Busan ranks No.4 in Asia in hosting international conferences! BEXCO rising to the top!
BEXCO TOP 10 NEWS
Recently, the UIA (Union of International Association) announced the 2010 ranking for host cities of international conferences, and Busan achieved the amazing result of being the worlds No.17 and Asias No.4 by hosting a total of 93 international conferences. Although Busan isnt the Korean capital, it joined the ranks of the top five, which clearly showed that the brand image of Busan City has been further enhanced. Busans ranking in Asia has increased six levels compared to its ranking of tenth in 2009, and it climbed twenty levels in the world ranking. Lets take a look at the driving force behind this rapid increase.
BEXCO opened exactly ten years ago in September 2001 in Busan, where the phrase exhibition and convention was still unfamiliar. However, based on its detailed marketing drive that targeted the world and Busan Citys aggressive promotional policy, BEXCO has developed into an international exhibition and convention center, which now stands shoulder to shoulder with other world-famous centers, in a short period of time - an unprecedented achievement in Korea. The total number of events held at BEXCO has increased by more than four times from 167 in 2001 to 770 in 2010. The number of exhibitions certified by the UFI (Union des Foires), which is a world-class certification institution in the field of exhibitions, was nonexistent when the center first opened. However, starting with the Korea Railways & Logistics Fair 2007, a total of six exhibitions has been certified for four consecutive years until 2010, which means that the events being hosted in BEXCO have met global standards. Also, the total number of international conferences (Korea Tourism Organization) hosted, which shows the status of Busan as an international convention city at a glance, has increased by four times from 20 in 2004 to 89 in 2009. This shows continuous growth in terms of scale and contents. This is the result of seeking and developing conferences specialized for the region, attracting various prestigious events concerning international conferences and governments, and establishing a joint marketing system involving Busan City, BEXCO and the Busan Convention & Visitors Bureau. Also, the infrastructure will increase greatly once the expansion of BEXCOs facilities is completed. This will further strengthen Busans status as a global international conference city. The many international events held at BEXCO were the strong foundation that allowed Busan to emerge as an international exhibition and convention city today, and based on the successful hosting of those events, more large exhibitions and conventions are expected to be hosted. Moreover, the exhibition and convention marketing drive that utilized Busans greatly enhanced city brand provided a new growth engine for Busan, while also playing a leading role in the development of Koreas exhibition and convention industry. In addition, Busan is now focused on building a new auditorium and expanding its exhibition halls, starting 2010, and once this expansion is completed in June 2012, BEXCO will take a new leap forward as a global exhibition and convention center that represents Busan and Korea by becoming the most competitive center in Northeast Asia.

The Fourth High Level Forum on Aid Eectiveness (HLF-4) announces a new prospect in sharing!
The OECC 2012 (OptoElectronics and Communications Conference) is expected to attract about 500 world-famous scholars, professors and optoelectronics and communications industry-related individuals from 10 countries on July 2~6, 2012. Being hosted in the convention hall in BEXCO, the major contents will involve announcing the latest research trends and application examples of optoelectronics and communications and having in-depth discussions on relevant matters.
The Fourth High Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness (HLF-4) announces a new prospect in sharing!
