K
innelon Dentist Dr.
Peter Brusco chose to
spend his weekend a
little differently on January 7-
8. Along with twelve
others in his field, and
his lovely assistant
Sandy, Dr. Brusco trav-
eled to Fort Dix and
the McGuire Air Force
Base to perform dental
check -ups and clear-
ances for soldiers. For
everything these men
and women have done
for our country, this
was the least I could do
to say thank you, said
Dr. Brusco.
The base set up
several trailers filled
with the latest in den-
tal technology where
the dentists would each see
hundreds and hundreds of
patients. Thousands of ser-
vicemen from the Army and
the Air Force (both enlisted
and in the reserves) would
have the opportunity for a
dental screening. A busy
weekend for the dentists,
but Dr. Brusco was eager
to offer his support to
the troops.
The weekend start-
ed off with some military
training for the dentists.
Believe it or not, there
are strict dental health
classifications that can
stall a soldiers deploy-
ment. Soldiers are rated
from 1 (the best) to 3
(the worst). We even
had to answer affirma-
tive for yes, and nega-
tive for no, explained
Dr. Brusco. It was very
cool. Once everyone
was clear on their mission and
the proper protocol, it was
time to begin.
Through the day, Dr.
Brusco saw about six hundred
soldiers. He and Sandy took
scans and X-Rays, blood pres-
sure readings, and performed
fillings and even extractions.
Those who were rated poorly
according to the militarys
classification system were
given the proper treatment
they needed under the friend-
ly gentle hand of Dr. Brusco.
But what was most fulfilling
were the opportunities to hear
the stories of several of the
soldiers. Many of these men
and women had such tremen-
dous stories. One soldier I had
the opportunity to get to
know had flown as a pilot in
six separate missions! Just
incredible, said a genuinely
impacted Dr. Brusco. He is
already eager to participate in
next months screenings.

tice in Kinnelon or about the

T
oday, it is universally
accepted, that a
secure retirement will
require a nest-egg of multiple
millions of dollars for those
who intend to one day be able
to live off the rate of return
their retirement portfolio can
generate. It is my firm belief
that people in their twenties
or early thirties today will
require no less than
$10,000,000 as a base portfo-
lio necessary to generate the
income necessary to live when
they reach normal retirement
age of receiving their full
Social Security check, under
current law, age 67. As I have
stated in this publication
before, I believe the target age
for a full Social Security check
to be misleading with the age
being postponed to at least 75
by the time the current twen-
ty and thirty-somethings
reach their sixth decade of
life. When I received my first
paycheck at the age of 14 after
securing my working papers,
my employer explained to me
why I couldnt keep all of the
minimum wage, ($2.35 per
hour) that was paid to me. He
explained it as a contract
between me and the US
Government that was
reflected in the words FICA
on my pay stub. In 51 years
he said, the United States of
America would provide me
a pension check at age 65,
based on my earnings and
contributions into the sys-
tem. I later found out that
there was no contract at all,
not even a promise, just a
deduction each paycheck
with the hope that I would
be able to receive my per-
sonally paid for pension check
in full at age 65. The Federal
Government had other ideas
and they are far from done in
creative postponement and
qualification to receive my
retirement benefit package.
Needless to say I was not
happy to work for a promised
pay rate, yet have so many
deductions as per law, that the
check I ultimately received
was less than 85% of what was
promised. I could not place
blame on the employer as the
difference was not being held
nor confiscated by him. It was
a new term I learned about for
the first time called the I.R.S.
But, let me not stray too
far from my point; in 1967,
the federal government set
out to measure the impact of
inflation each year and there-
fore needed a starting point.
This was the birth of the CPI,
the Consumer Price Index.
Today, a 1967 dollar is worth
84% less when compared to
1967 or just 16. This means
that a 25 year old in 1967 with
a goal to accumulate
$1,000,000 in 44 years would
now need $6,250,000 to have
the same purchasing power in
1967 dollars. In other words,
a million dollars would only
be worth $160,000! By the
same token, if inflation is no
worse or better over the next
44 years than the last 44 years,
$10,000,000 is needed in 44
years to have the same pur-
chasing power as $1,600,000
in 2011 dollars. Assuming a
5% withdrawal rate, a per-
son my daughters age today
of 23 will need to be a deca-
millionaire to have an annu-
al income in todays dollars
of $80,000. Would you feel
like a deca-millionaire with
and annual purchasing
power of $80,000 in annual
income? I think not!
Last week my father
passed away at age 76. I am
now age 50. We were only 26
years apart and unfortunately
my father was uninsurable for
decades due to many medical
reasons. Had this not been
the case, I could have guaran-
teed myself a million dollar

