BUNKERING PROCEDURE:

The procedure for taking bunker starts with the planning of amount of bunker to be taken along with which tanks have to be loaded. This is done by the Chief Engineer after consulting the Chief Officer and Third Engineer. Prior to receiving bunkers a Pre-Bunker meeting is held with all the ship staff where everyone is notified of the quantity being received, the tanks that will be filled, the sequence in which they will be filled, their duties and all the necessary precautions to be taken.

After the barge is alongside and secured the communication signals are established. All shipboard and barge fuel oil tanks are sounded manually by the Third Engineer in the presence of the Bunker Surveyor to establish the initial quantities on both the vessels. The pumping rate is agreed upon. Once the pipe and sampling flange have been fitted on the manifold and valves lined up, the Chief Engineer inspects them all. Pumping is started at a slow rate and once it has been confirmed that there are no leakages and that by the soundings that the oil is being received, pumping is started at full capacity. During final topping up the pumping rate is again slowed. After completion of bunkers, all the tanks are sounded and the quantity received is calculated. The bunker delivery note is then signed by the Chief Engineer for the received quantity. The lines are disconnected and the barge is cast off.

The following procedures serve as a guideline for any bunkering operation: PRE-BUNKERING: 1] Bunkering Operation Note prepared & signed. Copies given to staff mentioned on the form. 2] Chief Officer confirms final draft & trim is acceptable & no ballast, de-ballasting or Page 13
