Were all doomed, I tell ye, doomed!

was the iconic catch-phrase of Corporal Fraser, the dour Scottish undertaker from Dads Army, written by David Croft who died recently. Corporal Fraser would have had a wonderful time today if he were able to comment on the current political and economic mess facing our country at the moment.
Revd. Bob Politt

On the study wall of a colleague of mine I recall seeing a poster which read: One day, as I sat musing, sad and lonely and without a friend, a

voice came to me from out of the gloom saying: Cheer up, things could be worse. So, I cheered up and sure enough, things got worse.
Are things so bad? Well, the crisis facing our nation and the world economy at this time is very serious and at the moment nobody appears to be able to see a way out, at least not one that is acceptable. As we turn on the radio and TV and hear yet more discouraging news lets be aware of the effect this is having on our own lives. Many people live with crisis every day and sometimes the unthinkable happens. Then what do we do? At our recent Mens Breakfast we met Christine and Brian, now retired from AWE, who visit three little villages in Uganda each year to help build facilities for local schools which are made mostly of mud. The villagers have next to nothing materially, yet are people rich in joy and hope which is the opposite condition of so many people in our own country, who appear to be experiencing spiritual poverty. Jeremiah is the Corporal Fraser of the Old Testament prophets and with good reason for in 597BC his city, Jerusalem, was about to be destroyed by the Babylonians. At which point God told him to go and buy a piece of land as a sign of hope because one day God would restore all that was about to be lost. At the darkest moment in his life he wrote these memorable words about God: Your love comes new every morning from which we get one of my favourite hymns, Great is Thy faithfulness. After the storm comes the calm, as it always does Christian greetings,

Percy Sims We would like to thank everybody from the village, and those near and far, for their participation in the Service of Thanksgiving to celebrate Dad's life - it was really overwhelming to see so many people at St Leonard's and to hear all the tributes paid to Dad. Dad's faith, the Church and Sherfield village were the cornerstones of his life. and we are really pleased that an amazing sum of just under 700 was raised in Dad's memory which is going to a project very close to his heart - the St Leonard's Church Extension Fund. We would particularly like to thank the Revd Bob Politt for his help and guidance during this difficult time for us all. Valerie, Chris, and Mick Percy Sims Daisy and the family would like to express their sincere thanks for the kindness shown and messages of sympathy received, on the loss of Percy. We would also like to offer our appreciation to all those who attended the funeral and for donations given to St. Leonards Church in Percys memory Thank You. Daisy and the family

Special Advent Communion at St Leonards

Once again we will offer three short mid-week communion services during the weeks leading up to Christmas. Advent means coming especially a coming that is awaited. It has a double focus, past and future. We affirm that Christ has come, that He is present in the world today, and we are reminded that He will come again in power. The rich symbolism and meanings of Advent will help us challenge, as well as value and enjoy, the world Christ comes to save. During the business of Christmas use these brief services to think about the why of Christmas. Wednesdays at 11.00 - 11.30am 30th November, 7th December, 14th December

Prayer and Reflection Text for the month 2 Corinthians 10 : 3 & 4 For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds Prayer for the Month. Loving God, we are reminded at this time how easy it is to speak of peace but how difficult it is to achieve it, how easy to talk of breaking down barriers, yet how demanding it is to live as a peacemaker. We confess there are things within us which make for conflict; our pride, our greed, our envy, our impatience, our unwillingness to forgive and most of all our selfishness. Rescue us and the world from all that keeps us apart. Put within us a new spirit of love and openness, of acceptance and understanding, of healing and reconciliation. Help us to be instruments of peace bringing healing and harmony in every situation. In Jesus name we pray. Amen Prayer Points for November Pray for our soldiers striving to bring peace to Afghanistan and for their families living with the daily uncertainties and anxieties of what could happen and for all people for whom this month brings back sad memories Pray for our own country at this time of anxieties and worries, for those who are uncertain of what the future holds for them and those faced with decisions who do not know the way to go forward. Pray for all in our villages who are unwell that they may receive the help, support and encouragement they need and for those who feel isolated and lonely on the dark winter evenings.

