Four Immune-Supporting Supplements Every Lyme Sufferer Needs To Know AboutAnd Where to Buy Them
By Bryan Rosner
Note: This report is easier to read and interact with if you print it.

Introduction
One of the most important aspects of developing a Lyme Disease treatment protocol is to strengthen and restore the immune system. This may seem obvious -- Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection, so it naturally follows that the immune system must kick into gear to uproot and defeat the infection. What is less obvious is the fact that Lyme Disease causes even more immune system dysfunction than other types of infections. Lyme Disease bacteria can literally evade and "shut down" the immune system. The bacteria can convince the body to live in harmony with the infection. Once this occurs, chronic Lyme Disease is the result, and the bacterial infection can persist for weeks, months, or years. Unfortunately, boosting the immune system is not enough to eradicate Lyme Disease. Instead, a Lyme sufferer must employ a carefully planned and comprehensive treatment plan that covers all of the different aspects of the Lyme Disease complex. Establishing such a treatment plan is the focus of the two books I have written (Lyme Disease and Rife Machines and The Top 10 Lyme Disease Treatments). Although strengthening the immune system is not the complete answer, it is part of the answer. Hence, as new immune-boosting therapies began to emerge, I felt it necessary to produce this article, the purpose of which is to update my readers on cutting edge methods of increasing immune response against the Lyme Disease infection. Boosting the immune system is not the complete solution, but it is a big part of the answer.

As you have probably noticed in my books, I generally like to talk about therapies that are convenient, affordable, practical, and patientfriendly. This has not changed. Consequently, the following immune-boosting therapies are quite easy to implement into your current treatment plan.

9 pagesDocument 102page 2
After the break, you can begin to take the next immune-stimulating supplement, for example, Host Defense (which you will also read about in a few pages). This supplement can be used according to the same guidelines described above. Similarly, each additional therapy can also be used in the same fashion, with a period of application followed by a break. After you use each therapy and it loses its effect, you should not use that therapy again for a while. Typically, after about a year, each therapy will again have renewed effect. So, you should consider rotating through your list of supplements approximately once a year. This rule applies to most all supplements, not just those discussed in this article. For more information on using therapies on a rotational basis, download article 101 at http://www.lymebook.com/articlelibrary. Now, let's move on to explore the specific immune-stimulating supplements this article will introduce you to.

How should the therapies be used?

How should these supplements and interventions be employed? Should they be used all at the same time? Should they be used continuously or intermittently? What should the duration of use be? Before taking a look at the individual treatments, let's answer these questions. Essentially, the therapies should be used one at a time, on a rotational basis, for the period of time in which significant improvement and herx reactions are experienced. This is the same approach as described for most of the other treatments I mention in my books and web sites. It is also the same approach that governs antibiotic use as discussed in Chapter 1 of The Top 10 Lyme Disease Treatments. Let's see how this works in a real-life example. Let's assume the first supplement you wish to use is Immunition (youll read about this supplement in a few pages). You should begin by slowly increasing your dose of Immunition up to the recommended dose, taking care to watch out for severe herx reactions. You can expect herx reactions with all of these therapies due to the fact that they combat the Lyme Disease infection in your body. For a detailed explanation of the herx reaction, see Lyme Disease and Rife Machines, Chapter 4. Herx reactions should be tolerable, and if they become too severe, dosages can be backed off. Once you have reached the target dose of Immunition, you will notice that it provides productive herx reactions and subsequent improvement for a period of time, typically ranging between 1-6 weeks. This is the sweet spot period of use. After herx reactions and improvement dwindle, the treatment should be discontinued. Then, you should take a break between immune-stimulating therapies. The break can also range in duration from 1-6 weeks (or longer if you are further along in your recovery process).

