TELECOLLABORATIVE ENOTEBOOK (Original) My Name Around the World Project

Students will research the meaning and origin as well as other details such as what famous person has their name, you gave them their name, and what other family members also have their name. The students will then present these findings on our blog My Name Around the World Project @ http://mynamearoundtheworld.blogspot.com This Global Learning Project incorporates the telecollaborative structures of: 1. Electronic Publishing: the students will post on our blog 2. Information Searches: the students will do Internet research to find the meaning of their names, origins, and descriptions. 3. Peer Feedback: Students will comment on other project participants name descriptions through other classes Blogger websites. I will implement this project from June 16th through August 16th, 2011 with the four Clark children who are homeschooled and range in age from junior high to high school. Below is a description of my lesson plan: -Goals: Students will be able to research, define, and publish the meaning of their names. -Standards: Language Arts: Produce clear and coherent writing in which, the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. Technology: Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing and present the relationships between information and ideas clearly and efficiently. Couldnt find the last standard about culture awareness (will continue to look for it). -Materials: Internet access/computers, art supplies (markers/paper/and such), copies of the handouts, blog, release forms for their pictures/work to be put on our blog.

-Anticipatory set: I will introduce this lesson by showing a You Tube video describing some Biblical names and meanings (even though the girl is sadly not a Christian, the video still serves the purpose of explaining the meanings.) Video: http://youtu.be/jcPFLh1_MDI -Direct Instruction: Names are important. They give us an identity. God named people in the Bible after their personalities or their lot in life. Many of our names have family stories or heritage behind them. In American culture, our names are preferred names from our parents unlike in other cultures such as China (surname plus first name)- see website: http://genealogy.about.com/gi/o.htm?zi=1/XJ&zTi=1&sdn=genealogy&cdn=parenting&t m=17&f=00&tt=14&bt=1&bts=0&zu=http%3A//weber.ucsd.edu/~dkjordan/chin/hbnam es-u.html We will explore as a class some of the other classroom blogs that have also participated in this project through this website: http://www.mynameprojectworks.blogspot.com -Guided Practice: Together we will work through handouts pages 1&3 provided by the project (see next few pages). The last portion of the handout is to write a mini-essay about your name and all that defines and describes your name. We will be posting these essays as well as a picture of each student and an artistic design/drawing of their name on our blog. As a short example, I will define my name: Shanna (Shawna): Hebrew Masculine form of: Sean or Shawn Meaning: God is gracious Biblical significance: God is gracious to His people, providing salvation and blessings.

Individual significance: God was gracious to me in allowing me to understand the Gospel and become a believer. I understand Gods grace in choosing me as His child. Now I live my life for Christ and not for Shanna. Famous people: Shanna Moakler- American model & access born in 1975. -Independent Practice: Students will use the Internet to research their names and they will take notes. Students will complete handout pages 2 & 4 (essay). Students will create a design/picture using their names. Students will post their mini-essay, personal pictures, name picture or design on our blog. Students will also post their comments about the other participants name findings on their blogs. -Close: Our names are an important part of who we are culturally and individually.

Synopsis The Clark students really had a blast with researching their names! Two of them are adopted and from the Czech Republic so I could tell it made them ponder why their parents gave them their names and their heritage. They were very curious and one was concerned as to the meanings they found about their names. The name Kelly means war, strife, bright-headed and their daughter Kelly was not happy to hear this since shes such a sweet, pleasant girl! We had to reassure her that she is not like the meaning of her name! I did not use the handouts I originally mentioned because once I took a look at them, the Clark children were more advanced then the level of these handouts, so we talked verbally about the meanings of names and I let them explore. I also slightly

changed the independent practice to incorporate more technology by using Glogster.com. I had each student make a glog based on the meaning of their name, its origin, a famous person with their name, a picture, and an additional image or clip art. They absolutely loved, loved, loved using Glogster and creating a digital poster of their names! Two students actually re-did their glogs several times before finally turning it in a few days later! This was the first time I had used Glogster.com with students and I didnt realize it would be such a hit! This is a website I will definitely use in the classroom in the future after this experience! All the students work is included on our blog: http://mynamearoundtheworld.blogspot.com. Our blog will be listed on the Name Around the World Project website soon: www.mynameprojectworks.blogspot.com

