has seen an increasing number of adults seeking Academic Success services. Many people lost their jobs and turned to Nicolet to either upgrade their skills or learn new skills in order to get back into the workforce, she added. Many of these people had not been in a classroom for a while. Its understandable that people forget things over that period of time. What we do in Academic Success courses is get them back up to speed. These services are offered for free, or at a cost of $4. As helpful as college prep classes are, they are just one component of many that fall under the broad umbrella of Academic Success, Prunty went on to explain. Another major component of the program is helping students earn their general equivalency diploma (GED) or high school equivalency diploma (HSED). Last year, 160 students earned a GED or HSED through Nicolet. Services are offered on the Rhinelander campus and at nine outreach centers located throughout the Nicolet College district, including Olson Memorial Library in Eagle River. Other Academic Success programs include classes for inmates in county jails and at McNaughton Correctional Center, college academic support services that provide services to assist students, the ADVANCE program where atrisk high school students take classes on the Nicolet campus to meet the graduation requirements of their high schools, and English language classes for students who need to become fluent in English. For more information, contact the Academic Success department at (715) 365-4455, 1-(800) 544-3039, ext. 4455, or academicsuccess@nicoletcollege.edu.

Of course, I admired my husband, Bill, because he was kindness personified among many other traits. I could go on and on, but the goal here is for you to just make a list of your heroes, the folks you admire, your mentors. Then after each name, write what it is you admire in those folks and you will see, in black and white, what you value and seek to emulate in your life, i.e., who you are. I asked you to consider how you treat your friends. Do you reach out to them or wait for them to come to you? Why? Are you open with them? If so, you can pat yourself on your back for being an open person. And what do you dream about doing with your life? I dream about helping people, hence a 40-year career as a therapist and educator. I dream about being very kind, so I know for certain that these are a part of who I am, but perhaps I am in need of some practice. I hope peace will come to our planet someday, that the middle class will not be abolished and that kids who go to bed hungry or lonely will have wonderful food and people who love them. This certainly tells me who I am. What are my weaknesses? Oh, I have a long list. I used to be impatient, but when Bill was so sick and then died, I lost the need to be impatient anymore. Though I need to grow in many areas, the ones I work on the hardest are being present and calm, peaceful and kind. Now, I challenge you to do a bit of introspection and remind yourself of your own gifts, hopes, weaknesses and values. Look at who you are, and then soon I will discuss how to be true to that person. Kohl announces military academy nominations

U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl nominated the following local students for consideration at U.S. military academies for the Class of 2016: Charles Starke of Three Lakes was nominated to the U.S. Military Academy and Nikole Poupart of Lac du Flambeau was nominated to the U.S. Air Force Academy. Our military academies have rigorous academic and personal achievement standards. Our Service Academy Selection Board determined that these individuals have the character and fortitude to succeed in pursing an academy education and lead as future military officers. Im proud to nominate these fine Wisconsin students, Kohl said. Kohl appoints a Service Academy Selection Board, made up of community leaders, other elected officials, former and current military officers and educators, which makes nomination recommendations based on a competitive application process.

Homeless count to take place today

The Northern Wisconsin Initiative to Stop Homelessness Continuum of Care will join anti-homelessness coalitions around the state in completing a local count of individuals and families experiencing homelessness. Staff and volunteers will count persons in shelters the night of Wednesday, Jan. 25, as well as persons residing on the streets, under bridges or similar places not meant for human habitation. The Point In Time count is a statewide initiative, and this is the third year we will be searching for unsheltered individuals in the North Woods, stated Erica Brewster, family living agent for UW-Extension in Oneida County. She explained that teams of volunteers will be in Eagle River, Rhinelander, Minocqua, Crandon, Antigo and other larger communities to locate individuals sleeping in public places. They have requested support from local law enforcement to help identify locations known to be shelters for homeless individuals. This is just one piece in the process of helping identify and assist individuals in crisis, Brewster stated, but its challenging because homelessness has a different face in rural areas. Here, people are often couch surfing or are doubled up in homes meant for single families. Or sleeping in ice fishing shanties or storage units. In 2010, Oneida and Forest counties were among three rural counties with the largest growth in homeless families in the state, as reported by the state Division of Housing. Frederick Place Homeless Shelter in Rhinelander has provided shelter to more than 100 individuals and families since opening Jan. 31, 2011, and has turned away even more. New Hope Shelter in Crandon, a 14-bed shelter that opened in August 2010, has also seen a steady stream of visitors. The collected data will assist the community in understanding the scope and size of local homelessness, engage in programs and service development, and to apply for state and federal funding. Sheltered individuals are now counted monthly. This statewide count occurs twice a year once in January and once in July. For more information, call Lori Hallas at (715) 365-7842 or Brewster at 365-2750.