1. Deseret Biologicals Homeopathic Series Remedy

This is the treatment I am most excited to tell you about. Homeopathy is an interesting and somewhat counterintuitive method of healing. Homeopathic treatment is accomplished by giving a patient with symptoms of a specific disease extremely small doses of a substance that produces the same symptoms in healthy people. In other words, theoretically, someone experiencing an illness that involves nausea would benefit from taking a homeopathic remedy which would also cause nausea in a healthy person. The homeopathic school of thought dictates that symptoms of a disease are actually the body's way of fighting that disease. By intentionally increasing symptoms with remedies that cause analogous symptoms, it is believed that the body will actually mount a more effective immunological response to the offending problem. Homeopathy causes the body to perceive the problem as being larger then it is, and this causes an amplified response. Homeopathy is especially interesting in the treatment of Lyme Disease due to the fact that the presence of Lyme Disease bacteriaand associated neurotoxinsis immunosuppressive.

BioMed Publishing Group

Since homeopathy stimulates the body's response to the disease, it is basically able to "jump start" the immune system to engage in the fight against the infection. In other words, if there were ever a good disease on which to use homeopathy, Lyme Disease would be it. But the benefits of homeopathy go even further. Most typical immune-stimulating supplements are simply intended to blindly increase the activity of multiple generic immune system functions. For example, some supplements cause an increase in white blood cells, other supplements cause an increase in phagocytosis (the rate at which the immune system destroys bacteria), while other supplements increase the count of natural killer cells. Homeopathy, on the other hand, gets right to the root of the issue not by generically boosting the whole immune system, but instead, by specifically targeting immune functions that relate exactly to the disease at hand. The way this works in a practical situation is as follows. Let's say someone with Lyme Disease takes a homeopathic remedy intended for the treatment of Lyme Disease. This remedy will cause the immune system to believe that there are many more Lyme Disease bacteria in the body than there actually are. The homeopathic remedy will essentially "magnify" the bacterial infection. While the bacterial infection does not actually grow larger, the body will perceive it as larger, and, as a result, the body will increase immunological activities that directly fight the Lyme Disease infection. The most important component of these immunological activities is the production of antibodies, which are special immune system cells produced with the purpose of hunting down and killing one specific type of pathogen. In this case, a Lyme Disease homeopathic remedy will induce the body to produce Lyme-specific antibodies. This is a much greater benefit than achieved by other immune-stimulating supplements because the benefit is targeted and specific. Homeopathy is to most other immune supplements as a sniper rifle is to a shotgun approach. You may, at this point, be convinced that you want to try a homeopathic Lyme Disease remedy. The next challenge, though, is to select an appropriate remedy. There are actually dozens of Lyme-specific homeopathic remedies on the market. I have first-hand information that suggests that many of these remedies are quite useless. Selecting an effective and appropriate

9 pagesDocument 102page 3
homeopathic remedy is actually quite a tall task. Over the past two years, during my research of homeopathic remedies, I have consistently heard very positive things about Deseret Biologicals' homeopathic Lyme Disease remedy. In fact, many people have told me that they are currently in remission as a result of the Deseret remedy. Before I published this article, I wanted to be sure of these results. So, I held off in publishing this for about 8 months, during which time I continued to seek patient testimonials. Sure enough, the testimonials kept rolling in, so I decided to make this information available to you. There are definitely other Lyme Disease homeopathic remedies which are worth investigating and sampling. At this point, though, I'm confident in recommending the Deseret remedy as the most reliable and proven option. Additionally, the remedy is affordable and nontoxic. Deseret Biologicals, the manufacturer of this homeopathic remedy, does require that the treatment is supervised by a licensed health care practitioner. You can get a referral to a practitioner in your region by visiting the Deseret Website (http://www.desbio.com) or calling the company (800.827.9529). Do not be alarmed by the requirement of physician supervision most homeopathic remedies are sold over-the-counter, and, similarly, Deseret remedies are not dangerous and do not cause adverse reactions (other than herx reactions). Homeopathy is one of the safest medical therapies known to man. In fact, according to mainstream medical literature, homeopathy is one of the only treatments available that does not interact or conflict with prescription pharmaceutical drugs. An additional benefit of working with a health care practitioner who prescribes Deseret remedies is the fact that Deseret also produces remedies for several of the co-infections commonly associated with Lyme Disease. In addition to the Borrelia Burgdorferi remedy, Deseret produces remedies for: Valley Fever Bartonella Brucellosis Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever Candida Chlamydia

