Important Notes
Homework

This term the whole school will be focusing on the Olympics. In Year 5 we will create a timeline that shows the past 10 Olympics, as well as other significant years. The timeline will show the dates and venues and important figures and events that took place. We will also study the 2012 Olympic sites and design and create a brochure giving information on locations, timings and events. Art: The children will design and sculpt clay pots using the methods of slabbing and coil. When the pots are dry, the children will paint designs on them relating to an Olympic sport.
RE

Homework will continue to be set on Thursday and will be due back on Tuesday, unless the children are otherwise informed. Please check your childs homework and sign their homework diary when it is completed. Spellings will be given out on a Monday and the children will be tested on a Friday. Reading Books The children will continue to be given a new book from the school reading scheme on a Friday. It is very important that children bring their books and book bags to school on a daily basis. Could I also encourage you to listen to your child read and question them about the text at home?

During this unit we will be learning about the Muslim faith. We will find out what Muslims believe and the impact it has on their lives. We will look at similarities and differences between the Muslim and the Christian faith.
ICT:

The children will publish their brochures using images from websites and importing maps. We will also create interactive brochures on fronter using hyperlinks, embedding videos and sound clips.

Numeracy
In numeracy, we continue to encourage all of the children to learn all of their times tables. We will continue to develop skills in the following areas.

Literacy:
Our first unit is Poetic Style. We will be focusing on the following skills:

Written methods: addition and subtraction of decimals Ordering, partitioning and rounding numbers and decimals to 2 places Solving one- and two-step word problems involving numbers, money or measures Mental methods and recall: sums, differences, doubles and halves of decimals Factors, common multiples Patterns, relationships and properties of numbers and shapes Representing a problem using calculations or diagrams Visualising 3-D and 2-D shapes Properties of 3-D and 2-D shapes Nets of solids Using a calculator

As a class and in groups, children hear, read and study in depth a range of poems from two significant writers, Pie Corbett and Valerie Bloom. They will explore some of the many elements and features of these poems which together constitute the writer's distinctive style, including language effects, pattern and form, subjects, themes and meaning. The children will be encouraged to respond to and perform the poems in a variety of ways. The children will write their own free verse poems, inspired by those they have read, and borrowing, melding and adapting elements and features from these in order to begin to develop a style of their own.
