Part F: Personal Statement

You may continue on a separate sheet if you need to. Key Competencies, Knowledge and Skills: Referring to the person specification, provide examples of how you have demonstrated the key competencies and the knowledge and skill requirements for this role. You may use experience gained from within and/or outside the workplace to provide these examples. (We recommend that you use the different headings on the person specification as a starting point.) I would like to apply for the post of teaching assistant as I feel I have many of the attributes required of this post. I am currently a mature student at university centre in Yeovil in my final year of a English and History degree and plan to study for my Primary PGCE in September 2012. I went to university later than most as I did not have a fortunate upbringing and was not inspired or encouraged to succeed academically. Therefore I tried to make my way up the ladder by hard work and determination and my A Levels behind me and it became apparent having been made redundant that without a professional qualification or vocation success and career satisfaction is difficult to achieve. Despite a turbulent upbringing school was the only time I felt confident I could succeed until I was married. I realise the importance of inspirational teachers and a supportive background to nurture and develop as a child and realise your full potential. I feel that a childs potential is not just dictated from their academic abilities at secondary school but from their foundation years also. Although my non-academic life has been centred around the elderly I feel the majority of the skills I have learned in care homes can be easily transferred to a teaching assistant role, for example compassion, understanding, tolerance, commitment and team working. At university I consider myself to be an active member of the class and have been told by tutors that my delivery of seminars are well thought out, thought provoking and inspiring. Additionally I have delivered group presentations involving planning and delegation of work between the team, negotiation skills, resource management and being able to work to short deadlines. I am due to start volunteering with the Scouts in North Dorset in early November (awaiting CRB clearance) as I am keen to support and inspire young people. I have also undertaken a weeks lesson observations in a secondary school a giving me good insight into the challenges of working with children and the need for good preparation and a supportive team around you. I hope you can see from my personal statement of my desire and commitment to the teaching assistant role and see how I see this position as a valuable experience and excellent foundation to my future primary school teaching career. I am willing to undertake any guidance or training that would be required of this role. Personal Attributes: Please describe ways in which you have demonstrated the personal attributes required for this post, as outlined in the person specification.

I am a mature student at University having been made redundant and have seen how challenging it can be to make your way in a career without a degree qualification. It has always been an ambition of mine to become a teacher, however it was not until I was made redundant that I realized it was the last chance I had to realize this due to a young family. Because of this life experience and a challenging childhood I know how important a good education to be and succeed at school. I consider myself keen to learn and quick to pick up new skills, caring and passionate about the role and feel I personally would be a valuable addition to your school as my commitment to becoming a teacher myself cannot be questioned and I would give my all to this role.