BioMed Publishing Group

HPV Coxackie Cytomegalovirus Epstein Barr Giardia Hepatitis Herpes Tuberculosis Mycobacteria Nanobacteria Parvovirus Toxoplasmosis This list was taken directly from Deseret company literature. Deseret also produces remedies for various viruses, urinary/respiratory tract infections, arthritis, and general bacteria. The practitioner you work with will be able to prescribe to you all of these remedies. Most of these remedies (including the Lyme Disease remedy weve talked about) are formulated as series remedies, which simply means that they are administered in a series of separate doses, each increasing in strength. Doses are typically given one week apart, or longer if herx reactions necessitate additional recovery time. Expect to have significant herx reactions during use of homeopathic remedies. These remedies are powerful and elicit true, authentic physiological responses inside the body. Educate yourself on how to properly deal with herx reactions. Further information on the topic of herx reactions can be found in my two books and elsewhere in Lyme Disease literature. Homeopathy is one of the most powerful, nontoxic, and high-value treatments in the world. Do not overlook homeopathy as an important part of your treatment program. While the other treatments we look at in this article merely help stimulate general healing processes in the body, homeopathy goes further and actually induces the body to respond specifically to the threat at hand. Most immune supporting supplements attempt to activate the immune system externally, while homeopathy intrinsically stimulates the immune system to engage. There are several new Lyme Disease homeopathic remedies on the market, and I will endeavor to research them and produce articles on them as soon as possible.

2. Beta Glucan
Beta glucan, a kind of polysaccharide (see the 2008 Lyme Disease Annual Report at http://www.lymebook.com/lyme-annual-report for more information on polysaccharides) is a widely studied, broadly recognized type of immune system modulator and strengthener. It is not a fringe supplement with only a small amount of research. Instead, it is recognized by the scientific community, and there have been over 1,000 studies conducted on its immunological effects over 60 years. There are numerous natural sources of beta glucan, the most potent of which is an extract from the cell wall of a type of bakers yeast known as Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Many types of mushrooms also contain beta glucan, and, as you will read further down in this article, the many benefits of mushroom supplements are in part due to their beta glucan content. When properly extracted, harmful parts of the yeast (such as that to which many people are allergic) are left behind, and only the beta glucan is extracted. So what exactly does beta glucan do? It has numerous effects: 1. Beta glucan is an antioxidant. 2. Beta glucan is an immunomodulator, meaning that, in addition to upregulating (stimulating) the immune system, it also downregulates functions of the

BioMed Publishing Group

immune system which may be hyperactive. With Lyme Disease, this is very important because Lyme Disease often involves excessive and non-productive inflammation. Beta glucan supplements can calm this excessive immune activity. 3. Beta glucan activates immune system cells known as macrophages, which are large white cells that play a critical role in healthy immune function. According to Trevor Marshall, Ph.D., inventor of the Marshall Protocol, cell wall deficient Lyme Disease bacteria can actually invade macrophages and colonize them. Not only does Lyme Disease bacteria shut down macrophages, it goes one step further and invades the cell to use as a safe harbor. Talk about a survivalcapable bacteria! Beta glucans ability to strengthen and activate macrophages can play a very important role in Lyme Disease treatment. In addition to fighting Lyme Disease, macrophages are critical to combating many different types of illnesses, including cancer. According to Dr. Kenneth Hunter from the University of Nevada school of medicine, "macrophages are one of the most important cells in the immune system to kill cancer tumors." 4. Experiments have shown that beta glucan also fights candida and has direct antifungal effects. To read about the many benefits of beta glucan, simply point your web browser to http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez and search for beta glucan (make sure you use the quotation marks in your search). With regard to Lyme Disease, the reason to use beta glucan supplements is simply that they have proven, through the experiences of Lyme Disease sufferers, to accelerate healing and reduce symptoms. There are dozens of different brands of beta glucan supplements available. The one with which I am most familiar and in which I have the highest degree of confidence is Immunition, manufactured by Nutritional Scientific Corporation (or NSC). You may be able to locate other quality brands. The reason I have confidence in the NSC brand is that Dr. Elmer Cranton, a now-retired physician from Washington state, observed this supplement to have dramatic ef-

