Memo to the South Asian Community Organizations:
Let’s Start Uniting Rather Than Dividing
I
t has been over 61 years since the Indian
Sub-continent was split up and we still
don’t realize the importance of putting
aside petty issues and differences to unite
for a better future. Why are we so easily
brain washed by the utter nonsense that
the self profiting politicians have sold us
for the last half a century? Our minds seem
to be hibernating and remain completely
oblivious to the fact that our identities and
our everyday life is being jeopardized by
our ignorance towards reality.
It seems to me that the same sort of
prejudice has rubbed off on the South
Asians that are living here in the Dallas Fort
Worth Metroplex. What I am talking about is
the reluctance on our part to truly unite as
people of similar culture and traditions. We
may belong to different religions, but are
those different religions not prevalent within
one country itself? Cultures, beliefs and
habits are formed from centuries of living in
a particular environment and not just from
religion alone. Religion may influence our
beliefs but our culture is what defines us
and we have to realize that centuries of co-
existing as part of one country has created
an inseparable bond among all of us that
hail from the Sub-Continent. To ignore that
fact and to try and create an imaginary block
in our thinking towards each other is in my
opinion not only ill-advised but extremely that we have with the people of our sister conniving minds of politicians. Also my

MEN’S fashion with Ali Fazal
Runway Round-up
T
he Spring/Summer 2009 collections, presented in New York Fashion Week
2008, introduced a lot of new trends for men. As witnessed by exclusive
runway images from the Marc by Marc Jacobs show, silhouettes for men
will be drastically different come spring. A lot of Caprizios, short pants that hit
about 2 inches below the knee, were present in muted colors like Grey and
Beige. Another new trend for men is Messenger Pants, which hit right above the
ankle-line.
Bright accessories are the watchword this season, especially in footwear.
Bright reds, yellows, and greens were especially present in shoes. Chunky arm
accessories (such as a wristwatch AND a cuff together on the wrist) also seem to
be coming back into fashion.
Metallic embellishment is still ever-present this season, a trend that carried
over from last year. Sequins and studs, in bronze, gold and silver were particularly
popular.

Ali Fazal focuses on entertainment

and the fashion industry at Salaam
Namaste. He is currently a junior at
The University of Texas at Dallas,
double-majoring in Journalism and
Public Relations.