Second City troupe to perform at Nicolet Theatre Jan. 27

The Second City Laugh Out Loud traveling troupe will perform Friday, Jan. 27, at 7:30 p.m. at the Nicolet Theatre in Rhinelander. The Chicago-based comedic troupe specializes in satirizing just about every aspect of American life, including politics, culture, relationships, pets, family life, growing old, celebrities, sports, fashion and more. I recommend people get their tickets soon, said Nicolet Theatre director Jim Nuttall. This event has always sold out. We book Second City as part of the Nicolet Live! series every other year because they are so popular and there arent that many opportunities to catch their act in our area. Second City serves as the training ground for many of the stars of Saturday Night Live. Its alumni include dozens of famous comedianssuch as John Belushi, Gilda Radner, Dan Ackroyd, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, Tina Fey, John Candy, Stephen Colbert and others. Expanding beyond its single-stage cabaret origins of 50 years ago, Second City has become a diversified entertainment company with stages and training centers in Chicago, Ill.; Toronto, Canada; and Los Angeles, Calif.; six touring companies, and a development company for comedic media in television, film and online. Nuttall said, The actors with the Laugh Out Loud tour have been through the Second City training program and are polishing their craft. The hottest among them will get picked for the Chicago or Toronto stages, or go on to do stand-up comedy, so its an opportunity to catch a glimpse of rising talent. Tickets are $18 and can be purchased in advance at nicoletlive.com, or by calling the box office at (715) 365-4646.

taken from us but never to be forgotten

When tomorrow starts without me and Im not there to see and the sun should rise and find your eyes filled with tears for me, I wish so much you wouldnt cry, the way you did today, while thinking of the many things we didnt get to say. We had so much to live for, so much left to do, it seemed almost impossible that you were leaving us. If I could relive yesterday just even for a while, Id say good-bye and kiss you and maybe see you smile. But then I fully realized that this could never be, for emptiness and memories would take the place of you. But when tomorrow starts without me, please try to understand, that an Angel came and called my name and took me by the hand, and said my place was ready in heaven far above. So when tomorrow starts without me, dont think we are far apart, for every time you think of me, Im right here in your heart. A wonderful, wonderful friend who is loved so much gave me a poem shortly after Jimmy died and although this is not the entire poem, here are a few of those words that helped me get through. I want to thank all of our family and friends who helped us through this past year and continue to do so every day. We Love You All, 8360 Kathy, Mariah & Kelsie