From Sherfield-on-Loddon Parish Council

Changes to bus service There have been changes to the local number 14 bus service with effect from 30th October involving the times and routes. One of the major changes to the route is that it no longer travels via the hospital so those wishing to visit there will need to change buses at the bus station. Details of the changes may be found at: www.stagecoach.com or by phoning 0871 200 2233. Closure of the Post Office As many parishioners will be aware, the local post office will be closing towards the end of December when the current postmaster retires. The Post Office has assured the parish council that it is committed to retaining a facility in the village and is currently looking at options for this. One option would be for a local retailer/business to run a Post Office Local from suitable premises. Any village business interested in this should contact the parish clerk. Village Design Statement A Village Design Statement (VDS) is a document detailing the visual character of the village and demonstrates how local character and distinctiveness can be protected and enhanced in new development. It is an important document in the planning process and is produced entirely by local people so is representative of the views of the village as a whole. The parish council would like to invite anyone interested in taking part in the production of a VDS to contact the clerk to register this. Although the parish council may initiate the process, it cannot produce the document itself so, if you value the special qualities of your village, then please come forward. Full details and copies of other villages VDS may be found at: http://www.basingstoke.gov.uk/browse/environment-and-planning/ planning/leaflets/villagedesigns.htm The next Sherfield-on-Loddon Parish Council meeting will be on Wednesday 19 November 2011 at 7.30pm in the Liddell Hall all welcome! Life isnt tidy and one of the strengths of our Church is that we dont mind getting messy! Messy Church is a monthly opportunity for families to enjoy being together, making things together, eating things together and celebrating God together. All are welcome: children, parents grandparents, greatgrandparents, carers, aunts uncles and friends. The session will run something like this:4.15pmarrive and register, have a drink and a biscuit 4.30pmCraft activities (on a Posada theme) 5.00pm Worship, ending with Messy Grace 5.15pm Food! If you would like to come along please give us a little warning by contacting Jody Taylor on 01256

Our October meeting was our Harvest Festival Service taken by the Rev. Politt. Peggy Willson played the organ accompanied by the vicar on his trumpet for the singing of the hymns. A collection was taken and donated towards the church extension fund. After tea and biscuits an auction was held of the harvest festival gifts which included home grown produce and home baking. The members also enjoyed an outing to Millets Farm in Oxfordshire in September. On arrival we all headed towards the restaurant for a coffee, then we explored the other facilities which included a farm shop, garden centre, craft gallery and farm animal zoo. We also enjoyed lunch in the restaurant. The weather was rather windy with rain showers at times but despite this it was an enjoyable outing. Page 19

Sheena Archer It is with great regret that Sheena has stood down from the committee, due to pressure of work and ill health, for which we wish her a speedy recovery. She was a very active member of our committee as well as a hard working, dedicated and innovative editor, and we thank her for all the many contributions she made to the magazine over the years. As well as her involvement as editor, she was very much a force, behind the scenes in projects such as Percys Plant Sale and the Strawberry Teas for all the magazine helpers, and we hope in the future that Sheena will remain close to the activities of the Link, yet have time to focus on the other interests of her life. Thank you Sheena. Donald Dawson. Chair of the LVL Committee

ANNUAL TOY SERVICE

10am Sunday 27th November Advent Sunday at St Leonards Church
Each year we invite you to donate new (as good as new) toys, games, clothes or Christmas gifts for young people aged from 0 to 16 years. All the gifts we receive are given to local children in need. If donating used toys they must be in as new condition. Because of Health and Safety legislation each toy now has to be checked and for this reason we have been asked to leave gifts unwrapped but you are welcome to donate wrapping with your gift. If you have large items that you would like collected, or toys to pass on but are unable to attend the service, please let me know and I will arrange for collection. With thanks for all your support and generosity. Revd Bob Politt

Running for the Loos!

