Course Description: This course is an introduction to the managerial process and the functioning of business. It integrates findings of the behavioral sciences with classical, quantitative systems, and other approaches to business. New this term students will find a complete listing of all textbook homework assignments in the syllabus addendum. It has been said that if you give a man a fish you can feed him for a day teach a man to fish and you will feed him for a lifetime. The authors of this courses textbook would take it one step further in suggesting: Teach a person to start a fish farm and you will feed a community for a lifetime. (Nickels, McHugh & McHugh) This course allows the learner to appreciate the world of business as it touches all facets of our daily lives, in many ways, in many places, on a global scale. The concepts of management, business administration, and the creation of entrepreneurship are the vehicles by which learners will gain an understanding of how the world of business works, and how it impacts our communities here in the 21st century. Course Prerequisites: WRI 1100 or an equivalent Themes Application: Communication skills Students develop the ability in these courses to explain, understand and criticize information and opinion. Included are the mastery of written and verbal discourse, an appreciation of group dynamics, an understanding of the mass media, and the impact of the

latest electronic information technology in relation to business management in the US and on a global scale. Global Systems Students understanding of that which holds the global business community together is developed through the study of the interaction of politics, economic, management, science, and culture across national borders as well as across the confines of traditional fields of study. World Cultures Students understanding of cultural values and lifestyles of people throughout the world and its impact on global business issues and trends is fostered; both as a means of interpreting diverse approaches to life and for understanding the students own customs and choices. . Student Learning Outcomes and Assessment: Students will accomplish the learning outcomes through a process of problem solving, applied learning, and use of critical thinking. Assessment of learning outcomes will be accomplished through objective exams, written assignments, discussion forums, and a course research project. At the end of this course students will be able to: 1) Understand the basic concepts associated with the contemporary business environment including basic concepts relating to the U.S. economic system, the history of business in the U.S., and business in a global context. This will be evaluated through exams, written assignments, and weekly discussion forums. 2) Define the various forms of business and recognize the impact of entrepreneurship and small business on the U.S. economy. This will be evaluated through exams, written assignments and weekly discussion forums. 3) Understand the basic function of management, organizational structure, and the role of technology in production processes. This will be evaluated through

exams, written assignments, and weekly discussion forums 4) Demonstrate a beginning knowledge of motivational theories and principles, the functions of human resource management, and key labor/management issues. This will be evaluated through exams, and weekly discussion forums, and written assignments. 5) Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental techniques relating to the development of marketing strategies, specifically: product, price, place, and promotion. This will be evaluated through exams, written assignments and weekly discussion forums. 6) Gain an introductory understanding of how information systems, communication technology and accounting/financial analysis contribute as evaluation and control devices to the overall management process. This will be evaluated through exams, written assignments, weekly discussion forums, and a course research project. 7) Understand the basic concepts relating to money and banking, the role of financial institutions, the impact of sound securities and investment management, and the options associated with risk management. This will be evaluated through exams, and written assignments. 8) In addition to the coursework objectives stated, the students ability to effectively communicate and work in an online environment will be enhanced as demonstrated through ongoing weekly discussion forums, and weekly student assessments. 9) To demonstrate applied learning and use of critical thinking skills students will be evaluated by assessment of a course research project. Methods of Course Instruction: The class will be organized around online asynchronous discussion, weekly written assignments, exams, and a course research project which utilize problem-based learning theory, applied learning, and critical thinking. Students are

given problems and questions, they consult their textbook, research other written sources, other students, and the instructor to analyze and solve the problems. Then, as individuals and/or small groups, they will communicate their solutions and answers to questions in written form.

The course is built on a Learning Module format. Each week of the course will correspond to a learning module that will contain all the elements of course materials and assignments that students will need to complete for each week.