The HLF-4 held in Busan on November 29~December 1, 2011, discussed the new blueprint and paradigm for development assistance. As the largest and highest level of international conference in development aid, the HLF-4, held in Busan, was the fourth of its kind to be held after Rome in 2003, Paris in 2005 and Accra (Ghana) in 2008. It is the first time that it is being held in a country that has changed from a recipient country of aid to a donor country that gives aid. The HLF-4 attracts world-wide attention and has about 3,300 participants, including the governmental representatives from about 160 countries, such as Korean President Myung Bak Lee, the UN Secretary-General Ki Moon Ban, the U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, heads of international organizations and representatives of civil society, as well as representatives of international organizations, parliaments, civil society and academia from about 70 countries. Especially, this conference has focused on the development of aid effectiveness, which can lead to actual development in a recipient country under the principle of aid effectiveness. Therefore, ways of seeking a comprehensive development cooperative partnership in which new development cooperative entities (new emerging nations, private enterprises, etc.) can participate were found. As a result, based on the three-day discussions, the governmental representatives from about 160 countries, international organization representatives from about 70 countries, and representatives of parliament, civil society and academia officially adopted the Busan Partnership for Effective Development Cooperation (Busan Declaration), which records the results of the conference, in the morning of the final conference. There is another reason why the Fourth HLF-4 2011 being held in BEXCO was very special. Several decades ago, BEXCO used to be the site of the airfield for receiving aid from various countries. Thus, the place where the Korean president stressed that Korea would strengthen its aid to other countries was the very location where Korea had previously received aid. Now that the Republic of Korea has made history by making breathtaking changes, BEXCO can be seen as the representation of the progress made, and it has emerged as the venue for new cooperation and sharing for the people all around the world. It is delightful to see a country that received aid change to a donor country, but it was more meaningful because the historical venue was BEXCO and, hopefully, the joy of this touching experience will continue in the future.
Among the events held at BEXCO, there was a very meaningful large convention in the form of the Fourth High Level Forum on Aid Eectiveness 2011. It is an international conference that plays a key role in global development assistance. Lets take a look at the major contents and the meaning of this event.

We are living in the era of the audition. All kinds of people, including a sixty year old grandmother to a five year old grandson, are showing o their talents on television, and many viewers are touched by the unscripted drama. Recently, there have been many audition programs shown on the terrestrial and cable channels, where participants from all over the nation competing in a survival format has seen a solid boost to the ratings. As a result, the broadcasting stations are competing with one another to come up with unique formats for the audition program. In cases where nationwide preliminary rounds are held, BEXCO, in Busan, has become the mecca for the audition survival programs.
Already tvN s Korea Got Talent s and SBS Miracle Audition have held large auditions for thousands of people at the BEXCO exhibition hall during the spring. The participants who passed this round were the ones who captured the eyes of the television viewers. Superstar K3, which will air in August, also held its second preliminary round for about 30,000 participants out of about 280,000 applicants. In addition, MBC s The Great Birth Season 2, which had a great response from the public for its first season, held its preliminary auditions for thousands of people from the southwest of the nation at BEXCO on July 24, 2011. BEXCO definitely seems the perfect place to hold auditions. Likewise, the main reason why the broadcasting stations have been holding auditions at BEXCO is because of the following: very convenient space utilization, such as installing booths to allow auditions for many people; convenient when notifying the participants of where to assemble; great accessibility by public transportation; and easy to transport and set up filming equipment. When making a program, there is the consensus that the unique design of the building is interesting to the viewers. In addition, the image of the hosting venue being a large convention center is also included in the intentions of the people involved in making the program because it enhances the image of the program. From the participant point of view, it is much safer to s audition at a facility with well equipped convenience facilities and great accessibility, while families and friends who come to BEXCO to cheer on their loved ones can spend a more convenient time at the leisure facilities when waiting for the participants. This has acted as a plus factor because more participation can be encouraged. As BEXCO is known to hold various auditions, it has turned into a place wheredreams come truefor any and everyone, making BEXCO even friendlier to the citizens.

Soo-Ik Kim, CEO & President of BEXCO, wins the grand prize for professional management from the Korean Industrial Economic Association
This year BEXCO won many awards. Lets take a look at the honored moments from the global management award to the grand prize for professional management.