by Claire and Guy Osborne There we were, back in February, wondering how we could partake in the Talents Scheme that St. Leonards Church was running. The idea being that you take 10 and grow it as a fundraising effort for the Extension Project to build a hall and toilet facilities for the church. We decided we would give ourselves a challenge and take part in the first ever Basingstoke Half Marathon and ask friends and family to sponsor us. Signing up was easy enough but then came the realisation that, with neither of us being runners or even particularly fit, we would need to do some serious training. What followed was seven long months of pounding the pavements of Chineham at silly hours of the day and night to fit around our jobs and the schedules of our three children. As the date drew nearer we began to feel reasonably confident that we had a chance of completing this 13.1 mile run. Then our running numbers arrived in the post along with the course details. Our hearts sank when we saw the numerous hills we would be facing. At least Autumn is suitably cool, we thought to ourselves but as we were to discover, the British summer decided to finally arrive that weekend and it was the hottest day ever recorded in October! Just our luck. So we found ourselves joining the throng of 1300 nervous and excited participants at the starting line in Memorial Park on Sunday 3rd October, telling each other wed be fine despite the look of worry and concern on both our parents and kids faces as we waved them goodbye. At 11am our 13.1 mile run for the loos commenced and unseasonable heat wave and several long hilly climbs aside, it turned out to be a spectacular adventure. The spectators along the way were fantastic, not only cheering us all on but handing out cups of water, waving flags, playing music and spraying us with garden hoses and water guns to cool us down. Their support was incredible and made an enormous difference keeping us all going. There was a great atmosphere and an amazing sense of community spirit. We felt really proud of Basingstoke. The camaraderie amongst the runners was also wonderful. There was a strong sense of encouraging and looking
Page 24

out for one another, particularly as the race drew on and a few people struggled in the heat. It was also lovely to see that so many different charities were being supported on the day, there was a real sense of running for many good causes. There were endless volunteers and marshals along the way too, all who deserved medals as much as the runners and we have to take our hats off to all those behind-the-scenes as this really was a brilliantly organised event. For example, all runners were equipped with their own shoe chips to gain accurate race times and there was even a free postrace massage for all participants! The course was particularly challenging even for the more experienced runners but the silver lining had to be the stunning scenery as we ran through Cliddesden, Ellisfield and Farleigh Wallop. The view across Basingstoke at the 10 mile mark at the top of Farleigh Hill was absolutely spectacular. Finally, after two and a half hours we were very relieved, to say the least, to arrive back in Memorial Park and across the finish line. Its true to say that we could barely walk back to the car but we felt such an immense sense of achievement at finishing the race and also of being part of a very special local event. Wed like to thank all those who have been kind enough to spend a penny and sponsor us on our Half Marathon adventure. The figure we have raised is close to 1500 for which we are absolutely delighted. So the question is, will we do it again next year? Watch this space. Percy Sims - 6th Sept 1919 - 6th Sept 2011 A part of Sherfields History
Percys long involvement with St. Leonards Church started as a schoolboy in the choir, when for 11 years, he sang a solo each Easter Sunday. At the age of 18 he was elected to the Parochial Church Council, which he served for the next 70 years. He was church warden for 20 years and treasurer for a further 10 years. His time as church warden coincided with an ongoing restoration programme, starting in 1953 with the electric lights and over the following 12 years involved repairs to the roof, electric heating, drainage, floors, walls and ceiling. In 1972 the shingles on the spire were replaced, using Canadian red cedar (oak shingles were not available at the time) and Percys sponsored and signed tile was put in place with many others. This tile was handed back to Percy in 2006 when the shingles had to be replaced once more. As treasurer, Percy saw the PCC through some challenging times and skilfully looked after the finances and kept spending under control. He saw the future growth of the church with more involvement of the young families, and fully supported the service changes to make the church more user friendly to the younger generation. He was involved with the Loddon Valley Link right from the start with Revd. James Anderson in 1971, and during the 1980s kept the magazine going almost single handed as editor, printer, collator and treasurer. Always an active fundraiser Percys Plant Sale typified his love of the garden and his desire to raise money for the church. Outside of his church activities, Percy was equally involved with village life. At the age of 17 he arranged a fete to raise money for a new roof for the Village hall. He later served on the Village Hall Committee as vice-chairman and chairman, and on the Parish Council as Parish Clerk, vice-chairman and chairman. His long and tireless
Page 26