Now, here is some very important information on how I will be grading your participation in the class. Discussion Forums: Practicing Management Decisions Questions: Students are to answer assigned discussion questions either provided by the Faculty member or assigned from the textbook. These discussion questions will be posted in weekly discussion forums on your blackboard web site. Ten graded weeks of discussion forum activities this term are worth 500 total points.
Grading Criteria for Discussion Questions Class participation through discussion is an integral part of this online course, although it is typically less formal than other work submitted throughout the course. Participation is defined as active engagement in a discussion or other online activity. To provide a structure for balanced participation and allow you to maximize the benefit of the discussion boards, it is recommended that you follow these guidelines: 1) Post your responses to discussion questions in the first three days of the school week (Monday through Wednesday). 2) Post two or more thoughtful and topic-relevant comments to responses made by classmates during the last four days of the school week (Thursday through Sunday). 3) Respond to any questions that your instructor or peers have regarding your original post by the end of the school week. Weekly Written Assignments: Students will review specifically assigned exercises from the textbook and respond to the questions that are included with each exercise. These written assignments will be posted in the weekly Learning Module assignment drop boxes for grading. Weekly Written Critical Thinking Assignments are worth a maximum of 500 points. 10 Weeks at 50 points per week maximum. Weekly written assignments will be assessed in the following manner.

25 points maximum for CONTEXT. Context (Layout, spelling, cover page, table of contents, word processed properly, attached to email properly, submitted properly) 25 points maximum for CONTENT Content. Depth of the writing, answering the questions in a complete manner, adding personal opinion) Again, weekly assignments are due each SUNDAY NLT 9PM Hawaii Standard Time. Exams: All three exams for this course will be open-book. Exams are found in the assessments section of your class shell. Material for the exams is extracted from the course textbook. Each exam is worth a maximum of 100 points. Instructions will be given shortly through an announcement about the procedure for taking the exams through your web site. Course Project: Students will create a course project worth a maximum of 200 points that contains a term paper and summary PowerPoint presentation:

The Course Project description and drop box will be found in the Learning Module section. The project will consist of a fifteen page research paper on a company or organization of interest to the student and a five slide PowerPoint presentation that summarizes the research paper Assignment format and submission specifics for the project will include:

Research paper, fifteen pages in length, APA or MLA format. Use of at least ten references not to include the course textbook. PowerPoint slides of at least five, but not to exceed ten slides that summarize the content of the research paper.
The research paper and the presentation must be submitted for grading during the final week of the course. The presentation must be posted to the course project assignment drop box as an attachment. The research paper must be submitted to the assignment folder drop box also as an attachment.

Faculty and Student Expectations for the Course: Students are expected to participate on a regular basis (see attendance/participation policy); in addition, they are to let the faculty member know of any extenuating circumstances that arise that would affect their attendance and participation in the course. Also, students are expected to exhibit a collegial and congenial tone while interacting online with faculty and other class members. The faculty member is expected to provide feedback and grading of assignments in a timely manner. In general, Emails will be returned within a 24-hour period. Any exceptions will be noted to students. Faculty is also expected to be available online to answer questions related to course content and schedule. Finally, the faculty is expected to facilitate the course in a manner consistent with competent online educational standards of practice. Online Course Policies: Attendance and Discussion Participation: Students will be considered in attendance when they post to the weekly discussion forum, submit a homework written assignment or complete an online exam. Students who fail to meet this minimum requirement will be considered absent from class. Excessive absenteeism will negatively impact course grade

and/or enrollment in the course as described by Student Handbook policy. The faculty member has the discretion to determine the appropriateness and relevance of student responses and overall attendance/participation grade. The faculty member will use the attached rubric for grading purposes. Make up work may be allowed at the discretion of the faculty member. In general, no extra credit work is available for this course. Academic Honesty Policies: Online Programs In addition to the on-campus student conduct policy, students enrolled in online program are expected to demonstrate the same tolerance, respect, and understanding that would prevail in any campus situation. All online users are expected to support the same respect for individuals, commitment to issue and problem resolution, and open communication and feedback as in the face-to-face environment. Specifically, online students are expected to: Accept responsibility and accountability for all use actions and content posted to any online classroom, public meeting or personal inbox (email). Maintain the same ethical standards expected in a collaborative, academic environment. Demonstrate respect for all faculty, students, and staff regardless of age, race, gender, religion, national origin, veterans status, disability, or sexual orientation. In the online environment, the following will not be tolerated: Harmful, threatening, libelous, or abusive content Profanity of any kind

