In this lesson plan I tried to incorporate some technology by using a PowerPoint presentation, but I definitely could have incorporated

some other sort of progra m that would allow the students to use their critical and creative thinking skil ls. I need to incorporate the Glogster program because it will allow students to use the computers and Internet to create a product of their own, instead of usi ng the creations of other people. It is also something that they will be excited to share with their classmates, and hopefully their parents as well. Technology incorporated: Glogster Title: Introduction of Freedom Class/Subject: Current World Issues Date: 12/6/10 Student Objectives/ Student Outcomes: 1. Through class discussion, students will begin to develop their own definition of freedom and ideas about how they experience it in their daily lives. 2. Students will individually identify symbols that represent their experiences with freedom, which will allow them to compare their interpretations with their peers in class discussion. Students will work individually to incorporate a variety of technologies in crea ting an artifact to represent what freedom means to them, they will also compare their interpretations with their peers and share their ideas in class discussio n. Content Standards: 18.B.4 Analyze various forms of institutions (e.g., educational, military, chari table, governmental). Materials/Resources/Technology: 1. Power Point Presentation 2. Computer & Projector 3. White Board 4. Magazines/News Papers/Print Advertisements 5. Scissors/Glue 6. Construction Paper Teachers Goals: 1. Expose students to the different ways freedom is represented 2. Allow students to formulate their own ideas about freedom and more specifical ly, the freedoms they personally have

Time: 12 minutes Start of Lesson: On the white board, the teacher will write the question, What is freedom? The tea cher will then encourage students to begin thinking about their own definition o f freedom and more specifically, how they have experienced freedom in their own lives. The teacher will then ask for a few volunteers to orally answer the ques tion and assign one student the role of writing answers on the whiteboard for al

l to see. 3 minutes Introduction of Lesson: The teacher will introduce the main concept of the unit, which is freedom, and e xplain the overarching topics and goals for the unit that will be achieved over the next couple weeks. To introduce todays lesson, the teacher will verbally exp lain the objectives and lay out a plan for the rest of the unit. 30 minutes

Lesson Instruction: -The teacher will then refer to the students definitions of freedom, which are wr itten on the whiteboard, and instruct the students to recognize how diverse the answers are. -The teacher will then begin a PowerPoint presentation and show the class the di ctionary definition of freedom (slide 1), and allow time for the students to com pare and contrast this definition with those given by the students. -The teacher will then highlight how this demonstrates the difficulty of definin g the term freedom, and ask the students to keep this consideration in mind throug hout the duration of the unit. -The teacher will then introduce the three main types of freedoms that will be d iscussed throughout this unit (Slide 2): 1. Personal 2. Political 3. Social -The teacher will then go into a little more detail about each type of freedom, asking students for examples and presenting powerful images to represent each. ( Slides 3-6) Instruction Continued: -The teacher will then introduce the short project, which the students will work on for the remainder of the class period, as well as during class tomorrow. -The students will be given ample materials such as magazines, newspapers and ot her print items to collect symbols that represent what freedom means to them. -T he teacher will give an example of cutting out a picture of blue jeans and expla ining how they represent the freedom to wear what one feels like wearing. Instead of bringing in magazines and having the students create a collage using these images I would bring the class to the compute lab and introduce the glogst er program to them. I would encourage them to use different images found on the internet as well as video or sound clips that they find, and encourage them to u se their own voice to record their definition of freedom. This way, the students would not be restricted to the images found only in the magazines and could be more creative. This would also encourage them to think more on their own because theyd be forced to use a search engine to search for images in particular to rep resent what means freedom to them. 2 Minutes Assessments/ Checks for Understanding: The class will be assigned their first journal entry, which will be to reflect o

n the discussion of freedom in class and illustrate at least 2 personal experien ces they have had that dealt with freedom. 3 minutes Closure/Wrap-up/Review: Freedom encompasses so many aspects of life and because of this, each person exp eriences and interprets it in a different way. However, it is important to categ orize freedoms into personal, political and social characteristics in order to b etter assess how they are granted or limited. In future lessons, we will further our understandings of how these types of freedoms show themselves in current wo rld issues. Self Assessment N/A