Show and Tell Global Learning Project http://showandtellus.weebly.com LeeAnn Rigby

TELECOLLABORATIVE ENOTEBOOK This is not the original project that I intended to implement. Originally, I had intended to participate in the iEarn Holiday Card Exchange, but I ran into a few challenges: not enough access to students to make 30 or more cards to mail to

participating classes, the supplies needed, and the time required to borrow homeschool students who are already busy working on school assignments to make many Christmas cards. I love this idea, but I think it would have worked best in an actually classroom environment, so maybe when Im teaching Ill my class will be able to participate! The Show and Tell Global Learning Project is a project that allows students from around the world to share all types of items of importance or special meaning with one another. This Global Learning Project incorporates the telecollaborative structures of: 1. Global Classrooms: many classrooms around the world will be working on a common goal of sharing items over video with other participants collaborating via Ms. Rigbys website and forum: http://showandtellus.weebly.com 2. Demonstrates public speaking skills as well as emphasizes appreciating cultural differences displayed in items of significance.

I will implement this project during November 2011 with The Clark children, junior high through high school aged homeschool students from Faith Bible Church. Below is a description of my lesson plan: -Goals: The students will give a oral description of an item that is significant to them while being video taped.

TELECOLLABORATIVE ENOTEBOOK -Standards: Plan and deliver a clear and coherent oral speech that is appropriate to the task, purpose, and audience. -Materials: An item of significance, a video camera, Internet access/computer.

-Anticipatory Set: Have you ever had something that you were so excited about you just couldnt wait to share it with a friend?! Like your new bike or a new game? Well, thats exactly what Show and Tell is about! -Direct Instruction: Show and Tell is an activity that is about showing an item that is special to you and describing why is has special significance. Your speech should consist of introducing yourself, your item, and giving a detailed description of why this item is of importance to you. For example My name is Shanna and this is my favorite picture frame. Its special to me because my sister gave it to me and it holds a picture from our vacation this summer of my sister and I. This is the first vacation that my mom, sister, grandma, and I went on and it holds many special memories for our family. -Guided Practice: Now think of an item that holds special significance to you. It could be a pet, a book, a favorite thing to do, etc. As a class, brainstorm ideas together using a graphic organizer. -Independent Practice: Once everyone has picked out an item, have the student practice out loud by themselves their speeches. Then practice with a buddy. Finally, each student will practice out loud with me as I video a trail run of their speeches. They can decide to keep or re-do their videos as many times as needed. -Close: Its important when speaking about any topic to have a clear, coherent speech that communicates your important points to an audience. Having an object visible grabs

TELECOLLABORATIVE ENOTEBOOK the interest of the audience and when its a personal item youre excited about, it really captures peoples attention and makes listening fun!

Synopsis When introducing the Show and Tell project, I had no idea that none of the Clark students had ever done this before! I just assumed that all American students had participated in at least one Show and Tell as a child, but I had forgotten that the Clarks children grew up on the mission field in the Czech Republic and have been homeschooled all of their lives. Two of their children were also adopted from the Czech Republic and as I was describing the project to them, I realized that Show and Tell is a very American tradition. Never the less, the students were excited to participate. They did have some trouble brainstorming items that were of significance to them, but with a little help, they all found something to share. At first, they were pretty nervous rehearsing their speeches, one student had to go up to her room to be alone to rehearse. Only a few blips when videotaping their Show and Tell items, we had a good laugh. Overall, they did really well sharing objects that are special in their lives and they actually got excited about sharing. Their Show and Tell videos are located under Class Forums/ Shanna O on the following website: http://showandtellus.weebly.com/index.html
