THE INTAKE PROCESS

We gather several types of information in order to ensure that we can offer families everything they need and deserve. 1. Call the intake staff at (212) 523-3082 to set up an intake. There are generally two intake appointments that comprise the comprehensive evaluation. The first appointment is generally in the afternoon in which parents and children fill out clinical questionnaires, as well as complete standard paperwork. The subsequent appointment is with the clinician, in consultation with an attending psychiatrist, and is scheduled for the following days and times: Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:30 am and 12:30 pm Wednesdays at 12:30 pm Fridays at 9:30 am 2. The assigned primary therapist will set up an appointment with children, adolescents and families following the intake appointment. 3. The primary therapist works with family members to develop a treatment plan that meets the patients needs. The patient may work with additional members of the treatment team e.g., a psychiatrist or a group therapist, to address issues.

Sometimes children who are experiencing emotional health difficulties have learned to hide their problems. Children with undiagnosed and untreated emotional health problems are more likely to perform poorly in school, drop out of school, get in trouble with the law, have difficulty finding a job, and use drugs. There is now substantial research showing that the earlier emotional health problems are detected and treated, the better children will do in the long run.

Children must be under the age of 18 to schedule an evaluation. Exceptions are sometimes made if an 18-year-old is currently attending high school. Sometimes children are diagnosed with developmental disabilities as their primary reason for referral. In these cases, referrals are made to clinics that specialize in these developmental disabilities. We offer substance use prevention and treatment services, however, we can only offer these when there is a primary mental health issue. Some cases may be referred to more specialized services.
