I. TITLE: The Odyssey II. AUTHOR: Homer III.

SETTING:
Aiaia (Aeaea): The island home of one Circe, everyones favorite sorceress. Aiolia: The island ruled by Aiolos, god of the winds. Elysion: The Odysseys version of a heavenly afterlife. Ithaka: You know what Ithaka is. And how Odysseus made it home there by the longest route ever. Ismaros: The first place Odysseus and his men land after leaving Troy. This is the land of the Kikonians, whom the Ithakans plunder until driven from their shores. Lakedaimon: Another name for Sparta. (Technically, this refers to the surrounding area of which Sparta is the capital.) Lamos: The land of the Laistrygones, the giant/ogres/weirdos, and King Antiphates, drinker of blood. Needless to say, Odysseus and the Ithakans leave this place pretty quickly. Well, except for that one guy who was chugged by Antiphates. Mount Parnassos (Parnassus): Where Odysseus goes hunting with his uncle when hes a little boy. This is where the boar/thigh-scar incident took place. Mount Olympos (Olympus): The gods hangout/home/pad. Ogygia: Kalypsos island, where Odysseus is held for seven years. Pherai: Telemachos and Peisistratos spend the night here on the way to Pylos from Sparta. Pylos: The first place Telemachos travels in his search for news of his father.

IV. CHARACTER:
Telemachus - Odysseuss son. An infant when Odysseus left for Troy, Telemachus is about twenty at the beginning of the story. Penelope - Wife of Odysseus and mother of Telemachus. Penelope spends her days in the palace pining for the husband who left for Troy twenty years earlier and never returned. Athena - Daughter of Zeus and goddess of wisdom, purposeful battle, and the womanly arts. Poseidon - God of the sea. As the suitors are Odysseuss mortal antagonists, Poseidon is his divine antagonist. He despises Odysseus for blinding his son, the Cyclops Polyphemus, and constantly hampers his journey home. Zeus - King of gods and men, who mediates the disputes of the gods on Mount Olympus. Antinous - The most arrogant of Penelopes suitors. Antinous leads the campaign to have Telemachus killed. Eurymachus - A manipulative, deceitful suitor. Eurymachuss charisma and duplicity allow him to exert some influence over the other suitors. Amphinomus - Among the dozens of suitors, the only decent man seeking Penelopes hand in marriage. Eumaeus - The loyal shepherd who, along with the cowherd Philoetius, helps Odysseus reclaim his throne after his return to Ithaca. Eurycleia - The aged and loyal servant who nursed Odysseus and Telemachus when they were babies. Eurycleia is well informed about palace intrigues and serves as confidante to her masters. Calypso - The beautiful nymph who falls in love with Odysseus when he lands on her island-home of Ogygia. Melantho - Sister of Melanthius and maidservant in Odysseuss palace. Polyphemus - One of the Cyclopes (uncivilized one-eyed giants) whose island Odysseus comes to soon after leaving Troy. Laertes - Odysseuss aging father, who resides on a farm in Ithaca

V. PLOT:
Conflict - The conflict stage begins when we finally see change from what has, for seven years or so, been the status quo. Much of this change has to do with divine intervention; Zeus sends his messenger to force Kalypso into letting Odysseus leave and Athene convinces Telemachos to go on his trip seeking news of his father. The conflict, then, is in Odysseuss struggle to return home and in Telemachoss search for his dad. Complication- OK, so we all know Odysseus going straight home just isnt in the cards. As it happens, Poseidon whips up one more big storm to drive Odysseus onto the coast of the Phaiakians. In their court, he tells of all his adventures up to this point. Of course, the complications he tells about happened before the main epic begins but, interestingly, Homer presents them at the time of the classic complication stage. In the meantime, Telemachos has been asking all the main Greek heroes, but hasnt been able to find his dad. Climax - When Odysseus arrives home, it represents the culmination of the initial phase of the story, in which he was wandering around looking for home. It will all be downhill from here. Have you ever tried running downhill? You think skiers have it easy? Thats right, the homestretch is where youre likely to break your neck. As a result, the climax of the Odyssey only prepares us for the next stage Denouement - By stringing the bow, winning the arrow-shooting contest, and killing the suitors (with a little help from Telemachos, Eumaios, Philoitios, and the goddess Athene), Odysseus takes care of the major problem facing him on the home front. That night, he goes to sleep with Penelope in their bed; the dramatic resolution is signaled by the fact that they tell stories about what has happened since they last saw each other. Conclusion - Fearing retribution from the families of the suitors, Odysseus and Telemachos go to the countryside to see Laertes. Odysseus and Laertes have a tearful reunion. When the families of the suitors come, Odysseus, Laertes, and Telemachos, along with some guys who work on Laertess farm, arm for battle and face them down. They kill a few of them, but then Athene shouts out from the heavens and Zeus thunders.

VI. Friction:
The first lesson was to not taunt people. After Odysseus and his crew had escaped from the Cyclops, Odysseus decided to tease him. Odysseus had told Cyclops who it was that took his eye. Along with giving the blinded, one-eyed monster his name, Odysseus told him his home was on Ithaca. With this information, Cyclops prayed to Poseidon, the god of the sea. Cyclops prayed for Odysseus to lose all his companions and return to bitter days at home. Another lesson was to listen to what you were told to do. When they landed on
