Tenzin Kyizom Radio, Blk 2 09/25/2011 John Lennon Essay Political music has always existed.

But many just simply ignored them or didn't pay much attention. Maybe it was because the time wasn't right, or the situations were not entirely in correspondence with the music. However, ever since John Lennon and Yoko Ono had stepped up and made even the most ignorant man pay attention, political music took a stance; and it caused huge headlines. Lennon was a singer of The Beatles; he had fallen in love with America, found his wifeYoko Ono yet he could not understand the government. Nixon and his administration took unnecessary measures that not only affected their reputation, but stole the lives of the innocent men and women in Vietnam. All John Lennon truly wanted was- love, peace and unity. To live in unity, one needs to be in peace and only then, can someone love honestly. Lennon was already a very popular singer and after his speeches, lectures and his opinions about anti-war, he had stirred a major commotion. Many men, women and youths followed his voice (anti-war, peace) and called it quits for Vietnam War. Lennon produced political music that went against what the government at that time were implying. His songs such as Give Peace A Chance and Imagine were banned by the BBC. Quite some songs of The Beatles were also banned due to references to drugs, Christ and politics. Nixon named Lennon as a serious threat but word has it that Nixon was jealous and nervous of the fact that Lennon and his Anti-War Movement would soon rule Nixon over. Music has taken huge turnouts in the past 40-50 years. Theres not much music that is similar to the reaction that Lennons' produced. It was revolutionary and very effective. These days, such music are not produced; or at least, are not very effective. They don't grasp the peoples heart and very few

actually make a ignorant person actually turn their heads to listen.

I know a few musicians that write and sing about anti-war, anti-government corruption and so on: Coldplay Bob Marley Steve Wonders Pink Green Day Eminem The Cranberries Eminem, Pink, Green Day and Coldplay have created quite a few controversies that were AntiBush and about corruption in politics. Many of them were censored including a South Korean Hip Hop group known as Epik High (one graduated from Stanford with a law degree). They based a whole album against the corruption in government and were censored throughout. I believe as a citizen we all play roles in our community. Everyone has a freedom to voice their opinions however, anything that harms one another is not a community movement.