payday. You see, we all have
the choice to invest capital in
some known vehicle with an
unknown rate of return hold-
ing our breath for the ultimate
outcome, a retirement portfo-
lio. Or we could guarantee
our financial futures by buy-
ing a multi-million life insur-
ance policy on Dad, Mom or
a substitute insured, like one
of their brothers or sisters.
Its true that we do not know
when they will die, nor do we
want to know. We only know
that they indeed will die and if
a policy is in force, there will
be that 6 or 7 figure pay-off to
the beneficiary, in this case it
couldve been me. Depending
on the age and health of the
insured, the premium figures
can be easily determined and
compared to the investment
alternatives available. You
would be hard pressed to find
a properly designed life insur-
ance policy that could not
beat the same premium
invested into the S+P 500,
the Dow Jones Industrial
Average or a myriad of other
choices at the death of the
insured. In my case, I had the
annual dollars to make such a
life policy investment, but,
could not due to the health
issues of both of my parents
and neither had siblings.
However, for the rest of the
insurable public, the under-
writing process may merely be
an inconvenience.
If I had been fortunate
enough to have been able to
insure my Dad for $1,000,000
and be responsible enough to
pay the annual premiums for
the last 20 years, today I
would have another
$1,000,000 added to my net
worth. If he were still alive,
the cash value of the policy
would still be mine and use-
able before his demise. There
is no shame or embarrassment
in this technique to create
wealth or a retirement plan.
Everyone dies and the insur-
ance companies make a profit
selling life insurance to the
people who purchase it to
eventually receive a payout
from it. This folks is a guaran-
teed retirement plan; the only
thing the purchaser doesnt
know is when he or she will
collect it. 76 is too young an
age to die, that is without
question and 50 is too young
an age to collect on a fathers
life insurance policy. But, if we
were to increase both of our
ages to 86 and 60 or 96 and 70
respectively, both parties
would have ended up win-
ning, Dad with a longer life,
and me with a more secure
and robust retirement nest-
egg based upon the additional
years of retirement plan asset
accumulations and the ulti-
mate death benefit from the
policy.
Though I could not
insure my parents, I did insure
myself for millions for the
benefit of my wifes retirement
security as well as for
my childrens inheritance.
Interestingly enough, my poli-
cies are uniquely designed to
benefit me too, should I live a
long life, providing me with a
tax-free income during my
retirement years. This type of
plan is so simple to under-
stand and easy to implement,
everyone should do it. Write
and ask me for a plan specifi-
cally designed for your budget
and circumstances that will
provide a living benefit for
you, a retirement income for
your spouse and a legacy for
your kids. It would be my
pleasure to produce a proposal
for all who just ask for one,
free of charge.

O
ver the last couple of years, dining out has become an even bigger luxury than it
once was. Thanks to the struggling economy, many people have decided to cut
back on spending, and dining out has become casualty of such events.
While the economy is gradually rebounding, dining out is still largely reserved for
special occasions among those whose memory of the recession is still fresh. However,
dining out does remain a strong choice when hosting a special occasion such as a birthday
party or anniversary celebration. When choosing a restaurant to have such a gathering,
consider the following tips to ensure that rare restaurant night out goes off without a hitch.
NEW
whats
in dining?
Look for versatility in a menu. When
dining out, the emphasis is obviously on the
food. Couples might enjoy certain
restaurants they have previously patronized,
but that does not necessarily make the
restaurant ideal for a party. When shopping
for a restaurant, look for one that boasts a
versatile menu that can cater to a vast array
of palates. Especially for larger parties, the
versatility of the menu is very important.
Restaurants that boast a large entree
selection that includes meat, poultry,
seafood, and even vegetarian dishes ensures
each guest has options.
Examine the elbow room. Because dining
out has become such a luxury, comfort
should be another key consideration. Look
for a restaurant that provides ample elbow
room so everyone can relax and wont feel
crowded.
Be sure there are places to park. Chances
are, most guests will be driving to the party.
While it seems like an afterthought, the
restaurant should provide ample, and ideally
free, parking. Avoid restaurants that charge
for valet service or inquire if such service
can be included on the tab ahead of time.
Reserve well in advance. If its a truly
special occasion, be sure to begin the process
of finding a restaurant as early as possible
and make a reservation the moment a
decision is made. Reservations can always
be cancelled should things not work out.