work was recognised by the presentation of the Basingstoke Long Service Award. It is unlikely the village or the church will ever again see such devotion and dedication of service over such a long time. His knowledge of the village over the last 100 years was unsurpassed. He served God, the Church and the Community for over 80 years. We send our sincere condolences to his widow Daisy and all his family, and we give thanks to God for his service to the community. Donald Dawson ROY BEST Roy took on the role of Church warden in 2000. It was out of his love and concern for Stratfield Saye that he committed himself yet another task. He took on the role in spite of knowing that he was facing a huge duty and, in typical Roy fashion, he did it with his usual enthusiasm and determination. He strove to raise money for the church by organising a variety of fund raising events, in particular the clay pigeon shoots and the walk in the park. He was always ready to introduce change if he thought it would bring more people to the services. One example was the choir from Yateley Manor School who accompanied our Matins service in October of last year, an event which he greatly enjoyed. However, his greatest pleasure was seeing the success of the Family Service, which he persuaded us to hold on the first Sunday of the month. His own family played a large part in the service and he was always proud of them,

particularly Matt and Nick, one of whom he would persuade to read the lesson for the day. He delighted in watching the faces of the children as they responded to the speaker. His delight in what he saw made him ask me to give the talks with the children facing the congregation and me with my back to it. We compromised with a half and half situation and each Sunday as long as he was fit enough to do so, Roy would stand next to his pew watching over the children like a farmer guarding his chicks. Basingstoke Concert Band has over 40 playing members and they rehearse every Wednesday evening at the Village Hall. On Sunday 18th September they treated the village to a splendid afternoon concert of fantastic proms, show and film music. Unfortunately the weather wasnt kind but the appreciative audience did manage to eat their picnics in the hall garden in between the showers! Ongoing Refurbishment. The entrance hall has now been redecorated in a lighter shade and we are awaiting the arrival of a literature rack for marketing material. Outside, the garden has been extended and landscaping work is in progress. Sherfield Beer Festival on September 24th was a great success with well over 800 people demolishing 37 casks of beer and 7 of cider. All money raised is going to St Michaels Hospice and Sherfield Village Hall. Next years festival is already being planned for September 29th, 2012. Loddon Players will be performing a Murder Mystery Play on Thurs 24th, Fri 25th & Sat 26th November. The evening will include a light supper, a fun quiz, raffle and prize giving for the team who correctly guesses "whodunnit". Box Office: 880224. Village Dinner Dance Local support is essential for the upkeep of our lovely old Hall so please book your tickets now for the village dinner dance on Saturday 10th December. Super evening, Great atmosphere were just some of the comments from those attending last years event. Tickets 30 from 882881 or 881498. THE WOMENS INSTITUTE

Reported by Ilene Iles

Dee Bulpitt started our October Meeting by welcoming everyone and introducing Natalie Larner who encouraged us to attend the fund-raising event for the Village Hall on the 21st October Music from the Shows with a light supper. Jerusalem was sung, the Minutes of the previous Meeting read by Ilene Iles and signed by Dee, followed by Val Denny with the correspondence. Evelyn Holdaway gave the Treasurers Report and Val asked those going to Bletchley Park to be at the White Hart at 9.30 a.m. on the 11th October. She suggested people wear sensible footwear and clothing to cope with sites inside and out. Dee mentioned that, as there is so little support for the monthly walk, this will be discontinued and Val mentioned that she had 3 tickets for the Autumn Council Meeting at the Anvil on the 18th October to hand out. If anyone needed a lift they were to contact Val or Dee after our Speaker. Dee advised those present that she and Tess had attended the Village Hall Committee Meeting and gave those present a report on the proceedings. Several other matters were discussed and the Business Meeting closed at 3 p.m. Dee then introduced our Speaker for the afternoon Mrs Jina Ireland M.B.E. whose subject was Women in Prison. Mrs Ireland started her talk by advising us that she was an ex-Prison Officer and joined the Service at the age of 45. She trained at Holloway and served for 17 years. The first 5 or 6 years were with male prisoners in Winchester and then she was involved with female prisoners. Mrs Ireland said that the best advice she was given was to forget why the prisoners were there; they had already been judged; and to treat them as you would expect to be treated. Out of 140 prisons in the U.K. there are 14 for females. At the 30th September there were 86751 persons in prison 82495 men and 4256 women, at a cost of 40,000 per person per year plus families on benefits. We were given lots of facts and figures concerning prisoners and details of 3 quite harrowing cases. which seemed to stem from abuse in childhood. Mrs Ireland also advised us that she had met Myra Hindley and Rosemary West. Mrs Ireland answered several questions at the end of her talk and the vote of thanks was given by Helen Rolton. It was a very interesting and revealing talk about a difficult subject. Page 33