9 pagesDocument 102page 5
fect in dozens of sufferers of chronic disease over his medical career of more than four decades. I personally know Dr. Cranton (both as a former patient and friend) and he is an excellent doctor, and also very skeptical of most supplements. I recall in one of our e-mail discussions him telling me how much it pained him to recommend this supplement since he generally found most supplements to be less useful than popularly believed. He described to me numerous cases of chronically ill patients who received great benefit from NSC Immunition. Additionally, my communication with various patients and physicians have yielded similar conclusions about NCS Immunition. Personally, I noticed significant benefit from Immunition when I was very sick with Lyme Disease. Resources and Product Information The NSC website, http://www.nsc24.com, is very informative and I recommend browsing it for additional information and to purchase products. Immunition is expensive, but in my evaluation, it is worth it. The two NSC products most useful for Lyme Disease are NSC-24 and NSC-100. NSC-100 is just a more potent form of NSC-24. NSCs toll free phone line is 888541-3997. NSC offers a free snail-mail newsletter which I have found to be relatively informative. To sign up, visit http://tinyurl.com/27zh4h. You may be able to locate other brands of beta glucan which are of high quality. 3. Medicinal Mushrooms
Naturally grown mushrooms, which are a type of fungi, are legendary in their medicinal qualities. Ancient artifacts and documents indicate that various types of mushrooms have been used to heal disease for thousands of years. In the current day and age, where medical prac-

tice is driven by political agenda and profit incentive, medicinal mushrooms have been all but forgotten. Hence, this discussion does not provide information that is new or unique, but instead, will hopefully serve to simply bring medicinal mushrooms back to the forefront of consumer consciousness. Mushrooms are very powerful substances. We know this because consuming the wrong type of mushroom (such as the skull-cap mushroom) can kill you, and consuming other types of mushrooms commonly used by drug addicts can lead to a drug-induced high. In the same way, the nutritive power of mushrooms can also be harnessed for healing purposes. The mushrooms most widely known for their medicinal qualities include maitake, shiitake, and reishi mushrooms. However, numerous other types of mushrooms also have valuable medicinal qualities. Currently, mushrooms are widely studied throughout the world. The International Journal of Medicinal Mushrooms, chaired by researchers in the Ukraine and Israel, is published quarterly and contains patient case reports, literature reviews, letters to the editor, and other relevant information. You can visit their website at http://tinyurl.com/2r6c2g. The Journal of Wild Mushrooming is also a quarterly publication which addresses a wide scope of topics. Visit their website at http://www.mushroomthejournal.com. Numerous books have also been written about medicinal mushrooms, including: 1. MycoMedicinals: An Informational Treatise on Mushrooms, Third Edition, by Paul Stamets. 2. Sugars That Heal: The New Healing Science of Glyconutrients, by Emil I. Mondoa. 3. Medicinal Mushrooms: An Exploration of Tradition, Healing, & Cultures, by Christopher Hobbs. 4. Shiitake: The Healing Mushroom, by Kenneth Jones. So what exactly are the health benefits of medicinal mushrooms? Of all of the supplements I have written about, medicinal mushrooms may be the one with the broadest application. At

9 pagesDocument 102page 6
least several dozen medicinal mushrooms exist. Here is an abridged list of the benefits of medicinal mushrooms: 1. Antibacterial. 2. Anti-candida. 3. Anti-inflammatory. 4. Antioxidant. 5. Anti-tumor. 6. Antiviral. 7. Blood pressure reducing. 8. Blood sugar regulator. 9. Cardiovascular strengthener. 10. Cholesterol reducer. 11. Immune system strengthener and modulator. 12. Kidney tonic. 13. Lung/respiratory strengthener. 14. Nerve tonic. 15. Sexual potentiator. 16. Stress Reducer. Indeed, although political and monetary forces of the economy have largely squeezed out alternative approaches to medicine, medicinal mushrooms are slowly but surely gaining due recognition. In fact, the list of well-known health care practitioners and researchers who recommend medicinal mushrooms is growing rapidly. The benefits of medicinal mushrooms have been verified by reputable and recognized scientific establishments such as The Ontario Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation, Drew University of Medicine and Science, and Georgetown University. Additionally, reports on medicinal mushrooms have appeared in many mainstream journals such as The Chemical and Pharmaceutical Bulletin, The American Journal of Chinese Medicine, the International Journal of Immunotherapy, The Japanese Journal of Pharmacology, and The European Journal of Biochemistry. When recovering from Lyme Disease, the specific immune-related benefits of medicinal mushrooms can accelerate healing from the Lyme Disease infection and its coinfections, while the other, more general benefits of medicinal mushrooms can help rebuild and strengthen the body after the damage done by chronic disease. Medicinal mushrooms should

