Legend of Tea
China According to a Chinese legend, tea was discovered accidentally by emperor Shen-Nung approximately 3,000 years before Christ as follows: The emperor set up camp with his entourage in the shade of a large tree. A fire was made and a pot with boiling water was prepared. The heat of the fire brought some of the leaves of the long branches of the tree to dry out. Suddenly, a fierce wind got up and blew some of the leaves into the pot with boiling water. The water turned golden and a delicious scent appeared. The emperor tried the drink and was delighted by the scent and delicious taste. Being immediately aware of the refreshing and invigorating effect, the emperor let out the sound "T'sa", meaning godlike so that, until today, "cha" is the name for tea in Chinese. Japan The Japanese also have their own legend with respect to the discovery of tea. The penitent made the pledge of 7 years of meditation. He vowed not to sleep in these 7 years. Despite this vow, he fell asleep on night. When he woke up the next morning, he was so angered by his failure that he cut off his eyelids and threw them to the ground. As soon as the eyelids touched the soil, they grew roots which soon developed into a large bush. When the penitent saw this wonder, he prepared himself a drink out of the leaves. People from all areas came to see this wonder tree and many followed the penitent and prepared a drink from the leaves. The knowledge of the drink's refreshing and invigorating effect was spread everywhere. The delicious taste and scent were reason enough to see this drink as "divine". Until today the Japanese language uses the same character for eyelid and tea.

India The Indian legend goes as follows. In the year 500 after Christ, the Fakir Dharma took the vow not to sleep for 7 years. After 5 years of mental immersion it appeared that he could no longer fight the need to sleep. Full of desperation due to knowing he would not be able to keep his vow, he grasped a couple of branches of the tree where he had made his camp. He put a few leaves into his mouth and chewed them. Immediately, Dharma experienced a refreshing and invigorating effect, his tiredness evaporated and he could keep his vow.

Black tea Kenia GFOP Kaproret

3-5 minutes 100 C 4-5 heaped tsp./1 litre

Price: 6.25 Order #: 22833

Orthodox qualities from Africa are today absolute rarities. The export business today is predominated by CTC teas, and only the highland plantations Kaproret, Saramek and Chemase in the district of Kericho are still cultivating crossings of Chinese bushes. The demand largely exceeds the small yields, but thanks to longstanding business relationships we have always been able to secure the best qualities from the second main plucking phase. Due to their striking, golden brown leaf tips, their shining orange-colored cup and the strong, slightly flowery flavor those are often mistaken for Chinese Yunnan teas.

With a market share of about 1.5 %, Kenya is considered on a quantity basis to be a minor producer on the world market. However, once you consider the quality and the extraordinary coffee character, Kenya belongs to one of the best producers at any time. Kenyan coffee beans feature a very fi rm structure and require more heat than other coffees during the roasting process. This is due to the fact that the coffee plants in Kenya are cultivated at high altitudes of up to 2,100 m where coffee grows very slowly. Normal, even beans are selected and traded in different grades of goods. Most exports receive an AB classifi cation, while top qualities receive an AA title. Due to their rarity, Kenyan pearl beans are an absolute speciality. If the coffee tree cannot deliver suffi cient nutrients to the coffee cherries that grow at the very end of the bush, the bush develops only one bean in the cherry, a so-called pearl bean. This individual bean collects so much strength and grows so slowly that it becomes more aromatic than a fl at bean. Our pearl beans are from the Kiundi region and are hand picked. Character and Taste The experienced roast master needs to use all his capability and skills in the roasting process since pearl beans are of rare beauty. If he is successful in roasting, the typical chocolate-like character and mild, spicy fullness of Kenyan coffee will develo

In 1833, Earl Grey, the Earl of Howick Hall, at that time British Prime Minister, suspended the price monopoly which the East India Company had over the tea trade with China. The originally pure Chinese tea was lightly flavored with the fine oil from the bergamot fruit. This additional fragrance, which was provided by the Chinese, was intended to protect the tea from the taste of mould and tar which could arise from the long voyage at sea to royal England. Thus this tea received its name, and still today Earl Grey is the embodiment of the finest English tea. A must for every good tea assortment! Ingredients: black tea, natural flavoring type bergamot.

Green tea Japan Sencha Fukujyu

13 minutes 75 - 80 C 4-5 heaped tsp./1 litre

Price: 8.90 Order #: 22470

Selected Assam leaf teas with a striking pine needle-shaped leaf and many goldenbrown tips form the basis for this classical East Frisian type. Of a medium-strong character, this blend develops a temptingly delicious and sweetish note when brewed. We recommend adding some rock sugar and milk or cream, which even intensifies the full taste. Really a treat, not only on Sundays

This tea is from Shizuoka in the Fujiyama mountain slopes, where half of the Japanese tea is produced. This Sencha is harvested mechanically in autumn. Stalks and broken pieces are removed by hand. Sencha means "steamed tea". This tea is carefully processed and slightly steamed before rolling and drying. The leaf gets a very fine and fragile structure. The infusion has a shimmering light olive green color. The taste is distinct with a dominant note in the aftertaste and ideal for those who like strong green teas. Besides the taste characteristics this tea is also most cost effective.