Report by Gill Fearon

In November we have two meetings our book evening and the telephone quiz. Our October meeting has become (owing to its popularity) our annual music evening. We try to keep to our theme, so as this year it is Around the World, we tried to choose international music, or music which reminded us of being in other countries.
One of the first was from France, Francoise Hardys All Over The World, a lovely song from the 60s and very apt! From South America we had Missa Criolla and some music from the film The Mission called On Earth as it is in Heaven, a beautiful piece. We also listened to some panpipe music called Condor, from Voices of the Andes. From Africa, or with an African theme, was Paul Simons Homeless, Missa Luba and some pieces from Mauritius and Madagascar. Some of us had memories to accompany our choices and one member who had lived in Malta in the late 50s explained that they were not allowed radios, so had piped music to listen to and one song in particular that she remembers is Volari which we listened to sung by Dean Martin. Another member said that she dreamed of driving down the Californian coast in a Cadillac which inspired California Dreamin! We preferred the Mamas and Papas version to the Beach Boys! On this same note we enjoyed San Francisco by Scott McKenzie. Scotland and Wales featured in our choices too. From Scotland we listened to Loch Lomand by Runrig and from Wales, the lovely Treorchy Male Voice Choir singing Calon Lan. Football fans might remember that Italy hosted the World Cup in 1990 and that the signature tune to the matches was Pavorottis Nessun Dorma which almost coincided with one members honeymoon in Italy. Another wedding connection inspired Zorba the Greek by Mikis Theodorakis. From Spain we listened to La Bamba by Los Lobos and a trip to the Caribbean inspired Island in the Sun by Harry Belafonte. A Polish childhood was remembered by Poppies in Monte Casino which was performed by the Polish National Philharmonic. Whilst we enjoyed listening, we also liked to join in (with apologies to the local cats!) and Que Sera Sera by Doris Day was a particular favourite! There are far too many songs to note them all, but some artists included Frank Sinatra, John Lennon, Neil Diamond and Matt Monro.

Sherfield and District Gardening Club

We have a packed schedule of speakers planned for the rest of 2011 and beyond. Anyone interested in gardening will be most welcome to join us at the Sherfield Village Hall at 7:30pm On Monday 21st November Susan Campbell will talk about The History of the Walled Garden. Susan has been researching the history of the walled kitchen garden for over 20 years. She has personally visited and photographed nearly 400 walled kitchen gardens in the UK and abroad, and is a foremost authority on the subject. She lectures and advises professionally and is currently recording the National Trust's restoration of the kitchen gardens and glasshouses at Tatton Park, for a book. There will be no talk on Monday 19th December. Instead we have our Christmas party. Always a fun event with a light hearted quiz, nibbles and possibly a glass of wine or two.

SCAM LETTERS Letters are being received by residents in Sherfield on Loddon which are a scam aimed at obtaining peoples bank details. Similar scams are also occurring by way of e-mail. One such scam asks for money to be sent, suggesting that a family member has been taken ill and funds are required for hospital treatment. Another informs the recipient that they may be related to someone who has died intestate and could be due some money. They request bank details in order for the inheritance to be transferred. These scams have been in existence for some time and it is strongly suggested that people check any correspondence they receive, either by letter or by e-mail, VERY CAREFULLY, and do not send their bank details to any previously unknown source.
