Chancellors Message
Banking sector is increasing in scale and complexity. There is need to recruit and train the additional staff as public sector banks will have to face the challenge of retirement of a large part of their workforce. Some estimates suggest that close to about 500,000 employees of public sector banks would retire over next five years. Apart from this, the Banking & Financial Services Industry as a whole is on the path of growth and is at the same time wrought with challenges. This sector needs more and more readily employable trained professionals to rise up to the occasion. It is in recognition of this need that we have set up Symbiosis School of Banking Management. The first batch will pass out in April 2012. I am confident that you will find the students adequately equipped with the knowledge and trained with the necessary skill sets. I welcome you to visit our campus and recruit our students. Dr. S. B. Mujumdar President & Founder Director, Symbiosis Chancellor, SIU

From the Directors Desk

I have immense pleasure and pride in introducing to you our bright, vibrant, young Banking Management graduates. Banking in India has come a long way traversing three distinct phases: the era of nationalization and priority sector lending, the era of financial sector reforms in the nineties and now the era where technology enabled, customer focused financial conglomerates operate in multiple segments of the financial sectors. The demands of an emerging economy like ours on the Banking and Financial Services sector are multi-dimensional. Banks will have to master the fine art of balancing growth and inclusive development even as they relentlessly innovate to bring a wider range of financial services to the doorstep of the next generation customer. Banks would hence require appropriately trained management professionals to meet the emerging challenges. The two year MBA programme in Banking Management is designed to provide specialized knowledge and training to address not just the growing requirement but also the increasing complexity of operations of the banking sector. More than 50% of the courses are focused on Banking and Finance and thus equips the students with relevant knowledge and managerial skills to work effectively in banks and other organisations of the BFS sector with minimum training intervention after recruitment. I cordially invite you to Placement 2011 and look forward to a long-term, mutually enriching relation with your esteemed organization. Dr. Bhama Venkataramani

Director Symbiosis School of Banking Management.

Class Composition: A healthy composition of fresh graduates and experienced students from varied academic and professional backgrounds lends diversity to the class and this in itself provides for a vibrant learning atmosphere. International Collaboration: Symbiosis School of Banking Management in collaboration with Bremen University and Berlin School of Economics in Germany has instituted a student exchange program wherein every year students from SSBM can opt to attend courses related to European economy (during the months of July and August) along with their summer projects. As part of the programme, subject matter experts and industry captains are invited to provide a multi-dimensional overview. Students of SSBM interact with foreign students and the industrial visits augment their perspective and knowledge. Sectoral MBA: The concept of Sectoral Education is not new to India, thanks to the educational reforms of our nation. Symbiosis has always been a pioneer in offering Sectoral MBA programmes to provide trained manpower to suit the specific requirements of the industry. The rationale for such initiatives has been to develop centres of excellence to impart domain skills and also to help students leverage the opportunities provided by rapid growth in business and employment in certain sectors. The Symbiosis School of Banking Management was established to train capable young men and women enabling them to join and contribute effectively in Banks and NBFCs. SSBM will thus endeavour to bridge the supply demand gap the banking industry is facing at present in its own small way. Skills: Along with a systematic delivery of a structured curriculum, ample stress is laid on development of professional skills such as time management, appreciation of work-ethics, communication & presentation skills, compliance with organizational rules and appreciation of the merits of working in a team. Projects: Consistent with its mission statement, SSBM lays thrust on research based learning. The projects as part of the curriculum provide an opportunity to integrate learning from the programme and apply it to a real management problem or an impending opportunity in a business sector. During the course of study students have to submit 1 minor and 1 major project apart from the Internship project. The minor project needs to be published in a leading magazine. The topics for the minor project are vetted with industry experts for its relevance and are live business issues. The project is executed under the guidance of an industry expert and a faculty member. The projects are also themed upon financial inclusion, researching public policy schemes like NREGA, financial literacy, and various other social challenges. Seminars: The seminar series provides a platform for interfacing with practitioners from banking and financial sectors. The aim is to provide exposure to a variety of perspectives. In addition to further enhancing classroom instruction, the seminars make students sensitive to the prevailing trends in different sectors. Being associated with SIU gives our students opportunity to interact with stalwarts from the realm of Economics, Politics and Applied Finance. As part of the 'Festival of Thinkers' series some eminent personalities like Sam Pitroda, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Arun Shourie, Dr. R A Mashelkar, visited our campus and interacted with students and enlightened them with their inspiring & thought-provoking words.

25

Summer Internship Process

The aim of summer internship is to widen the students perspective and to help them understand the real life implications of the theoretical frameworks related to financial sector. It gives the students an opportunity to appreciate the organizational situations. Placement Assistance Committee (PAC) aims through assisting the students seeking projects as part of their Summer Internship Recruitment Programme (SIRP), and help them seek learning profiles in various Banking and Financial Sector Industries (BFSI) as per the guidelines laid down by the institution vis a vis summer internships.

Our students were placed in BFSI including Public Sector Banks (SBI, BoB, BoI, IDBI etc.), Private Sector Banks (ICICI, Axis, HDFC etc.), Foreign Banks (HSBC, Deutsche, etc.) and other NonBanking Financial Companies (NBFCs) including Financial Consulting Firms, Investment Firms, Insurance Companies and others. Students are also given guidance on the process related to internships at Government of India Undertakings like RBI, NABARD, DEA, etc. The process generally is typically based on the written tests, student write ups, GDs, and personal interview as per the requirements of the Company interested to absorb students from the institution. Students are evaluated on the internship project by the company executives based on the parameters defined by the institution. Further the students are evaluated by the faculty from the institute and graded for the credits assigned for the summer internship project. 26

Final Recruitment Process

SSBM has on campus placement process conducted annually, which is supervised by the Faculty Placement Coordinator and coordinated by the student elected Placement Committee. The placement process begins with Pre- Placement Talks by companies, usually scheduled between the months of October, November and December followed by the Final Placement Process. Pre- Placement Talks: The Pre-placement talk is a platform for interaction between the company and the students. Organizations are formally invited to participate in the placement process. Recruiters visit the campus for delivering Pre-placement talks to the students. The representatives of the company share the profile of the company, key aspects of its business, work environment, and opportunities available to students. The talks thus act as an interactive session broadly covering a wide spectrum of aspects like company profile, core values, job descriptions, career growth plan, selection procedure and emoluments offered. The presentation is followed by a Q&A session where students interact with company officials to get a better understanding of the company and potential roles. The companies would submit the 'Recruitment Form' with details of job offerings during this phase. Interested students apply to the company through the Placement Assistance Committee. A detailed resume is submitted by the students as part of the application process for recruitment. Final Placement: The final placement process is conducted over an extended period of time beginning in the second week of November. This gives the companies ample time for customized selection processes that may be required, given the lateral hiring process. Final placement interview gives the company and the student an opportunity to discuss the role in detail and make the right choice. The final placement process thus marks the culmination of the annual placement process wherein candidates, irrespective of the nature of their prior work experience, participate. All essential arrangements including logistics and infrastructural support required for the selection process of various companies would be provided by the institute. The company can make an offer to the student after the final interview. The offer should include details of role, location, remuneration, and other relevant terms and conditions required by the candidate to make a decision. The acceptance of offer is governed by placement rules of the institute. At the end of the process the decision of the student is conveyed to the company by the Placement Assistance Committee. With this process, our intent is to make the placement process conducive to both the companies and the students. We will also consider any additional company specific requirements over and above the outlined recruitment process.