F
rom the early 1990s to
the beginning of this
century, bigger is bet-
ter certainly was the mantra
of the home-building industry.
All across North America
buyers could browse among
home developments boasting
homes of 3,000 square feet or
larger and multiple bedrooms
and bathrooms. But according
to new data, home buyers are
seeking less space today but
more in green amenities.
Research by the
Canadian Home Builders
Association has found that
many people now desire
smaller homes with multipur-
pose rooms and energy saving
features. Theyre not ready to
trade in their two- and three-
car garages just yet, though.
Plus, a survey of International
Furnishings and Design
Association members fore-
casts that McMansions will
become a thing of the past and
more emphasis will be placed
on smaller, more eco-friendly
homes. Family rooms will
grow larger, as will kitchens.
Other rooms in the home will
disappear, including the living
room.
Many homeowners and
potential home buyers realize
that with girth comes a cost.
In todays fragile economy, the
ability to cash in on the dream
of homeownership may come
at the compromise of a small-
er, better-planned home.
According to Tim Bailey,
the manager of Avid Canada,
a research and consulting firm
for the building industry,
While many consumers are
willing to forgo space, they are
not equating this with having
to forfeit functionality. Design
creativity is requisite to adapt
to this changing preference.

Mommy and Me Fitness!
Mothers with infants and
young toddlers have always
been challenged to find a
way to get back in shape
while focusing on the
demands of new mother-
hood. This class lets mom
keep baby within arms reach
so there is no need to worry
about finding a sitter or mak-
ing the time away from baby
to workout. The StrollFit
program is developed with
the needs of both mom and
baby in mind. Each 60-
minute class consists of car-
diovascular, strength and
flexibility training for a total
body workout. The classes
also provide a great environ-
ment for moms to connect
with one another and devel-
op support systems for
achieving fitness goals. Not
to mention bonding with
your baby! Now offered at 2
locations Wayne and
Montclair. For more informa-
tion or to attend a free class-
Contact Tami Wolfe at 973-

wolfe@comcast. net.
Here are some things
that you will and will not find
in newer homes moving for-
ward.
The dining room is becom-
ing extinct, with larger, eat-
i n- ki t chen/ ent er t ai ni ng
spaces the norm. The kitchen
will be the main room of the
home and be renamed the
kitchen lounge.
Separate rooms are evolving
into spaces that serve many
different purposes.
Although the sizes of bath-
rooms may be scaled back, the
amenities will not. Spa-style
bathrooms with luxurious
products, high-tech features
and televisions will be on the
rise.
The master bedroom suite
may not shrink in size, but it
could be combined to form a
home office and exercise
space.
Expect to see more high-
tech offerings, such as voice-
or motion-activation devices
in the home. Lighting, enter-
tainment gear, heating/cool-
ing systems, and even blinds
could be hooked up to a mas-
ter control system.
Thanks to an increasing
number of people working
from home, the presence of a
dedicated home office is a
given in newer homes. Nearly
40 percent of industry fore-
casters say that they expect
one in every home.
Home storage solutions will
also be a vital component of
new homes. Builders will cre-
ate clever solutions for mixing
storage into more compact
spaces.
With aging Baby Boomers
comprising a larger segment of
home buyers, expect to see
more one-level homes, or at
least homes where there is a
master suite and the majority
of the living space on the first
level.
Part of what is driving
this trend is the cost of homes
in relation to space and the
increased interest in environ-
mental conservation. Smaller,
more efficient homes require
less in terms of heating and
cooling energy. They need less
furniture, and new materials
made from sustainable prod-
ucts help further fuel green
initiatives in the building
industry. Energy efficient
homes are a main priority for
buyers. Although the homes
may be smaller, they will not
be miniscule. And home buy-
ers can expect a host of
amenities that will make the
smaller size of homes barely
perceptible.

J
effrey David Halpern,
Vice President-Branch
Manager of Coccia
Realty, Madison, recently
announced that Gaye Collins,
formerly of Weichert Realtors,
joined the firm as a Realtor.
We are very excited to
have Gaye join our team.
Personable and knowledge-
able describes Gaye. She has
been in the Real Estate busi-
ness, assisting clients and cus-
tomers to buy & sell properties
since 2004, boasts Halpern.
As a full-time Realtor,
Gaye understands the need to
hire the right real estate
agent, one who focuses on a
clients individual needs, the
neighborhood, the communi-
ty and the intangibles; which
makes a house and area, a
home.
What my clients discov-
er about me explains Collins,
I believe wholeheartedly in
the unique, personal nature of
real estate. My motto,
Customer Service Beyond
Customer Expectation, is
more than just words; it is
what I strive for.

cannot deliver she added, I

philosophy, of providing pro-
fessional and personal service,
mirrors mine. Coupling that
with the total support for their
agents, I can concentrate on
my clients needs, with all the
tools necessary to assist those
clients, without the corporate
constraints and rising out-of-
pocket costs from the big
box real estate companies.
Ms. Collins resides in
Whippany with her husband
and two children. She is
involved with numerous com-
munity organizations and is
the former Vice President of
the Salem Drive School PTA.
