ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES

EDPS These are programmes structured to motivate, train develop people to become successful entrepreneurs.

EDPS
In India over 686 all India and state level financial institutions have conducted EDPs successfully. Programmes similar to Indias EDPs are conducted in other countries also eg Junior Achievement Programmebased on the principle of catch them young in USA and Young Entreprises in the UK.

OBJECTIVES OF EDPS
The Important Objectives of the EDP are: Develop and strengthen their entrepreneurial quality ie motivation or need for achievement. Analyze environmental set up relating to small industry and small business. Select product. Formulate project for the product.

Know the pros and cons in becoming an entrepreneur. Appreciate the needed entrepreneurial discipline. Let the entrepreneur himself/herself set or reset objectives for his/her business and strive for their realization. Prepare him/her to accept the uncertainty involved in running a

COURSE CONTENTS OF EDPs


The course contents of EDPs are selected in line with the objectives of the EDP. The training programme is usually six weeks duration. It consists of the following phases: General Introduction to EntrepreneurshipFirst of all the participants are exposed to a general knowledge of entrepreneurship such as factors affecting small scale industries,

Motivation TrainingThe training inputs under this aim at inducing and increasing the need for achievement among participants. This is in fact a crucial input of entrepreneurial training. Management skillsRunning a business large or small requires apt managerial skills. Since a small business cannot employ management experts to manage his or her business he/she needs to be imparted basic and essential managerial skills in the functional areas like finance production and marketing. This enables them to run their business smoothly and successfully.

Support system and procedureThe participants also need to be exposed to the support system available from different institutions and agencies for setting up and running small scale enterprises. This is followed by acquainting them with the procedures for approaching, applying and obtaining support from them.

Fundamentals of project feasibility studyUnder this input the participants are provided guidelines on the effective analysis of feasibility or viability of the particular project in view of marketing, organization, technical, financial and social aspects. Knowledge is also given on how to prepare projects for certain products.

Plant VisitsIn order to familiarize the participants with real life situations in small business, plant visits are arranged. Such trips help the participants know about an entrepreneurs behavior, personality thoughts and aspirations. These influence him to behave accordingly to run his enterprise smoothly and successfully.

EDP Programme consists of three phases Pre Training PhaseThe activities and preparations required to launch the training programme come under this phase. This phase includes the following:

Training phaseThe main objective of this phase is to bring desirable change in the behavior of the trainees. In other words the purpose of training is to develop need for achievement ie motivation among the trainees. The main objective of EDPs is held to be enterprise creator. Hence it is necessary to see whether the objective of EDPs is fulfilled or not. It is essential to know how many participants have actually started their own enterprises after the training. Hence it is importance to assess the effectiveness of the EDPs and it is done by teams of researchers and

PROBLEMS FACED BY EDPS


The main problems encountered by EDPs are: Trainer motivations are not found up to the mark in motivating the trainees to start their own enterprises. ED organizations lack in commitment and sincerity in conducting the EDP programme, in some cases the EDPs are used as means to generate surplus income for the ED organizations.