Copyright infringement or violation of patent, trademark, proprietary information, or confidentiality agreements Plagiarism (refer to the HPU ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICIES AND PROCEDURES included at the bottom of the page) Misrepresentation of identity through alteration of inbox (email) names Posting unsolicited advertisements to public meetings or private inboxes (no spamming) Transferring computer viruses, intentionally or unintentionally, or other code that disrupts or interferes with other users' use of the online environment or personal computers, systems, or networks. Users who are in violation of the terms listed above are subject to the following sanctions: Student may be placed on disciplinary probation. Student may be suspended from a class in which the student disrupted the learning environment. The student's user account, by which the student may access the virtual classroom, may be terminated The student may be terminated from the HPU Online Campus. Like all other rights and privileges in a free society, academic freedom is constrained by other freedoms and rights of individuals within the society. Academic freedom necessitates the recognition of significant contrary viewpoints and requires a degree of respect for the rights of others to hold such contrary viewpoints. Academic freedom requires differentiation between personal views and opinions and proven facts of broadly held conclusions within a discipline. It is neither possible nor desirable to attempt to enumerate the limits of academic freedom. In general, academic freedom is abused when important individual rights of others within the community are denied under the guise of academic freedom. All members of the University will be expected to exercise their rights to academic freedom responsibility. (HPU Policies and Procedures) General Statement: The policy of Hawaii Pacific University is clear regarding academic dishonesty. Any student, who cheats on an academic exercise, lends assistance to others, or who hands in, as a completed assignment, work that is not his or her own will be penalized. The ultimate penalty is expulsion from the University. The term academic exercise includes all forms of work submitted for points, grades, or credit. Academic Dishonesty: The definition of academic dishonesty includes: Cheating The intentional use of or attempted use of unauthorized assistance, materials, information, and/or study aids in any academic exercise. The act of collaborating and working together on any academic exercise (without the approval of the

instructor) which is similar in appearance, content, and form so as to create doubt as to whether the work was truly the product of individualized effort. Examples of cheating include but are not limited to: giving or receiving unauthorized assistance during examinations; submitting assignments that appear to be similar in appearance, content, and form to an assignment submitted by another person. Plagiarism The deliberate use or reproduction of ideas, words, or statements of another as ones own without proper acknowledgement or citation. Examples of plagiarism include but are not limited to: using verbatim or paraphrased text without proper citation; submitting, without permission, the same written or oral material in more than one course; obtaining research or lab data from another individual or source but presenting it as ones own; paraphrasing so as to mislead the reader regarding the source. Facilitating Academic Dishonesty Intentionally or knowingly helping or attempting to help another to commit an act or acts of academic dishonesty as defined in this policy. Fabrication The intentional and unauthorized falsifying or inventing of any information or citation in an academic exercise or University document. Examples of fabrication include but are not limited to: falsifying data or signatures on an official University document (e.g., registration form, college record, or transcript); misrepresenting a fact in order to obtain a course exemption, waiver, or withdrawal. Procedures for Dishonesty Cases Suspected cases of academic dishonesty will be dealt with by the instructor or instructors concerned with one or more of the penalties listed.

In each such instance, the instructor shall send a report of the incident (Academic Dishonesty Report Form) and the penalty imposed to the Vice President for Academic Administration through the appropriate college/school Dean. Penalties: Instructors may elect to assess one of the following penalties: Require the student to redo the academic exercise or do a new academic exercise. Give the student an F for the academic exercise and permit it to be redone. Give the student an F for the course. Remand the case to the appropriate dean for disposition. That dean may impose one of the foregoing penalties or remand the case to the Vice President for Academic Administration. If the case is remanded to the Vice President for Academic Administration for disposition, that official may impose one of the foregoing penalties or remand the case to the Academic Affairs Conduct Review Board. The Academic Affairs Conduct Review Board can recommend any of the appropriate academic sanctions listed on pages 4849 of the HPU Student Handbook. The Vice President for Academic Administration must approve the boards recommendations for them to be actuated.

Rights and Privileges Instructors may request that the Vice President for Academic Administration dispose of the case or refer it to the Academic Affairs Conduct Review Board. The Vice President for Academic Administration may take the case for his or her own disposition, or refer it to the Academic Affairs Conduct Review Board.
