Course Description: EMCH327 Design of Mechanical Elements Credit: 3 Prereq: EMCH 260 Design against static failure and fatigue failure of structural members and machine parts; design and selection of components. Course Objectives: 1. Students will demonstrate the ability to formulate stress analysis problems in multidimensions and to estimate principal stresses 2. Students will demonstrate the ability to apply multi-dimensional static failure criteria in the analysis and design of mechanical components 3. Students will demonstrate the ability to apply stress-life fatigue failure criteria in the analysis and design of mechanical components Topics Covered: 1. Stresses in Mechanical Elements 2. Stress-based Static Design Criteria 3. Stress-Life Fatigue Design Criteria 4. Machinery Elements (design criteria application) Assessment Methods: 1. Written Tests Class/Laboratory Schedule: Lecture: Three 50-minute sessions per week (Mon, Wed, Fri, 10:10AM-11:00AM) Recitation: 0 hours per week Laboratory: 0 hours per week Contribution of Course to Meeting the Professional Component: Engineering Topics: 100% Math and Science: 0% General Education: 0% Class attendance policy: Class attendance is mandatory. If you miss more than 3 classes during the semester, every additional absence will lower your class grade by 2 percentage points.

Homework rules: Homework will be assigned based on lectures 1. All homework must be neat and appear only on one side of the paper 2. Name, date, assignment number must be given on a cover sheet. Initials must appear in the top right-hand corner of each page. All pages for any given problem set must be stapled together at the upper left-hand corner. Folding pages are NOT acceptable. 3. Start each problem solution on a new page. Begin each problem by stating the problem number, tabulating the given data, if appropriate, and drawing any diagrams. 4. State clearly any assumptions made in the solution of a problem. Perform calculations in a stepwise and orderly manner. 5. Label carefully and in detail any graphs which occur as part of a solution. 6. Answers with proper units must be circumscribed in a block for emphasis. 7. Assignments must be handled in on the date designated by the instructor. Late due homework is not accepted and will be assigned 0 point. 8. Discussing homework is allowed and encouraged, but blind copying is NOT acceptable. Handing your homework to someone so they can get the answer is unacceptable. Copying of solutions from previous semesters or solution manual is not acceptable. The general rule is that the work that you hand in must be yours. Cheating in any form will be prosecuted to the full extent allowed. Project: Towards the middle of the semester, a design project will be assigned and will be due a week before the last day of classes.

Exams: 1. Two mid-term exams (the assigned exam day is subject to change) a. Mid term exam 1: 10:10AM-11:00AM, Fri, Feb. 10, 2012, Room B112 b.