Northland Pines High School (NPHS) will present the musical fable Guys and Dolls in performances scheduled Friday and Saturday, Feb. 10 and 11, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 12, at 2 p.m. in the NPHS auditorium. Directed by NPHS choral director Kate Janssen with assistance from student directors Benn Gober and Taylor Haugen, this will be the third annual musical production at NPHS in recent years. The musical is set in 1949 New York City, and follows a group of gamblers through their tribulations to set up a floating dice games. The two-act musical will involve a cast and crew of 60 NPHS students and a 13-piece pit orchestra. Musical numbers will include Luck Be a Lady, Guys and Dolls, Adelaides Lament, A Bushel and a Peck, If I Were a Bell, and Sit Down, Youre Rocking the Boat. We have a great group of students in cast, crew and pit orchestra this year. They have worked incredibly hard on creating fun, interesting characterizations of the gamblers, in addition to accents, dance numbers and creating a believable group of mid-century New Yorkers, said Janssen. Tryouts were held and rehearsals began in November. Brannigan; juniors Caleb Grosskopf as Benny Southstreet, Joe Lovas as Big Julie, Christian Svetnicka as Arvide Abernathy and Aisha Calix as Gen. Matilda B. Cartwright; and sophomore Mason Hakes as Sky Masterson. The cast has rehearsed each school day for two-and-ahalf hours since November. The students have given up weekend time, completing four Saturday rehearsals, Janssen shared. Our pit orchestra has rehearsed twice a week since December, often staying late just to improve a section. This year, the parents of cast and crew members have been extremely helpful in building and painting sets, providing costumes and volunteering their time, added Janssen. Other key players in the production include choreographer Ann Perry, costume designer Judy Clure, technical director Jeff Janssen, lighting designer Case Kramer, prop manager Cayla Tennikait, stage manager Spencer Gander, sound manager Morgan Munnik and an additional stage crew of eight students. Under the direction of conductor Jennifer Anderson, pit orchestra musicians include Laura Plank on piano; freshman Morgan Tomczyk, flute and piccolo; alumnus James Schwanke, clarinet and alto saxophone; band instructor Brandon Bautz, clarinet and tenor saxophone; senior Perry Camodeca, alto and baritone saxophone; senior Alex Krupka and Joe Chopp, trumpet; senior Dakota Wagner, trombone; junior Sam Puffer, tuba; Margaret Jacobson, Martha Milanowski and Melissa Peter, violin; and freshman Mike Wade, percussion. Ticket sales will begin Wednesday, Feb. 1, in the NPHS office and will be $5 for adults and $2 for seniors and students. Tickets also will be available at the door one hour before the performance, and doors will open 30 minutes prior to the performance. For more information, contact the NPHS office at (715) 479-4473, ext. 1.

This short-order cook has a following! The waiting line often trails outside the door of Joe and Kathy Lass Wolf Pack Caf in St. Germain. Joe is the restaurants short order cook and maintenance man while Kathy is the bookkeeper and dining room manager. When we first met in 1988, I invited him to my house and cooked the most awful meal, Kathy said. Joe told me, From now on, Ill do the cooking and you do the dishes. Twentythree years later, were still doing that. We were eating better at home than going out. Friends recommended we open a restaurant. Though never imagining doing so, that was just the push we needed because we bought this caf in December of 1998 and opened in January. Joe arrives early in the morning, creating soups and gravies plus other entres for breakfast and lunch. In summer, we are busy as soon as the lights go on in the morning. Many customers have been coming back for 13 years, Joe stated. You have to change up things on the menu and invent new things so people arent bored. Keep the favorites, he said. New items are placed on the printed menu if they sell well. Many items Joe

cooks are reminiscent of his childhood. Specialty hamburgers, ground fresh daily, are devoured and breakfast items are inhaled. An array of salads, wildcaught perch and salmon, and homemade pies, chips and fries cut fresh to order are served. Among those breakfast items which are most popular are Lass thin pancakes and Joes breakfast hash browns on the bottom, topped with eggs, gravy and cheese. We sell lots of grits and gravy and have received compliments from Southern residents. Our menu offers vegetarian fare, halves of almost anything, and we can accommodate anyone with special needs, Joe explained. The Lasses serve a benefit breakfast for Angel On My Shoulder. Each year, Gilbert Brown, William Henderson, plus a third Packer have breakfast with 12 to 15 people who offer the winning bid for this worthy benefit. Both Joe and Kathy totally enjoy what they do. The greatest compliment is when people leave and they say, Well see you tomorrow or when they drive six hours from Chicago to have pancakes. A guy handed me a $10 bill and said, Give this to Joe; hes a wonderful cook. We love making customers happy, she expressed.