1. BEXCO wins the global management award (public enterprise section)
In November, BEXCO (CEO & President Soo-Ik Kim) won the grand prize in the public enterprise section at the global management award ceremony sponsored by the JMAC (Japanese Management Association Consultants). BEXCO established a medium and long-term development strategy (VISION 2007 and VISION 2015) and had systematically and efficiently implemented it to achieve outstanding managerial results, as well as contributing to making Busan Asias No.4 and the worlds No.17 most popular host city for international conferences as of 2010. Also, it played a huge role in attracting domestic business visitors related to the MICE industry, while it generated a regional economic impact of 908.3 billion won to the Busan region. Therefore, in recognition of how BEXCO has carried out its global management initiatives and has contributed to regional economic development so as to set an example for other public enterprises, it won the grand prize in public enterprise section. Especially, since 2009, it has successfully entered the overseas market for exhibitions (ENTECH Hanoi: Environment and Energy Exhibition), which was another important factor in its winning the award. The CEO & President of BEXCO, Soo-Ik Kim, focused on global management from various aspects, including making all out efforts to globally promote BEXCOs MICE industry and Busans city brand while working as the director of the UFI since 2008. Besides this, it has actively implemented various businesses in connection with the regional characteristics of Busan, including the yacht convention business, the academy business for overseas development of local small and medium enterprises, and the development of special exhibitions that meet the industrial and environmental characteristics of Busan. This has allowed BEXCO to greatly contribute to the internationalization of Busan and become a new driving force for the regions future.
In February 2011, BEXCO held a ceremony for scholarships worth 7 million won This event saw the participation of about fifty people, including BEXCO CEO & president; executives s and employees; the Chairman of the Administration and Culture Committee of Busan Council, Dong-Yoon Lee; people from the Woo2-dong Community Center (Chief of the dong-office, Pil-Rae Ha); and the recipients of scholarship and was held in room No. 202 of the convention hall in BEXCO. This ceremony was for university, middle school, and high school students living in the Woo2-dong area and has been carried out since 2005. A total of 18 people have received the scholarship. Also, some of the money was donated to senior citizens living alone, rehabilitation for the disabled and continuous support was promised to Wolpyeong Village in Gijang-gun, which signed a one company-one village agreement with BEXCO, by holding a party for the village elders. Meanwhile, in January, the employees at BEXCO also gave donations to a mutual aid society in the neighboring area, and during the Yeonpyeong Island incident last year, the employees sent their donations to Ju-Ho Choi, who is from Busan. BEXCO plans to continue to look after and show compassion to its neighbors in need.
2. BEXCOs CEO & President, Soo-Ik Kim, wins the grand prize for professional management from the Korea Industrial Economic Association
Aside from this, on December 10, 2011, BEXCOs CEO and President, Soo-Ik Kim, won the grand prize for professional management from the Korea Industrial Economic Association (President: Sung-Ho Son, professor at Donga University). This award is given to a person elected by the Korea Industrial Economic Associations Award Review Committee as being someone who has contributed to improving future national competitiveness and has implemented outstanding corporate social responsibility activities, with great leadership in various fields. Mr. Kim was selected because of the following reasons. First, he developed BEXCO into a highly recognized company that successfully hosted many overseas exhibitions and conferences with UFI certification for the third consecutive year. Second, he played a huge role in improving the development of the local community and enhancing its prestige through the ripple effect of MICE hosted by BEXCO and thus contributed to making Busan a major city for international conferences. Lastly, he implemented environmental management to preserve the environment of the global village by reducing carbon dioxide emissions and improving fuel efficiency.

HOT EXHIBITIONS
AT the UFI Congress held on the same day, there were interesting sessions by scholars and experts from
around the world, including about the status of the global economy and the future direction of the exhibition industry (Switzerland), the introduction of the UFI marketing winners (Netherlands, vnu Exhibitions), the new economic opportunities in Central and South America (Peru), and the introduction of the winners of exhibition operations (U.S. Freemans), which widened the understanding about the exhibition industry. Moreover, I was greatly impressed by how the meeting culture has also developed with the active use of iPads. From Korea, BEXCO, the Association of Korea Exhibition Industry, EXCO, COEX and other major institutions participated. There was a separate promotional booth for Korean institutions where major exhibition promotional materials for 2012 and introductory materials for each center were given to the participants. Many new systems and technologies were introduced at the Congress. First, there was the POKEN electronic name card based on social networking, meetings utilizing smartphones, a system providing the operational status of an exhibition, a system for operating exhibitions developed by Freeman (booths, transport, utility, etc.), which were all very interesting. In the future, BEXCO should focus on maximizing the convenience of the participants at exhibitions and international conferences through the application of these systems. END.