Green tea blend Sencha - Ginger

2-3 minutes 75 - 80 C 4-5 level tsp./1 litre

Price: 3.90 Order #: 22268

Oolong is a specialty which had originally been produced in the Taiwanese mountains. After plucking, the teas are fermented to approximately 50 % and then wilted in the sun. Frequent turning of the tea in bamboo baskets during the drying process allows the Oolong to develop a mild aroma and a large, wildly curled leaf. After brewing, the still green leaf center with the fermented leaf edges becomes clearly visible. This tea fascinates with a particularly irregular and quite short, slightly broken leaf of black-brown color. It is very light in the cup and has a very flowery and spicy taste.

Green tea from China and Ceylon, a new combination! Also due to the great demand which has reached us from around the world, we have included this unusual but convincing creation in our range. The dominant spiciness and the defying subtleness which the light Bancha contributes, almost make this blend an everyday tea. Beside the intense, slightly sharp aroma, also the ginger roots play their part in this blend. Pure, straight, distinct - that is what ginger tea tastes like. Ingredients: green tea, ginger pieces, black pepper, flavoring

Thanks to the low caffeine content and the fine mildness, this tea can be consumed all day long. Also here, green tea beginners can make their first positive experience. The Japanese prefer this tea for the afternoon hours. Ingredients: green tea, peeled rice

2-3 minutes 75 - 80 C 4-5 level tsp./1 litre

Price: 4.35 Order #: 22698

We can offer a high-category tea which is very popular in Japan. For this so-called twig tea particularly the fine leaf ribs are used and mixed with a Sencha. The fine, lightgreen leaf stalks, together with the dark green Sencha, have a beautiful appearance. This classic is very popular also due to its low caffeine content. As far as taste is concerned, with its fine-tangy, very pleasant spicy note it resembles a typical Japanese Sencha of higher category. The cup looks lemon yellow. The light green infusion has a full-spicy bouquet.

Dreams of long white sandy beaches, skies without a cloud and endless warm summer nights in the South Sea - those are the thoughts that come to mind if you think of the famous cocktail. Why go far? Our select green tea basis with the exquisite flavor satisfies the highest expectations. The select Pina Colada flavor combination together with a colorful decoration of pineapple cubes and coconut shreds make this creation a real bestseller. Drinking Mate out of one cup was something ritual with the native Indians. Later Brasilian Mate became the most popular drink of the Gauchos, the South American cowboys. Mostly enjoyed outside at the campfire, it became the national drink in almost every country on the continent over the years. Its stimulating effect lasts longer than that of coffee. A short infusion time brings about a stimulating effect, longer weakens it.

The chamomile is commonly known as that kind of tea which you drink, when you are suffering a cold, lying in your warm bed, with a scarf around your neck. However, this dried blossom makes a very appropriate drink, being mild and caffeine free in every season. People also like using it to pamper their skin in the vapor of a hot chamomile bath. We are offering a chamomile of very high-grade quality. The infusion sets its typical chamomile character intensely free. The product is very even, small pieces have been sorted out by handpicking. The larger and optically more conspicuous sister of the chamomile, the Roman chamomile, has a similar taste but is prefered for decoration purposes. Chamomile has been used by humans since the Neolithic Age. O r g a O t h e G r T e a n i c r e e n T e a Page 24

This tea is one of the prettiest treasures from the world of tea. It grows in the mountains of southeast China. For more than 100 years, only the finest and youngest leaves of the best green tea qualities have formed the basis for this rarity The still not quite dry leaves are mixed up to six times with fresh, delicately smelling jasmine blossoms, then sieved and rolled by hand to small pearls. The leaf encloses the fine jasmine aroma and only sets it free during brewing. The fact that two leaves and a bud were taken shows in the infusion. The cup colour has an elegant champagne colour.

Pu-Erh or Pu-er teas are teas whose leaves after fermentation are re-hydrated, to enable a further fermentation; they are called post-fermented teas. There are different methods, each following centuries-old traditions. After production, these teas are stored in cool cellars or dug in the ground for one to several years. Our quality is the most popular and best-sold worldwide. The dark to light brown Sinensis leaf develops a strong, spicy and earthy taste and - depending on the drawing time - an earthy and woody flavor. The infusion has a dark red colour.

A true queen among the fruit tea blends. Noble, simple and elegant! On warm summer days we recommend to prepare an intense, strong brew, let it cool and then serve it as iced tea with sparkling wine or mineral water, thoughtfully decorated with a mint leaf. For this intense and exotic pleasure we have left out the apple pieces and focussed on papaya cubes. Strength and power are contributed by fruity, sour hibiscus blossoms and different air-dried and freeze-dried berries. Ingredients: papaya cubes, hibiscus blossoms, currants, black currant, blueberries, elderberries, flavoring, freezedried strawberry and raspberry pieces.

This Gunpowder, also known as "Zucha" or "pearl tea" is much finer than its predecessor. As the classical one, this tea is dried slowly in rotating drums. Due to the permanent rotation the tea is given its ball-like form. The "Temple of Heaven" is a very tightly rolled ball through which one can see the high-grade quality. The aroma is somewhat softer than the standard quality. This tea can be drunk during the whole day. Should you nevertheless find this tea too bitter, you may pour away the first brew also this time and, by doing this, you will also have removed the major part of the caffeine
