Papa Smurf is a cult leader, hot headed and angry in private yet sweet and paternal in the open

as a cover for his patriarchal serfdom.

He's a highly skilled alchemist, controlling the minds and subjegating the masses of smurfs through the consumption of "Smurfberries" and their leaves which sends them into an altered state of conciousness and awareness which heightens the effects of Papa Smurf's magic elixirs and potions.He's tricked them into believing they live a peaceful, communal utopian existence seperated from the wickedness of the "Cursed Land" thus keeping them secluded from the outside world. It is alleged that Papa Smurf is a self-loathing closeted homosexual smurf, which would explain the absence of female smurfs yet the sudden and unexplained appearance later on of a Granny Smurf.

The Smurf society under the leadership and guidance of Papa Smurf is highly homophobic, sexist, xenophobic, and have a deep hatred for human beings, Gargamel in particular. Is it that Gargamel is really an evil wizard as Papa Smurf alleges or is it that Gargamel is working in order to free the smurfs from the control of Papa Smurf? For instance, if Gargamel wasnt trying to free and deprogram the smurfs, and instead wanted to eat them and turn them into gold as the stories Papa Smurf has told the village allege, why does he help the smurfs when they reach out to him?

Another issue is the creation of Smurfette. Smurfette was created by Gargamel, this much is true. However, the original motive behind her creation is full of misinformation and furthers the myth of Gargamel as evil henchman and not liberator. Smurfette was to join smurf village, introduce the idea that Papa Smurf was not all powerful and they didnt need his control in order to live their communal utopian existence. When Papa Smurf discovered this, he had her indoctrinated in the same way he did the other smurfs, Papa Smurf took pity on her and took her to his laboratory, where they locked themselves in while he cast spells, including infusing her with moonbeams, before emerging. He even altered her appearance to suit his taste, perhaps as a reflection of what he wished he looked like. Though the village now had a female, she was a source of divide amongst the smurfs and was ultimately driven out of the male dominated society.

One example of her sowing good in the village however is her seemingly semideprogramming of Grouchy Smurf who falls in love with Smurfette.

In conclusion, it is this investigators belief that the happy-go-lucky propaganda the Papa Smurf has created and the smurf villagers have disseminated is not all it seems to be.