INTERVIEW
Bi-Ya Han
during the 4th High Level Forum on Aid Eectiveness held at BEXO, in Busan, which presented a new paradigm for aid development and saw the participation of about 3,300 governmental representatives, NGO and civic groups, we met with Bi-Ya Han who is famous in various areas.
Welcome to BEXCO. What brought you to participate in this forum?
Yes, its nice to meet you. I am currently working in an aid development organization called KoFID (Korea Civil Society Forum on International Development Cooperation), and I am here regarding what I do there. (Editors note: KoFID-Korea Civil Society Forum on International Development Cooperation: in order to improve the effectiveness of international development cooperation and overseas aid, it was established in 2010 through the civic group network in Korea. The IT monitors the Korean Governments ODA (Official Development Assistance) policy and proposes aid and development policies based on universal values by strengthening the capacity of Koreas civil society.) the least-developed countries to avoid simple crises, we should think about how we can provide appropriate support for what is most needed by them.
Is this your first time here at BEXCO? do you think it has the
What meaning do you think the 4th High Level Forum on Aid Eectiveness conveys?
First, it is offers a change in how aid is viewed. Before, the important issue was looking at aid from the position of the person providing the aid. Did the money we gave get delivered properly and handled transparently? But now, from the position of the person receiving the aid, we ask if the foundation has been provided to make new developments. I think there has been a huge shift in the paradigm so that we question whether there has been continuous change made through the aid and whether the quality of life has actually improved. The perspective has changed from the person giving the aid to the person receiving the aid. Second, development aid, in the past, was conducted between the donor and recipient countries. This meant that the channel was unified, but now NGO, civic groups and major companies from various countries participate. In other words, compared to before, there are more entities and as there is more diversity, there are lots of discussions involving diverse voices and opinions. Moreover, not just between advanced countries and underdeveloped countries, but more diverse countries are now participating, including the BRIC countries, which has completely changed the depth and length of the discussions. Personally, I think the name Busan, where the forum was held, will be remembered forever as long as the issue of development aid continues. This forum will be remembered for a long time.
Recently, young people have had lots to worry about. Regarding this forum is there any message you want
Recently, due to the European economic crisis and the downgrading of the U.S. credit
rating, there has been a global economic crisis. At a time like this, what are your thoughts on development aid?
First, I dont think the development aid we are giving is just charity for a poor country. It is an investment made for the future. If we can resolve the fundamental problems that are suffered by the least-developed countries, then we can save the resources that otherwise would have to be plowed into them. If the poor countries have their own ability to survive and the required infrastructure, it will be possible to redistribute the resources efficiently and fundamentally it will bring about a developed future more quickly. As mentioned by the UN Secretary-General, Ki-Moon Ban and the OECD Secretary-General, Angel Gurria, just because there is global crisis we shouldnt stop here. Instead of just allowing
Interview epilogue: After finishing the short interview with Ms. Han, I was absorbed by the challenging and positive aura coming out of her. When talking about young Koreans with regards to how Korea has changed from a recipient to a donor country, she smiled and said that this is such a wonderful and happy thing. When I saw her shining smile I saw how it mirrored the slogan of the forum Building a New Global Partnership for Eective Aid. I thanked her for the interview and gave her a small orgel that played the music Arirang. I will never forget how pleased she was and what she said. It will be a great present for a foreigner. I sincerely hope great achievements and happiness meet her passion and endeavors in the future. End. Interviewer : Jae-Hoon, Seol(BEXCO P.R. Team)