be considered one of the supportive components of a treatment plan. In addition to supplement products, medicinal mushrooms can easily be integrated into your diet. In fact, doing so can be quite pleasurable as some mushrooms have an exquisite taste and work well in all kinds of recipes, from casual meals to fine, gourmet food preparation. http://www.mushroomrecipes.com has a wide variety of quality mushroom recipes. 3. AHCC (Active Hexose Correlated Compound) by Source Naturals. According to Source Naturals, AHCC is a proprietary compound produced by cultivation and enzymatic modification of several species of mushroom mycelia, including shiitake, grown in rice bran extract. Considered a superfood supplement in Japan, AHCC has been researched extensively for its immune-enhancement properties. According to human and animal research, AHCC may significantly increase Natural Killer (NK) Cell activity. AHCC may also increase macrophage activity, enhance cytokine production, and support the healthy functioning of the liver as well as act as an antioxidant. Because this product is manufactured by Source Naturals, it is widely available through most health food stores and online supplement stores. Another supplement containing AHCC is ImmPower, made by The Harmony Company, available at http://theharmonyco.com. According to a Lyme Literate Medical Doctor (LLMD) in Minnesota, ImmPower has led to significant improvement in several Lyme Disease patients. 4. Ridoxolan Plus by Aloha Medicinals, Inc. According to their website, this product is formulated specifically for Lyme Disease. This product contains primarily Cordyceps, a type of mushroom, and also several other herbal and nutritional ingredients. You can purchase this product from http://www.alohamedicinals.com. The website is fairly useful with FAQs for most of their products. A note of caution: I was unable to verify the veracity of the claim that this supplement can target Lyme Disease specifically. 5. Coriolus-MRL by Mycology Research Laboratories. This is a supplement containing raw, bulk powder of Coriolus versicolor in the form of both mycelium (vegetative branching of the mushroom) and primordia (young fruit body of the mushroom). Mycology Research Laboratories, http://www.mycologyresearch.com, manufactures numerous mushroom supplements, but Coriolus-MRL is preferred for Lyme Disease because, ac-

cording to some sources, it may help support CD-57 cell function, which is known to be deficient in Lyme Disease sufferers. This can be purchased from http://www.delicatebalance.biz in the product section entitled Microbial Balancers. transfer factor in the absence of availability of LY-TF. Take some time to review the Researched Nutritionals website, as numerous user reports have indicated that, in addition to LymPlus, their other products are also very beneficial. An additional important update on Lymespecific colostrum is the disappearance of the Chisolm Biological Laboratory website. Chisolms Lyme-specific colostrum was discussed in Lyme Disease and Rife Machines. However, because that book only provided the website for this company, and not the phone number, you may have been unable to locate this product line and you may have assumed (like I did) that the product is no longer available. Thankfully, after talking with the owner of Chisolm Biological Laboratory, I learned that the company is still in business, but that their website is simply not operational anymore. Hence, if you are interested in obtaining Lyme-specific colostrum from Chisolm Biological Laboratory, you need to contact them by phone at (803) 663-9618. You can request that they mail you a catalog and relevant literature. If you would like to learn more about the colostrum offered by Chisolm Biological Laboratory and you desire to read an unbiased periodical article, I suggest obtaining the back issue of Alternative Medicine Magazine dated May, 2000 from http://www.alternative medicine.com, (800) 546-6707. Request issue # 35. This magazine issue describes colostrum, how it works, and gives specific reference to Chisolm Biological Laboratory and their line of products. The beneficial effects of colostrum for Lyme Disease have been known for decades. In 1986, former congressman Berk Bedell actually hired a special farmer to create colostrum which was specific to his own strain of Lyme Disease. The congressman provided blood samples to the farmer and the farmer introduced them into a cow. The cows body, in response to being inoculated with Lyme Disease bacteria in the blood sample, began to then manufacture immune substances (known as antibodies) against Lyme Disease. The cow was then impregnated. When the cow provided first milk after the birth of its calf, the first milk contained colostrum that held antibodies specific to the strain of Lyme Disease the congressman was infected with. The congressman was cured of his Lyme Disease after drinking the colostrum. To read a detailed, 24-page story of the congressman and his experience with colostrum, read Politics in Healing, written by Daniel Haley, available at