Childrens museum to offer hands-on approach to science
The Northwoods Childrens Museum will broaden its appeal to older children through its new science program targeted to fourth- and fifth-graders. The classes will be held every Tuesday beginning Feb. 7 through March 27, after school from 3:45 to 5 p.m. at the museum, located in Eagle River. Our science program gets science out of the classroom books and into the hands of the kids, said Rouleen Gartner, executive director. The Science for Kids program will focus on hands-on activities in various aspects of natural and physical science. Each class will highlight a different topic, and children may develop both independent and group skills with a variety of instructors. Topics will include Earths materials, magnetic behavior, electric energy, aquatic invasive species, learning from plants, animal camp, geocaching, and chemical reactions. Children gain a greater understanding of how science affects the world around them, said Gartner, when they learn from people who are experts in their field who draw on real-life experiences. Students from Northland Pines-Eagle River Elementary School can take a bus directly from school to the museum. Class size is limited to ensure that more attention is paid to each student. Cost is $40 per child and will include a snack and playtime in the museum prior to class. Preregistration is required by calling the museum at (715) 479-4623.

ERMH Auxiliary donates $50,000

Auxiliary - Partners of Ministry Eagle River Memorial Hospital recently donated $50,000 to the Howard Young Foundation. The donation will benefit health-related services at Ministry Eagle River Memorial Hospital (MERMH). The auxiliary raises money throughout the year through sales at the Hospital Gift Shop and the Auxiliary Thrift Shop, located at 209 E. Pine St. in Eagle River. This donation to the Howard Young Foundation was made possible, thanks to our loyal customers, and the countless hours our volunteers dedicate to the auxiliary, said Peggy Lambert, auxiliary president. It means a great deal to our volunteers to be able to give this gift to the hospital and the community. In December, MERMH began using a new ambulance, which was purchased with a separate donation of $50,000 from the auxiliary. The state-of-the-art ambulance is equipped with the latest critica-care technology including Lifenet. With the push of a button, Lifenet allows emergency medical technicians to transmit a heart attack patients electrocardiogram directly to the hospitals emergency department. The 2011 Chevy 4500 ambulance also features all LED lights inside and out, a dual-tone siren and air horns. The hospitals old ambulance was donated to Nicolet College in Rhinelander. We are thrilled to add this ambulance to our existing emergency resources in the Eagle River community, said Sheila Clough, president, Ministry Howard Young Health Care. Howard Young Foundation Inc. is a quasi-independent philanthropic, not-for-profit charitable corporation. The primary purpose of the foundation is to actively seek and invest charitable support for MERMH, Howard Young Medical Center and Dr. Kate Home Health Hospice. Because of inadequate reimbursements from Medicare and Medicaid programs, our hospitals must rely on philanthropic support to assure the high quality of care our residents and visitors expect and deserve, said John Lund, president of the foundation. To make a donation toward the purchase of this new ambulance, call the foundation at (715) 356-8096.

Singers prepare for spring concerts

The Northwoods Singers and the Northwoods Youth Choir will begin rehearsals for a series of spring concerts in the area. The adult singers will meet each Tuesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at First Congregational United Church of Christ, located at 105 N. First St. in Eagle River. Ride sharing is encouraged and can be arranged. The youth songsters will set their own schedule, in keeping with school activities and in keeping with the directors itinerary. New singers and returning singers are welcome. Each singer is asked to share in the cost of the music, although scholarship funds are available. In these difficult times, no one should refrain from joining because of lack of funds, said Barbara Nehring, spokeswoman. The groups will perform at least two concerts this coming May. Dates will be confirmed. The Northwoods Singers and the Northwoods Youth Choir are communitywide choral groups under the direction of Dr. Pamalyn Lee of Land O Lakes. Past singers have hailed from Eagle River, Rhinelander, Sugar Camp, Three Lakes, Woodruff, Minocqua, St. Germain, Sayner, Conover, Land O Lakes, and Watersmeet and Iron River in Michigan. Adult singers are expected to be able to read music and attend as many rehearsals as possible, with absences to be excused. Both groups are open to those interested in improving their own choral skills and increasing the appreciation of choral music in the North Woods. There are no official tryouts for the adult singers, but youth group singers must check in with the director. For more information, contact Nehring at (715) 5473333 or tradingpostint@gmail.com.