4. Update on Lyme-Specific Colostrum and Transfer Factor

You may recall the topic of Lyme-specific colostrum and transfer factor addressed in my first book, Lyme Disease and Rife Machines. At the end of this article you will find an excerpt from Lyme Disease and Rife Machines that defines these supplements and explains their benefit. This article will present a few important updates on these supplements, including the discontinuation of one product and the availability of a new product. First, I would like to address a transfer factor product known as LY-TF, sold by Immunity Today, LLC, http://www.immunitytoday.com/ lytf.html. You may remember that this product was mentioned in Lyme Disease and Rife Machines. Unfortunately, this supplement is no longer available, and, according to the manufacturer, may be unavailable for quite some time. Fortunately, though, a new Lyme-specific transfer factor product has become available: LymPlus, made by Researched Nutritionals (https://www.researchednutritionals.com/). This product provides a source of Lyme-specific

BioMed Publishing Group

http://www.lymebook.com/politics. Hopefully these important updates have given you the information necessary to find these products. Below is an excerpt from Lyme Disease and Rife Machines which defines Lymespecific colostrum and transfer factor, and explains their benefit. Excerpt: The definition of colostrum is milk secreted for a few days after parturition (birth) and characterized by high protein and antibody content. Colostrum is only produced by the mother during the first 6-36 hours (or possibly even less time) after a child is born. A person receives very important immune system programming from their mother during the first few days of breast feeding. This priceless first milk contains immune system programming codes that teach a young persons immune system to fight disease. It contains proteins and nutrients that are not found in any other food source and are thus never ingested except during breast feeding. Often, people are not breastfed immediately following birth because of various hospital procedures. People who were born sick and kept isolated from their mother for the first few days/weeks of life are especially likely to develop immune system problems later in life due to insufficient first milk consumption. Being fed with grocery store formula instead of actual mothers milk can also cause a person to miss this important first milk. But even people who did receive adequate breast feeding still benefit from supplemental colostrum. Having a chronic illness of any form is an indication that colostrums might help. Bovine (cow) colostrum is often used as a human supplement because it has been scientifically demonstrated that bovine colostrum is biologically transferable to humans. Many scientific studies have shown the benefits of bovine colostrum in humans. Dozens of companies sell bovine colostrum, some are of higher quality and more useful than others. Colostrum from other animals, including chickens and goats, is also sometimes utilized to manufacture supplements. Colostrum also contains transfer factors. The definition of a transfer factor is a substance that is produced and secreted by a lymphocyte functioning in cell-mediated immunity, and that upon incorporation into a

lymphocyte which has not been sensitized, confers on it the same immunological specificity as the sensitized cell. This means that transfer factors stimulate and modulate the immune system against infectious disease. Some companies have chosen to sell isolated transfer factors instead of whole colostrum. Transfer factors are often isolated from biological sources other than first milk. These supplements often contain specific transfer factors intended to target specific infectious organisms. Transfer factors can be contrasted with colostrum, which contains multiple antibodies for multiple infectious organisms. Colostrum also contains numerous immune system substances other than transfer factors, such as a full array of immunoglobulins, while transfer factor is often an isolated formula of just one ingredient. Some people choose to use both colostrum and a transfer factor supplement. The degree to which colostrum and/or transfer factor is beneficial depends largely on the supplement. Some people get tremendous benefit while others do not. Colostrum and transfer factor supplements actually induce your own immune system to begin fighting Lyme Disease more effectively. Because your immune system is the most important weapon against Lyme Disease, colostrum and transfer factor are very valuable tools. Notes: 1 .
